My family came to visit me from out of town and we decided to try this place out. It is now one of my favorite places. First, our server Katie was the best waitress I've had in such a long time. Amazing tortillas and flavor, huge portion sizes. Good place for veggie fajitas which can be tricky when you take out the meat.

I have to say, this place is a weekly pleasure both me and my husband allow ourselves. Even on a tight budget- this place has great appeal!! The chicken fajitas are amazing and even thought tortilla soups, flautas and the BBQ beef brisket are great- you can't go wrong. And on top of that- the dos xritas are awesome. I never get too excited about this place. It's overpriced, and the food doesn't ever really wow me. The service is kind of all over the place, one time I will have a decent server, the next time could be a totally different story. We came for drinks after a long day. (Also, we missed National Margarita Day and had to make up for it of course.) The five of us found a spot to sit in the bar area and the wait began. I got "antsy" and asked my friends who got there first if there was a waiter or we had to order from the bar. After being told there was a waiter, I waited for him. (Didn't catch his name unfortunately) After about 15 or so minutes a waitress brings water and menus (still no waiter for drink orders though) *tick tock tick tock* 25 minutes after getting there the waiter comes to get our order. (I've been a waiter so I understand being busy but the bar had quite a few seats still open. Not quite sure what the hold up was all about) We order some cocktails/beers (Serrano cucumber margarita, coco loco, Mexican martini) and watch them sit on the bar top for another 3-5 minutes. (If you haven't caught the theme of "waiting", it only gets worse) The drinks wee decent, but the Serrano one should have been spicier, it tasted like a cucumber margarita. After finishing our initial drinks, we order another round. Again waiting a decent amount of time in between everything and watching our drinks sit at the bar. There was a slight mix up with payment but that was taken care of by the manager. No harm no foul. Overall, decent cocktails. (Nothing out of this world). Nice but SLOWWWW waitstaff. And delicious chips/salsa. I wouldn't be opposed to going back, but it won't be my first choice. read more

Im giving this restaurant 3 stars because the food, drinks and service are always good(ELAMN our server) but tonight was a little different when it came to the atomoshpere. Came to have a couple happy hour drinks with my mom this Saturday evening. We had just received our drinks, and witnessed the manager on duty at the time, named Nicole, start a confrontation with an employee in front of my mom and I and other customers while she was "sweeping." I work in the service industry and it is UNACCEPTABLE as a manager to yell or bring up an isssue with an employee in front of customers. The way she spoke to her employee belittled him and was rude. If you have a problem with an employee please take it to the back or out of sight of the customers. read more

Food was comparable with other Serranos but the service was super slow. Don't go in with a big group and expect any sort of adequate treatment. We went in and had such a hard time getting a table it was ridiculous. They wanted to split us up instead of moving some tables. Very very disappointing. OK, so first I'll say, I loved the atmosphere of the place. I liked how it was decorated and they have a large patio that we really enjoyed. I thought it was genius how they handed out magna-doodles to the kids instead of the usual paper and cheap crayons. The service was good...I wouldn't say exceptional, but good. We ordered the queso perfecto (with guac and beef) and while it was REALLY good, I felt like the price ($8) for the tiny crock we got was a bit much. The house made, complimentary salsa was very good also. I ordered the enchilada combo that gave me 3 different flavors (chicken with verde sauce, cheese, and beef). The chicken was good but my least favorite of the three. The beef and cheese ones were absolutely delicious. Came with beans and rice that was exactly what you expect it to be so no complaints about my meal at all. My husband ordered the burger that came with queso, serrano peppers, and onions on it. The toppings were good, but the bottom bun was soggy and the burger tasted like rubber...so we sent it back. He ordered the chipotle brisket in it's place. When this came out, it was at least 75% fat. Which was a real shame, because the sauce was good and what little meat there was, looked tender. We sent this back too because...well you pay for food you can eat, and you don't want to eat fat. The waiter was really understanding and apologetic about the whole thing and the manager we spoke with took both failed entrees off the bill and offered a replacement or a dessert. We declined but we'll be back...we were assured both dishes are normally very good and highly recommended. I'd like to think every cook has a bad night, so we'll definitely come back and I'll update my review accordingly. read more

There are many TexMex places in Austin TX, but i dare say iwould be hard to top Seranos. The guacamole appetizer (at lower price during Happy Hour) was fresh, lightly salted with a hint of garlic, grape tomatoes and parsley, was delightful. The Shrimp Enchiladas were made with poblanos, carrots, onions and a light suiza sauce that was excellent. I look forward to trying other things on the menu! Visited this location upon first opening. Let me just start with saying the service was outstanding. Lots of smiling faces eager to help. The food and Margaritas were not as good as the service. Beans and rice are totally bland, salsa is ok but tastes like anise, beef and jalapeno sausage fajitas are great, chicken fajitas ok, and carnitas fajitas awful. They had not yet gotten their liquor license and served free margaritas. I would not have paid for these drinks. Totally weak and wimpy. Could be just because they were free. Been pleasantly happy at every experience. And there's been plenty of them. I've probably stopped here a dozen times since they opened, and I'd say 80% of the time I'm 100% happy, 15% mostly happy, and 5% not too happy at all. Good enough for 4 stars though. The times I've eaten AT the restaraunt are probably in the lower 20% more so, since I weigh in the customer service a little heavier, but in general the foods been pretty tasty, the chips plentiful, the hot sauce hot, and the flavors good overall. The alcoholic beverages have been lacking though, lacking alcohol mostly, but flavorful. Just nothing like Trudy's or Baby A's. A good portion of my visits are stop-ins to get something to take home to the family since we have a little one. And in those cases, I've been rather happy with everything. The bar staff has been quick to take my order, and I've typically gotten my food in less than 10 minutes. They even bring by a bowl of chips and salsa while you wait. I've run the gamut on food here, chicken, tacos, enchiladas, shrimp, burritos.. and they all taste pretty good.. the pico they throw in can be pretty spicy since it's made with serrano peppers, but it's good food. Dear heavens. So after my last fantastic experience with their chicken fajitas, I'd been craving more. This time was NOT good. My chicken this time was not marinated in delciousness. What sold me on Serranos, was the first the service we received and secondly the generous portions of food! I had not been to Serranos in five years and then my networking group decided to use the meeting space in the bar for our weekly luncheon. The staff is so accommodating and very understanding that sometimes 20 people show up and other times only FIVE people show up. Nonetheless, they don't charge extra and don't complain about setting up a large table. The server we had was extremely polite and didn't act negative about all the separate checks and gave us plenty of attention. What surprised me the most about Serranos, was that I actually left feeling FULL and SATISFIED! I am so tired of eating at she-she places downtown that end up costing $20 plus tip for lunch and I am hungry again 2 hours later. I ordered a lunch special and enjoyed a fresh salad and a GENEROUS size of tortilla soup. Great Tex-Mex food all around. When I was in college I used to work at a Serranos. I got to know the cooks and got to see much of the food preparation that starts early in the AM. With the notable exception of foods like their desert Flan, everything is made in-house. Fajitas cut from huge pieces of meat and tenderized. The tortillas, while no longer made by an old lady, are still made in-house by a slick machine. The rice, beans, and chile rellenos. All made from scratch every day. It isn't a surprise really that as an adult I return to enjoy some of my favorite dishes: chipotle chicken with grilled onions and avocado, or huevos rancheros with their delicious and complex ranchero sauce, or the pollo con queso, or enchiladas con huevos. If you have a sweet tooth, don't forget to try their sweet tea. If it's too much, they'll cut it for you. Their chips are airy and light, while their salsa is tangy with just a little kick. Enough to whet your appetite, for sure. They can get busy during brunch hours and dinner, but if you get there early enough it is a pleasant experience with great made to order food. read more

I stopped in here on Father's Day for a quick snack before going to meet my father. The service was good, the food... ugh. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and was not impressed. The meat in it had a ton of gristle and I honestly think more bites ended up in my napkin than in my belly. While Serranos is not our first choice for Tex-Mex we are never disappointed. We love that as soon as we walk in the door we are greeted with the aroma of smoked beef. Decided to see what all the craze was about with their Happy Hour. Very nice hostess, pushy server. I'm all for up selling to get a bigger ticker but he seemed annoyed that we were there for half priced apps and drinks. $3 well liquor (and yes, it's the good stuff) and house margaritas. My disappointment was with the incredibly limited selection of half priced appetizers. We got the variety plate to try several things at once which ended up being $6 and the Bean and Cheese Nachos which didn't represent the description in the menu whatsoever. All we got for the special price of $1.50 was four large chips topped with refried beans and cheese with a few jalapeño slices. Drinks were decent for the price but I'm glad we visited for Happy Hour since I wouldn't be very happy if I had to pay full price for those apps. read more
