This used to be our go to spot but during the last visit, the server disappeared after dropping off drinks with no straws, no chips and all but one entree. I'm a huge fan of local & non chain restaurants, so when we were looking for a place for dinner my kiddo popped Yelp open and found Taqueria Chapala just off the highway we were headed down. We took a chance and... boy did it pay off. The decor of the place is kind of a fun, old rustic farmhouse feel with a fun sense of humor. We split the mini tacos and birria tacos (because apparently it's the big thing for 2023-2024 and everyone has it.). On the mini tacos - The beef fajitas were delicious. The Al Pastor was good and flavorful. There was a mountain of grilled onions and 2 jalapeños. Perfect for 2 to split. The birria was tasty as well. For those not in the know, birria is like a shredded pot-roast marinated in adobo and put in a pan-fried corn tortilla with delicious Oaxacan cheese. Served with a dipping "soup" on the side. The experience I just had was awful. I ordered a plate of food with a side of sour cream . First, the sour cream looked very very lumpy. I decided to look past that and as I was stirring the sour cream. Trying to convince myself to look past I come across an object in the sour cream. This Chapala used to be located on South Congress and was a regular dinner spot for my family. They are right off the highway now, a little bit bigger dining room. If you have cash bring it as they add a percentage for card payments. They have a great ceviche. We also love their Barbacoa, and fajitas. They have great prices and any combination of tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas you can imagine. Service is quick and attentive. This is a good place for large groups and kiddos. read more

Prices are not updated on their website and there is no option to order online. So if you order pickup expect to pay more than 20% more than you were expecting. 50%+ for kids meals. Hidden away and get also right there on the side of the road. Stopped by this morning for a breakfast taco (beans and cheese), a non-breakfast taco (lengua), and a small menudo (with hominy). The drive through was easy and surprisingly fast. They package everything really nicely for take out; no spilling of my menudo. Everything was very flavorful. My review is only for breakfast tacos, because that's all I've ever ordered, but I tell you, this is THE place. My personal favorite is the potato and egg. The potatoes are big and chunky, the eggs are fluffy. I also recommend the bean and cheese. They've done large orders for me (3 dozen) to take to workplace breakfast, and everyone raved. Before 11am, you can get 2 ingredient tacos for $1.89 each. After 11am, it's $2.29. Call ahead and the drive through goes much faster. read more

This is one of the best Mexican places in the area. You would never know; you can hardly see it driving by. The sign is faded, and it's a super run down building. But they have great food! I ordered a fajita meal for delivery. It was HUGE. It came with ALL the works. I just kept pulling more, and more, and more out of the bag. Fresh ingredients. The meal was full of flavor. Possibly the best tacos I've had in Austin. The Al Pastor taco was so good! The flour tortilla was homemade and perfect. The taco was simple with just cilantro, onions and lime but it was booming with flavor and just incredible. They stepped up when others weren't even trying. It was the Friday of Snowmeggedon, you know the week. If you don't know, it snowed in TX, A LOT. Id had a week of hell, no water, no electricity, freezing temps, no food available, and alls I wanted was a breakfast taco. The usuals had nada, no Torchys,no Cabana,no Deli, none. I started driving, legit just driving till I found something. Yelp showed me the way. A mexican restaurant right on a service road WITH! a drive thru. Yes, a restaurant with a drive-thru. I went back the next day too. I ordered 6 double bacon, coquito cheese, egg, potato, on flour tortilla. They came hot, wrapped in foil, with both red & green sauce for each one, and for the kicker got a side of fresh made queso. The green sauce is like sweet peppers mixed with wasabe and the red sauce like a tangy chunky salsa with red flakes. They are typical size, 6"x3" but stuffed. Proportion wise they go big or at least they did for me, left a 100% tip I was so happy. They are quick too. The window clerk was pleasant and helped explain what they had. The tortilla were really fresh, warm, soft, and stretchy. You could eat just the tortilla and be happy. I definitely recommend and I will be coming back. Stumbled upon this EVER so YUMMY Mexican restaurant through Yelp! Looking for non-chain lunch spots for my husbands new office area. The food is spot on delicious! The crispy tacos are amazing! Not the cheap non flavor shell...they are hardy, fresh and so so so tasty! The pork chop breakfast was perfect and comes with the freshest best tortillas! The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful to those who do not know Spanish well. It is a small Ma/Pa restaurant with amazing food! Lunch time crowd definitely are people who know about this hidden little treasure. Everyone very friendly. Masks are still required walking in as of 06/21/21.
