They are not so great about keeping up with their hours, or maybe they just close whenever they want to. We went before what we thought was closing time, but were disappointed when we were told they were closed. Unlike others, I haven't found the service to be particularly friendly. Outstanding vegan soul food. Senbeb recently provided food for a gathering of about 20. The service was timely and friendly, and the food was a total hit with my guests, several of whom have followed up asking who did the catering. I treat all my carnivorous friends to Senbeb and they all love it, as do my fellow vegans. I love the variety on the menu, but always come back to the Cajun chicken, served with mac 'n cheese and (my personal favorite) the mixed greens. BBQ tofu is a close second among the entrees. I'm not vegetarian, however I do like to have meatless meals every once in a while that are good and satisfying. I ordered the cajun fried 'chicken', kale and mac and cheese with cornbread. Senbeb Cafe is a small eatery with minimal seating. Seating is available outside at the back of the eatery. Their fare is vegan and okay. Personally I go for the raw food catering done by Kephra who shares space with Senbeb. Kephra food although a little pricey is actually fairly reasonable when compared to places like Java Green. Kephra's cheesecakes are the best and his raw food platters are good. They take cash/debit/credit. Kephra prepares a certain number of meals so if you don't get there early call to make sure something is there or get them to hold it for pickup. read more

I LOVE Senbeb Café. I'm a cheatin' vegan - I eat vegan foods several days out of the week to make me feel better about my weekend ribeyes and racks o' ribs. Balance, grasshopper, it's all about balance. I love this place because, as opposed to the other soul food vegan spots in the area (granted, I've only tried Everlasting Life's locations and Sweet N' Natural), their mock meats are so close to the texture and flavor of the real deal that I don't feel like I'm missing a single thing. Same with the mac n' cheese. I can't stand that mushy soy cheese casserole that seems to be the norm everywhere else, but Senbeb uses something verrrry close to the taste and feel of the real thing so I'm sold! I honestly do judge restaurants by their mac and cheese, so once I'd tried that I just kept going on down the menu. The steak and cheese - awesome. The mixed greens - AWESOME, seriously. It puts a damper on my day when they're not available. The salmon cakes - YES MA'AM. Every single time. Eventually, when I get tired of them (don't hold your breath), I'll venture on to the jerk chicken and beef & broccoli. The selection of drinks is cool too, I really like the Chai Cola for days I'm being bad and indulging my carbonated beverage addiction. The desserts - also surprisingly delicious for not containing the various animal secretions I'm used to (eggs, butter, creams). Namely the German chocolate cake - on point. You get my point, right? Just come try for yourselves! The one star off is just because I'm a spoiled 21st century brat - everything is basically cooked to order, so this is not a "let me just pop in and pick up something on my 30-minute break" spot. The food was okay, the portions for the entrees were ridiculously tiny. I ordered a large shrimp entree... i received 4 shrimp and they tried to fill up the empty space in the container with cornbread... no mambo sauce or nothing. The beautiful menu online does not match what is in the cafe. Half of the menu wasn't there. Last, the service was disgusting, the lady with the lazy eye seemed very nonchalant and annoyed. Telling me the food was vegetarian, I said, "I thought this cafe was vegan?" she retorts with, "Oh, yeah... it's vegan." Once we got the food she dug around the tip basket, jiggled it like a beggar and said, "Next time drop a dime." I paid with card because obviously I don't have cash. This service really made me not want to return especially since this was my first time here. I really wanted to like this place, but the service was terrible. My husband and I went on a Sunday. We knew it was open for brunch which is what we went for. So we walk in, there were 2 customers eating and a young lady at the register. My husband and I began looking at their menu which is up on the wall. The young lady that's processing the orders and payments had a mean look on her face, she says in a rude manner " that's not the menu, today is brunch only". Ok thanks for telling us. My husband and I both felt uncomfortable. I asked her for the brunch menu and she hands me one. Ok, there's 2 of us here. It was our first time here and no one was behind us. She proceeds to roll her eyes and says " I hate when people stand there and don't know what they are going to order". We didn't say anything because she caught us off guard, plus I am pregnant so I didn't want to upset myself. For the food, we ordered the pancakes- they were good, "chicken"and waffles- good, and "sausage" biscuit- very good. The food rating is a 4. But I would never come back here, I work hard for my money and I don't need to spend it at a place that doesn't appreciate my business. When my "chicken" and waffles came out she didn't even offer me the mumbo sauce that it was suppose to come with. I asked her and she just pointed to the place to get it. Senbeb Cafe is a tiny "cafe" connected to a small natural foods/health market. The cafe is really more of a takeout place, but it has three tiny tables and a couple chairs for people to eat. I was drawn to this place because of their vegan breakfasts, so that's what my friends and I had. For what this place is, it's pretty damn good. It doesn't pose as a restaurant, so don't expect any sit down service or pleasant atmosphere. Anyhow for $6.50 you can get tofu scramble, veggie sausages, home fries, and three pancakes. The food was great... but I think I like the brunch from Soul Vegetarian slightly more just because they have different flavored pancakes and their tofu scramble is better, but for $6.50 who can complain. The only strange thing is that they had no water. You can buy drinks from the food store and the cafe has vitamin water and some other juices, but they have no free tap water. read more

walkable from the takoma metro, this little cafe serves amazing mock meat meals, raw foods, mock meat sandwiches, deserts and beverages. we enjoyed sweet hawaiian bbq tofu and lightly spicy jalapeño mock duck, w/ brown rice, super sweet yams, archetypal yummy potato salad, and collard greens. the raw plate was a beautiful pile of avocado pie, hard to describe but wonderful, w/ jerk cabbage, and surprisingly edible raw creamy greens. for desert a magnificently tart raw apple pie. all delicious. prices are reasonable at $9 per cooked meal, and $12 for the raw plate. i splurged to try the pie for $6, but am not sorry about it. next time i plan to try the mac and cheese, the mock seafood salad, and whatever else pops up on their rotating menu. read more

I ordered food to-go, and while my door dash guy was very professional and polite, an extremely rude lady on the phone kept accusing me of calling before, which I hadn't, and asked me to give the full order again. All I needed was to replace the few items that they were out of, but she kept arguing about me calling earlier. Why wasn't my order already in the system? Why couldn't she just answer my question about which alternative sides I wanted? I had to cancel the entire order after waiting for it for an hour. Customer service is an absolute must for a business, and while I would have become a loyal customer, she ruined the restaurant for me with her unnecessary attitude. I feel bad for the door dasher who would have gotten a big tip from me for trying to mediate us. read more

I went there today for brunch. It was awful. I had the so called cheese omelet for $10.95. It was about the size of the palm of your hands with some nasty vegan cheese and onions and peppers. The food is all vegan. And yet it's very tasty. They have a variety of simulated meats like mock chicken wings. Almost like the real thing. If you are a meat eater, you will still find something you can eat. The sauces could be a little bit better. Get a large portion since it's $1 more although there are no prices posted so you'll have to ask if you're curious. There is a back patio that is nice on a sunny day. The front only has a few tables in the front window by the ordering counter. You can park on the street for free which is nice in that area since it's often $2 an hour. It's mostly carry out so even if you eat there, you'll get a carry-out container which is no big deal. Plastic knives and forks. They have free filtered water that is self service. If you've been to nuvegan, it is similar to that style. Very very friendly and attentive staff. There's a health food store directly next door so you can shop for items for your home. Nice! Approaching Senbeb is reminiscent of a college town, the street is quiet and you feel very much at ease. A small strip of commercial buildings, all occupied by good neighbors, the cafe is inviting. There is a small grocery store on one side and the carryout is on the other. The group who run the store have a strong cultural energy about them. All of the employees belong to the community of the Ausar Auset Society. The energy is composed and peaceful. They are all vegetarian and all take classes in meditation and divination which adds to the peace of the atmosphere. The food is consistent and very good! I have tried 3 or four items on a varied menu with great satisfaction. The servings are not large, but the nutritional value is enough to leave you satisfied. The grocery store allows to pick up a few specialty health product and food items that make Senbeb a unique neigborhood jewel that I hope will remain and grow. read more
