collared greens (top R), red lentils (R), salad (lower R), cabbage (lower L), yellow pea top L), chickpea dish center

Went for lunch. The outside front of the restaurant is cute, but the sign isn't the easiest to see. Limited parking spots on the street in front because almost all filled by red taxi cabs, which looked like they were waiting to be repaired in a nearby body/mechanic shop. Fortunately, I found a street spot around the corner on the side street (looks like there is a parking lot at the back of the restaurant that is accessible through an alley on a side street. There were only 4-5 patrons in the restaurant when I arrived on a Thursday. You order at the counter/bar area and then sit at a table while your meal is prepared. No one was at the bar when I first stepped in, so after a minute of waiting, I rang the small bell sitting on the bar. A woman immediately came out from the back and asked what I would like to order. I ordered the platter of 6 vegetarian dishes and asked the woman to decide the dishes, and she said ok. The wait was a little longer than I expected, but I think that is because the cook was making everything fresh. The food is served on a platter topped with injera and then with the selected dishes poured atop the injera, just like Ethiopian food. For the most part, I didn't know what I was eating exactly (I knew one dish was collared greens, another a cabbage dish, and a third was a beautiful, vibrant, fresh salad of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions in a light delicious dressing), but everything was outstanding. I later learned that the other three dishes were a lentil dish, a yellow bean/pea dish, and an orange traditional Eritrean chickpea dish. All three were delicious, but I really liked the chickpea dish. When I finished eating, I asked for a carryout container and also a takeout order of the Derek Tibsi because I wanted to try a meat dish. The woman asked if I wanted it spicy, and I said I did. The Derek Tibsi was fantastic-- cubes of beef with what looked like okra in a sauce that had some heat (next time I will ask for extra spicy) with a side of the fresh salad and collard greens. Total including 20% tip was between $40 and $45.

Went here based on the stellar reviews, and was not disappointed! Delicious food (especially the tender beef). The friendly lady who runs the place let us partake in a baby christening party that was using most of the space, and made us feel right at home. So nice of the business and the celebrating family to graciously share their catering-style tasty foods with the daughters and me. There are some great people in the world! A DJ played lively Eritrean music. Good vibes. A great intro to this cuisine. Will definitely return to Eden's Kitchen!

Vegetarian Vegan Combo - Pick Any 6

I discovered this place while working at a job site nearby and it became a weekly lunch stop. The food is AMAZING and the owners are so sweet. I ordered the pick 6 vegetarian combo every time and it was filling I usually had leftovers. When I returned to the job site I felt fine working in the heat on a full stomach after eating here because the food isn't greasy and heavy. I'm sad I wasn't able to witness a coffee ceremony before having to leave town.

the staff was very accommodating of our large group. we all enjoyed our food and definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area or living nearby. it was a great way to end our field trip to the aquatic garden!

Don't let the curb appeal fool you, beautiful inside, great food, and great people!

I was driving home after a long day at work, swearing in my head about the lack of fast casual dining/dining in Northeast. Its 7:40 and Roaming Rooster is closed...whyyyyyy? Wait...what is that light? Open? New Hair Salon?? No it says Kitchen.... food?? Real food? I made my next legal U-turn on Bladensburg Rd. to pull directly out front of a beautifully decorated Eden's Kitchen. I walked in and was greeted by a beautiful and courteous Eden. I wanted two dishes, firstly Steak and Pasta....together? Yes, together! Mesquite Steak and Marinara Pasta...I accept. And lets also have the Chicken and Rice, with these prices, why not!!! I sadly left without the steak because it was made to order, and I was anxious for my bed. I recommend calling ahead to order, you cannot beat the prices for a quality delicious meal. A generous serving of marinated chicken, rice and a side salad... $11!!! I am so pleased with this establishment and my first encounter. Head chef Eden is offering comfort Eritrean food to unite and connect cultures and the community. CHEERS!

Chicken Spris

A quintessential small business serving great food, true to its heritage. We ordered the chicken splis which was very well prepared and interesting flavours. The salad on the side was a perfect balance to the mild spiced chicken. We also got the vegetarian combo- the split peas lentil was a favorite.

My nephew introduces me to this eatery this afternoon and thankfully so. I had the vegetarian combo with injera and left satisfied with the food and the service. I could have had the lentils and injera all bu itself. Great combination or herbs and spices and not a trace of being salty. For those keeping kosher or halal there is no pork served here. I'm glad I found another gem to stop by when I am home.

Food was amazing, service is great/welcoming and overall the interior is well lite, culturally artful and relaxing. A great gem in NE DC!

Loved this Eritrean cuisine and Eritrean owned restaurant. The owner was very helpful and our food was so authentic. I am so happy that the restaurant is just around the street from me and I can't wait to return!

This place is fantastic! I was looking for a place to sit and and spend some time in... I was waiting for a friend to get home from work. The ambiance is quiet and inviting and Eden herself is very hospitable! The food was absolutely delicious; I had the fitfit breakfast and ordered a vegetable platter to go. I also got the homemade himbasha bread to go which I've been having for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's simple yet so, so different and tasty! I highly recommend this place! It is affordable, delicious and from what I can tell very authentic. Certainly made with love!!

It seems like overall Eritrean food has a similar sour spicy profile which I enjoy. I look forward to coming back to eat their enjera fitfit and try their lentil or minestrone soup. The place was homey, service was good though we could have used more water refills! Overall my favorites are the: - kitcha fitfit (cooked dough with spices, I noticed some folks put honey on it) - qlwa beef with spinach (nice tomato sauce with spices) - egg silsa (nice egg with spices)

While the staff are very friendly, there's usually only one person who mans the front, taking parties' orders, making coffee drinks, and dealing with the register - if you're looking for a quick meal, this is definitely NOT the place, as you'll spend at least 1.5 hours. We usually stick with their French Toast, the Omelet, and the Fuul - the food has been inconsistent, as the French Toast, while usually prepared perfectly with the slight crisp edges, has been mostly soggy. The omelet, in which we requested all the ingredients to be included, has been missing cheese. The Fuul's portion has gotten smaller, and the request for extra jalapenos and sauce has always fallen on deaf ears. For coffee, I've usually stuck with the mocha, which, even when requested to be extra hot, hasn't been so. The place can be extremely loud from specific patrons/parties, and there doesn't seem to be any consideration for other diners. The inconsistency with the food, the long service times, and the high volume of some of the patrons doesn't warrant a repeat visit anymore. Plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot. +inconsistency in the quality of the food served +slow service +very loud patrons/parties

We prefer to go on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when the crowds are thinner. But don't hesitate for a Friday or Saturday night if we feel like eating their great food. The fare and service is always top notch whether it's hopping or sparse. We almost always get the vegan deluxe. If we feel like some meat, we add another dish and they are all good. I also enjoy their Ethiopian beer, Habesha Cold Gold. It is light, crisp, and refreshing with a clean finish. It has a mild malt sweetness up front, very light bitterness, just enough to balance and is smooth and clean with no heavy aftertaste The Vegan Deluxe is a combination plate that includes everything from a wonderful salad with fresh jalapeños and tomatoes to a wonderful assortment of lentils spiced in different way, also cabbage & carrots, and greens. I always feel good after our meals because the food is so fresh and beautifully done. Our pocketbook is grateful, too. My wife and I can leave with a bill of about $30 including food, a beer and tip. Not many places in Bethesda you can do that. The staff always smile and are helpful whether providing standard service or troubleshooting a challenge. The ambience is not upscale, but it's clean, beautiful, and filled with good people, whether it's the customers who are always having a good time, or the manager, who makes the rounds to ensure everything is going well.

At first glance, I wasn't impressed ( yeah yeah judging a book by its cover... I know better) I was wrong. The food was very flavorful, generous, and downright satisfying. We started with the sambusas (meat and veggie). They were good, though a bit mild (personally for me), I still give the edge to an Indian samosa, but that's just me. The combo is absolutely the move. We shared a three-person platter with lamb, beef, and chicken tibs, plus a variety of vegetarian dishes (see photos). Everything came served on rolls of injera, the spongy Ethiopian flatbread. This is a hands-on meal. As in, you eat with your fingers. Yes... it was glorious. The presentation is classic Ethiopian style: a large platter lined with injera, topped with meats and vegetables spread out like they're feeding 50 million people. The trick is to tear off the injera under the food, not the extra rolls, because it soaks up all that flavorful gravy. It's harder than it sounds, but totally worth it. The main dishes were very flavorful. I was genuinely impressed by both the quantity and the depth of flavor across the entire meal. These are the happy surprises I live for. Highly recommend giving it a try.
