I've always loved Ethiopian food, and thought I had found some great Ethiopian food in DC before, but this was simply next level. My new benchmark for freshness, craftsmanship and kind service. Worth the trip.

I'm not usually into Ethiopian food as much as others but I saw the reviews and had to check it out. Tldr it was worth the visit. We got the veggie sampler which is already big points in my book. Sampler platters are such a great way to try a bit of everything and I wish more restraunts did it. We came in hungry and we couldn't finish the entire dish even with everything being pretty good. Each option was unique enough that they didn't blend together too much. The bread they give you felt fresh and tangy. The parts that were under the meals got soggy but that's the nature of the dish. I found myself wanting the vegetables to be a little less cooked and pickeled but that's probably not the way they do it in etheopia so I can't complain to much. Each was cooked well with a good amount of spices and the act of eating anything with bread makes it instantly better. They also started us out with a free starter of samosas with a slightly spicy and tangy sauce that paired well with it. Honestly it was my favorite part of the meal. The samosas we very fresh and had a great crispy bite. The lentals paired well with the sauce too. The service was super friendly and quick as well with her checking on us whenever we needed and giving great recommendations. The atmosphere was nothing special but also didn't take away from it either. The only other small thing was that when we asked for water, they only had bottles, which is a let down. Overall a good Ethiopian restraunt and if you like Ethiopian it is a great option.

This is the best Ethiopian food I have had in DC and a great value. We ordered the deluxe meat combo and everything was perfectly seasoned (plus we had plenty of leftovers!) The service was incredible too--we got sambusas on the house, and my glass of wine was literally filled to the brim! I will definitely be coming back.

This was such an excellent experience!! I am only somewhat familiar with Ethiopian food. Enough to know what some things are called and have eaten it in several occasions. But I have to say that this food was excellent!! We arrived in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday, there were only two in our party. They treated us like royalty. The server was amazing and checked on us *just enough* - she saw to everything we needed. It is a family business and the daughter is the server, and the dad was doing the cooking. He also came out several times to check on us. They were both so kind and sweet and sincerely interested in making sure we were happy. We had the veggie combo, and I got kitfo in addition, because I love kitfo. He even brought out a small dish to make sure it was exactly the way I expected it to be before he finished preparing the whole serving. Extra injera on request (we ate almost every last bite!) and they did a whole coffee ceremony just for us. Epic! So totally worth seeking this place out!! I'll be back!!

I always love trying different Ethiopian places in DC and I recently heard about this location which had great reviews, but I was surprised to see it completely empty when I arrived. We were quickly greeted by the chef and a cat! We ordered the veggie platter and the beef tibs and got complimentary samosas which were very delicious. The veggie sides were really delicious and came with plenty of injera. The beef ribs were slightly overcooked and chewy, but still quite flavorful. Very friendly owners and staff!

    Ethiopian coffee

My friend who lives in NY highly recommended this place and comes here every time she is in DC, so I had to try it. Not only is this the best ethiopian food I've ever had, but the owner is an amazing host. So warm and friendly! He remembered my friend even though she hadn't been here in a few months. We got the veggie combo and the mushroom tibs and I cannot recommend them enough. Spicy and tangy, and perfect for a chilly day. And more than enough food for two. I also recommend getting the ethiopian coffee, it comes in a beautiful pot with burning incense. It's a lovely way to round out the meal.

I found this restaurant via Google and decided to try them out because they had 5 stars. Well, I'm glad I did because the service and the food were 5-stars. It's a quaint spot and quiet, but the food speaks loudly and boldly. I ordered the lamb tibs with cabbage and yellow lentils, and a side of tomato salad and was not disappointed. The food was seasoned very well. I am now a new customer and highly recommend others visiting.

We prefer to go on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when the crowds are thinner. But don't hesitate for a Friday or Saturday night if we feel like eating their great food. The fare and service is always top notch whether it's hopping or sparse. We almost always get the vegan deluxe. If we feel like some meat, we add another dish and they are all good. I also enjoy their Ethiopian beer, Habesha Cold Gold. It is light, crisp, and refreshing with a clean finish. It has a mild malt sweetness up front, very light bitterness, just enough to balance and is smooth and clean with no heavy aftertaste The Vegan Deluxe is a combination plate that includes everything from a wonderful salad with fresh jalapeños and tomatoes to a wonderful assortment of lentils spiced in different way, also cabbage & carrots, and greens. I always feel good after our meals because the food is so fresh and beautifully done. Our pocketbook is grateful, too. My wife and I can leave with a bill of about $30 including food, a beer and tip. Not many places in Bethesda you can do that. The staff always smile and are helpful whether providing standard service or troubleshooting a challenge. The ambience is not upscale, but it's clean, beautiful, and filled with good people, whether it's the customers who are always having a good time, or the manager, who makes the rounds to ensure everything is going well.

Inside is very sleek and stylish, and I look forward to visiting at night to catch a game or relax in their lounge. As far as the food, the beef couldn't have been any more tender or well-seasoned. The thought of having leftovers for dinner later quickly evaporated, as I finished the beef, rice, and salad that came with it. The rice had a similar taste and texture to quinoa, even being long-grained. The only part that was a mission for me was the bread. I took one bite and realized it wasn't for me. This is absolutely a restaurant I'd come back to and recommend to anyone and everyone if they want authentic Ethiopian food and hospitality.

A Masterclass in Spice and Soul at Shagga…read more If you are looking for an Ethiopian dining experience that balances traditional warmth with culinary precision, Shagga Coffee and Restaurant is a must-visit. My recent meal there was a testament to why this spot remains a local favorite for comfort food with a kick. The Main Event: Spicy Chicken, curry's potatoes and Chickpeas The star of the table was the spicy chicken and chickpeas. The chicken was tender, having clearly absorbed the complex, earthy notes of a well-developed berbere spice blend. The addition of chickpeas provided a wonderful textural contrast--creamy and hearty--making every scoop with the injera feel substantial and deeply satisfying. Perfectly Paired Sides Accompanying the main were the curry potatoes with carrots, which were a standout in their own right. Often, potatoes in a platter can be an afterthought, but these were perfectly soft without being mushy, carrying a vibrant turmeric-forward curry flavor that offered a mild, aromatic reprieve from the heat of the chicken. The Beverage Balance To wash it all down: * The Ginger Ale: A crisp, bubbly palate cleanser that cut through the richness of the legumes and spices perfectly. * The Coffee: You cannot go to a place named "Shagga Coffee" and skip the brew. The strong coffee was the definitive highlight of the finish--bold, dark, and incredibly fragrant, reminiscent of a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. It provided the perfect caffeinated punch to round out a heavy, flavorful meal. Service was quality though only one person was there to serve the entire venue. More staff came as time progressed. The ambiance was that of a quaint jazzy vibe that is nestled on then edge of downtown hyattsville md hustle. Almost entirely dark wood grade with wood furniture almost as dark and bold as the coffee. The coffee was strong, stronger despite me adding 5 cream and sugar. The bold flavor kept me awake in my 2 hour drive home. The Verdict Shagga succeeds because it doesn't cut corners. From the depth of their spice blends to the robust strength of their beans, it's a soulful experience that leaves you feeling both full and invigorated.

At first glance, I wasn't impressed ( yeah yeah judging a book by its cover... I know better) I was wrong. The food was very flavorful, generous, and downright satisfying. We started with the sambusas (meat and veggie). They were good, though a bit mild (personally for me), I still give the edge to an Indian samosa, but that's just me. The combo is absolutely the move. We shared a three-person platter with lamb, beef, and chicken tibs, plus a variety of vegetarian dishes (see photos). Everything came served on rolls of injera, the spongy Ethiopian flatbread. This is a hands-on meal. As in, you eat with your fingers. Yes... it was glorious. The presentation is classic Ethiopian style: a large platter lined with injera, topped with meats and vegetables spread out like they're feeding 50 million people. The trick is to tear off the injera under the food, not the extra rolls, because it soaks up all that flavorful gravy. It's harder than it sounds, but totally worth it. The main dishes were very flavorful. I was genuinely impressed by both the quantity and the depth of flavor across the entire meal. These are the happy surprises I live for. Highly recommend giving it a try.

It's eclectic and encapsulates an element of the immigrant experience in how it's decorated. Likewise, despite three stars, I do keep coming back because the food is quite superb. Always flavorful and with a decent variety of traditional dishes on offer. Their veggie combo is among their signatures, and I often also get the Asa Spris (curried fish stew) when I visit. I do, unfortunately, have to dock a star here for some of the cuts they've had to make; a small side salad used to accompany most entrees, but now costs $9. I understand inflation is ever-present, but that's eyebrow-raising. Moreover, the injera they provide seems to be in smaller bundles than previously, usually not enough to complete a meal including the piece it is served on, which means you usually need to ask for more. And this segways to why I have to dock another star for the service quality; it could be much better lately. Typically, I find that I have to seat myself, which isn't a huge deal, but the waiters often disappear from the dining room for up to 15 minutes at a time. I've had to get up to refill my water or grab napkins from the waiter station, which I feel bad doing because it's technically not somewhere clients should be accessing on their own, but I often don't have any choice. Finally, the website hasn't been updated in years; don't look at the menu posted there unless you want to lament how inflation has taken its toll on affordability. Overall, I give Enjera props for having quality fare and a nice little venue, but there are some issues I'd encourage management to address.
