This place was everything I hoped for and more! We tried the tasting menu since it was my parents' first time trying Ethiopian cuisine. Every dish was unique but all tied together either well. I absolutely love experiences like this! Every course was explained to us on a culinary and cultural level which I adored. Our server was attentive and super friendly. She really made us feel welcomed. We went on a Saturday and had reservations, but were able to get seated about half an hour early. The space is small, and has very nice live music which helped blend into the background noise of the restaurant that was otherwise a bit loud. Very good balance. As far as the food goes, the branzino, shiro wot, and collards were my favorite. Definitely do not overlook the veg options here, to be they were even better than the meat! I truly think this place is worth every penny and a good welcoming environment for beginners to the cuisine. We will be back! read more

I seriously wish I lived in the DC area because I would be back here ALL the time! The entire experience was amazing, but Blen was absolutely the shining star of our night. She was so personable, gorgeous, and had the most welcoming aura. She made us feel comfortable from the moment we sat down and genuinely seemed excited to help us experience the food the right way. We told her we wanted something traditional and MEAT HEAVY, and she understood the assignment! She walked us through the Ethiopian platters, explained everything, and gave us recommendations that were exactly what we were looking for. And the FOOD?! Everything was delicious. The different meats, spices, sauces, and injera all came together so perfectly. There were so many different flavors on the platter, but somehow everything complemented each other. Every bite and every new combination tasted different in the best way. We left VERY happy and very full! We also tried the traditional Ethiopian honey wine, tej, and I'm so glad we did. It was sweet, smooth, and completely different from any wine I've had before. The fermented honey gives it such a unique flavor profile, and it paired so well with the food. I love Ethiopian food, and I'm looking for a new go-to for Ethiopian food, so I decided to check out Eatopia. It's on U Street, steps from the Metro station. I think this was a Sala Thai in a past life. If you're vegan like I am, Ethiopian is usually a solid option. And getting a combo ensures you try different dishes. One thing that puzzles me is that the vegetarian combo gives you a salad with lettuce instead of the usual timatim of tomatoes and onions. My favorite dishes are almost always the shuro wat and kik alitcha, but I appreciate the lentil dish, and the green bean dish was also good. On our second visit, we saw they had a mushroom tibs dish, so I had to try it since I am a huge mushroom fan. They were really good, tender and juicy and not too spicy. In spite of their A/C not working on either visit, it was still comfortable inside, and the ambiance is relaxing. It seems they have a live singer on weekends, which adds a touch of elegance. I feel like the interior of the restaurant gave higher end compared to other Ethiopian restaurants but also maintained the Ethiopian authenticity with the design and staff. I had the doro wot and it was around $30 which is more on the pricey end. Most places in dc it cost $20-$25. Although pricey, the quality of both was great. The staff was friendly and fast. First time trying Ethiopian food and it was amazing. We came for brunch but ended up getting a communal platter so I could try a bit of everything. The service was amazing and described everything to me when it came to the flavor profile of the items on the platter. I could've just had the veggie items as they were so flavorful and good. The injera has a sour bite to it but honestly goes so well with the meat and veggies. I also had a cardamom and cinnamon tea that was warm and spicy. This restaurant is phenomenal! The ambience is very nice, kind of dark inside, very beautiful elegant decor! Great for a date night. I always get the Digis Ultimate Communal Platter here. It comes with veggie and meat items and everything is SO GOOD!! Meat is always so flavorful and tender. Everything with lentils are my fav! I've also tried the coffee here before and it was so good. I'm not a coffee connoisseur, I don't know anything about flavor notes in coffee etc, but the coffee here was so good almost chocolate-y. The service is great! The server was very knowledgeable and recommended us the perfect platter. Definitely recommend their digis communal platter for two. It comes with three different types of lentils, chicken doro wot with boiled egg, three different types of beef dishes, green beans (my favorite), beets, salad, and collard greens (my least favorite). The ambience is nice, romantic, and they had live music (This was a Thursday). It was our first time eating Ethiopian food and our waitress was very helpful and informative on what we should pick. We ordered the Digis Ultimate Communal Platter which served as a great introduction to many foods on the menu. The dish really gives you a taste of many different sides and stews, all very tasty. I'd say a few were quite spicy but delicious, and everything was very fresh. I'd recommend coming to this place! Only positive feedback I'd add is that they were playing dubstep after the really nice romantic live music, so that was a bit off putting to the vibe but only thing I would offer as feedback. Awesome place and beautiful environment. From the artwork to the furniture choice this place nailed it so well. I will say the menu was slightly hard to read, meaning the descriptions did not allow me to strategically order. Luckily, we put the fate of our meal in the hand of our waiter who was thoughtful and knowledgeable, so awesome for that. We had a large group, and the communal platter was a good size, we got two platters for seven people. Must try is the appetizers and dessert! Super unqiue and fun if you want to try something new. We began with our drink order and was quietly told that they didn't have their liquor license, even though they have a full drink menu online. We were committed at this point, so we ordered Awaze tins with a veggie combo. The portion size was generous. The tibs were hit and miss with gristle, but the flavor and spice level was good. The veggies were plentiful, but the beets and cabbage were pretty lacking on the flavor. The price point is a bit higher than other Ethiopian eateries on U Street, so I expected the food to be a bit more refined as well. It wasn't. The people are just lovely. Hip atmosphere, lovely music, and no alcohol. Food selection can be tough if you're one person as they don't have a combo for one. BUT you can make it work. Veggie platter combined with lamb or beef, absolutely delicious. A bit on the pricey side. Given my choice for Ethiopian I would likely go to a less expensive spot, but if it's a date or going to the theater, then this would be a choice. We've been long-time fans, especially thanks to our best friend who's Ethiopian and always treats us to authentic home-cooked meals. So our standards are high, and this spot definitely delivers. The injera is fantastic--soft, tangy, and just the right texture. And the Tej (Ethiopian honey wine)? Probably the best we've had outside of a home kitchen. Parking is definitely tricky, but once you're inside, it's worth it. The ambience is warm, inviting, and slightly elevated, making it a great spot for both casual meals and date nights. The service is top-notch, which reflects the incredible hospitality that's such a big part of Ethiopian culture. We ordered our all-time favorites--sambusas (think Ethiopian-style empanadas) and doro wot (a must-have spicy chicken stew, which we got as part of a platter). Also got the short ribs and eatopia special tibs. It came with an absolutely yummy spice mimita. FYI, you can decide on spice level for most. This place is great. I went for dinner, and it had a really nice ambiance: dark, elevated, and relaxing. My friend and I split the special tibs which were real good. I've had better Ethiopian at hole-in-the-wall spots, but this was still super solid. Our waiter was also nice, and the food came out fast. The only issue was that they charged us $8 for a bottle of water! Upon arrival, we were asked if we wanted sparkling or still water--I just assumed still would be the complimentary tap. Womp. Eatopia Eatery sits on U St NW between 13th and 14th St. However, as soon as you walk inside, you easily forget where you are. The vibe inside has an upscale feel with low warm lighting throughout and dark walls filled with artwork. They also play low music and occasionally light incense. The customer service was great. During our meal, the owner occasionally walked around and checked in on guests to ensure their experience was good. We started with spinach sambussas and tuna kitfo. The spinach sambussa didn't have a traditional look, the breading was softer, longer and cut diagonally; just an overall more upscale presentation. The tuna kitfo was surprisingly good. It's minced and raw but the flavor was so good and smokey; it comes with collard greens and injera. For our main dish, we decided to go with veggie communal platter as well as a deep fried whole fish. The whole fish was my absolute favorite. It's full of flavor and filled with onion and green peppers. Everything was very tasty. At some point, I made my way to the restroom and was thrilled it was spacious, clean and smelled nice. The water came out automatically and hot when I went to wash my hands. That was a nice surprise since I've gotten used to expecting cold water. Overall we had such a great experience. We have a lot of Ethiopian restaurants in the area I'm from and so very happy to say this place definitely meets expectations of having delicious and well seasoned food. They're fairly new - about 7 months. It's asthectically pleasing and the customer service is amazing! The artwork is a very nice touch. The vibe is very classy and modern. Our server was attentive. We were a group of 3 and the communal platter for 2 was more than enough food, and they were happy to bring extra injera (we forgot to check the receipt if they charged for this though). They were very patient explaining what everything was and making recommendations. We also got the spinach sambussa in case the platter wasn't big enough (it was though), and it comes with 2, but they cut them in half so they were easily shareable. They were crispy and flaky and the filling and dip were yum. Highlights of the communal platter were the orange garbanzo bean dip, the steaks (all of them honestly), and the doro wot in the center. The ambiance was dark chic decorations with a very relaxed setting. The drinks looked fun but we didn't try any. I will definitely be coming back to try more! read more

The review is solely for the quality of food and the service we received during Saturday lunch. The place is probably understaffed so it took a few summons and forever to get our orders in. The food arrived 45mins later with some of it cold! The chicken tibs was okay, the veggie platter and rest of the plant food was just fine. Pretty sure there was an issue in the kitchen that day because everyone was delayed! Issues are understandable but communication could be better. The owner (presumably) was apologetic and gave us a couple of appetizers on the house since those were also delayed and came after the main course. There was some electrical work going on very close to our table which was a little noisy and bothering and I just wonder if they could have scheduled that after hours (not a wild expectation considering this is an upscale place). The good - never been to an Ethiopian place with such beautiful interior! The support staff is kind and helpful. This place could be great if the issues are ironed out. My first thought upon entering Eatopia Eatery was about how beautiful the space was. There was a lot of beautiful art to enjoy. I also appreciated that many of the dishes honored influential figures in history/the community. They have a a lot of options with and without meat/seafood on the menu, making it a good choice for groups. My meal was flavorful, and a generous portion. When they say "Love is in the food"...they mean it!! Ethiopian food is by far one of my favorite cuisines. I've been to a ton of different restaurants, some of which were in the U street area. This is by far my absolute favorite!! Not only is the food out of this world, the restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful. It's grown and sexy with lots of cultural touches. It's a great spot for a date, girls night out, or special occasions. For me the highlights were for sure the food, but also the service! We had an amazing waitress who helped with making our food selection. For the two of us we went with the meat Sambusa (comes with 2 cut in half), the veggie combo, kitfo, and the Eatopia Tibs (these were the most flavorful and tender tibs I've ever had). This was definitely a lot of food for the two of us, but it allowed us to try a bit of everything. I can't say enough great things about this place. I really hope more people discover this gem and make it their go-to Ethiopian spot. They have Jazz on Thursdays and a DJ on Fridays.
