Select Oyster Bar (2/5)
My fiancee and I went to Select Oyster Bar last weekend for Valentine's Day, and it was a very big disappointment. You can take this review with a grain of salt because it was Valentine's Day, and I am aware quality can slip for that weekend's service, but it was such an underwhelming experience that I felt I needed to write a review.
We walked into Select Oyster Bar about ten minutes before our reservation and waited at the entrance (the inside is quite small so it was tight). We waited there for about fifteen minutes before anyone came over to seat us. We had made eye contact with numerous staff during that fifteen minutes, but no one came over. We were finally seated at the window seat overlooking Gloucester Street. Once we were seated it took a while for someone to finally come over to take our order.
In my reservation I had booked the seven course tasting menu and a pre chilled bottle of Pol Roger champagne (which they said would come with pre chilled champagne flutes), but when someone finally did come over, they had given us the normal menu and I had to remind them we wanted the tasting menu and the champagne (unsurprisingly at this point, the flutes did not come chilled). The tasting menu consisted of half a dozen Island Creek Oysters, Faroe Island Salmon Crudo, Avocado Toast, Beet Salad, Icelandic Arctic Char, Casco Bay Halibut, and Romanesco Cauliflower. The price of the tasting menu was 75 dollars per person, and we ordered a bottle of Pol Roger champagne for 100 dollars.
The first thing that was brought over was the half dozen oysters which were good (same quality I would expect from any oyster bar in the area). Then after the oysters, one of the waitresses brought over two plates for our appetizers, but had to be told by another waitress there wouldn't be room for those plates on the table. After then taking those plates away, they brought out the three next courses instead of one at a time. Not only did this feel like they were trying to rush us through dinner, but given the size of the tables here it was also just impractical. The table we were seated at was only about one foot in depth, so as you can see in the pictures it was pretty cramped. Each of the appetizers were pretty decent, but nothing very special. My favorite of the three was probably the salmon crudo if I had to choose. Once we were finished with our appetizers, one of the waitresses brought over the three main courses. Each of the dishes were pretty underwhelming. They were all pretty lackluster on flavor and I really expected more given the price point of the meal. If I had to pick a favorite it would be the halibut, but it really needed something to elevate it. I thought the Arctic Char was the biggest miss of the evening.
Frustratingly, the food portion of the evening was over in under one hour, which for a 75pp tasting menu (or really any dinner for that matter), is pretty unacceptable. We felt rushed through the evening, which could have been prevented if the courses were brought out one at a time as they should have been. I understand restaurants want to turn tables, but there is no reason for less 1 and a half to 2 hours for a tasting menu.
Overall, while I can forgive a little for a lack in service for Valentine's Day weekend, the food, which is from their normal menu, was lacking and unimpressive yet quite expensive. There are many other seafood restaurants in the Boston area that offer a higher level of food at similar prices, and far cheaper options offering food of this level. read more
