Old-school, courteous and efficient service. I went into the shop not knowing whether I wanted a new lock or whether I wanted a key made for a lock I didn't have the key for. They gave me all the options, including cylinder replacement (which I didn't even think of myself). I decided on a new cylinder, and they positively encouraged me to save myself their trip fee and just install it myself. Not being much for DIY, I had them come out, anyway, but appreciate them giving me cheaper options. (Some wouldn't, I'm sure.) And the man they sent was just as nice as the guys in the shop. We own an apartment building and have been using Security Shop for a while. Their keys work, and their work is OK (just OK, not great), but the way they treat their customers STINKS! Last time they were here, I got into a huge argument with the guy, because he said they don't guarantee their work. Then, when something went wrong & I called them to fix it, there was no charge, because it was within their 90 day guarantee period! WHAT? Then what was the other guy taking about??? Last week a tenant moved out & didn't turn in his keys, so we had to re-key the front door and laundry room keys and re-key the apartment. We had the keys made first so we could distribute them to our tenants and made an appointment to do the re-keying a few days later. In between, the tenant showed up and returned his keys. So we now had $200 worth of keys which we would have had to eat, so we decided to go ahead with the work anyway. I asked them to date the bill when the keys were delivered and they refused, said it was "deceptive". When I ordered the keys, I provided the shop with the brand name and the codes for the laundry room key. When we picked them up, they were the wrong keys, but the guy said they wouldn't charge us to change the cylinder, since it was their mistake The locksmith arrived and thought he was only changing the front door locks; didn't know about the laundry room or apartment (communication?? ever heard of it??). At first he refused to re-key the apartment so one key would work on all of the locks, then decided he could do it after all. Bill time: guess what, they charged us for the cylinder for the keys they had screwed up! Said it was done over the phone and we told them to just make a "standard key"! Who in their right mind would order a "standard key" and what locksmith with any brain would make such a thing? Another huge argument. And they try to call me "deceptive"???? I am so done with this place. One of the other reviewers said they charge $60 just to come out -- they charged us $80! I'm looking for a new locksmith TODAY! read more

Terrible customer service!!!!!! Website claims to do things they do not. FAILURE!

My husband broke a skeleton key by accident. He recently had a hip replacement and apparently put all of his weight on the key so in this situation I had to FORGIVE HIM. But this almost became a nightmare until I ended up at this Security Shop and meeting Chris Perry. I spoke with Chris several times over the phone before driving from Hyde Park to their Lakeview location. Speaking over the phone ALONE gave me the confidence that he could correct my broken needs. I came in with 3 skeleton keys given to me by an antique dealer. Chris took one look at the keys, picked one of them along with the lock and within minutes he worked his magic by using a tool to grind it down to fit the lock. I AM SOOOOOO HAPPY. The charge was minimal. I will be sure to mention to all of my buyers (I'm a realtor) that their locks should be changed by this Shop! read more

Terrible customer service when scheduling an appointment. If you like your locksmith rushing you through scheduling a service call (and then being unsure if the order even was placed right) then this is your place!! I have used them several times because of convenience, and have been OK with the actual services at the job site. My review is based on the actual process and parties you deal with in-house. Don't bother asking if they got the service order correct - they have more important things to do and will hang up on you in the process. I've been treated better at a call-center after hours than the regular guys handling business for Security Shop. My recommendation is that if you don't mind a bit of rudeness mixed with stupid, these guys perform well enough once you get them to the site. I'll just deal with the technician at the job rather than talk to the people there. Horrible way to treat your paying customers. Amazing Lock is much better and I am now leaning on working with someone who sounds like they want my ongoing business. read more

Okay, these guys deserve a good review since they are now my life savers two times over. For the second time in three years, I locked myself out of my apartment while walking my dog. Both times, I had no cell phone, no wallet, no way to get in touch with anyone who might have copies of my keys, and both times I was already running late for work. Luckily, the Security Shop is right around the corner from my apartment and provides an easy solution. Today I went in and they quoted me $80 for picking my lock, which I initially thought was ridiculous, but I really did not have time to shop around. In the end, however, they earned it! The locksmith patiently spent about half an hour first trying to break in through one entrance, and then trying the other, to try to save me the extra cost and hassle of having to drill through the lock. I can now say that both people who have done jobs for me have been extremely personable and professional. Both times, I have had to wait a mere 15 minutes for them to arrive at my door. I would give 5 stars for service but 4 stars overall because the price does seem a little high (last time, when they were apparently using a different pricing structure, they charged me a $25 travel fee even though I live around the corner). However, they are definitely an asset to the neighborhood, and I am willing to pay a premium for the pure convenience. (After all, it must cost a little extra for them to maintain a business in a prime Lakeview location.) Based on my experience, if you are willing to pay a little extra, and if you are in a tight spot, you cannot go wrong with these guys. read more

About 2 months ago I was in an emergency situation and needed my locks changed immediately. It was a definite security issue and concern for my safety. I called the Security Shop mid-day on a Saturday afternoon, explained my situation, and a locksmith was sent out immediately. The customer service from the initial phone call, and all the way to the locksmith's work was impeccable. Super efficient and polite! I would STRONGLY recommend using the Security Shop and requesting a locksmith named Ray. He is EXCELLENT in his area of expertise, and a true professional. I appreciated the companies willingness to make time to come assist me. Previous companies that I called that day couldn't have cared less about my security situation, and told me that I will have to wait until Monday because they don't work after 12:30 on Saturdays. After calling the Security Shop, I will NEVER use another company for further work. They are reliable, professional, fair with pricing, and willing to accommodate customers who need last minute help.
