Eating toast in a closet doesn't strike me as the basis of a sound business model. It sounds like my childhood. "Yes, Mommy, I'm in the closet. I'm not getting crumbs on your chinchilla." This place showed up on the Yelp app as a place to have breakfast in the 'Loin. I figured it was going to be a greasy spoon coffee shop with a cigarette dangling from the cook's mouth. But no, it's a much classier affair with a marble countertop, white subway tiles, and reclaimed wood beams to sit at. The challenge occurs when there are more than four customers and you have to find an open place to take your order. Did I mention it's in the Tenderloin? They serve Five Mountains teas, make all the usual suspects with Sightglass Coffee, and use Recchuiti chocolate in their mochas and hot chocolates. Fancy. I ordered a $3.50 Cafe au Lait which met my immediate caffeine needs (photo: http://bit.ly/2OVRct5). For breakfast, they serve nine different toasts as well as daily specials like English breakfast and pesto eggs. Toasts range from plain with salted butter to Smoked Trout to Welsh Rarebit with ham and chutney. Still open during shelter in place! Boyfriend and I grabbed takeout for breakfast one morning. We got the avocado toast and pesto egg. And damn they really upgraded your basic avocado toast - not sure how, but all I know is I need to upgrade my at home avocado toast game. Here's another review recommending the burnt caramel latte! This was seriously one of the best lattes I've ever had. It's so unique and I've never seen it on the menu at other coffee shops. The caramel flavor came through perfectly and I liked it even more near the bottom of the cup because it was sweeter and more intense. The burnt taste was just there in the slightest way so it didn't overpower the drink or give a bitter taste. I want to try their other lattes but this one is too good not to get lol, the struggle. My husband hates hipster food. Long story short, we ended up each getting a toast and then a third one to split on our way out because he loved it so much. I ordered an oat milk dulce de leche latte (for my sister who is lactose intolerant) and he double checked with me about lactose intolerance since the latte syrup has milk in it. These guys made an $8 toast almost seem worth the price which in and of itself is amazing in my opinion! I stopped in with my girlfriend for a quick morning bite and was surprised by how many options they actually had. Lots to choose from if you're an omnivore and a couple classics for vegans. They also have a small pastry case and a few other drinks like sparkling water and juice. We ordered the avocado toast and the PBJ with the strawberry chili jelly (be sure to say vegan, they said they put some butter on each selection). We also added the ghost pepper tomato chutney for the avocado toast. Everything was fantastic, loaded with toppings, fresh and delicious! The toast was thick cut and had good flavor. The space itself is very small but bright, clean and cozy. Service was helpful and friendly. This is just around the corner from our new apartment, so I look forward to coming in again for some coffee and bites!
