Excellent all around. Positives in beer selection. (German heavy), TVs everywhere, clean areas, free WiFi, dining indoor and out, fans outside, stage for live music. Really only downside I saw was parking which is a huge issue for the area, but at least on Sunday's you can park anywhere nearby for free. As a beer bar and spot to watch football it's bomb. As a spot to just grab a late night beer outside also excels. And skip out on the food - the pretzel was hot, enormous, fluffy, and delicious. My partner was really excited to come here because he heard their German food was good, and he has been trying to find places that made his childhood food. We came around 5:20pm, and entered through the front door. Fortunately for us, we both go to school/work at UT, so we parked and took a short walk over. Otherwise your only other option is street/metered parking. At the front door, there's a note that said see garten host for wait list. Since it was our first time there, we weren't sure what that meant, so we waited for someone to seat us. However, 10 minutes later, with lots of glances from servers, but no service, but partner just walked out to the patio to ask for help since it was obvious no one in the restaurant bothered to help us. We eventually seated ourselves in the patio, and got our food ordered. Food came pretty fast and it was delicious, which was the only redemption point of this place. The schnitzel was thin and crispy, and the pretzel buns on the board was buttery and crispy. The servers at the patio were friendly and nice but there was barely any service, which may be due to understaffing and just lots of people. But don't even mention the staff in the restaurant that provided absolutely no help. Honestly, I would give it a 3.5, but since the food was good, I gave it a 4. Should start my review saying my only experience at Scholz was on game day, LSU at UT, so it was slammed packed. However, Scholz was prepared, and it was easy to get a beer (inside and out) or grab a bite to eat from one of the vendors they had in the beer garten. Our group had a blast, and I was able to walk around and experience all Scholz has to offer. The place is incredibly cool. There was plenty of space with multiple rooms, even on a busy game day. Still, the barroom is my favorite, with a classic wooden bar with a well-worn wooden top and medium-sized rail. There are around 10 wooden bar stools and round steel footrest. The back bar is incredible, with large columns supporting an ornate header and large mirrors. I cannot wait to return to Scholz when 1) it isn't 100 degrees, and 2) on just a typical day. Got our food to-go so I can't speak on the service but the food was great! My salad was super fresh and the giant pretzel was really good. The dipping sauces it came with were super flavorful. This review is for the recent changes. I'm not a fan. I ordered over the phone, based on the old menu. I knew some changes to the menu were occurring, but silly me assumed that meant a limited menu, not a different one, and at the time the new menu was not viewable online. The Giant Bavarian pretzel is now a Giant pretzel, which is double the old price. Supposedly, it's double the food, as it is the same as the Frank Giant Pretzel. Honestly, if I wanted a Frank Pretzel, I'd have gone the 11 blocks down to Frank. I liked the pretzel from before that was $5 and sharable with 1 person. Since I didn't want to spend $10 on a pretzel, I was offered pretzel balls, which honestly tasted like a burnt dough-ball, and to top it off, there's no more garlic butter. After trying to order a side of Mac and Cheese, and learning that was no longer available, I also ordered queso fries, thinking they would be a side of fries and a side of queso (which would have been $4.50) but again another huge plate that was nearly twice the price (8.95). At most, I would have thought it would be the price of the old chili cheese fries (6.29). I assumed WAY TOO MUCH TODAY. Finally, I ordered a to go drink. The drinks used to be $2.25, and are now $2.75, and the to go container is smaller. I was told only 4 ounces smaller, but that's still 50 cents more for 4 oz. less. I'm not sure why the huge reboot. Scholz was always packed. I know I won't be going back any time soon. read more

I was a little disappointed in the food, being from Germany I always crave good German food. It was decent, just not what I was hoping for. If you've never been to Germany it's a good place to get ok German food. Service was terrible however, my server walked up to me and just stared at me until I asked for a water. First of all, this was the first German place I have eaten at. That being said I definitely recommend this place for the food and various German beers. With special attention I'd like to recognize Merry, our waitress call from beginning to end was just an absolute pleasure and very knowledgeable. So, Scoltz Biergartin is an interesting place. Oldest Biergarten in Texas. Neat layout. Good menu items. I am writing this review after my second visit. My first visit was wonderful up until my food arrived. My schnitzel was hard as a frisbee and blackened on the bottom. It didn't cut, it cracked. I let the waitress know and she spirited the offending pork away. This is where the goodness of Scholtz's showed through. I was perfectly satisfied that the waitress was going to bring me a fresh schnitzel, that was all I wanted. I wasn't making a stink about things at all. Then the manager showed up at my table. He apologized profusely for the error, gave me a $10 gift card and said he would comp me a beer. I was more than satisfied. They brought my fresh schnitzel, perfectly cooked this time, and I had a wonderful meal. When I went to pay, it turned out that the manager had comped all of my drinks. I walked out of the restaurant for $15, with a $10 gift certificate in my pocket. Fast forward to today. I got caught out in thunderstorms and Scoltz's was close. I decided to cash in my gift card. They hosted a Crawfish boil for Fat Tuesday. Extremely disappointed. The event description said "$9 per 3lb boat" when really it's a 3lb "container" with only 1lb of food (crawfish, potato, corn) as what the cashier told us when we asked. This is misleading advertisement. Many people in line for the crawfish were also disappointed when they saw how little food $9 + tax was paying for. Was met with rude service and attitude. One of the best patios in town. Its got a classy German historic feel to it. Nice would benches. Solid beer selection and food similar to easy tiger. Sausages and pretzels will hold you down. I only knock it down because im not sure what niche it fills. Definitely check it out eventually, especially if you work nearby. I only ever come for professional events though. A little pricey, and im not 100 percent sure what niche it fills though. If you want a good happy hour bar, dive bar is next door and has better specials. Also be advised they dont do friday reservations. Weve had trouble getting a table here before with a big group. That being said its always been solid. The patio is gorgeous. They have a dece beer selection. The food is good. Its hard to screw up sausages sourdough pretzels and other beer garden type food. We walked in and sat at a table and you could definitely tell they were busy by the tables being all messed up. We sat there for a while and nobody came by so we decided to go out on the back patio to get a drink and maybe some food. Many of the tables and benches have been pulled out of the courtyard in recent years in an attempt to squeeze as many people in as possible. Inside is no better, but the lines at the bars move quickly, and most people don't mind sharing tables. If a sports station isn't broadcasting live, they get some really good bands in. As for food, go another day to enjoy their German classics. On gameday, stick to turkey legs. Avoid the burgers with the unmelted American cheese and the brauts and kraut on the soggy bun. I prefer the classic scholz shnitzel, but all are good. For an appetizer, split the pretzels among the table. It comes out warm with three different dipping sauces. One side note: you can get pretty creative with your sides on dishes (I.e. Ordering cobbler as a side). I highly suggest this place if your wanting somewhere cool and old. So glad you made it through the plague! At least a few things I've loved about Austin over the years are still around. Went early, after work b/c it's around the corner from the State offices. Server basically had most of the room so the service was a little slow, but the food service was fast. Had my BBQ sandwich with the best sauerkraut I've ever eaten. My fav lunches are their burger and the special on Thursdays, which is tender beef tips in gravy, rice, fresh garlicky green beans and a roll with their delish butter. If you're a texan, this is for you. Otherwise not so traditional. The waitstaff is kids from the college is my guess and they are alright. Polite. When i asked what it was he said mayo and when i asked if it was real he looked at me like i was stupid. That's fine. At least it was on the side. Friend's side of macaroni and cheese had a long hair in it. He couldn't eat it. I don't think it was a pube but it was gross. Extremely disappointed in their reuben sandwich. I called ahead to ask if they used a house-cured corned beef or a Boar's Head type lunchmeat. Looks like lunchmeat in photos. It's great when it's sliced thin like that but around here it's a usually a dead giveaway that they're using cheap grocery store lunchmeat. The Sholz employee I spoke with over the phone assured me it was a house-cured product. I used a Door Dash special to try the sandwich on a pick up order. YUCK. First they made it wrong with the thousand island dressing I specifically requested be left off. They remade the sandwich but CLEARLY dumped the old, cold fries from the first order on top of the remade sandwich. Ok, gross fries are a potential hazard anywhere. You don't except it at a place like $$ Scholz. I finally tried the sandwich and YEP, it's Boar's Head. Bland, salty, and gross. No way it's a house-cured product. I've been eating good corned beef from Jewish delis like Guggenheim's, Kenny & Ziggy's, Manny Hatton's, Carnegie, Cindy's, Bagelstein's, etc. for over FORTY years. I know grocery store lunchmeat from a quality, house-cured product. This was the latter. The worst part is the TERRIBLE aftertaste I'm still trying to shake hours later. It's like the nasty aftertaste from diet sodas but with meat. Diet meat? I'm sure it's the additives they use to preserve the product and get away with using the cheapest meat available in volume. THAT'S WHY I CALLED AND ASKED AHEAD. I HATE that kind of corned beef and it really grosses me out. I don't know if the person on the phone lied to "sell" a product or truly didn't know about the corned beef they use. Maybe they're located too close to the center of Texas politics for their own good. I'm furious that door dash won't give me a refund and keeps trying to kick it back to Scholz. I thought the whole point of using third-party food apps was that they guarantee the food will be what's it's supposed to be.
