Most Italian food I feel like is not worth the price, but I think all the main dishes here are worth the price for a very decent portion. The short rib and chicken parm are very big. Short rib, lamb papardelle, and lasagna were the stand out dishes to me. I think appetizers were pretty standard, nothing special. EXCEPT-- the oyster mushrooms, sooo good I could eat the whole plate. The sauce for the mussels is really yummy and garlicky. The give you bread, as much as you ask for. The chicken parm isn't the most crispy but it was very tender and thin and generously filled with sauce and cheese. Carbonara was also pretty standard. The menu is displayed on the tablet. But you don't actually order from it. The server still takes your order. I wasn't really sure what the purpose of the tablet was. The service was neither here nor there. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly memorable either. The highlight for me was the meatballs. The atmosphere when I was there was very hectic and chaotic, but the three staff members on the floor did a fantastic job of taking care of everyone in the restaurant. We had to wait a little bit to be seated, so we were able to sit at the bar and sip on some wine in the meantime. Their chardonnay was one of the favorites I've ever had. It was smooth, slightly sweet, and so buttery. Their pour was also very generous. A great way to start off my meal. We ordered the bufala mozzarella di campania appetizer (asked for the prosciutto on the side). There was a delicious thin dressing on the arugula, and the mozzarella was sooooo scrumptious. The prosciutto was also sliced amazingly thin and was so tasty. Between the various ingredients--arugula, mozzarella, tomatoes, prosciutto--everything was so balanced. A wonderful appetizer. I ordered the fettuccine truffle (one of their menu specials). The item description said something like "truffle, butter, cream," and it was 100% spot on! The truffle was very pleasant and not overwhelming, and the butter/cream was so rich. Now the pasta texture, that was AMAZING. I don't think I've ever been so impressed by a pasta texture. It was cooked absolutely perfectly--the chewiness was just to die for. It really brought another layer of depth to the dish. This meal left me so satisfied and happy. What a great find this was! Our friends and us, were visiting, and with no dinner plans, decided to use Yelp to guide us. Found Scalino, just a few minutes drive away. We called to make sure they had a table for us and when we arrived they had it ready for us. Immediately they served us water, a bread basket and olive oil. This one was pretty cut and dry. My favorite Italian restaurant in Greenpoint (so far). No nonsense vibe, super traditional. Fast service. I had the highly recommended braised lamb shank, which was fall-off-the-bones tender but a tad under seasoned for me. He gave us an iPad that lists the menu items with pictures which I thought was very useful. They offered complimentary bread and olive oil. For my entree, I got the pappardelle with tomato sauce and bacon. The pappardelle pasta itself tasted great and was cooked perfectly. However, although the tomato cream sauce tasted how it is exactly described, it was very one note in flavor. I wish there was something else to brighten the dish. My friend got the pappardelle with white cream sauce and bacon. It tasted milky and was very heavy and thick. I appreciated that they offer to shred cheese from a cheese block to top the pastas. Our night started with our server berating a bartender and demanding she give me her glasses despite both of our very obvious discomfort and refusal. Throughout the night he continued to very loudly berate us calling my partner a "little girl," "bambino" and other various inappropriate remarks. Even involving other tables in the restaurant and buddies he had at the bar with remarks like "look at this guy he eats like a little girl" etc making my partner extremely uncomfortable and offended- not to mention the other tables. I then ordered a top shelf amaro which he refused to serve to us until we had finished our food. Fully refused. I have never experienced such inappropriate and intrusive behavior from a server, it felt like we were on an episode of Bar Rescue or Kitchen Nightmares. These amongst other remarks and loud exclamations from our very hot and cold server left us with such mixed feelings as, had the service been better, I would have left a 5 star raving review.
