Met up with friends on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for some late lunch on their patio. Everything was delightful. Seated quickly and served with a smile from the amazing Emily, we knew we would be taken care of. We were adults and children - all enjoyed their meals! We ordered a variety of tacos, empanadas, ceviche, chips and guacamole, the birria plate, and a kids chicken taco meal. The birria and the kids meal came with flavorful cilantro rice. My 11 yr old demolished his birria taco and left the second to share with my husband and daughter - big hit!! I am definitely returning for the vegan sweet potato tacos. Chef's kiss. We had reservation for 10 of us and we were seated promptly. The chips and different types of salsas were delicious and so were the margaritas. I loved that they had vegetarian tacos and you could order different ones rather than a plate of the same tacos, service was very efficient even with a large party. I love coming here for happy hour after a long day. Sausal is located in Downtown El Segundo. Sausal's interior is very unique and transports you into a luxurious Mexican villa. Their "menu borrows inspiration from the foundational elements of Rancho cooking: Wood Fire, Smoke, and Slow-Roasting [and] It celebrates the bold flavors of Mexican cuisine" (quoted from their website). They offer Happy Hour every day from 3 PM to 6 PM and special Tequila and Mezcal cocktail and food pairing events. Keep an eye out! What we tried: - Monday Tlayuda Special - a.k.a. Sausal is our go-to neighborhood restaurant to bring guests to show them some of the best food El Segundo has to offer. Ambiance feels lively and upscale without being stuffy or overstimulating. It is the perfect Friday night out with friends or romantic Saturday date night. I'd recommend making a reservation, especially on weekends, but we've never struggled to get a reservation at a desirable time slot. Service is consistent and generally attentive. Food is incredibly flavorful and I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered from Sausal. I typically order tacos (fish, barbacoa, carnitas, butternut squash) and they've all been delicious -- you can't go wrong. My husband has gotten the carne asada and the queso birria tacos, and both were slam dunks :) My in-laws got the lamb barbacoa enchiladas, and it is LEGITIMATELY spicy (the waitress warned my in-laws beforehand, thankfully!) and my husband, who makes homemade hot sauce as a hobby, admitted it was pretty spicy. The Mrs. and I had dinner at Sausal last night. We had a reservation for 7 p.m and arrived around 6:50. Inside, the restaurant was packed but we decided to sit outside. Even though it was kind of chili. The best way to describe Sausal is elevated Mexican cuisine. Based upon the menu it is easy to tell that Chef Ann Conness tries and succeeds at elevating Mexican cuisine while still holding on to the traditional flavors we've all come to know and love. Our amazing waiter, Jose, arrived to take our order. I started off with a Margarita while the Mrs. and I looked over the menu. We were stuck on a few appetizers and I was stuck on two of the mains. The Mrs. asked Jose for some recommendations. We ended up ordering the guacamole and chips. It was just ok. It could have used a bit more line. The chips were really good. They were tortillas that were fried whole. We also ordered a side of the tomato salsa. The Mrs. and I decided to share the Chicken Enchiladas with Cashew Mole. Jose offered to split the portion without us even having to ask. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and it was the first time that I've had enchiladas that were crispy. Almost like taquitos. The mole wasn't obviously your traditional mole. Jose warned us it was spicy and indeed it was but we loved it. Even though we slit the enchiladas, Jose brought them on separate plates and each of us got our own portion smashed black beans and verde rice. Totally unexpected. We also weren't charged a split charge. Again, totally unexpected. For dessert we enjoyed the "Café con Leche" Panna Cotta. Incredible is all I have to say. The restaurant has a beautiful interior. Very modern and a lot of clean lines and natural earth tones. The bar was really pretty. We were able to easily find parking on the street. I've dined here twice now, for both lunch and dinner. A bit disappointed with the food and drinks on both occasions. The food is over salted and doesn't taste as if it was made fresh to order. The margaritas were either too sweet or too sour. They do have a well-priced happy hour menu, and the jalapeño poppers were delicious. The ambiance is nice with skylights and a fireplace. My family and I came here for a birthday lunch for my mom. Food was decently good. Chips and Guacamole were fresh and tasty. The cilantro lime rice was also an all around favorite for my family and I. If I had to recommend off the menu, I'd go for the Arroz Con Pollo! My second time at Sausal and my second dineLA here. I had checked out Sausal years back for dineLA and had such a great experience that I got excited to try it once again for dineLA. Their dineLA lunch special this year was $15 and included choice of drink, choice of taco and soup and salad. For soups; one can choose between Vegetarian Tortilla Soup or Chicken Pozale. For salads the choices were Caesar or Market Greens. Choice of drink included agua frescas, iced tea or soda. We chose to get their aguA fresca. The agua fresca of the day was pineapple. Later on I heard they ran out and had cucumber. For soup we decided to get one of the Vegetarian Tortilla Soup or Chicken Pozale respectively. Similarly for salads we got one Caesar and one Market Greens. Our choice of tacos were the Crispy Fish and the Beef Barbacoa. The pineapple agua fresca was so refreshing. This was the perfect pairing drink for our meal. The soups were also quite tasty though I think the Vegetarian Tortilla Soup was my favorite out of the two. The Chicken Pozale had lots of tender chicken but I'm not a big lime person and so that's the only reason why I would choose the Tortilla Soup next time. As for the salads; I thought both were quite good. They had different flavors and textures but both were a nice, light salad. Last but definitely not least was the tacos. I enjoyed my Beef Barbacoa very much. The beef was tender as well and very flavorful. Overall I enjoyed my second dineLA outing here and glad I got to visit again. read more

It's always hot, fresh, full of flavor and served with a smile. The latest venture was for my mom's birthday- and as always it was a great meal. The place was packed and the energy high. They take walk-ins, but I recommend a reservation, because they are always super busy. If you haven't dined at Sausal you should. It's just got such great food and atmosphere you'll be happy you did. We walked in on christmas eve, since this was one of the few places open, and were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Beef Birria Queso-Tacos that came with their rice and beans. I love how meaty and tender the beef was. It was tender enough to fall apart without being overly fatty. I also don't usually like radishes or raw onions but here they added a nice freshness and acidity. It's definitely not a street taco and feels very elevated. Not sure what they put in the guacamole at Sausal, but it just tastes creamier and fresher than it does anywhere else I've been. My go-tos (aside from said guacamole) are the Carne Asada, Chili Verde, and the Empanada appetizer. If you're tired of the same lunchtime salad rotation, Sausal has some nice bowls that are packed with protein and veggies. Crave-worthy. Managers Amy and Oz will take great care of you. I came to Sausal for a restaurant week lunch with my mom and partner. We found street parking a couple blocks down and walked over to the restaurant. It was mid-October, so the weather was still nice and many people were sitting in the patio. We opted to sit inside though and there was lots of tables open during lunch on a Saturday. We all opted for the $15 Lunch DineLA special which comes with a drink, taco, soup, and salad. Pretty good deal for only $15! We also ordered the salsa trio, which had some interesting spicy and sweet salsas. The agua fresca drinks were good and we chose the Chicken Pozole soup, market greens, and crispy fish and beef barbacoa tacos. Everything was pretty solid! It was a good portion of food and I think it was nice to try a little bit of everything. Overall, I think the DineLA special was pretty good. The restaurant has a nice interior and it's nice to have lunch in the El Segundo area every once in awhile. I might try the dinner special next time they have DineLA. read more

I feel like the South Bay is saturated with upscale Mexican restaurants, but I'd say this is one of the better ones. I've been a couple times and both times the food was excellent.
