My sando was a huge let down. A lot of reviewers mentioned their orders were dripping in sauce but mine was the opposite. Ordered Taiwanese crispy chicken and it did not come with a drip of black pepper soy mayo. Bun was cold and the chicken was dry. It def tasted "double fried" according to the sando description but not "tender" though. Staff clearly did not want to be there. This next part is more of a general comment for Bow Market but it was very hard for us to find seats as there were lots of visitors to the market that weekend. This is probably closer to a 3.5/5 than a 4/5, but it wasn't all that bad. My basic feeling is that if I'm paying $8.50 for poutine, I want a pretty substantial portion of fries, but the $8.50 portion was pretty tiny. And on top of that, the toppings push the regular size over $10, which is pretty expensive for a small amount of potatoes with a small amount of toppings. The actual cheese curds were also disappointingly cold and a bit hard in some places. The ones buried deep in the fries were a little bit melty, but the ones near the top were really cold, hard, and not too pleasant. HOWEVER, the fries themselves were very good. They were perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside with the perfect amount of salt to them. The mushroom gravy was also quite rich and actually tasted a little like truffle even though it was miso mushroom. There was pretty good coverage as well, and most of the fries had some amount of gravy touching them. Only after I ordered did I realize the entire menu was vegetarian, so I want to come back and try some of the other items. The crab cake, carnitas, and hot dogs look really interesting, and I'd love to give them a try next time! All in all, this was a mixed bag. The fries and gravy were good, which was the heart of the dish, so I give this a pretty high score. Finally was taking a walk around Bow street court where all the neat eating/retail tiny stores were. Got the munchies so family and I went on a tasting spree. Now, we found out that the tables that are situated around the center of the area needs to be reserved online before you can sit in those reserved tables. Once you check in and they seat you, you can scan the QR on the table and actually order from from your phone and the shops bring you the food when its ready. Very neat. Absolutely amazing Vegetarian food! When first coming to Saus I had no clue it was a plant based restaurant. Besides reading the menu, you wouldn't be able to tell while eating the food too! We ordered 2 of the Chef Special Burgers and made them meals (came with fries) and a "Big Poutine." 100% we ordered too much food. This totaled to roughly $55 which took me for surprise. Highly disappointed in the total price, but highly impressed with the food. So call that a compromise. The service and atmosphere were excellent! You could find a dozen of card & board games to play alongside a mini merchandise area. My family and I aren't vegetarians and we were expecting normal chicken. While it is our fault we didn't read the menu closely enough, the food was still overpriced and tasted bad. They heavily relied on dipping sauces for flavor. My sandwich was drenched in sauce and the flavor overpowered the sandwich. The restaurant smelled of raw egg and was dirty with customers leftovers. The seating was akward and hard to sit together. My mother kindly asked one of the employees to turn down the loud music that was playing. I ordered a Cauli-Falafel along with poutine with ALL toppings (sambal, kimchi, shallots, wonton strips, impossible chili, beyond dog, and secret saus). THE RENNY: A Beyond Meat sausage, Chicago-style at the vegetarian branch of Saus in Bow Market (Somerville MA). [Actually, I'm not sure if it was Beyond Meat or Impossible Meat, since both names appear on the menu, but the actual name of this dish was "The Renny Beyond Dog".] The first time I've had a Beyond Meat sausage, it was surprisingly "meat-like", but with zero snap and the texture of a crumbly breakfast sausage. So not very hot dog-like, but tasty enough. The fries were quite good, on the fairly well done side, served with a choice of different sauses (I went for Chipotle mayo). Took it over to Remnant Brewery and got a "Dream Pop" (smooth oat pale ale with juicy American hops; 5.6%), which was delicious. You can bring outside food into the brewery or their outside seating. I like that Saus serves their food on sturdy aluminum quarter-sheet pans, which they trust you to bring back afterwards. An attractive spot inside, with friendly service and good music. Not a huge fan of the dog, but properly Chicago-style (I used to live there). I'd still go back again if I was hanging with the veggie crowd. read more

Meh. Even if the food is pretty good, if the service is subpar, I won't be back. Reading the reviews, there was another Yelper who also had a negative experience re: dietary restrictions. When I got there, the cashier was nice enough. I told him I had a nut allergy and he didn't know if the item I wanted contained anything. He pulled out a ingredient card and ended up asking one of the cooks. I then followed up by asking what type of oil they use (a standard question I frequently ask because of my medical condition). Then, I heard the cook snickering from behind the counter/wall. I leaned back and asked him "what was that?" and he was very rude--saying that he wouldn't have said it was okay if there was anything off with the oil. He eventually said he'd do the prep that was needed, but after already being disrespectful about it. The important thing is that I (and many others) have a serious food allergy where precautions need to be taken and that often includes questions to ensure that I am good to go--especially if I get the vibe that someone isn't sure (like the cashier originally). I then paid, turned to leave, and heard more snickering. Wtf? Again, these are standard questions that people living with food allergies have, and this type of behavior made me regret grabbing dinner from this place. With so many food options to choose from in Somerville, this place doesn't deserve a return visit. read more

If I could I'd give it a -5 stars, I would. Here's what transpired. 1) I visited and ordered. Sat on the stool with my partner. It's a nice little curved alcove. There's a little circular window looking into the kitchen activity. Lot of nice murals etc. on the outer wall. Pleasant ambience. 2) The ambience inspired me to take a photo of the murals surrounding the circular window, and maybe an out of focus view of the kitchen. I could see a nice frame, a nicely composed photograph somewhere in there. I'm not a photographer, so all I needed to do was try a few compositions. Kill the waiting time thinking about "artistic" photography. It was a Friday or Saturday evening after all. Fun! 3) As I began to take a pic, a guy yelled from inside, "don't take my pic!" ... "Geez at least ask before taking!" I responded: "I'm not taking your picture, just the window and the out of focus ..." But before I could finish he continued to yell at me. He took off his little apron and stormed to his what must be manager, complained, and just left the premises. Note, I hadn't even finished taking the first pic when he yelled at me. 4) Manager comes out and escorts us out of the premises. I felt embarrassed, mistreated, angry, and frustrated. My evening was ruined, and so was my partner's mood, who agreed with my feeling this way. We just walked home in silence. I hope nobody else is mistreated this way by these people who don't understand that hospitality goes beyond just chairs and murals: how you treat people matters. Saus recently opened a second location in December 2018 at Bow Market. I had never even heard of Saus and was completely oblivious to their first location in Boston. However, seeing a drool worthy post on Instagram on Vegan Food Plug of vegan hot dogs and hamburgers set my sights on the veg eatery. For now, finding Saus's Somerville location using Apple Maps is impossible. I had to download Google Maps to get me here. It seems like the restaurant is aware of the navigation issue and working on fixing this problem. We visited around 5PM on a Sunday. Unfortunately, half of their menu items were sold out even though Saus doesn't close until 8pm. The only options were fries and a basic impossible burger. I got the poutine ($~8) with kimchi (+$2), which in hindsight was a horrible combo. My guy got the impossible burger (~$11). We both opted to make it vegan. POUTINE - Not enough gravy and too much kimchi. There was only 1 cheese curd in the entire serving. Please pour on the gravy! IMPOSSIBLE BURGER - It was just OK. Nothing spectacular or particularly memorable. I wish it was warmer. I plan on coming back after a while. I'm thinking my visit just reflects growing pains. Saus is one of two places that I've ever been in my life that makes me excited to order vegetarian food. That's an accomplishment because I'm not a person that usually feels satisfied or content without some lean protein in a meal. No matter what you order on the menu, you will think you're eating meat. If you don't like meat, then you'll be treated by some of the best vegetarian food you'll ever have. We shared a few different things and the mushroom gravy poutine and the Cauli-Falafel sandwich were probably my two favorite things we had. The impossible burgers and sausages were likely the biggest surprises as they are made to simulate meat but made entirely out of plant proteins and fats. It's surprisingly convincing, too. If I were served this without being told any of it were vegetarian (vegan too, I believe) I would never be able to tell the difference. The interesting thing about this place is that despite all this great food, what makes each dish special is the vast array of homemade "saus" they offer. Every condiment is made fresh and in-house (including the ketchup), with the menu beckoning you to try a variety of them to determine which is your favorite. It's kind of an interesting take on the salsa/guac bars you see in Mexican restaurants but here they are used to top fries, poutine, sandwiches, and grain bowls. We tried a bunch of them including the avocado crema, hot 'saus', truffled ketchup, ketchup, stone-ground mustard, and bbq sauce. All were delicious and well-balanced, but I will say as a Pittsburgh native, I still prefer the Heinz 57 Ketchup to any other alternative ;) The location in Bow Market is a bit tricky if you are not familiar with the area, but it is in the square on the lower level. Not sure why people are complaining about the location or finding it here, but I guess everyone needs something to complain about (insert eye roll). The seating is first come, first serve with limited high top tables (about 4 of them I think) and then bar-style seating along the walls. It's not idea if you have a big group, but when we were there we saw plenty of take-out orders coming and going which may be a better option if you are local (or using the square seating when it is warm out). The process for ordering and getting your food can be a bit slow compared to fast food places, but you can see into the prep area and everything is made to order to prevent soggy fries or buns for these flavor bombs being delivered hot and ready to eat to you. Whether you are looking for a quick take-out order, a cheaper than average lunch, or just a casual dinner Saus will not disappoint. I find the price point to value ratio to be one of the better values in the Somerville/Cambridge area and the food really impressed my wife and myself equally (which is extremely uncommon). We'll be back for sure, and I couldn't urge you enough to give this a try. Go in with an open mind and you'll be rewarded with a full stomach and plenty left in your wallet to enjoy the rest of your day or night. read more

AWESOME food, SHITTIEST service I have ever seen (only applies to 3 out of the 4 employees working on the Sunday 6th June, 2021 at 7:55pm). Ordered food for 6 people 5 mins before the store was closing (without realizing it was closing time), sensed the frustration and tried to be as fast as possible. Their credit card machine was not working, so had to pay in cash (did not have too much and since we were rushed, did not think about a tip). A young curly haired - crop top tshirt - taunted us for leaving a 4 cent tip (which was not a tip - it was just the change from paying cash). We did not react, waited patiently for the order. Got the order (cold burgers, buns not at all heated or grilled, and all of them were stacked on top of the fries - with no box for the fries). We went back to request a box for the fries...all 3 employees (except for the young girl at the front counter) threw F-bombs, crop topped asshole asked us to "get out", crop topped jerk also asked us to come outside (for a fight), and the big lady, other influenced boy, the the crop topped jerk visibly and audibly cursed and/or displayed disrespect. We were happy to take our business elsewhere...we were happy to not even order had they told us it was too late for a big order. We were perfectly courteous, but the demand for a tip, curses, bad quality food, no respect for customers, and threat ruined the day for us. The Bow Market management were OUTSTANDING and apologized to us multiple times (refunded reservation funds, gave a free reservation, and gave us a free bottle of wine that we were contemplating of buying earlier....simply above and beyond, and for no fault of their own). The crop topped jerk seemed to get away for his actions as we saw him laughing while talking to the front staff later while leaving. While Saus is technically a poutine shop, their other entrees are so good, that I honestly recommend passing on the poutine and ordering a burger, sausage, or salad instead (and share a side of poutine, if you're with a group). My absolute favorite is their BBQ impossible burger ($13), which comes with fried shallots, cheddar, scallion slaw, pickles and BBQ sauce. I order it vegan, so they swap the cheddar with shredded vegan cheese. The impossible burger is always crispy yet tender, and the flavors of the slaw, pickles, and BBQ sauce are so complimentary. I never want to try new things because this burger is reliably delicious. I've also ordered their "shawarma special" ($9) , which was a small impossible burger (about 1/2 a normal patty), with raw tomatoes and onion, fries (!!), pickles, and chickpea mayo sauce. I thought that it was a good smaller entree, but didn't have quite the impact of trying their BBQ burger for the first time. My boyfriend's favorite is The Nutty Cilantro Bowl ($9), which comes with cilantro vin, papaya slaw, herbs, sweet pickles, fried shallots, spicy peanuts. I'm not a fan of raw cilantro, but even I had to admit that all the flavors worked really well together, and that the bowl had a nice variety of textures. I would highly recommend this bowl if you're craving a salad. Finally, the poutine. When we do order the poutine, we order it vegan style, which comes with fries, vegan cheese, and miso mushroom gravy, and then we add kimchi on top.
