We were passing through Flagstaff on our way to Chicago in the early evening and we were getting the hungries. After searching the map for a while we decided to try Sachmo's Cajun and BBQ. Pulling up outside we found the one illuminated storefront in a line of shops. Stepping inside we found welcoming staff and a tantalizing list of tempting options on the Satchmo's menu. We decided to order a Fried Catfish Poboy, a Sliced Chicken Poboy, Coleslaw, and Red Beans and Rice. The poboys were tremendous! The fried catfish poboy had a generous amount of fried catfish on a fresh bun accompanied by coleslaw, tomato, and Cajun remy sauce. The combination of flavors in this generous sandwich was tantalizing and delicious! The chicken sandwich included sliced BBQ chicken combined with coleslaw, tomato, and the Cajun remy sauce. Luscious flavor in this wonderful sandwich! The coleslaw had a spirited vinegar taste accented with mild peppery thin slices of jalapeño. So good! The red beans and rice included slow simmered red beans with house blend seasoning blanketing perfectly cooked white rice. So sumptuous! We loved our first visit to Satchmo's! The food was great at one time however went downhill earlier this year. One example was they had smoked chicken breast and that has been replaced with chicken thighs. Lower cut of meat and they give you less food for more money. read more

We were very excited to try this Texas style BBQ restaurant while visiting Flagstaff but we were sorely disappointed. (1) No option to request flat vs point. I was told that's just the way we do it here and that they pull some of each when serving. The entire pound of brisket was all the flat/lean and was definitely wasn't just sliced/had been sitting in their ovens to serve. (2) The brisket tasted like and had a texture that was similar to a sous vide and then put on the smoker for a bit vs a long visit to the smoker. (3) Very little smoke flavor and the seasoning wasn't anything close to typical TX BBQ. Was very bland. (4) The Andouille sausage was also very bland on flavor and seemed to just be grilled and split in half. The owners could benefit from a visit to Franklin or Goldie's BBQ, to have more perspective of the flavors, service, options and experience. read more

We were looking for something new in Flagstaff, a tasty takeout dinner we hadn't already tried. Having discovered Satchmo's on Yelp, I headed there and was greeted by a friendly, helpful young lady. I enjoyed a freshly-squeezed glass of lemonade for my short wait. Not able to choose just a few menu items, we had decided to order a selection. Hubby's Shrimp Po Boy sandwich was topped with a tasty slaw on a just-right bun. My King Fish Platter featured a light cornmeal crust on tender white fish, served over spicy dirty rice. Additionally, we had awesome Mac and cheese, gumbo, red beans and rice, potato salad, and tasty seasoned Tator Tots. Everything was well-seasoned and delicious. Bread pudding for dessert had a slight hint of apple and the crispy crust was perfect. Lots of food would make for delicious leftovers. This place is laid back, and they include crayons for drawing on the table. Their food is all so good. I found Satchmo's while stopping for gas and thought why not give it a try! The cashier was extremely kind and polite and I felt welcomed the second I stepped into the building! The slaw is killer and the smoked beans have so much flavor. The shrimp po boy was good but the only thing negative I have to say about it was you could tell the fryer oil was old because of the taste it left on the shrimp. I really wish I had a picture to share, but I didn't bring my phone in with me. I ordered the half pound brisket and a side of spicy coleslaw and a drink. It was $34 and some odd change. The meat came with four slider buns and some pickles so I made four sliders out of it and alternated layeres of their spicy and their sweet sauces in between each layer of meat and put a pickle on each sandwich then I added the spicy coleslaw on top of them as well and I ate two of the sliders and about a third of the coleslaw basically saving 1/2 for later in the evening so I got two meals out of it. It was outstanding mouthwatering brisket and I will return. I will also add that my friend got the Cajun blackened fish and I am not a real big fan of most fish, but this fish was outstanding and I will get that the next time I'm in town and I go back because I will be BACK !!!! read more

June 22, 2022. Wednesday. My wife and I stopped here for "linner" on the way back from Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Upon entering, the line had three people waiting and a side line had a robust take-out business. This restaurant is named after the late, great Louis Armstrong, a trumpeter and vocalist born in New Orleans in 1901. I enjoyed the decor of Jazz and Blues musician paintings on the inside of the restaurant. My wife ordered the Gumbo, andouille sausage, shrimp, rice and Trinity ($8.99). I had the large fried catfish bites in buttermilk and cornmeal batter with tater tots and remoulade sauce ($16.99). We also ordered the 10" round of mac n' cheese topped with crushed tater tots ($12.99). It took about twenty minutes for our food to come out. I will admit they cook a mean tater tot here. Perfectly brown, crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful potato on the inside. The baked mac n' cheese topped with crumpled tater tots had a bacon taste to it that elevated it way above traditional macaroni and cheese. Unfortunately, my catfish bites were small and extremely dry. They had too much breading and were very dense. I wish this main entree had been better because I love some fried catfish. Maybe bigger fillets and less breading would help keep the fish moist? We paid a total of $38.97 for some small, dry catfish bites and pretty good side dishes. This food is very dense and filling so you might consider ordering a bit less than you normally would. That's why they offer small entrees. read more

Nice local place. Comfortable patio and sufficient seating inside. You order at the counter and they bring it to you. Was popular on an early Thursday night. We tried both the Gumbo and Jambalaya. If you like spicy heat, you'll love them both. I was pleasantly surprised at the serving size, as the past few cajun restaurants I've eaten at have shrunk the quantity down to unsatisfying morsels. This was just the right amount to fill me up. Had a couple of the most delicious Wanderlust Pan American stout beers to accompany the meal. Our servers were super friendly and helpful. Stopped in just for gumbo--it's not a huge portion, but it was enough for a late lunch sort of meal. The good: the shrimp were cooked perfectly with a great texture, and the gumbo was seasoned appropriately with just the right spice level. Definitely hit the spot. The less good: the roux was too light, and the rice being on the bottom rather than the top made it kinda soggy. Really the lightness of the roux is what makes this 4* rather than 5*--it's just missing a certain depth and edge that's central to all the (many) gumbos I've had in New Orleans. read more

My only criticism is that i wished they had some sort of combo platter because having ONLY the burnt ends left me with BBQ fomo!! The high Yelp rating was the leading factor in selecting Satchmo's. The rating is well deserved. The food and staff were excellent. I had the Blackened Swai Filet on Jambalaya. They were properly seasoned and prepared. Definitely spicy and tasty. The Swai and Jambalaya were a nice combination of flavors and textures. They were served hot to my table. The ambiance was simple, but clean and well maintained. The various photos adequately convey the atmosphere. The temperature was comfortable. The restaurant is not large with seating for 20-25 inside and the same outside. I appreciated the jazz soundtrack playing over the house speakers. Our group had three different items on the menu. We had the Cajun blackened fish on a bed of rice, the shrimp po'boy, and pulled pork sliders. The fish was seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. The shrimp po'boy suffered from an excessively wet coleslaw, that was very flavorful, but resulted in a giant bath of vinegar dressing all over my plate. I also would have preferred a toasted on the exterior roll instead of a grilled cut side. The shrimp were fabulously flavored and cooked to perfection. The pulled pork was nicely smoked and juicy, but was extremely salty. We also had the house cocktails which were excellent. The staff were very nice and took care of us. FOOD - tater tots (5/5): I would get these!! They spice it up with maybe bbq flakes??? Dunno but the crisp of these tots are perfect. I wished I had more. - blackened catfish with jumbalaya (4/5): ooof the jambalaya stole the show on this. I will always use this jambalaya as a standard now LOL it was so good. There's some kind of sausage in it too which made it a perfect dish on its own. Catfish was cooked well and was soft enough to break apart with a fork but I did not enjoy how salty it was. If anything, order the jambalaya by itself. - sliced brisket (4/5): it came with a lot of large slices of brisket which I appreciated. Also 4 mini buns to make little sliders with the brisket. It wasn't too dry, but I had to dip it in bbq sauce with each bite for more flavor. - pork ribs (4.5/5): got the half rack and we easily chowed down a couple pieces within 5 minutes. Contrasting to the brisket, it was so soft that it peeled off the bone sooo easily! I could eat it on its own or with the bbq sauce I would say this is the best Cajun place I've ever tried! Hole in the wall Cajun place that does some fantastic BBQ. FOOD - Satchmo's presents itself as Cajun, Creole, and BBQ. Our party leaned on that last, ordering pulled pork and brisket, as well as a big bowl of seasoned tater tots. The food is served by quantity -- half-pound of meat, with four slider buns, or a pound of meat with eight slider buns. The idea is to share at the table, which we did. The pulled pork was excellent, but the brisket was outstanding, and cut-with-a-fork tender. The only problem was that there was too much meat for the number of slider buns we had. Not that there was anything wrong with just taking a fork to it and eating it as-is. Tater tots (a one-pound basket) were done perfectly, and seasoned quite well. DRINK - We had a couple of local beers, both of which were good. The drink menu is not extensive, but serviceable. SERVICE - Service in taking the order and in bringing it out to us (in phases) was friendly and fast. AMBIANCE - Since we were traveling in the time of COVID, we decided to sit on the patio, a cinder-block walled compound just off the main restaurant. It was sort of whatever the opposite of chic is, but in a good way -- picnic benches, some with umbrellas, an oddly-shaped space partly shaded by trees, some murals on some walls, some plants here and there, edison strings overhead. OVERALL - This is not a place to bring a date to for something fancy. But it's just endearingly homely and homey, and the food is solid good. The rice was a nice complement to offset the kick. 1/2 lb beef brisket has a good ratio of meat vs fat and can be cut with a fork and spoon. The slider buns weren't impressive and sort of bland. They gave a sweet and spicy sauce to eat with it and both were interesting and delicious. The gumbo had a hint of bitterness that was surprising but great otherwise. Outstanding BBQ here, truly great! Easily better than anything you could get in Alaska! The one thing you need to know: the food here is served "family-style". This isn't a "plate BBQ" place. What do I mean? I mean portions are pretty big and pretty ala carte. For example, you could order a pound of brisket. And that's exactly what it is. There's no "choose 2 meats and 2 sides" meals. Luckily, we had a crew and we got a little bit of everything: Pork Ribs Brisket Tots Mac and Cheese And everything was awesome! Well, except the brisket, it was merely "good".
