Pulled pork was Delicious! The 1/2lb 4 slider option with toasted buns is perfect to share. My wife liked the sweet BBQ sauce over the spicy option. Catfish bites were delicious with perfect cornbread batter. I liked the remoulade sauce. They come with sweet potato fries. Potato salad was just pallet cleansing and sort of bland. The cornbread slices (6) looked amazing on the table next to us. Patio seating can be hot in the sun, but luckily we brought beach towels. The high Yelp rating was the leading factor in selecting Satchmo's. The rating is well deserved. The food and staff were excellent. I had the Blackened Swai Filet on Jambalaya. They were properly seasoned and prepared. Definitely spicy and tasty. The Swai and Jambalaya were a nice combination of flavors and textures. They were served hot to my table. Might be my favorite restaurant in Arizona. I don't think I've ever had a bad or mediocre meal here. The gumbo, blackened catfish/shrimp po-boys, pulled pork, dirty rice, tots, spinach artichoke dip are all phenomenal. Nothing over salted, spiced a good amount, and flavors galore. Beers on draft are great too. The people at the counter are also very friendly as goes for the people that drop your food off at the table. Kindly let you know items you can add more spice too or any specials you may be interested in. Cool space inside and out. Inside is Cozy/small, where you can grab crayons and draw on the butcher's paper on the table. Cool Louis Armstrong posters and trumpets on the wall. I was really excited to stop at this restaurant because there aren't many Cajun/creole places around! You order first then find a place to sit. Even though there wasn't a wait, I felt like the restaurant was always busy with customers. The tables opened up just in time for the next party all the time. FOOD - tater tots (5/5): I would get these!! They spice it up with maybe bbq flakes??? Dunno but the crisp of these tots are perfect. I wished I had more. - blackened catfish with jumbalaya (4/5): ooof the jambalaya stole the show on this. I will always use this jambalaya as a standard now LOL it was so good. There's some kind of sausage in it too which made it a perfect dish on its own. Catfish was cooked well and was soft enough to break apart with a fork but I did not enjoy how salty it was. If anything, order the jambalaya by itself. - sliced brisket (4/5): it came with a lot of large slices of brisket which I appreciated. Also 4 mini buns to make little sliders with the brisket. It wasn't too dry, but I had to dip it in bbq sauce with each bite for more flavor. - pork ribs (4.5/5): got the half rack and we easily chowed down a couple pieces within 5 minutes. Hole in the wall Cajun place that does some fantastic BBQ. FOOD - Satchmo's presents itself as Cajun, Creole, and BBQ. Our party leaned on that last, ordering pulled pork and brisket, as well as a big bowl of seasoned tater tots. The food is served by quantity -- half-pound of meat, with four slider buns, or a pound of meat with eight slider buns. The idea is to share at the table, which we did. The pulled pork was excellent, but the brisket was outstanding, and cut-with-a-fork tender. The only problem was that there was too much meat for the number of slider buns we had. Not that there was anything wrong with just taking a fork to it and eating it as-is. Tater tots (a one-pound basket) were done perfectly, and seasoned quite well. DRINK - We had a couple of local beers, both of which were good. The drink menu is not extensive, but serviceable. SERVICE - Service in taking the order and in bringing it out to us (in phases) was friendly and fast. AMBIANCE - Since we were traveling in the time of COVID, we decided to sit on the patio, a cinder-block walled compound just off the main restaurant. It was sort of whatever the opposite of chic is, but in a good way -- picnic benches, some with umbrellas, an oddly-shaped space partly shaded by trees, some murals on some walls, some plants here and there, edison strings overhead. OVERALL - This is not a place to bring a date to for something fancy. But it's just endearingly homely and homey, and the food is solid good. Brisket was chewy and cold, their fan favorite Tots are just freezer tots with a whole container of "special" seasoning on it (Lawry's Seasoned Salt), and the Mac tasted like the stuff I bought at Walmart in college with my last few dollars in my wallet with the left over tot crumbs sprinkled on top. Outstanding BBQ here, truly great! Easily better than anything you could get in Alaska! The one thing you need to know: the food here is served "family-style". This isn't a "plate BBQ" place. What do I mean? I mean portions are pretty big and pretty ala carte. For example, you could order a pound of brisket. And that's exactly what it is. There's no "choose 2 meats and 2 sides" meals. Luckily, we had a crew and we got a little bit of everything: Pork Ribs Brisket Tots Mac and Cheese And everything was awesome! Well, except the brisket, it was merely "good". It was our first time here back in Feb 2024. We came because they told us the Jambalaya here was food. So we gave it a try. I will be honest. We did not like it maybe we went the wrong day or something happened in the kitchen. Since the Jambalaya had a lot of Greasily Crud from the flat top or something. We were not too happy about it but the spice was there. Service was friendly and nice. The deco of the place is nice very welcoming. Sadly we won't be back since it was a trip we had. The jambalaya is what I personally had and although it was spicy, man it was fabulous!! The mac n cheese did not look appealing and so when we ate it we confirmed what we all already knew. I'll start with what I liked: Pulled pork- very good. Both spicy and sweet barbecue sauces were very good. And I LOVE when places toast the buns for the sandwiches (which they do). If you like spicy heat, you'll love them both. I was pleasantly surprised at the serving size, as the past few cajun restaurants I've eaten at have shrunk the quantity down to unsatisfying morsels. If you're sensitive to spice these dishes definitely pack a kick ! The cast iron Mac and cheese was topped with bacon and didn't disappoint! Jalapeno cornbread was delicious! We devoured it at the table! For the mains we had the shrimp po boys and the fried catfish platter ! So yummy! This isn't your traditional sit down restaurant. When you arrive you're greeted with friendly servers who take down your name (if there is a wait) and then they take your order at the register once they have a table available for you.
