I was fooled by the reviews. The food was absolutely terrible. We didn't even finish eating our meal. The "pulled pork" sandwich came out with two large chunks of meat. I think someone forgot what the pulled part is supposed to mean. I had the "Kings Gumbo" so I could try both the gumbo and the jambalaya. I felt like I was eating watered down Zatarans from a box. We also ordered the dirty rice so we could try it and it was burnt. There were small chunks of black whoknowswhatitwas. The staff was friendly enough to, but to call this place Cajun is an insult to Cajun people and their food. Stay away. read more

Superb food, best we had in Flagstaff. My wife and I ordered the blackened fish (swai, an Asian variety of catfish) and gumbo, each with jambalaya. The fish was exquisite, juicy and very flavorful. The gumbo was quite good, but not quite the level of the fish. The portions were of moderate size, and we were very hungry (drove down from Page, spent 5 hrs in Grand Canyon), so we ordered another blackened fish and half rack of ribs. The ribs were succulent, fell off the bone. To wash it down, we tried the Railhead Red amber ale from Lumberyard. One of the best amber ales I've had anywhere. Great, friendly service!! We raved about the food, and the chef gave us bread pudding, complimentary. Delicious as well. Satchmo's is Highly recommended! Note: it's not in the best part of town, need a car. My chum and I bypassed a ton of restaurant options by the Grand Canyon in favor of one at our next stop (Flagstaff), which was absolutely the right call. Satchmo's is in a pretty generic strip mall and easily overlooked, but this was an all-timer BBQ place that deserves to be noticed - and blows all the tourist trap places nearby out of the water. We showed up for lunch here last Sunday during MDW around 2ish. There were a few diners, but it wasn't particularly crowded. Since we'd been wandering around the Grand Canyon for the entire morning and I didn't see any obvious shade in the patio area, we opted for indoor seating. It's a cool spot - with the Cajun emphasis, it's not a surprise that there was a lot of wall art dedicated to jazz legends, etc. There's also a lot of hustle and bustle, in particular a busboy who yelled "door!" every time he went into the kitchen with dishes to alert anyone potentially on the other side (which amused my friend every single time). Definitely showed at least that everyone was working hard and not hanging out on TikTok or anything. We'd both amassed pretty significant appetites on our South Rim adventures, so quite a bit of food was ordered. I went with the Sliced Beef Brisket (1/2 pound) option, and we got two sides to share - the tater tots and the cornbread. Everything came within about 10 minutes or so. The Brisket was excellent - very tender and flavorful, helped along by the conveniently placed BBQ (both sweet and spicy) options on the table. It's a very decent helping even as the smaller dish, and I loved that it came with toasted slider buns. It's amazing how dramatically bread quality improves with a toaster. I ended up leaving a few bites on the table, but only because I was stuffed to the gills. Initially we considered getting a mac and cheese side, but were told by the guy at the counter that it would involve a wait time of an additional 10 or 15 minutes (appreciate the disclaimer). The sides we ended up getting were fantastic in its absence. The Tots had a great Cajun seasoning to them and for something that's pretty much unapologetic freezer food, tasted as close to homemade as you can get. Perfectly cooked. The cornbread was amongst the best I've had. There was some jalapeno in there to give it a bit of a nip, and it was crunchier, on the fried side, which I thought really helped the texture. Cornbread for me tends to be super dry and crumbly, but this was anything but that. Absolutely delicious. I'm used to NYC metro area prices, so perhaps I'm grading on a bit of curve, but for the type of food I thought the cost was super reasonable. Brisket entrees around there could easily be $10 more (this was about $17 or $18). Also, this was understandably more casual/not relying on consistent wait service, but everyone we interacted with was helpful and friendly. The only constructive feedback I have is that Satchmo's should provide wet naps on the tables as well. This type of food can get messy, and I had to use the restroom to rinse off my paws - pretty easy fix, in my opinion. Very strong recommend. This was the best Flagstaff restaurant I encountered during a two-day stay, and interestingly the only one not located in the Route 66 tourist area. read more

Found this mom and pop spot on our way to Williams for a day trip . Creole it was ! My boyfriend and I are avid foodies and well traveled, hence why we aren't easily impressed. This is a solid lunch option if you enjoy BBQ or cajun dishes. My wife, two sons, and I drove here in early April 2023 for a driving break between Page, AZ and Phoenix. I liked my pulled pork (but did not love it), and the sons devoured the brisket and tater tots. Not quite sure why it was good but not great - perhaps it was an off-day for the kitchen. In any event, we enjoyed the casual informal vibe of the place. I noticed a faculty member from Northern Arizona University enjoying lunch at a nearby table while working on a laptop. From the parking lot as you exit onto the main street, you can see a quick view of the San Francisco peaks (with snow). In general, downtown Flagstaff seemed like it has seen better days (a few motels were abandoned) on the main drive from Page, AZ. But Satchmo's is definitely a bright spot in town! read more

We were passing through Flagstaff on our way to Chicago in the early evening and we were getting the hungries. After searching the map for a while we decided to try Sachmo's Cajun and BBQ. Pulling up outside we found the one illuminated storefront in a line of shops. Stepping inside we found welcoming staff and a tantalizing list of tempting options on the Satchmo's menu. We decided to order a Fried Catfish Poboy, a Sliced Chicken Poboy, Coleslaw, and Red Beans and Rice. The poboys were tremendous! The fried catfish poboy had a generous amount of fried catfish on a fresh bun accompanied by coleslaw, tomato, and Cajun remy sauce. The combination of flavors in this generous sandwich was tantalizing and delicious! The chicken sandwich included sliced BBQ chicken combined with coleslaw, tomato, and the Cajun remy sauce. Luscious flavor in this wonderful sandwich! The coleslaw had a spirited vinegar taste accented with mild peppery thin slices of jalapeño. So good! The red beans and rice included slow simmered red beans with house blend seasoning blanketing perfectly cooked white rice. So sumptuous! We loved our first visit to Satchmo's! I so wanted to enjoy Satchmos having heard so many rave reviews. Maybe I just ordered the wrong item...catfish bites. I had read that some say catfish has a mild, sweet flavor and firm texture. Others say that catfish can have a muddy flavor. Also, the taste of catfish can vary depending on the type of catfish. My catfish? Mushy and no taste at all. Service wise, I had placed an online order and during pick up, asked if the sauce was in the container, was assured it was. Glad I double checked when I got to the car ...no sauce. We were very excited to try this Texas style BBQ restaurant while visiting Flagstaff but we were sorely disappointed. (1) No option to request flat vs point. I was told that's just the way we do it here and that they pull some of each when serving. The entire pound of brisket was all the flat/lean and was definitely wasn't just sliced/had been sitting in their ovens to serve. (2) The brisket tasted like and had a texture that was similar to a sous vide and then put on the smoker for a bit vs a long visit to the smoker. (3) Very little smoke flavor and the seasoning wasn't anything close to typical TX BBQ. Was very bland. (4) The Andouille sausage was also very bland on flavor and seemed to just be grilled and split in half. The owners could benefit from a visit to Franklin or Goldie's BBQ, to have more perspective of the flavors, service, options and experience. read more

We were looking for something new in Flagstaff, a tasty takeout dinner we hadn't already tried. Having discovered Satchmo's on Yelp, I headed there and was greeted by a friendly, helpful young lady. I enjoyed a freshly-squeezed glass of lemonade for my short wait. Not able to choose just a few menu items, we had decided to order a selection. Hubby's Shrimp Po Boy sandwich was topped with a tasty slaw on a just-right bun. My King Fish Platter featured a light cornmeal crust on tender white fish, served over spicy dirty rice. Additionally, we had awesome Mac and cheese, gumbo, red beans and rice, potato salad, and tasty seasoned Tator Tots. Everything was well-seasoned and delicious. Bread pudding for dessert had a slight hint of apple and the crispy crust was perfect. Lots of food would make for delicious leftovers. I really wish I had a picture to share, but I didn't bring my phone in with me. I ordered the half pound brisket and a side of spicy coleslaw and a drink. It was $34 and some odd change. The meat came with four slider buns and some pickles so I made four sliders out of it and alternated layeres of their spicy and their sweet sauces in between each layer of meat and put a pickle on each sandwich then I added the spicy coleslaw on top of them as well and I ate two of the sliders and about a third of the coleslaw basically saving 1/2 for later in the evening so I got two meals out of it. It was outstanding mouthwatering brisket and I will return. I will also add that my friend got the Cajun blackened fish and I am not a real big fan of most fish, but this fish was outstanding and I will get that the next time I'm in town and I go back because I will be BACK !!!! read more

We were greeted immediately and placed our order at the counter. We got our drinks and waited for our food. The brisket was among the best I've ever had and is served plain. You can add either the spicy or the sweet BBQ sauce (but you don't need to). Both sauces are good. The gumbo was very good. However, the Macaroni and Cheese was the best I've ever had (and I now live in a part of the country where they are particularly and rightfully proud of their Mac N'cheese. Stopped in just for gumbo--it's not a huge portion, but it was enough for a late lunch sort of meal. The good: the shrimp were cooked perfectly with a great texture, and the gumbo was seasoned appropriately with just the right spice level. Definitely hit the spot. The less good: the roux was too light, and the rice being on the bottom rather than the top made it kinda soggy. Really the lightness of the roux is what makes this 4* rather than 5*--it's just missing a certain depth and edge that's central to all the (many) gumbos I've had in New Orleans. read more

The slaw is killer and the smoked beans have so much flavor. June 22, 2022. Wednesday. My wife and I stopped here for "linner" on the way back from Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Upon entering, the line had three people waiting and a side line had a robust take-out business. This restaurant is named after the late, great Louis Armstrong, a trumpeter and vocalist born in New Orleans in 1901. I enjoyed the decor of Jazz and Blues musician paintings on the inside of the restaurant. My wife ordered the Gumbo, andouille sausage, shrimp, rice and Trinity ($8.99). I had the large fried catfish bites in buttermilk and cornmeal batter with tater tots and remoulade sauce ($16.99). We also ordered the 10" round of mac n' cheese topped with crushed tater tots ($12.99). It took about twenty minutes for our food to come out. I will admit they cook a mean tater tot here. Perfectly brown, crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful potato on the inside. The baked mac n' cheese topped with crumpled tater tots had a bacon taste to it that elevated it way above traditional macaroni and cheese. Unfortunately, my catfish bites were small and extremely dry. They had too much breading and were very dense. I wish this main entree had been better because I love some fried catfish. Maybe bigger fillets and less breading would help keep the fish moist? We paid a total of $38.97 for some small, dry catfish bites and pretty good side dishes. This food is very dense and filling so you might consider ordering a bit less than you normally would. That's why they offer small entrees. read more
