Friendly staff, fun New Orleans style art and music, and a taste of New Orleans cuisine. My girlfriend and I were looking for a quick light dinner, and it filled the bill. She had the chicken thigh po boy and I had a bowl of gumbo. Pro: Great slaw (sweet with heat) Con: They only serve the burnt end sandwich for lunch, and the BBQ portions were far too large for what we wanted. In my younger days I would have pounded down one of their BBQ specialties and topped it off with dessert, but as a senior I no longer eat like that. They definitely need senior-sized combos allowing smaller appetites to enjoy a little taste of everything. We both agreed this place would be great for catering a big event. read more

This place was very tasty! On top of that, brisket was nice and tender and the tots were perfectly crispy. We got brisket sliders, tater tots, mac n cheese, jambalaya & gumbo. When served, they provide regular BBQ sauce and Spicy BBQ sauce. Both were very delicious and paired very well with how they made their food. The gumbo and jambalaya were our least favorites, however they did not taste bad at all. Girlfriend and I recommend everything we ordered! We will be returning if we are in the area. read more

I tried Satchmo's in Flagstaff and ordered the beef brisket. The brisket was a bit dry for my taste, though the BBQ sauces were flavorful and helped bring some balance to the dish. The pricing felt a little high for what was served, especially considering the portion and quality. That said, the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, which made the experience more enjoyable. The staff here is amazing. I would just visit here for just the service! The food is really good too! The vibe is very mom and pop which we love and we were really glad to have found this place during our trip. We ordered a bunch of stuff to try and they were kind and accomodating to let us get half portions of things. The mac and cheese. Star. Get it. Brisket, good, not the best but still juicy and tender. We drove here after Bearizona and the Grand Canyon, and it was a great meal to finish the day! It's in an unassuming plaza next to a gas station, and you order food at the counter. The gumbo had that rich roux flavor, and you can sub jambalaya or dirty rice for $3.99 (our cashier recommended the jambalaya so that's what I did!). We also went with the ribs based off his recommendation, and they weren't kidding about fall off the bone! Sweet and spicy bbq sauce were available at the table, but it was delicious even without! The cornbread wasn't what we expected, but it turned out even better! More surface area for butter and a nice charred taste. We went here last weekend while in Flagstaff and got food to go. The inside is small and quaint, with some dine in tables that are separated from an ordering/pick up counter. There's some retail items for purchase such as seasoning too, nice presentation! I love the menu options, as I didn't expect to find Cajun in Flagstaff lol. Anyway upon getting our order, we were a bit dismayed at just how small the "small" sides were.. looking in the bag, I was certain they forgot something. We thought the small sides should be labeled down, such as "teeny" . Anyway, once we started eating, we found the portion was big enough as we were stuffed! My husband got the jambalaya with a small side of mac & cheese. I got the red beans and rice side with a side of the SW coleslaw. The red beans and rice and jambalaya were fire! The macaroni was different.. but good. I think it was one of the cheese in there that's distinct but I couldn't put my finger on what kind of cheese it was. The coleslaw I was not a fan of. We've been here twice and I think my reviews from the first time would be much better than the second. The first time we had blackened swai, catfish bites, and tots. We sat outside and the meal was quite tasty. The second time around we sat inside and folks in my party had brisket and pulled pork and gumbo. It was loud and the food was not as delicious. I was pretty hyped to try this place out. The signs on the window indicate they've won best of this and best of that, even the locals over at Ski Haus gave it high marks. I stopped in for a meal at about 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday. I'm a big fan of brisket, but not of carbs so I had the brisket sandwich without the bun and upgraded with the andouille sausage, tots were included. The server was super nice chatted me up, sold me a couple of stickers, and gave me a place card for the table. Brought the food out after a reasonable wait. I could tell right away I wasn't going to be impressed. I could see that the tots were overdone. But sampled a couple just to get the flavor which wasn't bad. It may be because the brisket has been sliced for sandwiches, but it wasn't impressive at all, a little dry, so I resorted to the sauces on the table to attempt to rescue it. Flavor was OK but with a name like Satchmo's you expect to be impressed. Server asked a little while later how was everything? I responded that it does not live up to the hype. I think that shocked him. I gave him a quick rundown of my feelings about the meal, and he said he would let the the kitchen know. Nobody followed up with me by the time I finished up and left. This is a little diamond in the rough restaurant! The location is a whole in the wall in an old strip right behind a gas station,so if you are going fancy this isn't the place. The inside of the restaurant has a cute, warm, Louisiana, jazz atmosphere. Now for the food...Everything we had was fantastic! Just the right amount of heat and they are very clear on their menu what's hot and what's not. Their cornbread was very good and each piece came with its own packet of butter.. Not too sweet, which makes it great to eat with the spicy and flavored meals. The Mac N Cheese was phenomenal! It's a tiny place and you order at the front before you get your seats, so prepare for the possibility of not getting a table right away if it's busy. It is a small little place in a strip mall but it serves delicious food. One person ordered a Po boy and I ordered the King's fish plate. We were very happy with our selections and the quality of the food. I think the portion sizes and the price are slightly out of proportion given each was like $19. Satchmo's has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Flagstaff. When I lived there over a decade ago, my friends and I would often go to Satchmos after a long day at snowball or for a quick dinner with friends or family when they were in town. Satchmo's does have one of my favorite sandwiches, which is the shrimp Poboy! I still think about that sandwich all the time now that I don't live there. Was looking for good Cajun style food, stopped by here. There's parking in front, but the space is close to a gas station. I parked around back and walked around. You order first before sitting, I ordered the blackened catfish on rice, and a large cornbread (6 pieces), and fountain drink. A medium cornbread is 3 pieces. I inhaled the blackened fish on rice, it was really good, and I forgot it was spicy so it hit me! It was an enjoyable amount of spicy! The cornbread isn't spicy at all, and they give you plenty of butter and honey. Their sweet tea was also really good! It was nice and quiet here, quite a few to-go orders. I was a little disappointed about how little of rice I got on the order. And the rice was sticking to the brown paper underneath it. But other than that, this place was really good! This is located at the end of a strip mall with a very cute and dog friendly patio. Mostly shaded. We arrived around 530pm and was able to get an outside table. Wow, I honestly cannot believe the reviews for this place. If this is the best BBQ Flagstaff has to offer than Im hesistant to try any other BBQ places here. Food was very overpriced and bland. And to top it off, they charge a "service charge" on top of their already overpriced food. We got the pulled pork that came with zero sides. Literally just meat and 4 small buns. I would say this meat was average. Nothing special. We also got the jambalaya which was incredibly underwhelming. Tasted like the boxed seasoning you buy in the grocery store. We also got the mac and cheese which was also very underwhelming. Overall bad experience food wise. Would not recommend or return. Only positive I would say is the workers were very nice and the decor was decent. read more

The concept here is order at the front counter, pay , they give you a number and find you wherever you're seated. We chose burnt ends and catfish nuggets that came with tater tots The burnt ends came with a few rolls. They were ok. Really fatty; not much meat and the price was a little high for such a small amount of meat. The bbq sauces were the winner!! Both sweet and spicy had my mouth watering. The catfish nuggets were well seasoned; moist on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Which came with tater tots. Heavily dusted with seasoning. A bit much for my palate. Food is great. I've been a couple of times, and everything has been very good. I've tried the ribs and the pulled pork, both were excellent. Perfectly cooked and great flavor. For me, the spicy sauce was just okay (not actually spicy and didn't love the flavor), but the sweet sauce was very good. The meat has such great flavor, didn't really need any sauce. The Pitmaster's Smoked Beans were amazing, great flavor. The Tater Tot Basket was very good, but pretty greasy. The Cornbread Basket was just okay, very greasy and flavor was not great; will not get the cornbread again. Staff is SUPER friendly. Like, SUPER DUPER friendly. We sought this place out on our recent trip to Sedona/Flagstaff because someone in our group was fixated on getting a poboy sandwich. The reviews for this place were encouraging so we made the slow drive across town to check it out. Admittedly, as we pulled up we were a bit put off by the location. Satchmo's is located in a tired old strip mall with businesses such as massage parlors and smoke shops. Though they had big windows, these are now rendered completely opaque by their window treatments and there's no way to look inside without stepping through the door. Once inside, it's a different atmosphere. Sure, there is still a worn-out appearance, with diner style tables and chairs and a scuffed-up hardwood floor. But the general vibe was upbeat and the service was excellent. I asked for recommendations from the very cheerful young woman behind the counter, and she suggested several of her favorites while also cautioning us about the size of some of the meals. In the end we feasted on the following: Tot basket - TBH these are really just Ore-Ida style tater tots but flavored with Cajun seasoning. I've had similar variations in the past, so this wasn't anything really special. These are a bit on the salty side. Blackened shrimp poboy - pretty good flavor, maybe just a little overseasoned however. Shrimp were big and juicy and properly cooked. Regular shrimp poboy - IMO the better choice of the two. Again, the shrimp was done well and the flavors were more clean. Blackened fish filet over dirty rice - I was soooo craving the pulled pork but I can actually make this pretty well on my own so it never makes sense to pay for it. I forget what kind of fish this was (it wasn't the catfish). Overall a really good dish but with the seasoning and the remoulade, the flavor of the fish does get a bit masked. Prices were about what's expected these days - inflation has really driven up the cost of eating out. As mentioned above, the staff was great. Very good experience overall. read more

My husband I had lunch here once with friends. I thought my brisket was too fatty, but it tasted good. We also shared gooey ribs, beans, and rice. The food selection at lunch was limited the Saturday we visited. On weekends I think the restaurant wants to focus on takeout. We sat indoors. Our dirty plates remained on the table long after we finished eating. Perhaps you are supposed bus your own table. There is a nice outdoor seating area decorated with pretty plants. I really wanted to like this place more than I did but the food underdelivered in flavor and quality. Service: was actually amazing and super hospitable so I have nothing to complain about that. Food: Portions were also pretty generous (as you can see the mac was HUGE) and presentation was nice, but the flavor was pretty mid, brisket tasted exactly how it looked in the pic, DRY. Mac was also unfortunately pretty dry as well, but had good flavor. It came in a shallow dish so maybe if it were baked for a little less time it would've been fine. Gumbo had great texture but didn't have enough salt so you couldn't taste much of anything. What we really did enjoy were the catfish nuggets, they were light, crispy, and well seasoned, the dipping sauce that came with it was great and it came with a hefty portion of tater tots on the side. Ambiance: Cozy, family friendly restaurant with limited seating, seems like this place attracts a lot of tourists. Bustling and vibrant atmosphere but not too loud to where you can't hear yourself talk. I really liked their lighting decor, super cute. Maybe we came in on an off day, but I did have high expectations after seeing a bunch of internet suggestions for Satchmo's being one of the best food spots when visiting Flagstaff. read more

I was fooled by the reviews. The food was absolutely terrible. We didn't even finish eating our meal. The "pulled pork" sandwich came out with two large chunks of meat. I think someone forgot what the pulled part is supposed to mean. I had the "Kings Gumbo" so I could try both the gumbo and the jambalaya. I felt like I was eating watered down Zatarans from a box. We also ordered the dirty rice so we could try it and it was burnt. There were small chunks of black whoknowswhatitwas. The staff was friendly enough to, but to call this place Cajun is an insult to Cajun people and their food. Stay away. read more
