    Shrimp skewers
    Renee I.

When we pulled up to this place we got worried that we would be walking into the student union since it is on campus. But lots of nonstudent people were there too. The menu had a nice variety of items to choose from. I got the shrimp skewers which were served with lots of fresh veggies and crispy red potatoes. It was all very good but esp those potatoes. The cocktail specials looked awesome but I didn't indulge because we had another event to attend. The service was good but not great. It's a nice place and I would not hesitate to return.

What an absolutely excellent place to dine at, the interior vibe was super chill with some nice jazz music playing. It was not crowded at all on a weekday during lunch. We got the pasta Diavolo and the 1899 burger along with two desserts the crème brûlée, and the bread pudding. Everything was extremely delicious and Service was super friendly and quick. I would come back here again in a heartbeat for the amazing food great service and chill vibe.

The food was excellent -- thank you to the kitchen team. Everything we ordered was delicious and well prepared. We had the deviled eggs, artichoke flowers, steak sandwich, and grilled cheese, and each plate was nicely executed. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the quality of the food. We were seated quickly on a Friday night, which was great, but our server was inattentive the entire time. She brought our drinks and appetizers and then disappeared. We found ourselves waiting while she handled other tasks. When she came by to clear a plate, we had to stop her to ask if we could finally order our entrées -- and also ask for straws. Toward the end of the meal, she dropped the check without saying a word. We had planned to order a few more things to go, but at that point we just decided to pay and leave. It was a strange experience overall -- amazing food, but service that made the night feel awkward and a bit rushed.

Left 3 because the place is clean, ambiance is good, service is good but the food is not worth coming back. We ordered nachos and pork flatbread. Nachos was horrible, I would not recommend ordering it. It's like my 11 year old grandkid made it. Pork flatbread was ok. The steak which is market price was not to our liking but instead our guests don't want to complain about it, fish tacos was the worst tacos, 0 flavor, bland, small and saggy. We all left questioning ourselves. Would you ever come back? We all said N

Drinks were great and the staff was fantastic. Beautiful place to chill for the afternoon. Even bought the hat! We did want to try the bread pudding and the crème brûlée but they were out. Overall wonderful!

Our group of 18 women made a reservation and ate at 1899 today. The restaurant is beautiful, and only a couple of tables were in use. We were seated and given half enough menus. The menu caused some confusion because it says sandwiches come with fries or a side, but all of the sides have an additional charge. After some time the waiter took drink orders which were filled in a reasonable time. Then she took our meal orders. Two of us ordered appetizers which were served quickly. But the rest of the meal didn't come out for an hour! We had a combination of burgers, sandwiches, and salads, nothing complicated. It was only after we complained to our server that she and the manager delivered food to our table. The food was arranged beautifully on the plates and looked and tasted appetizing. One person was dissatisfied with her soup which the restaurant refunded. Then, even after we asked for our checks, it was 15 or 20 minutes before she brought them out, and another 10 or 15 minutes for her to process them. It's sad to say, but we will not be visiting this restaurant again.

Food was a work of art. Service was immaculate. I downed that cherry limeade like I was dehydrated (I wasn't). That Mac n cheese made me think I was going to heaven it was so blissful.

My husband and I spent our anniversary dinner here and we were so happy we did. The food was fabulous. The artichoke hearts were our favorite! The service was top tier. Our waitress, was so nice and helpful! Loved the history you could feel in the building. Definitely will be back!

We were up at NAU for an EV Ride and Drive and someone suggested this place when we were done. Have to be honest that when we got there and looked from outside I thought we were going to a college cafeteria. Not, could we have not been more wrong. First the place is really well appointed inside and had classic but modern aesthetics. Very impressive. Yet it was completely empty (school was out already) so was concerning again. Staff was very friendly and service was efficient for our small to medium group showing up unannounced. Now we get to the food. Wow. Just wow. Incredibly impressed by the food. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food. From appetizers to entrees everything has great flavors and memorable taste. The food is highly chef driven at incredibly reasonable prices for these days. My wife had the portobello stroganoff and it was maybe the best stroganoff I've ever tasted. Incredible flavor profiles. My wife rarely cleans her plate and she ate every bite. I had The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. The chicken breading was fried perfectly with a light yet significant crust. The chicken was especially moist. They served it on a French Artisan roll (very similar to ciabatta roll) that stayed perfectly firm without getting soggy during the entire meal. It held up very well. My only wish was that there was a side of honey as I think this is a must for a Nashville hot chicken. The fries were also done well and clearly fresh cut. We also tried the queso fundido. An appetizer I generally enjoy. Maybe one of the best ones I've ever had. We will definitely be coming back when I'm in flagstaff. Might even drive up just to come back. It's that good.

We went to the 1899 bar and grill on Saturday 1/17/26. The interior looked clean and well kept, and we were greeted immediately. Our server's name was Trinity, and she was the sweetest! So knowledgeable about the menu and was more than happy to answer our questions with a smile and great attitude. Her service was amazing. We tried drinks, the crème brûlée for dessert and several dinner dishes. I had the French dip special which was very good! My husband enjoyed his ribeye. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and food for the prices!

Top Sirloin and a side of Mac & Cheese

Food was delicious, the sirloin comes with a side of absolutely amazing vegetables that pair well with the potatoes. Everything was cooked very well and the service was fast and polite. Our server Meg was especially efficient and seemed super nice. We came on their jazz night and it was incredible. Very nice atmosphere.

The restaurant itself was clean and had a stylish modern-meets-vintage vibe that made the atmosphere feel both cozy and upscale. Their cocktail menu was especially unique. I ordered the Vendetta Ride, and it was easily one of my favorite drinks of the night: light, slightly sweet, and finished with just the right kick. I absolutely loved it. The menu features creative contemporary American cuisine with an emphasis on sharing plates, which made the experience even more fun. We ordered two appetizers, two mains, and a dessert, and overall everything was excellent. My only critique would be the Duck Taquitos. The duck flavor was not there, and the mesquite mole sauce leaned too sweet for my taste. Aside from that, every dish impressed us. Overall, it was a fantastic meal and a great dining experience. I would highly recommend this spot if you're in Flagstaff!

I've spent years seeking out restaurants worth traveling for. I don't just eat to eat--I plan…read moreentire trips around food. Hospitality matters to me just as much as what's on the plate because great restaurants don't just serve meals; they create memories. Unfortunately, Shift became one I'll never forget for the wrong reasons. Our day couldn't have been further from what the staff assumed. We spent the morning hiking, went back to rest, explored a local bookstore, grabbed ice cream, and walked to our dinner reservation. Not one alcoholic drink had been consumed by anyone in our group the entire day. Not one. We also had a child with us. The only conversation we had with the host before being seated was asking whether it was okay that we had arrived about twenty minutes early for our reservation. We were polite, excited, and looking forward to dinner. Then my husband ordered a beer. The waitress immediately refused because she claimed the hostess believed my husbands speech and mannerisms meant he was intoxicated. Read that again. A guest who had consumed zero alcohol all day was judged to be intoxicated. I understand the responsibility restaurants have. If someone is genuinely impaired, absolutely don't serve them. Every responsible restaurant should protect its guests and its liquor license. But there is an equally important responsibility that seems to have been forgotten: making sure your judgment is actually right before labeling someone. There was no bar crawl. No cocktails beforehand. No wine tasting. No brewery stop. No hidden drinks. There wasn't even one drink. We left feeling embarrassed, confused, and honestly caught off guard. Not because a beer was refused, but because a person was reduced to an assumption based solely on how they naturally presented themselves. Here's what makes the experience even harder to understand. After leaving Shift, we walked to Atria, where we remained for approximately two hours. We talked, enjoyed ourselves, and spent the evening there without issue. If someone in our party had truly been intoxicated wouldn't that have been obvious there as well? It wasn't. Food can be good. Cocktails can be creative. Service can be polished. None of that matters if hospitality disappears the moment someone doesn't fit your expectation of what a guest "should" look or sound like. Maybe perhaps because we weren't locals we seemed off ? To anyone considering Shift, especially if you're traveling with someone whose speech, mannerisms, or disability could be misunderstood, know that this was our experience. I hope the restaurant reflects on what happened and asks itself a difficult question: How many guests have we mistaken for being intoxicated when, in reality, they simply communicated differently? Because that's not just a missed beer. That's a missed opportunity to treat someone with dignity. I came to Flagstaff excited to discover one of its most " creative" restaurants. Instead, I left wondering how quickly a restaurant built on hospitality could make a guest feel so unwelcome. Simply , because my husband is a restaurant manager in Las Vegas, who has managed restaurants like Yellowtail, Herbs&Rye, Gjelina, and Edo we left out of respect for the industry. However, we should have got our deposit automatically refunded. Next time, take the time. Take the time to care. If a staff member is under this assumption, management intervene not to just follow said assumption and repeat what she said, but to hold an actual conversation with your guest, to evaluate , to observe, to understand. I promise you, that would change so many things for you.

I definitely wouldn't order the chicken again. The hubs had the Santa Maria tri tip. The meat was tough. Quite a few pieces too tough to even chew. Luckily, my meal was huge so he had that to fill up on. I saw the 32 oz cocktails and the former party girl in me immediately kicked in. I think my husband saw the look in my eyes. Maybe the aura around me and put a kabosh on it immediately. I ended up with a 16 oz, still large but that inner 22 years old was disappointed. 32 oz and you should be stumbling down San Fransisco. 16 oz should have at least brought a big 'ol grin. But alas, I couldn't even taste the alcohol. That inner party girl didn't let out that big 'ol grin. (That's ok. The tolerance of 22 year old me has faded through the years). Enough digression, would we come back? Yes, I think it's worth a second shot. We would, however, try something different.

A Masterclass in Modern American Fine Dining…read more My recent dinner at Atria in downtown Flagstaff was, quite simply, an exceptional experience from start to finish. Chef Rochelle Daniel has created a space that perfectly balances upscale elegance with a warm, inviting atmosphere, making it a true standout in the region. We started the evening with their incredible oyster selection. The oysters with the cucumber granita were a masterclass in refreshing, clean flavors--a perfect, bright start to the meal. We also indulged in the oysters with caviar beurre blanc, which provided a stunning, decadent contrast; the richness of the beurre blanc paired with the briny pop of caviar was unforgettable. Another standout from the starters was the foie gras cornets--delicate, playful, and incredibly rich, they were a brilliant opening note for the palate. The beet salad was another highlight. Far from a simple starter, the charcoal-roasted preparation brought out a beautiful depth and earthiness, elevated by the perfect balance of creamy textures and crunchy toppings. For the main, the duck entrée was flawless. The skin was perfectly rendered, and the meat was incredibly tender, showcasing the kitchen's technical prowess. To complement the meal, we enjoyed a bottle of Michael David Inkblot Cabernet Franc. It was a fantastic choice--bold and velvety with those classic notes of dark fruit and a hint of spice that held up beautifully against the richness of the duck and the earthiness of the beets. What truly elevated the presentation was the stunning pottery. Every dish was served on beautiful, locally crafted ceramic pieces that added a tactile, artisanal feel to the table. It's a thoughtful detail that grounds the high-end cuisine in the spirit of Northern Arizona. We finished the evening on a high note with a round of perfectly pulled espressos and the coconut macaroons. The macaroons were the ideal final bite--crispy on the outside, wonderfully chewy on the inside, and just the right amount of sweetness to round out the experience. From the thoughtful presentation of every plate to the impeccable, knowledgeable service, everything about the evening felt intentional and memorable. Atria is not just a meal; it is a culinary experience that showcases the very best of Northern Arizona's ingredients. It is a must-visit.
