This downtown Pub is one of our go to spots when visiting this fab historic town. Not only are their distinctive food options abound, but so do the great libations and selection of ales. The Southwestern selections like Sam's Special Posole chock full of delectable ingredients (lotsa hominy and green chile), but something you might just consider simple like the Southwestern Caesar Salad (fantastic) will grab onto even those who are not salad lovers, and the Navajo Tacos are great. Charley's was our old hangout place back in college and after. We like the new lighting. Back in the day. We would meet up with friends, play pool and enjoy the time there. Today it's still welcoming and Emily the bartender was friendly and had great customer service. The music tonight was fun and a good musician. Server was great, great downtown location but menu and food disappointing. Menu is totally different than what is on their website and online yelp. 30 years ago it was the best lunch and dinner spot in town, now it's not in the honorable mention or to be considered category. The hotel is clearly focused on their 3 bars and not the restaurant, and who can blame them with minimum wage in Flagstaff over $18 an hour, cost to park downtown, and even a historic tax added to your bill along with hotel, city, state and county tax. Not worth considering again when there are so many other choices. read more

Cool atmosphere. Extremely slow service to the point it was bad. Tables were never cleared. Water requests were never followed up on. It took 3 hours to eat there. Then they added the tip to the bill. Drinks took forever to arrive. Ordered french onion soup. Did not come hot. Ordered prime rib. It was not prime rib. The friendly hostess greeted, seated and served us water. After about 10 minutes, the server looked surprised to see she'd been sat. She was friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant wasn't so busy for a Saturday night. The decor was a vintage steak house. Would've liked to see more steak cut varieties. We'd go back for the great prime rib, different and delicious horseradish sauce, fresh salad, yummy housemade ranch, and crispy and hot french fries. The house Cabernet Sauvignon was balanced and complimented the prime rib. We'd try something different after the baguette was soft and undercooked for the Charly's Dip. Superb staff, Patrick was very welcoming and the pub, very inviting. I ordered the Hazelnut Cafe which had Matador black coffee, Frangelico hazelnut liqueur, Creme de cacao, fresh cinnamon whipped cream, and toasted hazelnuts and loved it! An excellent drink on a snowy day! My brother ordered the Hot Buttered Rum which had Sailor Jerry spiced rum, baking spice-infused butter, hot water, fresh whipped cream and candied orange and loved his as well. My husband and I had dinner here with a friend. We were not impressed. This restaurant is located on the first floor of the Weatherford Hotel. The summer hours posted on the Weatherford Hotel website are Wednesday-Sunday 11 am to 9 pm for the restaurant area and 11 am-11 pm for the main bar. We arrived on a Sunday a few minutes after 5:00 pm and no one was in the first floor Charly's formal dining room. Outside this dining room was a Charly's chalk signboard listing the dinner specials. We saw no customers and no employee to seat us or give us menus. After waiting 6 minutes without seeing anyone, we got tired of standing around the lobby outside Charly's dining room and went into the hotel's bar. The bar has a lot of tables. The bartender handed us menus for Charly's. I ordered a Navajo Taco. It was poor quality compared to the Navajo tacos I have previously eaten at the State Fair in Phoenix or Jitters Lunchbox in Flagstaff. I ordered a beer. Once I said I didn't want another one, the server did not come to our table again for a long time. We eventually somehow ordered the chocolate torte for dessert, and the bar tender delivered it. The torte was decent. When I wanted more water, I had to go up to the bar and ask for water. No server was checking in at our table. The bar is a nicely decorated place. We had a table by the window, and the window was completely open. There was a pretty tree outside. I enjoyed the view. The food and service was average at best. On our way out of the hotel, we saw several couples sitting at white-tableclothed tables in the formal Charly's dining room. They probably got better service than we did. The menu was probably the same. This room is nicely decorated. The restaurant has 5 outdoor tables protected by an overhang. Several days earlier an employee told me the patio was dog friendly and provides dog treats. read more

Came across Charly's on a Friday summer night in Flag, didn't seem terribly packed so my wife and I decided to try dinner here. Sat outside, where it was fun to people watch. Our young waiter was friendly and helpful. I ordered the prime rib, my wife had some type of chicken sandwich. I've had some great prime rib, and some not so great prime rib. This was probably below average. Kind of dry, not terribly warm or fresh. Seemed like it had been sitting for a bit? Baked potato that accompanied it was somewhat bland. My wife wasn't crazy about her chicken sandwich either. Location was great, upstairs Zane Grey bar was fun afterwards, nice patio seating... food won't have us in a hurry to come back though. read more

After walking downs long hill, we were hungry. Saw a Taco Place but they didn't have a real bar. So we came here to the Weatherford Hotel. First time ordering food but not the last. So good. I grew up in a Mexican restaurant, but I will come back here for the cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans any day. My other half had a Rueben which melted in my mouth after one taste. It's the butter on the bread. This is the place to try in Flagstaff. Their bartender, Sidney, needs to join Jon Taffer's staff. She is a lesson in bartending. read more

Bait and switch. Inquired about Happy Hour drinks. One of us asked if she should get the margarita or Strawberry Mojito. The bartender (who was serving) then suggested the "special" of the week Mojito. All 4 of us ate and asked our server for another happy hour round of drinks. Ends up our bill was inflated as these were not happy hour price. Our bill was $20 over what it should have been (for just the two of us) considering a 20% tip as well. We go to Charley's 4-5 times a month. We brought it up & were told..."nothing we can do about it". This was very disappointing. read more

If you want to listen to some great blues music, come out to Charly's on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. It is run By Rich Neville, and he has a perfectly wonderful drummer, Janet D. and then they have different guests each week. Then Afterwords at 9 pm Karaoke starts in the Gopher Hole~~~~so much fun~!! The service is amazing, and they are currently working with a new chef who is bringing in new menu items; so, if you have been here and thought oh, I had that food. Come back there are new things all the time and if you like French Onion soup it is the best in town here!!!! The staff like Chelsea, Lauren, Maddy, Patrick, and so many others really do provide service and a smile. Always willing to laugh with you and they remember your drinks- alcohol or not! Wandering around Flagstaff for a couple of hours and needed a place for dinner so we picked Charly's. Connected to a classic old hotel, this restaurant is decorated with some cool items on the wall, including some two people saws; we sat out on the narrow patio for dinner. I ordered a cup of the Black Bean soup and the vegetarian Navajo Taco. The soup was excellent with a smooth texture, a nice little hit of spicy heat and corn nibblets for crunch and sweetness. A really superb version that was possibly the best blackbean soup I have had. The Navajo Taco was a fresh made fried flat bread that covered the whole plate topped with beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese and a nice salsa that had a bit of sneaky heat. The flat bread was absolutely awesome, great crispy outside and soft fluffy inside, with a really nice flavor. The toppings were generous and nice, although nothing special. Based on the quality of the flatbread this is a must have dish, especially at only $5, just be hungry since the portion is huge. read more

After getting turned away from LaVetta for not having reservations down the street, we came to Charly's who did not require reservations & seated us immediately. It's been awhile, but I would still rate them at 5 stars, having good food that never lets you down. We had the Charly's Baked Dip, which was absolutely amazing! We ordered a mini & it was plenty for two people. For dinner we ordered the Traditional Cheese Enchiladas & Durango Tacos. They do a great job with Mexican options on their menu. Their Mexican rice is probably the best we've tasted. Charly's Pub is located in the Weatherford Hotel so it had a nice ambiance & a choice of indoor/outdoor seating. I hate giving this place 2 stars because they're so nice and attentive. But my stars is for the food only. We got diablo chicken tacos for our appetizer. The chicken had zero zero flavor. I got prime rib for my main entree and a meatball Spanish soup. The soup tasted like it came from a can/pre-made seasoning. My boyfriend said the meatballs shouldn't be called meatballs. My prime rib was actually decent and the only reason I gave this place 2 stars along with the nice service. My boyfriend ordered the grilled salmon. I've eaten quite a bit of salmon in my lifetime and I'm kinda a salmon snob. The salmon had a very fishy taste and tasted frozen or it went bad. I took another bite with the sauce and it made it a little better but I would NOT order it. We definitely wouldn't come back. :( read more

My two favorite things about Charly's are the Arizona memorabilia on the walls and the second floor balcony that offers great views of Flagstaff. The staff is pretty shitty. Charly's has several bars, one of them had a live band and cover charge, in order to go to a different bar we were told to talk to the hostess. There were three hostess in a deep conversation about boyfriends, it would be rude to interrupt them so we just stared at them until they were ready to help us, good times. My date had some friends in the downstairs bar so we met up with them. We sat there for a good ten minutes and not one employee walked through there so we went upstairs to grab a drink. The bartender up there was bitchy and gave us attitude for trying to use a card to pay for our drinks. We scrounged up the cash and I tipped her with quarters to which she rolled her eyes. I just smiled and said "sorry, we spent it all at the titty bar." Even though I had a one star experience I'm still giving it four because I've had great times at Charly's in the past. read more

They had plenty If open tables including along then sidewalk outside so I decided to dine here and asked for an outside table. I was seated promptly and given a glass of water. When I was seated, I was introduced to my server who said she would be back shortly. 22 minutes later, she returned. I ordered my drink and dinner. After a reasonable time, a runner came to deliver food to me which I expected to be my salad, however it was my entrée. I asked about my salad, he said he would look into it... He never returned. About 20 minutes later, my server reappeared and said she apologized about the salad. I continued to eat my entrée, expecting my salad to show up any minute. The bill was delivered. My server mentioned that it showed a salad at zero dollars, because the salad is actually "free "with the entrée. Even though she understood I never received it. I said, that seems silly to me, can you take a few dollars off, because I never received it? She said technically, it is free. And she would talk to her manager. Her manager came out and literally sat down at my table and said to me that he heard I had a question. I said that it seemed odd that they said a salad was "free "and could they just take a few dollars off since I never received it. He said that they could not. At this point I just wanted to leave so I paid the bill. My entree was the steak frites. The first chunk of steak I had was good, the rest were so salty They were nearly inedible. This combines with the (lack of) customer service...I'd recommend looking elsewhere for dining in a Flagstaff. read more

It began with being served a bottle of wine that was no longer drinkable as it had turned. After complaining to the waitress it took 20 min for the manager and a bit of discussion before he took that bottle off the bill.Food was good but took a very long time. The soups and salads were served at the same time as the entrees. When the bills came we had to send them back 3 times due to basic mistakes. Unfortunately, tonight the male "manager" on duty failed to honor the establishment's happy hour deal which was advertised on a chalkboard outside its front doors. He claimed that it was not valid and that despite the glaring neon sign outside labeled "Charly's Bar and Grill", the happy hour only applied to the bars therein-- which were named "the gopher hole" and "zane grey's bar". Great lunch! Outdoor patio with big umbrellas, great people watching location and charming atmosphere. The food may take a minute but well worth the wait. We had mozzarella frites which was like caprese with fried mozzarella bites, Navajo taco which was a delicious grilled chicken taco on amazing fry bread, mac and cheese which was creamy & turkey club which was huge & had applewood smoked bacon on sourdough bread. We stopped at the Flagstaff Visitor Center and inquired about a good place for breakfast and the lady recommended Charly's. It was just a short walk off of the main street. I was immediately impressed by the historic building. Let me begin by saying, old buildings fascinate me. Restored historic buildings are on the top of my list and the Weatherford Hotel is amazing. Back to Charly's......The outside seating was filled up so we went in and were seated, by a very nice young lady, in the center dining room. Our server, Ben, was very attentive and prompt. Our drinks came quickly as did our breakfast. We both ordered the $8.00 "traditional" breakfast of eggs and hash browns and toast. I got the additional $2.00 bacon. The eggs were done to order and the portions were more than adequate. The bacon was crisp as ordered. They had no white toast so we ordered the wheat toast. Slices were rather thick but good. Only problem was they were dry. No butter. Not sure if that was normal. Didn't ask, just loaded up on the jelly. Food was very good and Ben's service was excellent. The atmosphere in the old building was fantastic. After eating we wandered through the building taking photographs. That was the highlight of my whole experience. The people who restored this building did an extraordinary job. We will definitely go back again when we are in Flagstaff. read more

Decided to pop in for happy hour and watch the Thursday night football game. It's a very cute, old bar. It seemed like the people who were there were daily regulars and were definitely having a good time, which gave the small space good energy. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. I ordered a few of their $3 happy hour well vodka drinks (what a deal!), the spinach and artichoke dip (dip was ok, but the tortillas chips were very good and fresh). When I come back I will probably just come in for happy hour cocktails and the good vibes the place gives off. read more

Charly's wooed me with its period-true exterior in this fabulously old western hotel, then dumped me in the gutter like a wet cigar butt. The food was very expensive and disproportionately mediocre. In fact, it was below the Mendoza line.. I'd have to call it very poor. I suffered through a $10 Navajo taco the meat mixture was as bland as a 1950's cookbook, though the actual fry bread was good. My wife had a crushingly sub-par beef dip. Over cooked and dry, my wife took it and fed it to some grateful reservation dogs later in the day. The service was young and sprite but inefficient. The interior was OK, but done in the inglorious 1970's Victorian-re-do style. Much better choices in beautiful downtown Flagstaff. read more

So, we have tried this place a few times now and one thing simply hasn't changed. The bad service! Honestly, the food is pretty good and they have a decent selection of beers. But OMG, the device has always been lousy. Every server we have had has been forgetful, slow, or simply "no-good." It's such a shame because they have the perfect location and a great patio. However, I have been to the bars here plenty of times and I love it! It's right downtown on a busy corner street which makes for great people watching. I hung out in the bar downstairs a few times where we've had cheap drinks and some free tacos!! Yum! Can't go wrong with free tacos! Here, you can play pool or dance the night away! I mostly come here after bar hopping around and head to the upstairs bar. Sometimes it may have a band or even a wedding reception that is ending in the Zane Grey Ballroom. It is usually really busy, but the drinks are surprisingly cheap. They always have fresh popcorn and there is a huge patio outside to watch the city. What I love to go here for are the bars, particularly the upstairs bar. Very cool scene up there, whether you are inside where it is warm or out on the balcony checking out the heart of downtown Flagstaff. They always seem to have good drink specials, even after happy hour. I've seen people have their wedding reception in the Zane Grey Ballroom upstairs and thought it was a very cool idea. In the mood for dancing, live music, shooting pool, or eating free tacos on Friday night? Check out the bar downstairs. Great scene there too! One of my favorite things about this bar? They have a creeper shot (sneaky photo) of Edward Abbey drinking a beer in the bar from the early '90s, not too long before his death. Very cool. We weren't quite ready to head back to Camp Verde after dinner at nearby Monsoon, so based on a recommendation from our server at Monsoon, we stopped in at Charlie's for a nightcap. We took note that the host at Charley's told one party that there was a 45 minute wait for a dinner table. But anyway, we walked over to the bar section with a jukebox and pool table. I ordered a "hardcore cider". JP had an Alaska Amber Ale. I thought my cider was great (it didn't have that much of a kick though), however JP thought it was kinda sweet. Relaxed environs with speed and friendly table service. Wide variety of clientele. Damn, that one older guy over at the pool table. He sank all his solids before his partner could even take a whack at her stripes. read more
