Sarma has been on the food bucket list for the past 4.5 years and we finally made it! We were lucky to nab a reservation for 5:45pm a month in advance (many calendar reminders later...). The restaurant started out with a lot of empty reserved tables (though the bar was full with walk-ins from the beginning) that quickly filled up as the evening progressed. The ambience is lovely, the menu is a delight (I really appreciate the glossary on the side), and the service was great. We were recommended to order around 5 dishes for 2 people, and ended up getting 7. While it was a lot of food and we had to pack up about 1 dish's worth of food to-go, I don't regret trying a lot of items! I'll summarize my top picks from what we tried. Delicious, would definitely get again - The beef carpaccio ($23) was a delight. There were crunchy deep fried noodles, delicious sauces, fresh salad mix, all on top of tender beef. And, unexpectedly, a perfectly soft boiled egg/deep fried egg. When I showed this dish to my Turkish friend, he said "Oh yes, these are Turkish breakfast items." What an inventive and delicious way to reimagine breakfast as a carpaccio! - The garlic shrimp lamejun ($22) was so delicious! I think there may have been some spiced shrimp paste as the "meat" layer on the flatbread in addition to the tender grilled shrimp on top, and both were delicious. I loved all of the sauces, vegetables, and flavors here. Would definitely get again! - The black sea cornbread ($17) came highly recommended by our waitress and friends and it didn't disappoint! It has an almost rice-cake like glutinous texture with the perfect combination of feta, honey, and buttery flavors. It smells like heaven and it tastes so good. I will be trying to recreate this at home. Good, may get again - The fried mussels ($17) were quite good. My favorite part was actually the papaya salad on the side -- it was deliciously flavored, crunchy, and fresh. The mussels were tender and juicy inside of the breading, and interspersed with deep fried vegetables. The green curry tarator sauce didn't really stand out, though. - The brussels sprout bravas ($14) with chorizo ($2) had a really nice smoky paprika flavor but the sprouts themselves were not that special/got drowned in the sauce. I would've preferred crispier sprouts. - The sesame fried chicken with tahini sauce ($15 for 4 pieces) that comes out every so often from the kitchen was good, but didn't have strong flavors. The chicken was boneless and very tender, and the breading was crispy though a bit greasy. Wouldn't get again - The cheese saganaki grits ($16) were very interesting. I saw "okra gumbo" in the description and couldn't pass it up, but the gumbo component was minimal and drowned out by the cheese. I did like the grits, but I think there was too much cheese relative to the more tasty parts of the dish (grits, okra gumbo), and there was also a lot of acidic flavor from the tomatoes. Our waitress also kindly brought us some orange creamsicle ice cream and a candle for our anniversary. The ice cream tastes just like an orange creamsicle. We were too stuffed to try any desserts, but maybe next time we will plan our meal out better! I'd definitely love to return to Sarma to try more of their foods. I really appreciated how a lot of the dishes balanced out any heaviness with fresh salads (which were perfectly seasoned in their own rights). I was worried about having ordered too many rich/creamy things, but I needn't have worried! Everything was delicious, fresh, and distinct. The food also came out really quickly, so finishing within the 1 hour and 45 minute time limit is totally doable. Our total came out to around $165 including tax and tip, which was much less than we were expecting to pay (to be fair, we didn't get drinks or dessert), and we ended up stuffed with leftovers. Food was average at best. The whole place is very snobbish. We were a group of 8 and they refused to join the tables. My son didn't like his dish and they have a fritters on top of hummus, so we requested if they can give fritters separately than the hummus. They refused. No matter what policy restaurants have when a kid is looking for food and they don't accommodate, it gets irritating. So if you have kids don't go here. If you are big group don't go here. Started with wonderful service from Doug at the bar, who created an excellent drink and recommended both the drink and the app (MUST get the sugar snap peas!). Sat at the bar and had his other recommendation: Black Sea cornbread paired with the olive oil frozen yogurt. It is a bit expensive for something so casual, but the food is 100% worth it. The menu changes constantly, but here would be my recommendations: - Sesame Crusted Chicken is insanely crispy and pairs perfectly with the secret yogurt sauce. Flavors are super bold but so well balanced. - Hummus Kawarma is a super silky hummus with crispy pieces of lamb! They top it with toasted pine nuts and pomegranate seeds which makes the texture contrast of all the components an exciting adventure. - Green Papaya Fattoush: I would't classify this as a fattoush, but who cares?! It's AH-MAZING. Lemony, earthy, crunchy and fresh. - Octopus Al Pastor: I was confused by this one because the flavors are Mexican, not Mediterranean, but again, who cares! It's a huge, delicious, complex taco, and yes the octopus was well cooked. - Black Sea Cornbread is so simple but very well executed and has an addictive aspect to it! So I don't want to say it was a disappointment, but it didn't necessarily live up to a 9.7+/10 rating I assumed it would receive. The service lacked attention and it felt like they didn't value us as customers as much as they should for this price point and reputation. The food was all great, cornbread, brussels sprouts, snap peas, and duck I would say were the highlights. Just in general it could've been spectacular and fell short in every category to get there. The food at Sarma is some of the best food you'll get in all of the greater Boston area. Incredibly unique and well put together dishes that taste amazing. They do a great job with flavor combinations you would never think to try at home, but work so well. They have a glossary on their menu for words that aren't familiar to you. The quality of the food is truly top-notch. It's extremely hard to snag a reservation but once you do, you feel so welcomed at the restaurant. (4.5 stars) So happy that the green line extension makes it so easy to get to Sarma now! We loved their sister restaurant Oleana and had high expectations for Sarma, which I'd say were definitely met. This place won't disappoint you or any of the people you come here to dine with, as it has a wide variety of dishes to choose from even for vegetarians. But make your reservations early and be prepared to spend some $$$ :) We visited during the first week of January, and the waiter told us they had just revamped their menu so he wasn't able to give us many recommendations (besides old favorites which remained on the menu). No problem, it's just that it was hard deciding what to get since everything sounded so good! Their special of the night was the fried chicken, which came around every ~40 minutes and was offered directly all the diners separately from the menu - it did look very appetizing, although we didn't decide to order it. We ended up getting the Black Sea cornbread, pumpkin fritters, cauliflower, gyro bread and avocado muhummara. Our favorites were the avocado spread and the cauliflower; the pumpkin fritters were not as crisp and didn't have as much pomegranate as we expected. For drinks, we tried the Apolonia 6 and Closing Arguments, which took a while to come out (after our first dishes started arriving) but otherwise no complaints. I have been wanting to dine at Sarma for a decent amount of time so was excited when I was finally able to snag a reservation Squash fritters - 4/5 very solid Parsnip sarma - 3/5 interesting flavor profile. I enjoyed the sauce on this a lot but wouldn't reorder Artichoke fatteh - 3/5 although not my favorite flavor wise, the size of this dish was the most filling by far. Felt like a homey dish that hit a comfort vibe for me. Sweet potato skordalia - 5/5 the best dish we got. the crunch of the toppings, the fresh asian pear, and perfect whipped texture makes it a must order for me I do think the food was delicious however nothing particularly stood out to me to make Sarma a must try spot. Sarma is one of the most interesting and most delicious restaurants I've been to. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for a few minor points: 1. a few of their dishes are consistently way too salty and 2. I'm not a fan of restaurants that add extra to every bill-- in this case, 5% for kitchen gratuity. They certainly deserve it, but I don't get why they don't just factor that into their menu pricing or pay strategy. My experience with Sarma is that not all their dishes are worth it, but they're all worth a try, even at their prices. Personally, I think 3 dishes were enough for me (4, if you count my separate stomach for dessert). I came with a group of 4, got 12 dishes, and we were all shockingly full. I have yet to actually get any of their more entree-like dishes. I've come here a couple times with different groups of people. Two of my family said there was too much cheese, which I hadn't noticed. If you don't like cheese/dairy, it could be a little tough because it sneaks its way into dishes, but I love cheese and didn't notice. On both visits, I left the restaurant feeling stuffed. Luckily, due to my fear of driving/parking anywhere in Boston, I normally walk the mile to a T stop and use that as a little postprandial exercise. -- My notes on dishes I've tried across visits (Prices reflective of early 2022, possibly different menu): Black sea cornbread ($15) - Pro tip: save this to eat with their lemon yogurt and it's like the best olive oil cake alternative you've never had. Potato wedges ($14): Hard to mess up potato wedges, but these are spiced to the next level and made even better. Cauliflower fatteh ($16): This was one of my favorite dishes...when it wasn't trying to extract all the moisture from my mouth from the saltiness. Sarma beef jerky ($9): So soft and delicious, easy to eat. Avocado muhummara ($15-$16): This would've been so good except it also ended up really salty, especially as you got more towards the bottom of the dish. Lamb manti ($25-$26): Deceptively small portion that can be filling for one person. One of my favorite dishes; it's so savory and flavorful without being salty. Sausage spanokpita ($17): Too spicy for me, but would've been great if I liked spicy. Squash blossom tiropites ($17): Cheesier than I expected, not sure it worked really well with the flake puffy pastry type wrapping. Zuchinni tempura fries ($14): Such a unique mix of flavors, really good, but also too salty. Fried chicken ($?): They walk around offering this. It was pretty good. Blackened shrimp ($25): I've never been a fan of watermelon mixed into anything, so this dish was just fine. Kind of forgettable, definitely not worth it. Lamb kofte sliders ($17): Honestly forgettable, not worth it. Pork belly biscuits ($15): Also honestly forgettable, not worth it. Portions a little small, even for Sarma. Armenian cheesesteak ($17): Also forgettable, definitely not worth it. It was a perfectly fine cheesesteak. Loukamades: Perfectly fried little donut balls. I can't eat loukamades without some sort of icy dessert, but I was too full. This would probably be even better with their lemon yogurt. read more

Still scratching my head on the pricing of the carbonara...was way overpriced for the size. At $26 was almost double the price of other small plates and the serving should be easily double its size for that price. What a find! A little out of the way if you are in downtown but worth it. We have been to a lot of Mediterranean restaurants but this is one with a twist we weren't expecting. First, we couldn't get a reservation and I was hesitant to go without one. They told me that have a bar area that they don't reserve so if i was willing to sit there the wait shouldn't be long on a Monday. We tried and were seated right away. I don't know if the servers actually share tables but we felt very well attended to. They don't rush the order or require everything at once. In addition to the menu they were walking around with some additional items including amazing fried chicken (you read right). We had Avocado Muhummara which was a spread, Nachos (not your typical Mexican either), sliders, bbq duck and more. We figured out pretty quickly that they LOVE sesame seeds (not everything can be made without it but there was plenty for my husband to eat) and their kick. I can't call the food spicy as I don't like spicy food but it all had a pleasant kick to it. Probably my 6/7th visit to Sarma and I must say the food was excellent tonight. The calamari tempura, while visually it looks boring it is actually flavor bomb - the batter was a perfectly thin and crunchy consistency and those calamari was some of the softest and juiciest one I've tried. There was sauce on the bottom that was a red based slightly sour sauce which lifts up the whole dish. Sweet potato ceviche was unique and sour, my partner loved this dish. And as always my favorite and if you do come to Sarma and they have this on rotation as a special - get it! The sesame fried chicken is some of the juiciest fried chicken laid of a bed of tzatziki sauce. Divine! read more

On Nov. 11th, my friend and I had drinks and dinner at Sarma. It was a beautiful evening with amazing food and service, so we left the place very satisfied. The next morning, however, I reviewed my receipt from the restaurant and noticed unusual charges: $4 for each sauce on the side and a double charge for one cocktail. I called the restaurant to resolve this issue but got no response. I also emailed the management, but never got an acknowledgment. Have been twice this summer. Once we did the stand in line and hope to get in --- and we did! Second time I made a reservation the moment the reservations opened for the date we wanted. This is a tough ticket! The atmosphere is "neighborhood place". Really nice vibe and a great place for a table with friends. Sharables ARE the menu and they are nicely priced and reasonably sized. Good value. Wine list is not expansive but it is not super expensive, either. The food. Here's where I have a dilemma. Items that are at the top of the menu have been amazing, like really amazing - hummus, bread, corn bread and tuna tacos. I also loved the garlicky greens, the first time. The restaurant, or one of the cooks, has a salt problem. Some dishes come out waaay too salty. Sort of uneatable. This happened with both visits only the foods that were salty were different each time. For dessert, the crème brûlée was the winner. French Press coffee was a nice treat! We tried so many dishes, but the nachos stand out, as something I think of weeks later. The roasted pepper dip and cornbread come in second and third, although I'm not sure which is which. Made to Stray - rum cocktail Beets by Perry - Mandarin Vodka w beets The yummy apps: Avocado pistachio crisp Hummus caprese Octopus Nicoise Delicious entrees: Harissa BBQ duck Fattoush (wifey had it like an entree :P) We were staying at a nearby AirBNB and were overjoyed to find a DOPE joint within walking distance. Our attempt to walk-in the first night was stymied by lack of a rezzie and a ZILLION people at the bar. We wised up on the 2nd night and camped outside the doors prior to opening. We got the perfect corner seat at the bar. Lots of attention and good view of ALL the action. The service is amazing as expected at a hip joint. Ver friendly local bartender who gave us the lowdown of growing up in this hood (he could actually see the restaurant from his childhood bedroom!). read more

This place came highly recommended and over exceeded our expectations. I love that they're doing the tasting menu during COVID because it would be impossible not to order their whole menu! We didn't think 10 dishes plus dessert was enough but boy were we getting full towards dish #7. We left feeling stuffed! However for those who may just have a bigger appetite, they have a supplemental menu offering 3 other dishes. There was not a single dish that we did not thorough enjoy. I will say if you're a fan of corn bread, definitely get it at Sarma! Best ever!! Cocktails were good but on the sweeter side. This place is totally underrated and I secretly want to keep it a secret for my selfishness. However, I couldn't stop raving about it to my friends and family afterwards. My first disappointment was that only 2 dishes can be ordered for 2 people (without drink) for $75 considering tip and 5% kitchen staff fee. We ordered 2 entree, salmon and halibut.
