After making a reservation months in advance, we finally sat down to our much anticipated dinner at Sarma. Often touted as one of the best restaurants in Boston, our expectations were very high. We eat out a lot and have been to many of the other highly acclaimed Boston restaurants, and I can honestly say they typically have lived up to the hype, I've written glowing reviews on my Beli account and have recommended them to friends. With Sarma, that was unfortunately not the case. My fiance has a peanut allergy and we are typically very careful to always research menus ahead of time to ensure we don't accidentally order anything with peanut. I must say, typically his allergy is always disclosed because in most restaurants these days servers will always ask if there are any allergies at the table. Besides being incredibly unhelpful and unwelcoming, the server also did not ask about allergies. Even if we were to try to disclose his allergy to her, she was always in a hurry to leave our table.
We ordered many things off of the menu, including the shrimp shawarma. Upon first bite of the shrimp shawarma dish, he knew there was peanut in there. He figured it was cross contamination, and his allergy is relatively mild compared to others, so he thought he would be okay. This was our second to last dish of the night, so we paid the bill and left in a hurry as he was not feeling well. He got sicker and sicker when we got home, eventually breaking into full body hives, entirely swelling up, including his airway which led to trouble breathing. With this severe of a reaction, there was no way this was just cross contamination. Upon discussing with the restaurant, we have since learned that there are in fact peanuts MEANT TO BE in the shrimp shawarma dish, this was not just an accident. The restaurant has agreed to reprint the menu to include peanut, defending themselves by saying "we can't include every ingredient in each dish or the menu would be a novel" (I'd argue out of all ingredients to include, peanut would be an important one).
Of course, some of the onus is on us. We should have disclosed the allergy, we were just so used to servers asking. The menu in TINY print at the bottom says to disclose any allergies to your server. In the dim lighting of the restaurant, this is illegible with how small the font is. However, on the Sarma menu, there was a dish listed to have peanut in it (the broccolini), so we took note not to order it. This would also lead to our assumption that if any other dish had peanut, that would be listed. In addition, this is a mediterranean/middle eastern restaurant, which customarily do not use peanuts frequently in their dishes. Shawarma is my fiance's favorite food, he's middle eastern himself, he's never had a shawarma with peanut in it in his life. Luckily, my fiance is a doctor, I'm in healthcare, we knew how to handle his allergy. However, we very easily could have had to go to the emergency room, and if his allergy were more severe (as many people with peanut allergies are), he could have died.
Suffice it to say, bad experience. In the interest of being fair to the restaurant, I do want to comment on the rest of the experience besides the glaring detractor of the peanut incident. The food was very hit or miss. The Black Sea Cornbread was excellent and one of the better dishes I've had in Boston. We also really enjoyed the Moroccan Street Carrots. The Tunisian tacos were yummy, but my fiance is Tunisian and he was confused what at all made them Tunisian so he felt a little offended. Other dishes were underwhelming and nothing to write home about, including the potatoes and carbonara. Service was poor from beginning to end. This is a small plates restaurant, where customarily I would expect parties are ordering many rounds of food. Our server never came around to ask if we wanted to put in more orders, we were always having to flag her down. She did not make recommendations on how many plates per person, we had to ask. She overall seemed very disinterested and disengaged, which is just not what I would expect from a restaurant holding this much acclaim.
TLDR: DISCLOSE YOUR ALLERGY EXPLICITLY AT THIS RESTAURANT. Or...just don't go. I am happy to recommend an extensive list of other Boston restauarnts we found more enjoyable and more considerate of allergies/dietary restrictions. read more
