After 2 weeks in Europe, we were craving some South Indian food. This restaurant definitely met the expectations. For a family of four on a Monday evening, they were able to accommodate us. There are 4 restaurants in that row, but Saravanaa bhavan had most people with almost all tables filled. I also saw a lot of local people getting food here. The ambiance is like a fast food style, but they provide table service. The staff is very friendly and communicates well in French, tamil, and English. You will feel you are in indian saravanaa bhavan here. We ordered Thali meals, Chana bhatura, Ghee dosa, cauliflower 65, onion tomato uthapam, veg parotta, and veg biryani My favorite was onion tomato uthapam. Nice consistency and tasted great. The least fav was veg biryani. The Chana curry tasted awesome. cauliflower 65 was perfect. The veg meals were perfect. They do provide refills for sides if needed on the meals. The location wasn't the best but after a week of traveling this was the Indian food we desperately needed. Huge portions and great service, would definitely go back if I'm in the area again. Having lived in Chennai and eaten in many locations of this chain in Chennai and having consumed Indian food at many locations in the world I can confidently say that this is probably one of the worst dining experiences ever. The restaurant was crowded and noisy and not in any positive way. I realize this is Paris and the space is a premium but even accounting for this the chaos and mess in this place is beggars belief. The way they were throwing around the plates and other utensils created a constant noise that was unsettling at best. The order taking and delivery was chaotic. In a few cases orders taken after us was delivered before ours. My son was delivered the wrong dosa, which he realized only after touching it. We pointed it out and the servers gave it to a different customer. I am unsure about food hygiene rules in Paris but in the US this would have been an infraction. The schezhuan and vegetable fried rice that we ordered had no flavor, although the dosa and idli/vada we ordered were decent. I am unsure how this restaurant survives!! read more

Right, so when you ask the servers if the food is spicy and they say no, don't believe them. You know what though, it's ok! I was on vacation, trying new food, sweating my face off from eating spicy Indian food, but it was still OK! I ordered the INDIAN THALI which was like a bowl of rice with 9 types of sauces, meats, something. I actually don't know. I saw the lady next to me eat it, so I thought ok. Why not!? From what I could eat, it was full of flavor, textures, and tastes that I would not normally have in my cultures food. I really enjoyed the food, but just not the ambiance. It honestly pains me to give an Indian vegetarian option such a low rating but my experience at this Saravanaa Bhavan location was less than stellar. I dropped by with my family at around 9 pm on a Sunday evening. As expected, it was crowded but our party of 7 was able to sit down within 10 min of arriving. First off, there was a really unpleasant smell within the restaurant. It did not inspire much confidence about the rest of our night there, but we decided to go ahead and order some food since it was so late. Now a few members of our party adhere to a semi-jain diet and do not eat any onion or garlic. Everything from the vada to the coconut chutney on the side had onion and garlic in it so I would stay away from this place if you're looking for any jain alternatives or options. Now in terms of the food itself, it was just ok. The gobi manchurian was strange to say the least and had a sour flavor that was a bit too intense, even for indo-chinese fusion. The dosas were all ok, not amazing, not awful. I had a serious issue with the fact that we were given dirty cutlery, 2 napkins for the table, not enough cups, etc. Service left much to be desired and the food was subpar to say the least. There was a great deal of organizational chaos and the restaurant itself was dirty overall. I am vegetarian and gluten free and after the limited food options after 10 days in Spain and France - I was really craving some nice and spicy indian grub. So I looked up the closest dosa place in Paris and that's how we landed up here. I have to say this about Saravana Bhavan - It doesn't matter if you are in New York or Paris or Dubai - the food tastes exactly the same and absolutely delicious! I ordered the masala dosa and actually preferred this one slightly more than how they make it in NYC since it was less greasy. I also ordered chana masala with rice and they made it slightly different here than how I have had it before. But it was quite delicious, slightly tangy (I think there was yogurt in the sauce?) and spicy! I would definitely recommend trying this place out when you are craving some nice, cheap indian food while in Paris! read more

1.25 stars Sadly, I have to say that this was one of the single worst meals I've had in Paris. And I was really looking forward to eating in a purely vegetarian Indian restaurant. I had the South India thali, which consisted of about 6 "different" offerings that had different consistencies but the exact same flavor. And, oh my, I was frightened of the "dessert". It was gelatinous and red and was apparently a house specialty. My mate, who will consume just about anything, refused to eat his meal. We both went home hungry and sad. Why the extra 1.25 stars? The place was super clean. The staff were really sweet. There was actual spice in the food. Well, let me start by saying that the 4 stars are if you go to this place for lunch on a weekday. The food is perfect, super delicious and fast and the service is good. But then for a weekend, I would give it 2 stars only. It is extremely crowded, very noisy and uncomfortably loud. The food is still good but the service is lousy and annoying. The neighborhood didnt seem very safe as well so I would recommend lunch. This place is so good that I went back for a second round the next time I returned to Paris. Granted, I ordered the basics (a masala dosa, idlis, and a delicious mango lassi), but it's by far the best and most authentic Indian food I've had in France. The sambar is especially tasty, and it reminds me of the spicy stuff you buy in piping hot plastic bags on the streets in Karnataka. The ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, as they've crammed in as many tables as possible, and the service is super efficient. So happy to have found this delicious (and inexpensive) Southern Indian restaurant in Paris. Situated right across the street from Gare du Nord, it's an easy trip from any part of town. We went at an "off" hour, so not all menu items were available. But that didn't matter, since we went with the goal of eating some Masala Dosas. And eat we did! The huge dosas were served with 4 different accompaniments- all flavorful, with just the right amount of spice. Mango lassis cooled us down nicely. And let's not forget the climatasion (air conditioning). Very much appreciated on this summer day. You know it's authentic when all the clientele is Indian. And yes, they speak English. This restaurant was great for authentic Indian food. The menu had many, many pages but it seems like many of the options weren't available. For example, I asked for Chana masala, and the waiter said he could give me a side of chickpeas with a fried dough instead of traditional Chana masala (with rice). My husband got the special meal with multiple sides and he was happy with all of the options included in his meal. read more

I'm pretty surprised at the 1 star review of this place. This was hands down the best Indian food I have tried in Paris, and believe me, I've tried my fair share. I cannot speak to it's authenticity, as I have never been to India, and am not an expert on the cuisine, but I can say that I can handle my fair amount of spice, and this place had me reaching for the lassi more than once. We tried several things on the menu, but I was particularly taken by the dosa masala-a crispy crepe filled with potato-onion curry. I've been dreaming about it all week. The prices are low, except for the drinks, which is understandable as the beers are imported, and the lassis made fresh. The service is a bit erratic, but definitely charming. I have a standing lunch date with a friend at Krishna Bhavan (which I like very much too), and on a whim, we decided to try Saravanaa Bhavan. We are both complete SriLankan/South Indian food novices, so take that into consideration when reading my review. I had the rava dosa, and she had the masala dosa. Both were pleasantly hot, especially by the standard of restaurants in Paris. I thought both were delicious - very fresh tasting, light, not greasy. The same goes for the accompanying sauces. I mis-judged the size of the dish. I didn't know how much to order, but the low price of the dosa (5,50 - 6EUR, I think), should have clued me in. I could have eaten more. If I had been hungrier, or for dinner, I would have ordered another round, as the people next to us seemed to be doing. I got a mango lassi afterwards as a dessert, and together with the one dosa that was definitely enough for lunch. As someone else mentioned, the drinks definitely bring the bill up. Our coca lights were 3EUR each - next time I will stick to water. I thought that the service was OK. The waiter hovered around us waiting to take our order, which made me uncomfortable. The menu is huge! Other than that, it was not noticeably good or bad service. This was at around 1pm, mid-week. We are going back next week, and bringing friends! We were excited to try some south Indian food in Paris.. of course, Saravana Bhavan is best for that. Saravana Bhavan is located right opposite Gare Du Nord station, hence pretty easy to find. However, it is not close to any major tourist attractions; about a 15-20 min train ride from the main touristy areas. The wait was about 10-15 mins on a Sunday night. Seating was slightly cramped (coming from USA) but adequate from Paris standards. The staff spoke fluent French and English. The crowd eating there was a nice mix of locals, tourists and internationals. The pricing was appropriate from Paris standards. Service was slightly slow, but again - adequate from Paris standards. Of course, Saravana bhavan delivers with authentic style dosas but we were not too impressed with the taste of the dosas, as we have tried Saravana Bhavans in couple of US locations and even in Chennai India. The taste was comparable but not as great. We asked for the dosas to be made crisp but they were not made that way. The portions were small, but the sambar and chutney were also not enough. The staff didn't return to check if we wanted anything. All in all an average experience (2.5/5) The ambiance was average and the restrooms were not clean and extremely small. But being a South Indian, I want to try saravana Bhavan first. No doubt food was very authentic and tasty. We ordered mini idlis, onion rava dosa and full meals. Their sambar was to die for although they don't serve it hot. So pls ask them to warm it for u if its not coz it's no fun eating mini idlis n sambar that's not hot! It's a disgrace that his place has very poor service. They don't really keep track of who comes first and who needs to be seated first. Just make sure u get good service by not shying away to ask them. We would come back for the food probably on our next vacation to paris! read more

Best Indian food you can get in Paris. I have tried almost all Indian restaurants and this is perhaps the best Indian food. I am a non-vegetarian and prefer to eat chicken when I go to a restaurant. But this vegetarian restaurant is an exception. We ordered plenty of food and everything was excellent. This is the cheapest food you can get anywhere in Paris. I am not sure how some people call this expensive. They are probably comparing with food prices in India. Otherwise the food is cheapest in Paris. Portions are very good. Chilli Paneer and Gobi 65 were mouth watering. Spring rolls were good. Idly, dosa, Paneer Biryani, vada were excellent. I would give 5 out of 5 for food. Surprisingly they serve drinks too. Service is beyond rude. I had dinner with a friend yesterday evening. We had finished our dinner and were chatting (normal). The waiter spoke to us rudely and told us that we needed to leave twice - despite the fact that there were plenty of tables available, it was only 10:30pm - the restaurant closes at 11pm and there were still people eating.
