It was only 2 hours from the opening time and ribs were out. Hopefully they improve this in the future. Also disappointed that there was no brisket on the menu. Brisket is king of BBQ. read more

We saw this restaurant as we drove into town. It is always a good thing to see not only the billowing of smoke rolling off of the smoker, but also the chef or pit-master attending to his artistry. My wife ordered the pulled pork tacos and reported they were wonderful. I ordered a tri-tip sandwich. It was stacked with tender smoked tri-tip and mushrooms. The bun was nicely charred on the grill and came together very nicely. What changed the experience for the better was I watched the chef bring a platter of wings in. I had to have some. So many wrong things tonight. We had a party of 7 and we were there when they first opened. 1. We ordered two of the meat platters and they ran out of sausage and gave us chicken wings. They didn't tell us they were out or asked if we wanted something else. They had a spicy rub which was ok. 2. We ordered waffle fries, got string fries. Out of waffles and didn't tell or ask. 3. Asked for a beer. The guy didn't know what kind of beers they have and wanted me to scan a bar code to see the beers. And told me he can't serve beers, but served beers to other tables. 4. Asked for extra bbq sauce on the side, didn't get it. 5. My wife didn't get a plate. They said they ran out, no plate, no bowls or any type of tray. 3 workers even the manager said that. We were rabid fans of Rip City Grill when they were around in SE PDX. There was nothing whatsoever bad on that menu. When we moved to Sandy, we found they had been reborn out here as Sandbar! Sort of. The really, really good: the tri tip sandwich is AWESOME. It is amazing. The tri tip tacos are also heavenly. The chili is also super good! The not-bad-but-was-hoping-for-more: the burger is not nearly as good compared to what I considered to be the best burger in Portland back at Rip City. Whatever is missing is missed dearly! The fantastic jalapeno poppers are also missing, as are the potatoes. The bar is just ok. Lots of brioche buns here too. Ugh. They are different restaurants, I know, and I am grateful that the tri tip is still as glorious as ever. I was really hoping for a superb cheeseburger, but it just didn't deliver, so I stick with the tri tip. The building itself is really comfortable, and is a pleasure to visit. Only 3 stars? Not that I have tried a lot of barbecue in the Portland area YET, this location serves up some pretty good smoked meats. Been there a couple of times. Service is average and friendly. First times there we had four adults and three of us shared the Meat Sweats platter which was plenty of food for two couples. There are not enough ribs for a larger group though. Loved the dry rub chicken wings and the pulled pork. My son enjoyed the smoked tri-tip. Went back on my own as I was craving the Mac and cheese I had the first time there. I so badly wanted to love this place! My family of 3 (me, husband & toddler) went a month or so after their grand opening. It took forever for us to place an order, including drink order. I know everything was new and probably extra busy since they were newly open. But after the long wait for our food, my husband and I got ours, they literally forgot my kidlets order. Most restaurants try to get kiddos food out first. The food was fine, nothing super exciting, but again, giving the benefit of the doubt. My husband was ready to write it off, but I wanted to give them another shot. Almost a year later, I finally was able to give then second chance. They weren't busy at all, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity. It still took forever to place our order. However, my husband asked for a cup of ice and it took us asking 3 different times in at least a 45 minute span for the waitress to remember. My husband & I shared the baby sweats, and everything tasted like vinegar, and I didn't realize bbq sauce was extra that we had to order, the baked beans are more like chili, and the coleslaw had no dressing. We never got a refill of the warm water (the reason my husband asked for ice). I did like the tri tip on the platter, but for $50 I should have liked more than a couple small slices of steak. Which by the way, you don't get a receipt/bill, just a total owed at the end, so hopefully the bill is correct! Sandbar gets 1 extra star for their epic cornbread. Monday evening, Smashburger had less than 1/4" tomato slices and the pickle slices were about 1/8" thick. Was decent but would have liked to have a knife to cut it in half. Waffle fries were all over cooked. Beans were very dry and the cornbread was way over baked almost black on the bottom. Coleslaw was tasteless and sauce under it was watery. Ribs were tender but so much so that you couldn't pick them up by the bone and the sauce was the only thing holding them together. Over sauced I'd say.Ice in the water would have been nice also. First time visiting. Overall, I'm very pleased with the service and quality of food. Our party had the tri-tip tacos which had amazing flavor. Also, the pork egg rolls, are going to be a staple, anytime we go. We sat outside, and there was always someone checking in on us, refilling drinks and just generally being attentive. They were super busy and our food took a little longer than expected to get out, but that doesn't surprise me with how packed they were with a line out the door.
