I've never experienced a more horrible customer service. we went there for sushi and hibachi and my steak came out cold on a large plate trying to hide their small portions for their prices. my friends ordered yum yum sauce for their meals and poured it over their meals and were immediately shocked and disgusted with the taste. if y'all been to hibachi places before, you know yum yum sauce DOES NOT include strawberry and banana?? which the manager legitimately admitted to having in their sauce? who mixes banana and strawberries with mayo as the key ingredient in yum yum sauce?? my friends no longer wanted to eat their food, after taking I kid you not ONE bite and they refused to take the food off or discount it. instead, she was forced to pay for food she didn't eat and then continued to argue with us why she thinks it's not her restaurant fault but it's ours for not liking their food?? read more

We stopped in late on a Tuesday night. Not many choices at 9pm outside a burger joint. I had garlic teriyaki and my husband enjoyed the fresh tuna. We both had miso soup, rice and veggies. I had never tried plum wine, so I gave that a go. It was too sweet for me--think cough syrup--that is probably what it's suppose to be but it was a no go for me. After hiking Alamere Falls, my friend and I were craving Japanese food. After a quick Yelp search , we decided to come here. Small parking lot behind the restaurant. We got there right when it opened. Soon after the place began to fill up giving us the impression the place was popular. Inside is very clean and interesting with photos of samurais. Service was good and fairly quick. I went with the crispy California roll, rock and roll , miso soup and edamame . Miso soup was good and tasty. Edamame was warm with a hint of salt on them. We went on a double-date last night at Samurai and it provided delicious, inexpensive sushi in a comfy setting. Our waiter was very attentive and, if anything, over-attentive as he kept trying to get our order before we were ready. We drank a large asahi ($6.50), a large sapporo ($6.50), asahi black ($4.50), and a glass of chardonnay ($7). The combo dinners come with miso soup, cucumber salad (wish it were seaweed!), a weird potato appetizer, and white rice. I ordered the chicken name ($10.50) to share which was similar to a chicken & veggie udon. It was good but not great. The miso was really good though! We also ordered lots of delicious rolls including eel/cucumber, 49ers, Alaskan, spicy tuna, etc. They were pretty fresh and satisfying. For the four of us, the bill was about $100 after tip. I am quite glad my family and I found this cute little Japanese restaurant embedded within Mill Valley. Located in a rather lively street of restaurants, it can be a bit harder to find parking at times. I would recommend making a reservation before coming (even calling earlier in the day to make the reservation), as every time I've gone there was a rather substantial line. Dinner combination: Tempura and Beef Sukiyaki I love these combos! Their tempura is quite delicious, deep fried well (and you can tell the oil is clean as the tempura is all light-colored). Their beef sukiyaki is on the salty side, so you can't drink (or perhaps you just shouldn't) drink the broth here. It is also a tad strange that they use both udon and cellophane noodles (traditionally it's just cellophane noodles). Yosenabe: This is also a bit straying from tradition in terms of the seafood they put in their yosenabe. However, as a big fan of fish, this dish was great for me. Their broth is lighter so it is suitable to drinking as well. Unfortunately, the fish pieces, along with the udon, was all rather overcooked, to the extent that what should be tender pieces of salmon end up being chewy and occasionally tough. Their udon also tends to be too soft. (I think it was cooked better the first time I visited) Sushi rolls: I've tried a few, and the ones I've had are all quite good! My favorite is the Dynamite roll, I believe. The portion sizes definitely vary though, so it may be good to double check before you order in case you need to figure out portion sizes beforehand. Their staff is rather disorganized, as we were asked what we wanted to order twice (the second guy finally realized after asking us that we didn't even have menus on our table anymore) and were also asked if we were ready for the check after we had already paid. Given the choice, I would likely rate this 3.5 stars, with a little adjustment as it's located in Marin. Overall, the food is decent, flavorful, and it's always nice to have more Asian food options in Marin. read more

My only problem was we went for an early dinner which meant it was family time... which meant it was quite noisy. I'm glad for Saurai, but a little hard to have a conversation at a normal volume. Really good sushi in one of the most beautiful areas of the Bay Area. I'm starting to try to understand and appreciate sushi more and one part of that involves getting real authentic wasabi. Not all sushi restaurants offer it, but Samurai had it for an additional $3. Went really well with their nigiri and sashimi's which were absolutely delicious. Most sushi joints I go to offer one type of each fish, but the choices were more varied at Samurai. For example, usually I can order a tuna sashimi or nigiri. But at Samurai they had three different types of tuna, each with different prices so I'm guessing each was came from a different quality of tuna. I came here with a group of friends so we took a table, which had nice seat cushions that made the experience just that much more enjoyable. If I come back again though and am alone or just with a friend or two I think I will go for the sushi bar. The chef definitely knew what he was doing, and the people at the bar looked like they were having a good time and enjoying their dinner. read more

A strong 4. Food was delish but the wait time was too long. I know you can't help it if it's too busy- and I found out that night they take reservations which I will be making from now on- but the wait staff took about 10 minutes to clean off and re- set and we were hearing that this is an reoccurring issue with the he establishment. It opened at 5- we were there at 5:15 and had to wait over an hour. I guess in being a little too picky - but just FYI. The food was great. We ordered the tempura dinners, Unagi and salmon rolls and the salmon spicy tuna crunch. All delicious and left you wanting more. Fresh ingredients and plenty on the potion size. I had the most wonderfully bizarre experiences here. I am in town for four days due to a conference, and I made it my mission to find a solid Japanese place where I could consume all the sushi, rolls, and green tea of my heart's desire. Samurai fit the bill indeed. I much preferred sitting up at the counter and watching the art take place. The fish was very fresh and the presentation was stunning. The first night I was there I wanted to try a dessert in addition to my meal. Hell, it's almost mother's day and I'm a mother, so why not I figured. Little did I know that the tempura covered green tea ice cream could feed around 4. I did engulf around 68% of it; not too shabby but stomach ache definitely followed (my own doing). But the second night....ohh the second night! Ha! I became slightly "trapped" in the corner seat I took at the sushi bar and met some wonderfully over-the-top individuals who talked about all subjects under the sun while gesticulating largely in the air. I won't name names....in fact, I don't truly even know one of the individual's names since I think he was using an "alias", but man, what a strange and "therapeutic" evening. Always experience the freshest sashimi here. Although I live in SF now, this is our family's go-to sushi spot when I come home to visit my parents in Mill Valley and my mom doesn't feel like cooking. We like to sit at the sushi-bar because instead of trying to make a decision from the menu, we just let the master behind the bar decide for us! It makes it way more fun and everything is always delicious and so on point. Last night my mom and I even named the roll we ate "Dae Bak Roll" - it was that good...made up of salmon on the outside, avocado, sriracha aoli, some sweet sauce, spicy tuna on the inside, and some crunchy tempura flakes on the outside....BOMB. I just enjoyed a very enjoyable dinner at Samurai tonight but as I walked back to my car, the Manager approached me in the front seat of my car angry that I had parked in a space he says that should be blocked off but was not. When I parked it was the only space in their back lot open with the cones to the far left side so I assumed it was a good space to park. I'm a long time customer but the way he accused me of parking in a space he says is not a space but should be coned off but wasn't was disrespectful in my opinion. I'm a longtime customer and supported your restaurant regularly through the pandemic. There were two workers sitting outside when I parked and they could have said something to me about the parking space but chose not to say anything. He should be mad at them and not me. I did not move the cones and he accused me that I did move them. He should ask his employees why they didn't help their customer. read more

I've been going here for 2 years. I've eaten here more than any other restaurant I frequent. My 2 favorite dishes are The Poke Salad and the Hamachi Crunch. The Poke Salad is simply fantastic and lately, it's all I order as I've been on a diet since January. I can't say enough about the freshness of the fish and the great staff. This little gem was delicious. My husband and I visited for date night and the seafood was amazingly fresh.. you could taste the ocean. I ordered the Aji(horse mackerel) ocean trout and octopus sashimi and it was worth every dollar. The prices are reasonable compared to my home state for a sashimi platter. There are not too many choices for Japanese/sushi in southern Marin. Sushi Ran of Sausalito is in first by a wide margin. However, Samurai takes a solid second spot in my view. The nigiris are not rice heavy. The fish portions are good. There are a few improvement areas in the food however: - the wasabi is awful. It is the weakest item in the place. It behooves them to spend pennies more and make it edible. - my kids noticed the fish is not as fresh as what we buy from the market in Japan Town. Notably, the hamachi and ikura. Service can be rushed at times. For its environment this is a four star restaurant, but it would be a three in a more competitive market. read more

Nowhere else have we ever experienced sushi remotely close to the high levels of quality AND value that my wife and I experience in this restaurant. Is it because we're regulars? We love Japanese food and have come to samurai for many years specially foe celebration. However, our most experience was not good one. We ordered combo and sashimi 15 piece dinner and spider roll sushi. The rice made sushi was good. But the rice came with our combo and sashimi dinner was under cooked, like 1/2 cooked. When we brought issue to the manager, he said "so you don't want it"? How could you have sashimi dinner/combo dinner without rice? The question it self showed the manager has no knowledge of Japanese custom at all! We said "yes of course we want rice. But we would like cooked rice". The manager then said "they all like this (half cooked)" and walked away. So we ended up spent over $70 for two with 1/2 cooked rice! To my opinion. This is not how you treat your customers. How could a Japanese restaurant has no fully cooked rice? Not only we wasted $70, but ruin our celebration! read more
