Was here when it first opened back around 1980. Just went back and no Japanese sushi guys left. They have been replaced. Full bate & switch deal with the menu prices listed on their website vs. the prices in the restaurant. Complete burn with nigiri about 25% more and the sashimi about 50% more than on their website. $10 on their site and $15 at the restaurant. Hey Samurai, how about taking 5 minutes to update the prices on your website so you do not burn your customers with the false advertising !! We got up and left. read more

As I was there to pick up my to-go order, there were 3 workers standing there with their arm behind their backs doing nothing, the receptionist/cashier taking a phone order and I stood there for 5 mins as the other workers twiddled their thumbs. Then when he finally gets off the phone I tell him my name for my order and he say they didn't get the order and "the phone cut out so we didn't get enough of your information". Uhhhh. What?? This isn't true because I completed the phone call and hung up AND Maybe you should've called me back? So had nothing to reply to them and said well then can you place my order again, I guess. I love this place so much! It is the best place in mill valley for sushi and such great prices. My favorites are the una mega 3, Stinson maki, and the hamachi crunch. It's helpful to call ahead to make reservations as they do get busy on weekends and it is a small space but I have always received wonderful service and I love the cozy ambiance. Solid combination dinner/ bento box options with great value for the area--would come back if I were in the area and craving Japanese food. My friend and I were dying of hunger after a long hike, so we impulsively decided to go here on a Saturday evening and thankfully did not have to wait to get seated. The interior was quaint and inviting, similar to most mom-and-pop Japanese restaurants. - Price: For $19, the combination bento box (salmon teriyaki + tempura) had a decent amount of food, especially since it included beansprouts, sweet potato, miso soup, cucumber salad, and kale (as garnish). For the area, I'd say the prices of the bento were alright, especially for the value and seafood option. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion of the tempura, especially given that the dinner combo (w/ two options) was only $3 more than if I were to get the salmon teriyaki dinner on its own. - Taste: agedashi tofu was okay--not outstanding by any means--as it was slightly gloppy and not as crispy as I would've liked. However, I was really satisfied by the light crunchiness of the tempura, which didn't seem as greasy and overly battered as some other places usually make it. The salmon was also cooked perfectly medium, and the sauce, bean sprouts, and sweet potato complimented it quite well. We've been living in Mill Valley for over 3 years now, but this week was the first time we tried out Samurai. And I'm asking myself now: why has it taken us so long? In fact, it was at a garden party last weekend that another Mill Valleyan told us that this was their favorite sushi place in town. We arrived rather early (it was about 6pm on a Wednesday) and even at that time it was already quite busy. We chose to sit at the sushi bar, as we like ordering with the folks behind the bar directly. Plus, you can watch them busy bees making all of our food. The highlight was of the meal was the mountain tamachi roll, which was nice and spicy, but also creamy and served warm. Unusual, but that was exactly the point. We had several pieces of nigiri as well, mostly choosing from the specials board hanging at the bar. By the time we were leaving, the place was filled to the brim and we were happy to have come early. read more

Your waitress was DISRESPECTFUL, SNOOTY, SNIDEFUL & ABRASIVE. What sort of waitress TOSSES menus at their customers, moves dirty dishes ON TOP of someone's belongings rather than taking them into the kitchen, all the while giving the customer a SNOOTY, SNIDEFUL smirk when they deliver such a gesture? This has been an incredible hidden gem we discovered recently. After a very long, hot day in the city, we stopped in on a Saturday night recently. It was very full and there was a wait list, but we got sat within 10 minutes with a few parties ahead of us. The inside is small, but very cozy. We sat at the sushi bar. We ordered so many things likes shiitake miso soup and enoki miso soup, chicken yakatori, and three rolls. It was all so delicious and the price is very good for Marin! Since then, we've ordered takeout and have really gone all in and buying a lot more than we usually do because we've been so hungry, but again surprised at the price point being pretty reasonable the quality is very good! This sushi spot is a definitely a must-go! I came to Marin because my sister lived here in this area before, and she recommended this place for sushi. And wow was I impressed! I came here for dinner, and their menu was comprised with so many different options of rolls, nigiris, sashimi, noodle/rice bowls, and dinner sets. I decided to get the sashimi dinner set to satisfy my cravings! You can basically select 3 fishes (Salmon, Tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail, etc.) and this set gives you 12 pieces total for a little over $20. I was so surprised because to my own liking, it tasted quite fresh and the quality of the fish had a very "melty" texture which I really enjoyed. The service in my opinion was pretty good too and also the chef that cuts the fish was super friendly and sociable! I'm a huuuge lover for sushi and this restaurant definitely possessed some really good fish. If I ever come back to this area, I'll definitely give Samurai another visit again! read more

This is my go-to sushi spot in Marin. I'm known to be a bit of a sushi-holic, and Samurai gets it right every single time. They frequently have cuts of fish you don't normally see in Japanese restaurants. Definitely check the specials board! I like sitting at the sushi bar here, service seems to be much faster, and I always know what I want already. The wait can get long in evenings and especially on weekends. If I'm having a craving at those times, I'll usually call in some of my favorite dishes. Their salmon is always delicious, the fish is super fresh & yummy. It's definitely not a fancy Marin spot, but I tend to prefer the casual atmosphere. If you're coming with 4 or more people, I'd call to make a reservation, it can take a LONG time for them to have space for more than 4 people. Their sushi is solid and great value relative to other options in the area. During COVID, though, their operation could use refinement. I had to call 33 times (literally--I had the count on my iphone) before I got through. And when I arrived to pick up my order, it was a bit disorganized and running behind. So, I stood in line to pay for my order that wasn't quite ready and I lingered by the door. Thankfully, the guy was checking orders that were arriving from the bar and called my number (which he didn't give me, but I gave him my name and it was, in fact, my order). So, Brian (the owner), if you're reading this, I agree with someone else who suggested additional phone lines/staff who can take orders AND some operations work internally to figure out how the processes to streamline the payment, identification of orders inside the restaurant, and getting the orders into customers' hands. read more

Very mediocre. We were not impressed with anything we got. The nabe seafood soup was bland and only had chunks of what seemed to be old salmon. There was no other seafood to be found. The two rolls we got were drenched in white sauce, and were not much better than what you get at an ayce sushi place. Pretty small too. Im not even sure they were the correct ones we ordered but there was so much sauce it was hard to tell. The cucumber salad was not bad. As for the service, we ordered at the counter and came back 30 min later. The cashier forgot to pass on our order to the kitchen. It wasnt very busy when we ordered so thats odd. We also had asked for extra ginger, and were assured we would get some, but that was also forgotten. Perhaps a notepad would be of use? Sadly this was not a great new sushi place in mill valley that we were hoping to find. Definitely wont be coming back. read more

My friend and I came in on a Wednesday night. There are was a short wait, but we were seated with 5-10 mins. Parking was also not bad, lots of parking in front of the restaurant and a little lot you can pull into. Just beware that the restaurant isn't that big! So beware of big groups. I personally really enjoyed the sushi here at Samurai. The fish tasted fresh, portions, and service were good. Definitely left the place feeling satisfied! I ordered the 49ers roll and tempura roll. I asked for no cucumbers in the tempura roll and they gave me issues with that. Also, asked for spicy mayo on the side. I was pleasantly surprised with their spicy mayo - it really wasn't that spicy but enough for me to taste and enjoy my sushi even more. They were bussing the tables with bus tubs ON the tables like in the prison cafeteria. This place seemed like a popular place from the outside and once we were seated we realized that it is. Small seating area, very loud so if you're looking for a lively vibe, this is the place to go... but it was SO incredibly hard to hear my boyfriend from across the table and we were practically yelling to be able to hear each other. I looked around and other people seemed to be yelling to be able to have conversations too. Seating at the bar might be a better option. Even though the place was busy on a Friday night, there were 5 servers walking around at a time so I don't think there's an excuse for subpar service. Our table set-up didn't have soy sauce dipping plates (unlike other tables). I get it, they might have just been busy at the time. Then when our appetizers came out our server didn't offer or bring small plates for us to eat.. it's usually given at other sushi restaurants. We had to ask for plates after waiting to see if he went back to get them (he didn't). Our server also asked if we wanted more water, but never came back to refill water after we had said yes. Sushi was okay for the prices. I think there are better sushi places in Marin County, but maybe we were there on an off night. Like I said, it seemed like the place to go. I've never experienced a more horrible customer service. we went there for sushi and hibachi and my steak came out cold on a large plate trying to hide their small portions for their prices. my friends ordered yum yum sauce for their meals and poured it over their meals and were immediately shocked and disgusted with the taste. if y'all been to hibachi places before, you know yum yum sauce DOES NOT include strawberry and banana?? which the manager legitimately admitted to having in their sauce? who mixes banana and strawberries with mayo as the key ingredient in yum yum sauce?? my friends no longer wanted to eat their food, after taking I kid you not ONE bite and they refused to take the food off or discount it. instead, she was forced to pay for food she didn't eat and then continued to argue with us why she thinks it's not her restaurant fault but it's ours for not liking their food?? read more

Must order hamachi kama! The buttery melt-in-your-mouth grilled yellow tail collar was such a bomb that all of us, a party of six, voted that it was the best dish of the night. Like every dishes here, the portion was generous, we got two pieces of the fish collar instead one like in most of the other restaurants. Everyone got to sample it and was so impressed. Food tasted simple AND delicious. Aside from hamachi Kama, the unagi mega three sushi was no.2 for us, inside it was warm sweet unagi (eel), outside coated fresh sashimi, it's rich in flavor and texture. The seafood nabe was no. 3, full of veggie, tofu, and seafood balls and fish meat in a sweet miso soup. Nabe udon was no. 4, udon could been cooked a bit longer. Yes I ordered chicken from a Japanese restaurant but it was seriously disgusting. Told our waiter and he didn't care.
