Same Same is a hip Thai spot on Sunset in Silver Lake, right next door to Daw Yee Myanmar Corner. It's probably in direct competition with Night Market Song a half mile away--they're both destination restaurants with excellent food and atmosphere, and I may actually like Same Same better. Either way, I'm glad they both exist, and would be pleased if five more places opened up in the same vein, preferably in my neighborhood. I love a place with delicious Thai food that also offers alcohol and a fun, sit-down-and-linger vibe.
I went last month with a work friend, who kindly treated me to a wonderful dinner. We were able to walk in at 7:00 on a Thursday, which I'm not sure you can do at Night Market Song--there was even free, easy parking in the strip mall lot. The place was lovely, charmingly decorated with a trendy wine bar feel. There was a nice-looking wine list, but we decided not to partake, sharing a couple cold, tall Singha lagers instead. Service was great. Our waiter made some helpful recommendations, and we ate very well following her advice.
The food was absolutely delicious. We shared the pa piad sod and the pla muk yang to start. The pa pia sod was the house fresh spring roll with prawns, pork, tofu, bean sprouts, chive, and cucumber wrapped in thin sticky rice paper, topped with serrano chili and tamarind sauce. Tasty and satisfying with a spicy kick. The pla muk yang was even better. This was charcoal-grilled squid with the perfect supple, chewy texture. It came with a side of p'lek sauce, a flavorful mix of bird's eye chili, lime, fish sauce, and cilantro.
We doubled up on chicken for dinner, getting the khao mun gai tod and the khao soi. This turned out to be a great decision, the two dishes very different and both superb. The khao mun gai tod was Thai fried chicken, crispy and flavorful, served over garlic rice with cilantro and an addictive sweet chili sauce. The khao soi was Same Same's coconut curry noodle, and it might have been the best version I've had in town, with chicken drumstick, egg noodles, yellow and red curry spices, chili oil, coconut milk, crispy noodle, pickled cabbage, lime, and red onions. The soupy curry was fantastic, and the chicken was falling-apart tender.
We shared the mango sticky rice for dessert, and this was a great, sweet end to our dinner. The mango was fresh, soft and ripe, and it came with warm sticky rice drizzled with coconut cream.
I loved Same Same and want to go back as soon as possible, both to eat all of the above again and to try everything else on the menu. It's a treasure of a restaurant, full marks for atmosphere, service, and mouthwatering Thai food. read more
