I came in for lunch shortly after they opened, there were a few people inside. We ordered a variety of dishes to share between 3 of us. I love a Traditional summer roll with peanut sauce, it always feels so light to eat with shrimp & veggies. The Mango cucumber salad was sweet and light as well, I could eat that every day. The Vietnamese chicken wings are tossed in a spicy, tangy, sweet & sour glaze- great heat to them and they strayed juicy. The Wok tossed noodles are a good size for sharing with veggies and your choice of protein. The Caramelized shrimp were a special from the board- they were good sized shrimp & decent size plate for sharing. I hadn't been to Gingergrass in a while because my son and I like Indochine which is also nearby. I suggested we try them again because he really likes chicken banh mi and he can make a comparison. Today we went for lunch, which was a Sunday, so not crowded yet, highly preferable personally speaking. Our server was super nice and attentive, I'm sorry I didn't get her name, she is the Japanese lady. I even forgot my keys and she went out of her way to return them to me! In the years prior, there wasn't a bar, there was seating. I imagine it's very bustling for dinner. So, son had the chicken banh mi with taro fries (they looked more like sweet potato fries to me, plus they didn't seem freshly fried, very cooled off and chewy and the seasoning, probably curry or turmeric powder, will stain your fingers) and I had the chicken Imperial roll bun cha gio, my go-to Vietnamese dish to try. We really liked the chilled water in wine bottles served with steel cups, the steel forks and chopsticks. I also liked the tasteful paper napkins, I hadn't seen those before. The food was mostly fine. I really like their egg rolls. Portions were just right, flavors good. Son said he prefers the cuts of chicken at Indochine better, which are long grilled strips, as opposed to pieces of grilled chicken, as it made the sandwich messy. Mine was fine, I prefer a more salty fish sauce taste, but that is a matter of preference. Oh, the other great thing about Gingergrass is their price point. Compared to Indochine, they are lower, a big plus. The reason for not 5 stars goes back to years prior, I don't like the acoustics. It's very loud in there because they don't have any baffling in the ceiling. I also noticed the music definitely caters to the millenial crowd, today it was early 2000s pop, along with letting dogs inside, which I sincerely do not like because dogs have dander. Gingergrass has the potential to be great, but they can't seem to get their act together on the logistics side. The most inexplicably slow kitchen and dysfunctional ordering experiences time after time. One hour that turns into 2 hours for a couple sandwiches is absurd. They have some great dishes and flavors, even if some people complain that it's not super authentic Vietnamese food. It's definitely California-ized and the price reflects that too. My main complaint about the food is that the Bahn Mi could stand to be a little less wet. The bread is often soggy and disintegrating. Our server was great. The staff lovely. Food tasted good and overall great experience. Few issues: I paid extra for brisket. Brisket that comes with Pho in most Vietnamese restaurants is a completely different type of brisket and it's cooked differently. This brisket was basically barbecued brisket that you would slice for a sandwich. It does not belong in Pho. Also, the beef broth was nowhere near being authentic, but the soup was still lovely. I completely understand the neighborhood that we're in and the type of clientele that they are serving, but just attach more flavor in the broth would make it a stand out. read more

I have ordered twice within the week and I have not been let down!! The other day I was craving a bún bowl and the one with tofu did not disappoint! It was tasty, filling yet light and has the perfect amount of ingredients. I will be ordering this again someday! Last night I ordered the wok fried cauliflower which has the most delightful flavor. It is sweet citrus flavor that is somewhat similar to orange chicken. I also ordered the famous wok tossed noodles with tofu. This is just as tasty as pad Thai but different at the same time. Lots of yummy ingredients that come together well. I also had their ginger beer which was very tasty as well! Overall this place is where it's at! One of my favorite Vietnamese spots to order from on my way home. Pros: -delicious and sizable portions -Friendly staff -real Vietnamese beer (as someone who is Vietnamese having a place that I can quickly and easily get items that are significant to me is important) -order for pick up Cons: -indoor seating is tight, I personally don't like being so close to other people -it's really dark at night (look, i'm not getting any younger and trying to read a menu in the dark is horrible) -the white guy (maybe the owner?) is nice and all but has no problem inserting himself into a conversation. Some people don't mind, but my wife and I already have some introverted tendencies and it just makes us uncomfortable. --on that note we just usually avoid dining in. That way we get our delicious food and can be in the privacy of our own home. -they allowed someone to eat indoors with their dog (that wasn't a service animal) there was plenty of outdoor seating and the dog owners even seemed a little apprehensive about being indoors. I've lived in the area for quite some time now and this is the first time I've been here and now I know why...Gingergrass is good, but did not have the authentic Vietnamese flavor that I am used to. Let me put it this way...Would you rather eat in Chinatown, Alhambra or go to Panda Express? OK, maybe that's an extreme, but I think you get the point. There is just so much more options within a 15 minute drive away. I guess we are spoiled a bit in LA when it comes to Vietnamese food; you just need to know where to go. Gingergrass is for those who haven't ventured outside of Silver Lake or don't want to brave the LA traffic, but still want to eat something Vietnamese. The meat in the pho was very tender. The broth wasn't as clear or potent, but had flavor to it. The bread for the Bahn mi was more of a nice, baguette in France and not the normal crusty roll. Not sure if this is Vietnamese owned or just someone who decided to rip off the culture. By the beef pho I feel it's a rip off culture. Go to pho Saigon in Alhambra WAAAY better flavor and you actually get what you paid for and it's authentic you get meatballs and tendons and tripe and so much more meat and the broth is so good. I wasted almost $80 on a sandwich a bowl of pho that my toddler finished that had 0 flavor and 5 slices of beef, and the tiniest egg rolls with a coffee. Maybe it's the location/area but nah you can't fool me. I'm full of regret for even trying something different. read more

NO to the PHO Yes to the service and atmosphere. This review is only regarding pho - not sure how you can have star anise, ginger and clove in a bone broth and it not be flavorful at all.... I was expecting something unique for my palate considering I haven't seen these ingredients in a pho broth and yet I couldn't taste any of those ingredients and actually, any flavor at all. The beef pho was so plain and my friend had the veggie pho and said the same thing. When it came out with tons of basil, I was joking around about how much there was and yet I ended up using it all! just to get some flavor going, as well as adding all the condiments and sauces. Pho shouldn't need to rely on all the extras to get flavor. I've had many that have outstanding flavors in the broth itself. Also, I was blowing away at my first bite, expecting the usual piping hot dish and it wasn't hot at all. The portion was good, enough noodles and plenty of meat but it's not something I would order again. I did like how they serve a complimentary snack when you sit down (something I think all restaurants should adopt) and that was really yummy. Ordered again on Saturday, this time food for 2! I was excited to try their Ribeye Fresh Roll but was "unavailable" when I tried to order it. Craving beef, I chose their noodle dish wish was just okay -- small amount of beef and tasted too jerky-ish and felt like something was missing (also could have included more noodles, was more beansprout than anything lol and more sauce - not sure if what we got was even for the noodles tbh). The chicken banh mi, fresh summer roll and firecracker shrimp app were on point though. My husband thought the fresh summer roll rice paper wrapper was too thick / "mochi-ish" (but that's what I love about it lol). A pretty decent spot for some Asian/Vietnamese food. They have a good mix of classic dishes such as pho and rice platters. The service is friendly and they have lunch specials too. I ended up getting the "Animal Fries" which are a taro fries and a play on In-N-Out style of fries. Super crispy and playful. For my main, I got the Chicken Pho. It was not the best pho that I have had and the broth was subtle, but still good. Lastly, we got the Key Lime Bars. Super delicious, sweet and tangy! Definitely a Vietnamese-inspired restaurant. I enjoyed the chicken banh mi with all the elements of a traditional Vietnamese sandwich, but with an American twist. Surprisingly, what won me over was the taro fries lol. I think it's just been a minute since I've had these anywhere (besides from Vietnam) that I had to place two orders - one to enjoy there with my banh mi and one to-go! My Mom ordered the lemongrass chicken, but it was a bit too... soggy? We were looking for a more firm texture and flavor; this was definitely not for me, but I can see someone out there enjoying it. Excellent quality Filet Mignon which initially comes off soft, velvety, plush, then as you chew, the pleasant beefy chaw comes into play. The Nuoc Mam is sweetened so the beef is sweet & beefy making for a pleasing flavour contrast like certain kinds of beef jerky.  Sautéed purple onions w/ garlic undertone, and medium piquant Jalapeño add a sulphur based funk, and the piquancy is a good counter to the dulcet tone. Side of white Jasmine rice and chopped salad of Nappa cabbage, carrots, purple cabbage dressed w/  what may be the Nuoc Mam Lite. 1-2a)  Aslina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellen Bosch, So. Africa 2018 by "award winning Nisiki Biyela, South Africa's first female Black wine maker". Scent of dark fruits, astrigent alcohol. Taste of dark cherry, plummy, sweet-sour, acidic, woody, menthol, refreshing light bitterness.  Finish is blackberry, grainy, astringent. After letting it breath, the wine does mellow, but retains a fruity, acidic sprightliness. Back store tented former parking lot patio is open & pleasant enough shading away from the strong south and western sun. Went at 7p on a Friday. Started outside but quickly moved it because it was chilly (they did have heat lamps). Beer and wine only here (didn't indulge) started off with a little puffed snack to dip in peanut sauce. This was a unique and tasty touch. Ordered the bun noodle bowl. Honestly had to google it because I had never had one. It did not hit. It was basically eating a bowl of pho without the broth. The noodles and meat were cooked of course but the veggies were not. They give just a little bit of dressing that doesn't do much. Eating raw bean spouts with no seasoning is not a great experience for any of the senses. The manager and one server ran the dining customers. They did good considering it was quite busy in here. There was a lot of take out activity. Would consider trying this place again with another menu choice. But warning, bring a sweater or jacket, because the air conditioner fans blew the whole time (it was 50s outside ) and it got to be hard to sit there in it. read more

(I thereafter texted my friend that we needed to switch our hang out spot and meet at Gingergrass instead...) Anyways! Gingergrass is a lovely, casual, little spot. I sat outdoors with my friend and shared a bottle of wine, lemongrass chicken, and papaya salad. Everything was delicious. (And trust me, my friend is pretty picky eater, but she was floored at how delicious everything was!) AND THE WINE! The server recommended the Sant'Or and omg.... every drop was savored. I need to go buy it for my home. Anyways, great little place to hang out, drink some wine, and have good food. It's always a good sign when there's people lined up. We dropped by post the lunch crows, but there were a few people in front of us and more showed up after we ordered. Truth be told, our plan was to get coffee at the shop next to them, but I got out of the car and saw their sign and decided to pivot. My friends all agreed. I got the vegan coffee and papaya salad. It took me a while to finish the coffee because I completely forgot how strong Vietnamese coffee is. So strong that it's been hours and I'm still wide awake. The salad was great. The dressing that came with it was unexpectedly good. There was a hint of spice, but just a touch. I would most definitely come back to try other dishes/drinks.
