EXCELLENT PORK BANH MI IN SILVERLAKE =================================== My son was in the mood for a Banh Mi sandwich so we schlepped ourselves all the way over to Silverlake from La Canada to pick some up. That is a round trip of twenty two miles for us. We tend to bend over backwards when my son is in town because he lives so far away. Parking was definitely a challenge for sure. We drove around the block with no luck and finally parked on Hyperion about an eighth of a mile south of the restaurant. Mind you none of the parking meters were working and we just prayed we did not get a ticket. We took the sandwiches to go and got back to the car before getting a ticket. My husband and son ordered the beef steak banh mi. My pork banh mi was definitely the winner for everyone except my husband who doesn't eat pork. I know my son wished he would have ordered pork, but I let him have some of mine. All the sandwiches are $15.00 each. They only sell limited drinks so if you eat there you might want to bring your own. They did not have any Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke, so my husband was not prepared. Food: me and my wife ordered the chicken curry and it was good not bad and you get a ton of bread with it so it's nice to eat with the sauce. It is a little spicy to beware. The shredded chicken sandwich was okay also not bad but also super spicy so I ended up taking out most the sliced chili. The sauce it comes with is nice I would suggest to ask for extra because one is not enough... for me at least. The iced Vietnamese coffee was not bad it definitely had a strong coffee taste with a bit of sweetness. Service: it's a quick order and 2 steps walk over to the table. Nice and responsive. Pretty decent Bahn Mi Sandwiches here. Its a little small and easy to miss, but you get good service here. I wanted to like this place, I really did. The Banh Mi Dac Biet that I ordered was just okay. The bread was too hard and unpleasant to eat. The flavors of the meats and fillings were good though. But the point of a banh mi is the bread. Banh mi literally MEANS bread in Vietnamese. I also got the Spicy Chicken Curry bowl. I loooooove dipping my baguette into some curry but this was not it. The flavor was rather bland. It needed more saltiness and sweetness. The chicken was super tender though which was a plus. The curry was not spicy at all. I have never fancied myself a sandwich person, rice has always been my carb of choice. I have to admit... there is something magical about banh mi. Crispy thick cuts of French bread stuffed with all kinds of magic: smooth and savory pate, tender cuts of meat, aromatic sprigs of cilantro, and crunchy and tangy slices of radish and carrots. This establishment is very unassuming from the outside, there are a few tables for outside seating. Inside is a very quaint and straightforward establishment, one long table to fit a few guests and the order counter a few feet away. I've seen many posts about the roasted pork sandwich; which we were lucky to have on a Saturday... disappointingly, they were out of the crispy pork skin garnish that was coveted by many. Unfazed, I decided to order that as well as the lemongrass chicken banh mi, ca ri ga or spicy chicken curry, and their iced coffee. Lemongrass was delicious, although I would have a preferred a more distinct aromatic flavor. My boyfriend enjoyed the roast pork sandwich but noted that the flavor would be a lot better with the accompaniment of the crispy skin. The ca ri ga exceeded my expectations, I highly recommend ordering it with your sandwich so you can dip your sandwich into this deliciousness. It does have a little bit of a kick for those sensitive to spice, but it is so flavorful, hearty, and warming. Their coffee was on point. In hindsight now, they are probably leftovers from the day before. The bread is about 10 inches long and the thinnest I've ever seen. The ingredients inside the sandwiches were skimpy!!! Barely anything inside the sandwiches at all!!! The roast pork sandwiches didn't even have any picked veggies. All of the sandwiches were Tasteless and some parts, even questionable whether the ingredients have gone bad. Worst of all, those 4 little crappy sandwiches robbed $50 out of me. Yes, those Sandwiches are $12 each! They are not even worth $5 if you ask me. I never felt like such a sucker for buying from this place. Trust me, don't go.
