Please, O Bahn Mi, kick it up a notch. I wanted to like this place so bad. There is a shortage of good Vietnamese in the area, especially Bahn Mi. But when a tiny cigar of dry, low quality, bread comes to you with no condiments and hardly any preparation, it's hard not to be disappointed or even a bit angry. If this sandwich was under $10, then maybe. But at $15 it starts to get hard not to compare it to some of the best sandwiches in town, and this thing was lacking. Tiny bread, a paltry amount of each ingredient, each of which tasted ok and wasn't poor quality, to give credit where it's due. But, it's just lazy and careless. Like Lee's but expensive and smaller despite the notch up in quality. The Bahn Mi here would make a great $8 appetizer, but be warned, they may not even be bothered to cut this tiny thing in half all the way. Unless you just want a snack, be sure to get another dish. I've never tried the curry, but it's very hard to be interested after the Bahn Mi. Word to the restauranteurs. Go and get a top-rated sandwich in LA. Compare yours. Go try the Bahn Mi down the street at Gingergrass. There's a real potential clientele for your sandwiches here. Even if you bumped the price to $20 but made it excellent, I'd be right back in the door and I don't think I'm alone. If you want to remain the more simple, no frills version of this, that's great too, but let the prices reflect that and don't make the people that just want a good lunch be pissed that they didn't go elsewhere to spend $20 all in. Lastly, throwing a packet of sriracha in does not make up for lack of seasoning. I used it, but was angry that I had to and suddenly felt like I was eating Taco Bell. EXCELLENT PORK BANH MI IN SILVERLAKE =================================== My son was in the mood for a Banh Mi sandwich so we schlepped ourselves all the way over to Silverlake from La Canada to pick some up. That is a round trip of twenty two miles for us. We tend to bend over backwards when my son is in town because he lives so far away. Parking was definitely a challenge for sure. We drove around the block with no luck and finally parked on Hyperion about an eighth of a mile south of the restaurant. Mind you none of the parking meters were working and we just prayed we did not get a ticket. We took the sandwiches to go and got back to the car before getting a ticket. My husband and son ordered the beef steak banh mi. My pork banh mi was definitely the winner for everyone except my husband who doesn't eat pork. I know my son wished he would have ordered pork, but I let him have some of mine. All the sandwiches are $15.00 each. They only sell limited drinks so if you eat there you might want to bring your own. They did not have any Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke, so my husband was not prepared. Food: me and my wife ordered the chicken curry and it was good not bad and you get a ton of bread with it so it's nice to eat with the sauce. It is a little spicy to beware. The shredded chicken sandwich was okay also not bad but also super spicy so I ended up taking out most the sliced chili. The sauce it comes with is nice I would suggest to ask for extra because one is not enough... for me at least. But the point of a banh mi is the bread. Banh mi literally MEANS bread in Vietnamese. I also got the Spicy Chicken Curry bowl. I loooooove dipping my baguette into some curry but this was not it. After I moved back to Los Angeles, I gradually noticed how much I missed having regular access to my fave Bay Area bahn mi shop (Saigon Sandwich will always have a piece of my heart!). Their sardine bahn mi provides a tomato-based fish stew that I found uniquely satisfying. However, my favorite sandwich by far is their Friday special, which is a bahn mi made with lechón. I have never fancied myself a sandwich person, rice has always been my carb of choice. I have to admit... there is something magical about banh mi. Unfazed, I decided to order that as well as the lemongrass chicken banh mi, ca ri ga or spicy chicken curry, and their iced coffee. Lemongrass was delicious, although I would have a preferred a more distinct aromatic flavor. My boyfriend enjoyed the roast pork sandwich but noted that the flavor would be a lot better with the accompaniment of the crispy skin. The ca ri ga exceeded my expectations, I highly recommend ordering it with your sandwich so you can dip your sandwich into this deliciousness. It does have a little bit of a kick for those sensitive to spice, but it is so flavorful, hearty, and warming. Their coffee was on point. This is my far the worst Banh Mi I have eaten in my life. Period. Heading from Glendale and really didn't want to make the drive to Alhambra for sandwiches so looked on Yelp for somewhere within close range. This place popped with decent reviews so why not. This place is literally the only business on a busy drive through street. Had to look hard for this place behind a big tree. we missed it twice driving by. We got 1 pulled pork, 1 beef, and 2 of the roast pork sandwiches. The roast pork was available on a Saturday even though it said only for Fridays. In hindsight now, they are probably leftovers from the day before. The bread is about 10 inches long and the thinnest I've ever seen. The ingredients inside the sandwiches were skimpy!!! Barely anything inside the sandwiches at all!!! The roast pork sandwiches didn't even have any picked veggies. All of the sandwiches were Tasteless and some parts, even questionable whether the ingredients have gone bad. Worst of all, those 4 little crappy sandwiches robbed $50 out of me. Yes, those Sandwiches are $12 each! They are not even worth $5 if you ask me. I never felt like such a sucker for buying from this place. Trust me, don't go. The lemongrass tofu banh mi ($8) is one of the better ones in the area, with good bread and fresh ingredients. I found the tofu to be too spongy, and the lemongrass flavor doesn't come through at all, but the sandwich still comes together on a whole. That's a testament to the quality of its ingredients.
