Same Same, but mostly the same.
I've been wanting to try this place out since it opened a few months ago because it shares the same name as this 6000+ member facebook group dedicated to MEMES that I'm in. I even posted about this restaurant's opening on the group page because I thought it was hilarious and figured some of it's LA members would be interested. It ended up with hundreds of comments and likes and a bunch of us planned a meet-up that never actually ended up happening.
ANYWAY, I finally made it here for the very last day of DineLA. Same Same was the only restaurant that I could find that offered 4 courses and a drink (alcoholic or not) for the $29 dinner price. Sounds amazing and like a ridiculously great deal right? Well, turns out... not so much.
My favorite course ended up being the first course. I chose the pork and shrimp dumplings, but as expected from a 4-course Silver Lake meal price at $29, the portions were small. This course included only 2pcs of the tiny (but delicious) dumplings. However, I looked through photos and it seems like they typically come with 4pcs if ordered off of the everyday menu (I could be wrong). Which I honestly think is still kind of steep at a $9 appetizer price.
For the second course, I ordered the chicken laab. Only had one fire sign next to the course on the menu, so being Asian and accustomed to spicy foods, I didn't think twice about the spice before ordering. Wrong! So so wrongggg. I could barely eat it! It was so spicy that I had to down 2 glasses of water and then excuse myself to the bathroom to wipe the sweat off my face. Would definitely not order again or would ask for it VERY mild. I don't even want to think about how spicy the papaya salad would have been! My friend had the same (maybe slightly less-sweaty) reaction. The hard chunk of cabbage on the side was a weird presentation as well. Could have been wider thin pieces placed under the laab, but whatever.
For the third course, I ordered the khao soi (coconut curry noodle). This dish was pretty good, nothing really blew me away, but decent and flavorful. However, the portion was small. I would be pissed if I came here, ordered off the regular menu, and received a portion that small for my main entree.
Fourth course was the "mango ice cream with sweet sticky rice", which was actually just "one mango mochi over 3 spoonfuls of sticky rice".
The host and the servers were all really nice though. The restaurant itself was small but the decor was cute and lighting was dim & romantic. I guess this would be a good place to have a nice date if you weren't hungry. Which I personally have never been in that position, but I'm sure there are people out there scared to consume large amounts on dates. THOSE people would love Same Same. But I'm different. read more
