First off, I love dosas! I was excited to try Samburna since it is a decently rated south Indian/dosa place near our new neighborhood. So, we finally decided to get takeout last Friday and ordered 2 appetizers - samosas and medhu vadai and 2 entrees - Paneer dosa and Chicken Chettinad. I also got mango lassi. Everything was really spicy! Even though we specified "low" head on the chicken chettinad (nothing else gave an option to specify spice level). It was so spicy that it took away from the taste and left us with heartburn :(. I have had good vadas before without so much black pepper spice..the Vadais here had too much crush black pepper, leaving them tasting dry, bitter and too spicy. The samosa filling was also too spicy but the crust was good. Even the paneer filling was a bit spicy and sambar and red chutney was also too much for us. TLDR - If you like really spicy food, this might be worth a shot but there are other Indian restaurants that let you specify and respect the spice level. If you want good dosas that are not too spicy - go to Kathakali! read more

Diwali dinner variety and pricing was good for under $20. The place was packed. It was thali style on the banana leaf for diwali with a variety of veggies and a veg/non-veg option. I enjoy the flavors and most of the staff is friendly and nice, especially the waiter with the glasses and long hair. I didn't catch his name. My favorite out of everything was the Palak Daal, extremely good flavors and like what my grandmother makes in India. Only minor thing I noticed was the chicken 65 was cold when it was brought out. ONE DOWNFALL: Please STOP the wasteful use of bottles of water for all customers versus serving water in glasses, like all other restaurants. This is so bad for the environment and a horrible use of plastic. Only positive is Costco Kirkland Signature is profiting. I don't understand how this is cost effective. Due to this, I ordered hot water which came in a glass. The restaurant was also cold and we had to stay in our coats. Some of the best Indian food I've ever had! We got the egg curry, chicken masala, vegetable fried rice, and the Malabar parotta (bread). We had asked for naan but they didn't have any and the Malabar parotta ended up being 10x better! The egg curry and chicken masala were so flavorful even though we ordered 4/5 spice level. Went here with my family & I'm not quite sure if they were short stuff but it took almost 40 mins for our starters/appetizers to arrived to our table. Their bathrooms are so dirty. This restaurant needs major renovation & heck they need Chef Robert Irvine from restaurant: impossible to teach them a thing or two. Came here with my husband and a friend on a Wednesday night which turned out to be the Dosa night. The owner and the waiters were all very nice and the owner also offered us free coffee while we were waiting for a table. We ordered egg biriyani, sweet corn soup, gobi manchurian and two dosa platters. The egg biriyani was really good and so was the gobi manchurian. Soup wasn't too great. Dosas were also okay. I was really looking forward to trying this place. It was my first time and I tried ordering online but was having issues so I tried calling because I was getting groceries across the street then wanted to stop in and pick it up. They didn't answer multiple times so I did my shopping and attempted the online order again but was anxious because I wasn't sure if they were open because nobody was answering during open business hours and I hadn't seen that type of ordering platform so I got skeptical if it was legit. So I went in and it was pretty busy and unorganized and finally in placed my order with the host and paid including %15 tip even though I was carrying out and sat down to wait. A few moments later he comes to tel me that the kitchen is very busy and it will be an hour or more so if I can come back. Well having groceries in my car I felt I didn't have a choice and had already paid for the food, so I drove home put away my groceries and tried to wait it out. Obviously my family wasn't feeling great about the fact that it's now getting very late and still haven't eaten dinner. But I kept telling myself hopefully it'll be really great and worth the wait. Well I finally returned at 8pm when they said it would be ready ( mind you I ordered I vegetarian curry 1 chicken tikka masala and two breads.... So not a large order) then still not ready and so I went back outside to wait for longer. Finally one employee offered me something to drink and that was really the highlight of my experience. I finally got the food at 830 pm when I started the process around 5 pm. It was a lot more stress than I would like to have when getting dinner. I understood they were busy but the lack of clarity and organization was too chaotic and I did not feel really welcomed or appreciated as a new customer that loves Indian food and lives near by. I was really hoping it could be that easy and I am a very loyal customer to the businesses that really put the effort in. So now I get the food home I'm starved and I ordered the samburna vegetable Kurma and I was shocked because I was looking for vegetables because it's a vegetarian dish and the only vegetables were a few peas and carrots! I was so utterly disappointed after that whole experience. The curry flavor was tasty enough to pour over the rice but somehow it was still on the cold side. I looked down at my bowl of rice with curry gravy and a few peas and carrots and thought I paid $14 and expended all that energy and spent all day looking forward to trying that vegetable dish just to feel this sad. So very long story short, I will not be a returning customer based on my overall experience and the quality of service and food. But I'm glad I gave it a chance, I hadn't eaten out in a while because I follow a plant based diet and prefer home cooking now because that's the only way to really know what's going in your food. It helped me realize that it's much cheaper, tastier, less stressful and more fulfilling to make your own food and not relinquish your nutrition needs to restaurants or fast food.... This is a decent restaurant, very friendly staff, clean and mostly good food. Except for Baby corn pepper fry, it is their specialty dish, so we thought we will try it and Oh my God! Serving staff goes above and beyond and manages all the influx of customers and even serves complimentary items as the food takes so long to be served. Hmm... What happened to the quality here? Samburna used to be quite good, but now seems to have gone downhill... The mutton biriyani is full of bones and fat, jagged shards of cinnamon and made with ponni rice, rather than basmati (a short grain that can make the biriyani clump, and which doesn't have that same fragrance and consistency of long grain)... The curries were watery and many of the tiffin items (i.e. vadai, uthapam, etc) were either underdone or overcooked, no consistency. I don't know if it's because of the pandemic, but it seems as though the kitchen doesn't have the same oversight it once did, and the folks making the food aren't really knowledgeable on how its meant to be prepared; that once "authentic" flair this place had now seems to be gone, and everything is just kind of an approximation. Hope it gets better, but unfortunately, we likely won't go back. read more

Hit or miss case. If you are lucky, the food turns out to be great. I have had the best indo chinese and the worst food (bland) too. It all depends on the day and how clear you explain the waiter about your spice level preference. I have tried hakka noodles, fried rice, gobi manchurian. This is an amazing South Indian restaurant. I've been lucky to get some of the best all of my childhood and eaten in South India many times. So like to think I'm an authority on topic and had food in Chettinad where many of this restaraunt's food originated from. Things to get here is Mysore and Plain dosa. Can't go wrong and dosa is amazing! Samosas is solid alongside the meen kuzumba. My only complaint here and I wish they take this into consideration is why bone in fish. It's so annoying to take all the little bones in nearly all their fish menu items. Just do filets. It doesn't change the taste and people can enjoy the seafood. Mango lassi here is amazing, too! Great experience at Samburna tonight! First time being there. The wait staff (Ravi?) was very attentive and gave great recommendations. We ordered samosa, medhu Vadai (savory fried donut), malabar parotta, chicken vindaloo, malabar chicken and goat briyani. For drinks we had rose milk and Madras Coffee. The samosa and malabar parotta was to die for!!! So good. My only criticism would be the goat briyani was a little dry and the vindaloo had a bit more tomato paste then we cared for. But overall would come back to try other dishes! So far best food and service at an Indian restaurant we've had in the Bothell/Mill Creek area! Side note: didn't get a picture of the samosa, madras coffee, goat briyani or vindaloo...busy stuffing our faces! read more

Only if I could give less stars... Visited on (07/25) for dinner. Were told at the door that there was an hour wait. Honestly, the person at the door didnt seem interested for our business. Killed time roaming outside as there isn't much seating to wait. Went in at time, no water or silverware provided. Upon asking the water we got had something floating in it and still no silverware. No one was interested to take our order. Long wait for food with the drink missing despite asking it to be served sooner. Food is okay-ish. Check time - Manager couldn't find our order :) He had to go and confirm it with chef and reprinted somehow. Overall very bad experience. read more

On a night I was craving Indian food I googled nearby restaurants and was drawn to Samburna for its high rating. I was not let down! I've eaten here several times since then and everything I've had has been delicious. I regularly order their butter chicken (I'm pretty vanilla, sorry) but I also really enjoyed their biryani, mutton stew, and appam! They serve a bread that's not naan but different; I can never remember the name but it's a very flaky, buttery-tasting bread that's super yummy to eat with their curries! Seems like this place is almost always fully occupied with guests, which means you may have to wait to be served. Servers are very polite and always offer water to drink while you wait. It's quite a small place so I'm hoping with all this business they're getting they can expand soon as they truly deserve/necessitate it! While perusing the menu my first time here I noticed they were playing Christian music. It's all instrumental classical-sounding music so it's subtle to the ears, but what a blessing it was to hear! It was such a pleasant surprise and I can't help but be hopeful for the future of the restaurant and its owners. :) Blessings to the hard-working and consistently gracious staff there! Samburna has become one of my most favorite South Indian food places for sure. I just love their masala dosas and Biryanis. They have a small space in terms of the number of people coming to eat. It gets difficult to get a spot on a busy day but still manageable. I mostly like to order for take out meal instead of dine in so to avoid the rush hours. They have unlimited dosa nights on Wednesday which is pretty awesome but gets super crowded and you have to order everything together just to avoid delay in orders. It's good for one time experience. The only thing we I genuinely don't like is less quantity of Sambar. I love eating sambar and don't mind asking again, but I order for take out it becomes a problem. I would love to more sambar for sure other than that it's awesomeeeee!! read more
