We were seated right by the meat refrigerator which was interesting. There was so much to choose from on the menu. For drinks, I ordered the sake pairing. There are three flights and each one is either light, medium and strong sake drinks. Also, so hard, but got the Wagyu Yukke Tartare for an appetizer. The waiter brought all the ingredients or items out and made it for us to eat. Instead of salsa and chips you eat rice crackers or dried seaweed with the mixed avocado, scallions, and egg yolk. Ordered cheese fries on the side which came with two sauces. The portion size was pretty good. The entree we ordered was the 30 day Jyukusei Porterhouse Steak for two people. It's chef selected the 30 day dry aged beef with herb lemon butter, soy lemon onion sauce and wasabi cream sauce on the butter. The sauce went well with the steak and it was so juicy. The porterhouse came with some delicious sauces which I'd never seen before! Wasabi cream and a sweet soy onion. We were really excited about having both sushi + steak, a combo that is actually a bit hard to find especially in a more casual setting. Unfortunately I don't think we picked the right things off the menu and the meal felt pretty underwhelming for us. I can definitely see the potential, but maybe we just went a bit overboard with the wagyu. It was also pricey AF which really made us question whether this was all worth it. Starting off with the good - the Kaisou Salad ($16), Salmon Roll ($18), and Yellowtail Roll ($21) were all great. Wonderfully refreshing on a hot summer day. (We dined outside in late July) The mediocre - french fries ($10) and uni & wagyu handroll ($32). Now hear me out - these were actually delicious, but worth splurging on...? Meh, not really. The fries were added knowing that we'd still be hungry, and the hand rolls would've been more appreciated if we didn't order the wagyu steak as our main. And that leads me to: Our mistake - ordering the 8 oz Japanese Prime Wagyu Steak which was a whopping $150 for 5 tiny slices. If we didn't order this, I wouldn't really have a problem with the Uni & Wagyu handroll (mentioned above) but getting both wagyu items was really just overkill and unnecessary. This $150 dish didn't taste all that special, and I wish we went with the Porterhouse instead. Hell, even the NY strip steak maybe. Should've just stuck to exactly what we were looking for (steak & sushi) without getting too fancy with it. Between only 2 people, the total bill (with tax & tip) came out to over $300 and even after finishing all our food, one of us had to go grab some pizza afterwards... Also a note about the service: I reserved through Yelp and I did specify that I wanted to sit inside, assuming that there would be AC. Upon arrival, I saw that all the windows and doors were wide open, their AC out of service apparently. We kindly asked if we could sit outside instead since there was barely any airflow inside, but the hostess said no. After asking our server the same question, he actually got us a table on the street - so shoutout to him! The restaurant itself is cozy & intimate - perfect for date night or small groups. My boyfriend and I ordered the fried nasu & maitake mushrooms to start, and the hefty portions surprised us. There's a generous amount of eggplant & maitake mushrooms, paired with a rich dashi broth - this was tasty! For our entrees, we shared the uni filet mignon steak (you already know we HAD to, with all of the pictures on yelp!), the dry aged new york strip, & fries. This is perhaps just where I was unable to appreciate the flavors. The uni & filet mignon steak was cooked perfectly & it was good.. but very quickly became too rich and salty. The steak is topped with seaweed, uni, ikura, and a kombu sauce, all of which added a little TOO much briny goodness. I can maybe see how others would enjoy the flavor profile, but it wasn't my thing. The good news is - the uni is of superb quality & I discovered I like uni through this experience! We actually preferred the dry aged steak, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare & paired with a lemon herb butter and wasabi cream on the side. Fries are exactly as expected - delicious! I also ordered a spicy scallion ponzu sauce on the side. While the sauce delivered on the spicy end, I struggled to taste the ponzu, as it had an overpowering sesame oil taste. As for drinks, I really enjoyed the passion fizz, which was a perfect blend of sweetness & tartness! Service was EXCELLENT - 5 stars for service, without a question! We were recommended by our friends to try Salt+Charcoal but the way they grilled the porterhouse steak wasn't our type at all. When the staff served our porterhouse, we were impressed by the perfect pink color from the slices. However, when we had our first bite, all four of us were shocked by how bitter it is and wondered if it's how it is supposed to taste like. We also had their Crunchy Oyster and seasonal dish Uni Roll which were decent. I'm gonna say it. I don't care. Peter Luger is not the best steakhouse in Williamsburg. It hasn't been for awhile. It's just the name. Salt + Charcoal is what you want. I've been here three times now, with my last being my favorite. This time I sat in their intimate and literally cool, wine cellar. This seems like a great spot for a large party or group. You know, for special occasions. Their cocktail, beer, and wine selection are top notch. Pair accordingly. This is the place to do that. I love their tuna tartar. It's not pretty, but damn it's good. While you only get two pieces for the crunchy oyster, its delicious. The salmon roll is my favorite of the rolls there. I can't recommend enough though, the porterhouse for two. It's phenomenal. I've wanted to come to Salt + Charcoal for a while now and today I finally booked a reservation for 1 PM. I ordered the uni filet mignon, wagyu yukke tartare, and Atlantic salmon. The waiter gave us lotus root chips before starting the meal. Everything came out in 45 minutes. The uni filet mignon was delicious. The portion size of this dish was huge. The uni layered on top of the filet mignon was very fresh. Filet mignon itself was tender and juicy. The steak itself was well done. The waiter didn't ask how I wanted my steak so, I'm guessing it's just how the chef cooks it. I prefer my steaks medium rare but, it's still good. Umami kombu sauce has a similar taste to seaweed. It went very well with the dish. My favorite dish of the day was wagyu yukke tartare. It just melts in your mouth. The waiter sets everything on a plate then mixes the ingredients in a bowl in front of you. You get to decide if you want to eat it as a hand roll or straight up wagyu tartare from the spoon. The last dish was the Atlantic salmon. Instead of frying the salmon with the skin to make a crunch, The sesame seed was a substitute for it. The teriyaki sauce went very well with the salmon. Run don't walk to this fine Japanese steakhouse. Absolutely incredible experience: started off with a lychee martini which had a kick to it, but with just the right amount of sweetness. Honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed the grilled octopus. We tried out the wagyu roll as well, which I'd recommend so long as you're comfortable with consuming raw meat/fish. Really lovely texture and the sides of wasabi and ginger are of wonderful quality. We went for the porterhouse for two, medium rare, paired with the grilled veggies. Honestly could've gone more medium, but I didn't mind and the staff was INCREDIBLY gracious. If something is not cooked to your liking, they invite you to send it back. Salt & Charcoal has easily become one of my favorite dining experiences! I made a reservation through yelp for a 7PM birthday dinner for indoor dining for my bf and I. Upon arrival, they take your temperature and ask for some information in regards to covid contact tracing. It was a pretty seamless process and we got seated right away afterwards. We got seated at a small table with a plastic divider in between the table next to us. The inside of the restaurant is smaller than I imagined but it still felt very cozy and intimate, with dim lighting and candles. For drinks, my bf got the pineapple express and I got a passion fizz - both were good. For starters, we ordered the Uni & Wagyu Beef Roll, Crunchy Oyster, and Salmon Roll. I especially liked how the food was presented to us when it got brought to the table. The Uni & Wagyu beef roll was very interesting and delicious all in one bite. The uni was fresh and the shiso leaf gave it the extra touch in flavor. The crunchy oyster was very juicy and well worth. As for the salmon roll, it was super refreshing and different from other salmon rolls I've had. Our main entree was the 50 Day Jyukusei Porterhouse Steak for 2 (36 oz, $53 pp). We chose to have it cooked medium rare and it was perfect. It was extremely tender and the portion was bigger than I expected! It is also on a bed of watercress and that gave it the crunchy texture the dish needed. They also give you wasabi cream and this honey, soy lemon sauce on the side. It was yummy but we both didn't use too much of the sauces, since a good steak doesn't need sauce. We were both so full after eating the porterhouse. The service was wonderful -- our waiter always checked in with us, the table got cleaned after we finished each dish, and the food came out at the right pace. There is a cake fee of $3.50pp but they helped us cut the Napoleon cake I brought in perfectly and it is a hard cake to cut! 10/10 would come back again for a special occasion or when I want to splurge. We went there on Sunday and we were able to find a parking spot on the street near by. Food was amazing!! We ordered Uni steak and lamb chops as main dishes, and wagyu tartar and French fries as appetizers. I never thought uni and steak would go well together. Steak was juicy and flavorful, and uni was so fresh! Although Uni steak seems to be Salt & Charcoal's signature menu, my husband loved lamb chops. The meat was so soft and tender. French fries was ok. (tasted like regular fries) The waiting time was a bit long - we waited about 30 minutes to get the main dishes after having an appetizer. But it was worth the wait! Overall, I was satisfied with the taste but did think the price was pretty expensive. I recommend this place to people who love fresh uni and steak, and want to try something different. Amazing. As of today 5.21.22 this is my fourth time here this month. I've fallen in love with this place and find myself thinking about the food when I'm away. The Wagyu here is so soft and mouth watering. I've had it each time i visited and haven't been disappointed. I get it medium rare and it has been cooked perfectly each time. The first time i came here was by accident. My cousin and i wanted to grab oysters nearby but we were quoted a 45 min wait. We decided to walk around and find somewhere cute for drinks. I used to work nearby and remembered Salt and Charcoal being a place i had always wanted to try but at the time i was not eating red meat. We came by and they were all booked for tables but said we'd be able to be at the bar. Long story short we ended up staying here for a majority of our night. I love the bartenders here...they give great recommendations and even make me my own off the menu cocktail. The last time i was here, Prae was our server. She was so sweet and cute, also incredibly knowledgeable. We wanted to try a different kind of Wagyu since we always try the specials and the tasting special was sold out. The Charcoal Grilled Edamame was the tastiest I have ever noshed on, we ordered two. Crab Cakes appetizer was hearty. Evening's special Cod had a different and interesting presentation particularly the charred crisp of the skin. The best meal I've had this year. I got the A5 wagyu listed on their "specials" menu. The steak was incredible - the cook was spectacular, it melted in my mouth, and though it came with 4 seasonings (salt, garlic chips, wasabi, and a pepper mix), it was perfect on its own. I got the one day baked onion as a side. I enjoyed it. It was sweet and complemented the steak nicely. For appetizers we got edamame and both the wagyu and tuna tartar (not pictured), which our waitress prepared for us at the table. The first time we dined there was pre-Covid and the portions were HUGE! Last week we dined there, and the portions were tiny. I understand that inflation is high, but this is a bit ridiculous. COVID-19 outdoor dining: I would have given Salt+Charcoal 5 stars if they had honored my special request for a birthday dinner (had done something special for it) and seated us under the tent. I had to ask the waiter 3x to look at my special request considering this was a birthday dinner and we didn't want to be seated next to a fire hydrant. The waiters all had masks and had a separate blocked off entrance for the bathrooms. I felt safe! Other than that, the service and food was AMAZING. This is one of the best restaurants I had ever been to! All the flavors are perfect, including the drinks. I really liked my lychee martini and the pineapple express drink was good too, but it wasn't as strong. For appetizers, we shared the salmon roll with wasabi on the side and beef wagyu tartar. Just got back from this cute spot in Williamsburg for a nice evening out. Ordered the NY strip (14oz) , market fish which was a whole branzino, and side of shishito peppers. Overall, delicious meal and would recommend for a nice date or a group dinner. Staff was nice and attentive to refilling our glass. The branzino was moist and flavorful. Shishito pepper was Amazing! It was definitely salted & charcoaled; had a great smoky flavor. NY strip was done as requested medium well, however the "side" of watercress was bland. Not sure if it was meant as a garnish or actually meant as a side salad. Considering the steak was still, a simple dressing drizzled over the watercress would've sealed the deal for me. The restaurant ambiance was very nice. The staffs were very attentive. My boyfriend made reservations for 7:30 pm for the booth and we came early. As we were seated at the bar the bartender was nice and he explained to us about the menu. He was also very informative about what taste would taste phenomenal in our wagyu experience. He also inform us of the texture of the wagyu we were expecting. He has empathized that Japanese wagyu has a nice distinctive taste in different cuts. When we were seated our server was marvelous he took care of us. While we were eating and enjoying our meal we encounter a gust of random wind. It was quite cold and he helped us make sure we were comfortable and tried to figure out where the random wind was coming from. For each dish, we ordered he would explain to us how to eat it and what tasted best. We order the... Uni & Wagyu Beef Roll (5/5): The way to eat this properly was to wrap the seaweed with the whole sea urchin, wagyu beef, shiso, and scallion all together and put the entire thing in your mouth. Everything complemented well together. Great quality of uni and wagyu. Japanese Wagyu Truffle Roll (5/5): THIS IS THE MOST HANDS DOWN AND MUST GET. The wagyu roll was delicious and marvelous. Yellowtail Sashimi (4.5/5): Usually yellowtail was fatty and oily and hard to devour. My boyfriend savored every piece that was given in the dish. He loved how each piece was just right for him where it was not too fatty and oily. Even the wasabi was true wasabi, it wasn't the paste or hard looking one. Miso Soup (3.5/5): The miso soup did not wow us, usually there were small bites of tofu instead it was smoked fried tofu with wakame and scallion. It was salty as well. French fries with Truffle oil (3.5/5): The texture of the french fries was crunchy and crispy. It also had a couple of random sweet potato fries. The French fries were quite overly salty. Japanese Waygu Tasting Trio (12oz) (5/5): We asked for the best perfect medium rare the chief could do. It came out perfectly charcoaled with shiny buttery and juicy not dry at all. There were three portions of waygu of 5 pieces. The bartender, in the beginning, explain to us that it was the cuts of wagyu Filet Mignon, waygu top round, and primal wagyu cut. The fattiest from right to left. Different cuts tasted different with fat. It is supposed to be chewy for those who are new to wagyu. Their condiments im not sure what it was but it was green along with salt and tasted well with the wagyu. Salmon Roll (3.5/5): The salmon was not bright orange it had a little dark color. The taste of quite interesting, the flavor was heavy because of the mayo and avocado. I thought the mayo was a ranch. I feel like it would taste better with spicy mayo. I was looking for a steakhouse to take my friend for a birthday dinner. Yelp had this place on the list of best steakhouses in bk. Made reservations a few weeks ago for 9pm. The waitress tells us "we are short staffed so it'll be about a 30 minute wait for the food." Ok, no problem. They bring out drinks. The lychee martini was very good. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one. We wait and wait. There's a table of 4 next to us and I can tell they are starting to become very agitated, that group eventually asks for the check so they can leave but they've eaten nothing. The check presented to them actually had an appetizer which they never received and they had to tell the waitress to take it off. It's now about 10pm and they said they had been there since 8! They were also there to celebrate a birthday. Around 10:15 we ask how much longer. We are told 20 minutes, a lie. Absolutely no food has come out the kitchen and no one in the restaurant is eating. And they have the absolute nerve to still seat people and take their orders knowing full well food was not being made. Why! I eventually call another restaurant to see if they could seat us. They call me back and say yes. I paid for the drinks and ran as quickly as I could out of there. On the way out I see the same people sitting down as when we first walked in, still sitting, still without food. Everyone was still sitting in the restaurant waiting for their food. A restaurant of this caliber I expected so much more. They should be embarrassed. The staff did nothing to communicate. Didn't offer the patrons anything. Stopped by for solo for brunch last weekend and enjoyed a great meal. Got seated quickly by the Server whom was friendly and helpful. I really wanted to try the wagyu burger which did not disappoint. Ordered it medium well, came out juicy and flavorful. Also tried the crunchy oyster which were really good. Lastly took an order of lamb chops home which were pretty damn good as well. Exercise high caution when reserving ahead at this restaurant. You don't know where you will be seated, and they do not care. Booked 10+ days in advance for a special occasion. Walked in excited, the interior looked amazing. Low and behold, we end up getting seated not in the indoor/outdoor space, but even further, in the sidewalk street seating. That's with a booking 10+ days out. Extremely disappointed, whether it's the restaurant or the Yelp reservation system you gotta let people know if it's indoor or outdoor. I would've taken my business elsewhere if I had known I'd be dining outside. Asked to be seated inside or at the bar, they turned us down. Food/drinks wise: recommend the porterhouse. The beer was warm. The tuna roll was a California roll they charged $18 for with a little tuna on top. TLDR: Their rez system doesn't indicate indoor or outdoor so you will be bound to be disappointed like us. Go to another steakhouse. read more

30 day japanese steak: wonderful, priced well, you can taste the spot on seasoning and bit of gamey ageness. Cannot wait to try their other steak offerings. Wagyu truffle roll: delectable. Rice a bit gummy but the heavy pouring of shallots really made a difference and what could even go wrong when topped w wagyu? Crispy oysters: beautiful presentation and good bit of micro greens covering the perfectly breaded fried morsel of oyster. This is very good but small and overpriced. Fries: amazing and bottomless. Drinks: Fig it out and old Brooklyn whisky cocktails were done so well and strong. Kudos! Long chat w friendliest. Bartender Sandro about drinks and cool bars. That said, ambiance was nice, decor nice but initial reception is a bit lacking as though we'd trampled into the St Regis without reservations. And if we did? I have been wanting to go to Salt + Charcoal for a few years and I finally got to go! The food was to die for, albeit on the expensive side. Totally worth it though, as I would gladly come back. To start, we ordered: -Uni and wagyu beef roll (wrapped in seaweed with shiso and scallions): amazing and melts in your mouth; must get! I had a bite with just the wagyu and then another bite with everything so I was able to get the mouth feel of both textures and the different flavors -Tuna tartare (with avocado, scallions, seaweed, tosa soy, and sesame oil): this was surprisingly really tasty! We were debating between this and wagyu tartare but ultimately decided on tuna since we were already going to order the fillet. No regrets. As a main dish, of course we ordered the uni filet mignon. It's basically a layer of uni (a LOT of uni), then a layer of ikura (salmon roe) and scallions, all placed on top of a filet mignon, that is served on a bed of watercress with a kombu sauce and sesame powder dusted all around the plate. Delicious and such a highlight! The give you this salt in a box and caramelized onion sauce as well to go with the meat. We tried various ways of eating the filet, such as meat only, filet with uni, filet with uni and ikura and salt, filet with uni and onion sauce, etc, you get the picture. The meat was tender and juicy all on its own. Our filet ended up being a bit medium rare towards the outer ends but rare in the middle so it was like the best of both worlds. The perfect bite was everything in one scoop, like a meat hors d'oeuvres. I'm salivating thinking of this. As a side, we ordered the cheese fries. These were good and as expected. A lot of melty cheese over shoestring fries. Service was fairly attentive, although one gripe - we were not brought out lotus chips at all. We didn't realize it until towards the end of our meal when we saw one of the servers switching out the first bowl for a SECOND bowl of it to the table next to ours. That was a bit disappointing. Added to the fact that when we first ordered the uni filet, the server actually reiterated the price to "make sure" that's what we wanted (for reference, market price was $160). While I can completely understand that sometimes they want patrons to be aware of costs, I also feel a little put off by it because we would have asked if we weren't sure. Salt + Charcoal has been on my list all year and I'm so happy I finally found an occasion to come. They are definitely more on the expensive side but honestly, I think it was so worth it and I would probably come back in the future to try more from their menu. We had the uni & wagyu beef rolls, lamb chops, dry aged NY strip steak and a side of the one day baked onion for two people. The uni and wagyu beef rolls were really rich and decadent but the only thing we didn't like was the shiso leaf in there. It really took away from the uni and wagyu flavors and the uni overpowered the wagyu a little as well. May want to try the wagyu tartare instead next time! The lamb chops were extremely tender and cooked to absolute perfection. I also loved the texture of the mille fuille potatoes, something I've never tried before! The NY strip was a little more tough but seasoned well with a very deep flavor to it. The one day baked onion was interestingly sweet and vinegar-y, but we weren't huge fans. The servers and host were all extremely polite and attentive. I didn't feel overwhelmed at all yet someone was always available if needed. When I made my reservation, I made note that it was my boyfriend's birthday and they came out with a nice dessert surprise with black sesame and matcha ice cream. Had a high expectation, but very disappointed. 30 Day Jyukusei New York Steak and Wagyu was one of worst I've had. Outside was burnt and we could not chew the steak because it was too chewy. Felt chewing a rubber. Could not swallow so we had to throw away. Even $5 steak from grocery taste better and edible. Other dishes were also disappointing. This restaurant has been on our "go to" list for a while and we finally got to enjoy dinner here. We loved the atmosphere and decor. The Maitre d was so nice and professional! He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The food and drinks were outstanding. For appetizer, we recommend the shrimp crunch and the yuzu wedge salad. As for the entrees, we recommend the wagu new york strip. The sauces that are served with it are delicious and add a nice touch. You also can't forget the sides- the cheese fries and broccoli were amazing! Can you believe we had room dessert after alllll of that food!! I was so full but couldn't resist the apple pie with ice cream. I didn't regret it! LOL!! My advice is to go as soon as you can and enjoy!! read more

Came here for lunch on a saturday shortly after they opened. The server was very nice. They were not doing cocktails, only beer and wine, but we were doing just water anyway. The crunchy oyster starter was ok, the sauce that came with it was very good. The wagyu tartare was very good and made at the table. For mains we got the Steak sandwich, which had a bigger slab of butter on it then there was steak. The burger was alright, but the roll was completely soggy, and the top part of the bun was cold. From the rating and other reviews this was not what we expected at all. Maybe we will try it again in the future for dinner. read more
