Meh. The best part of this meal was the free chips and salsa, the fact that my margarita was only $5 and our sweet, sweet waiter. Like I said, The chips and salsa was great, obviously homemade, but not an accurate indication of how the food was going to be. We ordered nachos and they were awful. Just awful. The beef was seasoned in a way that was just weird. It did not taste good. AND they came with nacho cheese sauce.....like the kind you get at the movie theatre. We were highly disappointed that an "authentic" mexican restaurant would prepare them this way. They were so bad we ended p sending them back. Our waiter, who's name I can't remember, was VERY apologetic and handled the situation appropriately. When our entree's got there, they were just kind of a let down. This use to be one of my favorite restaurants to bring my friends and family until my last visit on February 16th. I brought my friends who were visiting from Texas where the Mexican food is a little more authentic. One of my friends was not thrilled about the ingredients in her burrito and asked the owner/waiter if he would wrap it up to go. I encouraged her to let him know when he returned that it is not what she expected and when she did, all hell broke loose. He ranted and raved at her accusing her of saying his food was no good. To make a long story short, when I went to pay the bill, I let him know that I was a frequent customer and that he just embarrassed me in front of my company. Again, he went off the deep end and said he didn't care and she was wrong. Needless to say, I will never return there. If you decide to try this restaurant after reading this review, don't tell him you don't like your order. read more

I have to be honest. Food wise this place is a b+. Service wise the service gets TEN stars. My friend recommended a place a half hour from our Hilton hotel. But we chose this restauraunt. Our waitress was Elena. If you go here, this is the person you want to ask for. I was the Bar manager at the York Harbor Inn in York Harbor, ME. It is a tourist town. If Elena worked there she would be making $200 to $300 per night. She bartends and waits tables. While i enjoyed this restaurant, especially the service, I hope Elena realizes her true potential and moves on to a place where she could be making $50k to 100k a year. Thank you Elena!!! Just an update... this restaurant continues to serve up great food... have tried two other similar restaurants and they just do not compare... I honestly cannot understand why many people write something bad about this restaurant. Ok, the decor is not great... ok, the location isn't perfect. But, why do you go to a restaurant in the first place? You go to enjoy the excellent food which this place has. If you want great decor stay home. It sits in a strip mall, but manages to rise above that. The interior is pretty standard tex-mex decor, but the food is very solid. Free chips and salsa when you walk in are a nice touch. Staff is very friendly, and the food is good, though mildly over priced. The tamales and quesadillas are my favorites. Beware, service here is very very slow. read more

We are supposed to leave a restaurant smiling - we didn't do that after leaving Salsa. First, the service was slow and inattentive, even though there was only one other table in use. Second, the food wasn't "bad" but most folks could do better at home! The fajita salad, in spite of its awesome tortilla bowl could have easily come out of a grocery store bag of iceberg mix, except for the few avocado strips that had been added. The "fajitas" in the salad were... well, maybe 5-6 skimpy little strips of chicken breast. :-( As for the fajitas - what I ordered - have you ever heard of a "child's portion?" I have had fajitas all around the country and never ever had a smaller serving. Considering that if I had wanted guacamole with it, it would have been an extra charge, I skipped that. There was, maybe, a tablespoon of sour cream... 2-3 tablespoons of shredded lettuce, and there were two tiny strips of bell pepper and some sizzling onions. It was served with two small but hot tortillas - that I had to wait a few minutes for before the server brought them to the table. Trying to pace myself, I didn't overload my 'wraps.' After waiting too long for the server to come by (she was doing something behind the bar but made eye contact with me a few times), I asked for a couple more tortillas. (Looking at the bill later, I was surprised that there was an extra charge for these.) Moving to the desert, my friend and I split a flan - it was not bad at all.... Will we return? Not likely, it was our first and probably last visit. read more

I am originally from Arizona and have been searching since I moved to NY for edible mexican food. (I imagine that it's probably similar to a New Yorkers search for pizza on the west coast) So far I had been disappointed by every place we had tried. We ordered guacamole - insanely good, tons of garlic and great flavor. I ordered the pork carnitas and boyfriend got the salsa ranchero steak. Both were so incredibly yum yum. Restaurant was clean and service was really speedy and friendly, we were in and out in under an hour. This is considering the fact that they only had one server for the entire restaurant (It wasn't busy, but certainly steady) Bottom line: Ignore these other grumpy reviewers and give it a try! ~ Cafe Maya doesn't even compare!! Initially, service was ok and the guac was good for the appetizer. We ordered a taco salad and a steak fajita salad. Both meats tasted and smelled like they were old or just reheated. We expressed our concerns and apologized for not being able to eat it (not picky eaters). Never once did the waitress apologize or ask if we wanted to try something different. She brought a raw piece of steak to our table to show us it wasn't old, and then just quietly told us the manager took them off of our check-again not apologizing. Not what I was expecting from what I had read in the previous reviews. I would say this is maybe a step up from taco bell. The service was good and the waitress was very friendly and observant. She suggested the chicken quesadilla for an appetizer so we got it. It was about the same thing I could make in my own kitchen. Pretty sure they used frozen chicken that wasn't cooked all the way through. Once we got our meals it didn't get much better. The rice was yellow. No visible seasonings- very bland. I got the combination with a chicken enchilada and chicken flauta. The flauta was delicious. The chicken was shredded and seemed to be fresher then that in the quesadilla. The enchilada was far less delicious with sauce that was not close to being made In house and probably the same as taco bell uses. This is my FAVORITE Mexican Restaurant in the Hudson Valley. The cuisine is AUTHENTIC MEXICAN. It's an eat in restaurant or take out. I happen to be gluten free and they were very accommodating. They will use 100 percent corn tortillas for anything you want made to order fresh! Nice cozy booths are available for seating, as well as larger tables to accommodate larger groups. Casual dress and family friendly environment. If your on a budget, not to worry. Salsa Restaurant is very affordable. If I could give this restaurant a lower score, I would. My friends and I dined at this restaurant today and were verbally accosted and harassed by the owner. One friend ordered the nachos, which came with liquid cheese (the kind you find at a gas station or a baseball game) rather than shredded cheese. She did not eat any of the nachos, and informed our server that she no longer wanted the meal. He asked if she'd prefer a replacement dish, but at this point everyone else had finished their meals, so we asked for the check. The check came, and the waiter had removed the nachos from the check. It was at this point that the owner of the establishment came up to our table and yelled at us, asking why we thought we didn't have to pay for the nachos. We explained to her that the nachos had been taken off our bill. We told her the cheese was not what we had expected, and since the nachos were covered in it, there was no way to eat around it. She then told us that we should have read the menu (which did not state what kind of cheese was used on the nachos) and asked more questions about the meal. The manager became belligerent, saying she had to throw away a whole plate of nachos because we didn't want them. She then told us to never come to the restaurant again and walked away, cursing at us and calling us names. We were shocked that this was how the manager treated a customer who was not satisfied with their meal. Our waiter came over and apologized for her behavior, but the damage was done. When he went to the kitchen, we could hear the manager yelling at him for taking the nachos off of the check. We felt bad for our waiter, who obviously knew that his manager was in the wrong. My friends and I were treated with extreme rudeness and disrespect and when we later called to inquire as to why we were treated as such, the manager claimed we were teenagers trying to start trouble. We're all women in our twenties, but why would it matter if we had been teenagers? That is still not the proper way to treat a customer, especially one who was unsatisfied with their meal. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, simply due to the way we were treated by management. If anyone is looking for a good Mexican restaurant close to here, try Mole Mole, which is a few miles up route 9, across from Marist College or Cafe Maya, in nearby Wappingers Falls. Both have much better, more authentic Mexican food, and certainly better customer service (though it isn't hard to beat Salsa in that department). One final thought: What self respecting Mexican restaurant serves nachos with cheese that comes out of a can? If my friend had wanted to eat that, she would have gone to the Mobil station next door and gotten her meal from there. read more

LOVE this food. I had the pollo asado twice when I went there. Their salsa is incredible and this is coming from a non-salsa lover. So fresh and homemade. The service is okay. The decor, like the Chinese take out pictures of food, is tacky. There are large poster board cut outs of people which is a bit tacky as well. This is a modest, family-run restaurant where the owners try to learn the customers' names and preferences. The food is fresh, delicious and authentic and prepared from family recipes. But if you have American tastes you won't be disappointed. The menu offers plenty of: tacos, enchiladas and burritos, all served with rice and a choice of black or refried beans. You can order simple salads to accompany your meal or homemade soups. I enjoyed discovering a traditional Mexican chicken soup, which was comforting and perfect on a cold day. I also tried a Mexican soda and was delighted with the fruit flavor. The Margaritas are the best I have ever tasted. They even offer chicken nuggets for the kids. Love this place. The food is authentic and fresh. They have a lot of seasonal/special dishes that aren't on the menu from time to time so chat up the owners for the best plates. Not too expensive and high quality Mexican food. The owners are always there to greet you individually and to make sure the meal is perfect.
