LOCATION: This is a pleasant restaurant in a high traffic area of a dying mall. You'll find it in what used to be T.J. Maxx, Plaza this is the same plaza. That house is Midas, and Millspaugh furniture. The restaurant is actually larger than it looks from the outside with a pleasant patio space that was well-kept. it's what you expect of a Mexican restaurant: the paint, palette, tile, flooring, and artwork or appropriate and pleasant. This is not a fancy place still bring the kids. Although I was not there to drink, it does seem like they have a pretty big variety of tequila so specialty cocktails should be no problem. THE MENU: as always, before taking a seat, I explained to the host that I have food allergies and asked if it could be accommodated. He said, of course, and I was seated at a very clean table. The selection is very straightforward with an added option of a three-course meal. $21 got me a small appetizer, small entrée, and a dessert. Perfect for a lunch, or someone who does not have an enormous appetite, as my case. They were able to accommodate my food allergy without serving me a salad. You may be laughing, but this is usually my option. I was grateful for the opportunity to have some Mexican food prepared at a nice little place.RECOMMENDED: FLAN. The flan was creamy and rich. I walked in and the guy was so rude saying "we're closed didn't you see the sign" the sign said "closed Monday" it was Thursday and I told him the door was also unlocked and he said the "open sign isn't on can't you see" and basically mushed me any my 8 month old out the door even tho we were already leaving. read more

My partner and I are Salsa regulars - and for a good reason. Prices are very reasonable with big portions. The burritos are MASSIVE and the quantity is not trying to make up for anything... Genuinely, this is the best Mexican food that you can find in the Hudson Valley. The owner is incredibly kind and welcoming - service is great. After growing up in the South West (Arizona), where really good, authentic, Mexican food is readily available, I have to tell you that the quality, portions, prices and killer margaritas greatly surprised me. Sadly, my final time at this place. Food has declined a bit and service is abysmal. Walked in for lunch, place was empty. Not one other person. Showed the waitress our Restaurant.com coupon up front as we sat down. She says ok. We order, food comes. Chips and salsa very good, tasty, has a nice kick too it - a bit on the watery side. Husband had a veggie chimichanga, which he said was just ok. My burrito which was supposed to have rice, beans, pork, peppers was 70% rice, 30% pork (which was tasty). I found 2 pieces of pepper and 2 small peas, maybe those were the beans? It was certainly filling, but rather unremarkable. No lettuce or tomato on the side. No salsa, sauce. Nada. And it came out wrapped in foil on a plate, which seemed odd bc we were dining in. Here's where the issue arises. We try to pay and use the coupon. Waitress says she needs to call the manager. Manager makes us wait a good 10 minutes. I'm getting impatient. I stand up and look toward the back. I hear the waitress and someone in the kitchen taking turns calling her name. This happens at least three more times. At this point I'm seriously thinking of walking out. She finally comes out and says she won't accept the coupon. This is AFTER we showed it earlier and AFTER we have eaten. First she says she won't take an electronic coupon, it has to be printed (which isn't the case). Then she changes her story, and says she doesn't accept them at all anymore and is no longer in the program. Then announced that her prices are already low enough. A quick search on the coupon website proved this to be false bc they are still listed as a participating restaurant. I don't have an issue with paying full price- but the way they handled it was very rude and unprofessional. This place is my go to Mexican restaurant! Free chips & salsa too start off a yummy and affordable meal. I always get the Al Pastor (pineapple pork) tacos. They have very friendly waitstaff and lots of different flavored margaritas (peach, strawberry, lime). My only comment would be that they could bump up the heat/spicyness factor. When we asked for some hot sauce, I was relieved they gave, what seemed to be, chipotle in adobo. Another good thing ab this place is their location. Salsa Restaurant in Poughkeepsie is a mediocre local cuisine that specializes in Mexican fare, obviously, and I was excited to try it out years ago when they first opened. Living within walking distance to salsa it's always fun to walk up have some food, grab some drinks and then walk back. However, most times I've been to Salsa, I give it the benefit of the doubt because I'm a friendly neighbor and want to support the business. The food is pretty good when compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area, but in all honesty it's not my favorite. I've been here for lunch, I've been here for dinner, and also on Cinco de Mayo, one of their busiest days of the year. There are two major consistencies with each of my many trips: higher prices than most Mexican places, and inadequate service. I can deal with higher prices because it's easy for me just to walk home and I don't have to worry about drinking and driving. However, there's no excuse for consistent bad service (train the staff and get better over time). Even when there's just a handful of people in the restaurant, there is little attentiveness from the waitresses, who always take an unacceptably long time to grab us drinks, get the food, and pay the check. Every time we go, my fiancée and I wonder if the service was acceptable enough for us to return, and unfortunately after our most recent visit, we will not be returning. We walked in to Salsa last week, and eventually were greeted and told to sit in any open booth we wanted. The place was noisy from the TV behind the bar, blasting the 7:30pm airing of Wheel of Fortune. The booth was sticky and the menus as well. On Cinco de Mayo, I remembered that their beer tap system was no longer in use (as I found out when I ordered a draft beer, but was told it no longer operated), yet even on this visit, their draft beer list still remained on the menu. Long story longer, the waitresses were inattentive, clearing tables, gabbing at the bar with the manager, and didn't even come to our table once. It was a full 12 minutes we waited without acknowledgement, before we decided to get up and leave. The manager, ignorantly and amiably, said good-bye to us on our way out. I dined here with a friend for lunch today. It was a little busy and only one waitress was on board. She was very apologetic and did her best to attend to all the tables. It surely was no fault of hers that she had no assistance. The decor is all right- nothing special, but nice enough. It is a little odd that they have on display illuminated photos of the some of the available dishes, which are framed and mounted above the bar counter, much like you see on display in a Chinese take-out place. I found this kind of odd..... I found the salsa to be mediocre at best. I liked the fresh, home-made tortilla chips and the fact that this restaurant offers diners authentic, Mexican style tacos, which are simply served on soft corn tortillas, with nothing more than savory, spicy, tender meats (various kinds), and freshly chopped onions & cilantro. Those are traditional style. I've previously enjoyed them in Mexico while on vacation, and one can find them around here only in the most authentically run Mexican establishments or vendors. The food was all right- no serious complaints here. I wouldn't voluntarily go there again, though, or make the suggestion to go back with a friend or a group. Warm greeting by the Chef, as I walked in for dinner after getting a personal recommendation to try this place. Service was slightly slow as was the business so it didn't make sense. But after ordering my obligatory house margarita ($5.00) (which is quite good - BTW), I had to ASK about chips and salsa. OMG. Seriously? Now, I like to consider myself a foodie, and I adore Mexican food, but so many places miss the boat, because the are afraid to be bold with their flavors, and Salsa Restaurant lived up to this bland description. The red sauce on the enchilada resembled terrible ketchup. The taco was mediocre, as was the tostada. The only mentionables was some really good guacamole and perfectly cooked rice. About 1/3 the way into my dinner plate, my waitress says, "How is everything....you want me to just bring the check?" I coughed and said "Um no...I don't think I'm quite ready yet." (Since I also needed another margarita to hit my $20 minimum). So let me share some thoughts, as my way to rescue this establishment: 1) Free chips and salsa like ever other Mexican restaurant. 2) Hire a real waitress 3) For the love of all things spicy - if you're gonna name the place "Salsa", then make some damn good salsa.
