Enchiladas de Oaxaca, tacos, side of nopales
    Adam A.

A friendly no-frills place with a variety of Mexican plates (we couldn't discern any specific regional specialties, though they do have a fair amount of seafood on the menu) We started out with a side order/appetizer portion of nopales-- it wasn't on the menu, but when we saw that they had a special of steak with nopales, we asked if we could just get a side order of nopales and they happily complied. They were warm (and still somewhat pleasantly slimy), sauteed with some tomatoes and epazote, with some raw onion and cilantro. Could have used a little more spice or onion, but overall a nice side. For main dishes we got tacos, and Oaxacan-style tacos enchilados with mole sauce. Many of their items come with choice of filling: cheese, meat, spinach, mushrooms, or potato, making them more vegetarian-friendly than the typical Mexican place. The tacos were quite standard-- meat was tender, and came with sides of onions, cilantro, and sauce to dress them up. The enchiladas come covered in mole, onions, and cheese, in authentic Oaxacan style. The potato filling was kind of bland, but the spinach is cooked with onions and epazote, and the mushrooms were also tasty. Unfortunately, the mole was very sweet and not particularly spicy-- I personally prefer somewhat more spice, and less sweet. I suspect, given that mole doesn't figure prominently anywhere else on the menu, that it's not really a specialty of theirs (perhaps even from a mix? I usually associate sweet mole with mix, but maybe that's unfair) Overall, we thought the food was quite good. I still prefer La Cabanita for their Oaxacan specialties, but El Bracero is going into the rotation!

The salsa verde on the enchiladas ($6) was refreshingly tangy, and the mole sauce on the Enchiladas de Oaxaca ($7) was top notch.

I absolutely love Mexican food and, being…read morenew to the area, was excited to see this business with an immaculate reputation on Yelp. I did come at an in-between time (around 3pm), so it's possible that this was a one-off, but it was so meh that I'm not sure I'll be back to give it another shot (if I do, I'll come right at lunch or dinner time). The good: the mole was fantastic! Even with a mediocre meal, this stood out as amazing. The portions were generous. I thought at one point the woman asked if I wanted chicken or beef enchiladas, and having never had beef enchiladas I said "beef please." It turns out, I received chicken enchiladas with a portion of skirt steak on top (see photo). Again, very generous. The decor was lively. The misses: The beans were quite bland, to the point where I was surprised...it's such a foundational element of Mexican cuisine, but they needed more spices / a touch more salt. Also, my wife ordered the veggie wrap and it was bland. It contained lots of different vegetables, but somehow they weren't seasoned. I know vegetarian burritos aren't all the craze, but when I took a bite of it, I agreed...it was just vegetables, no seasoning at all. Nice to have it on the menu for folks like my wife, but why not season them first? Maybe it was an oversight. The horchata was different from what I've had in the past...not bad, but not something I would recommend either. It was watery, lacked any cinnamon flavor, and had ground almond on top, which was interesting (maybe this is regional?). Without the dynamite mole and the generous portions, this would be a 2 star review, but I can't, in good conscience, give less than 3 stars with mole like that. But the beans...womp womp.

The menu is extensive with some Mexican plates you rarely see at most Mexican restaurants. The totopos are really crisp. The beans are well cooked and seasoned, the rice is moist, with some entrees the piquancy can be adjusted. The main dining room and uni-sex rest room is kept clean. Take-out available. Compostable and microwavable takeout containers There is some street parking.

It was about 1:30 and the place was empty though people came in and made orders to go. The waitress also seemed to be cooking in The back. The manager was also there to help us pick from their menu. We ordered our drinks and i got an horchata. This horchata was delicious and gigantic. They also brought nacho chips with beans to eat while we wait for our order and they were so good. I got a simple order of steak tacos. The meat was good and tender i do wish that their hot sauces were spicier as i prefer it spicy. We also got a plate of chicken that seems to be fried in a sweet batter. It was tasty but I wasn't a big fan of the sweet batter. There was also an order of tamales de molé which tasted a little dry butt spicy. Overall the place and food was a solid 4/5.

The major win for this restaurant in addition to the portion sizes? Their handmade flour tortillas that come on their empanadas / quesadillas -- such delicious, earthy and chewy tortillas! They're really close to the stairs to go up to the walkway over the hudson. Great stop before or after a trek! They've updated their name to "Seven".
