Very authentic flavors, reasonable prices and generous portions but those are not the biggest reasons to go. What sets La Cabanita aside is the service. Attentive, informative staff that know the menu even to the point of advising what items travel and reheat well as we were so impressed, we ordered takeout to bring to our friends. The food the next day tasted like it was just plated! exactly as they said. My wife, my in-laws, my sister and I arrived at La Cabañita for lunch this past Thursday. It was the first meal my wife and I had as a married couple, having come straight from being married at Poughkeepsie town hall. It wasn't our first time dining at La Cabañita, a restaurant of which we are already quite fond, but this time was a particularly memorable and joyful experience. The food is spectacular as always, though I must confess, due to the massive portion sizes, definitely better with more people unless you really don't mind leftovers! My wife and I are both recent converts to a gluten free diet, and our waiter, Luis was extremely insightful in helping us navigate the menu for delicious gluten free options that were at the same time authentic Oaxacan cuisine. Came up to Poughkeepsie to visit a childhood friend for the weekend. We came here on a Friday night, not even thinking about making a reservation, the place was packed so we will keep that in mind for next time. The wait would have been about 40 mins but we got lucky and saw two seats at the bar. Honestly, we loved sitting at the bar. We got to speak with the bar tender, catch up without feeling like we are taking up a table for too long and we got to see all the food coming out of the kitchen. We ordered a margarita (for me) and a mojito for her. Both were great and we ended up ordering three more each. For food, we started with guacamole. It was kind of odd ordering it because at first they said they were out for the night, but then came back a few minutes later and said if we can wait 10 minutes they'll have more. So of course we waited, who doesn't want guacamole lol. For dinner we ordered tacos, I went with the pork carnitas. The pork came out cubed and it was actually a little too fatty for me, not my favorite. My friend got the fried fish tacos, these were amazing! The fish was fried perfectly but still juicy inside. Friendly staff, quick service, and nice outdoor patio. My sister and I chose to sit outside as there is a very nice outdoor seating area. I've found that sometimes with outdoor seating waiters tend to forget about you but not here. They were very attentive throughout our meal, bringing us out water and refills on the complimentary chips and salsa (which was amazing btw). I had to make certain adjustments to my order because of my dairy intolerance. They were extremely accommodating and understanding. The food was brought out in under 10 minutes and everything tasted great. With the side of rice and beans, everything was very filling and I very much enjoyed my overall experience. I ordered the al pastor tacos with a side and rice and beans. The meat was juicy and delicious. I wish the meat had a touch more sauce but wouldn't say that was a deal breaker in any way. They gave me a yummy green sauce with a bit of a spicy kick that added moisture and great flavor. The beans weren't refried beans, which initially disappointed me. After taking a bite, I was no longer disappointed and couldn't stop eating it. They were so good! My fiancé ordered a torta and that thing was HUGE. It also came with fries but the sandwich was filling on its own. Everything was was great BUT the only thing I'd change is not getting some chips and salsa in the bag. Disappointed Food was delicious but ordered a mojito which on the menu says rum and that's how it's normally made but tasting it we knew was clearly not only rum. Tasted like tequila or mezcal. Asked the waitress what is was made with. Bartender told her vodka and rum. I don't like the taste of vodka so asked to get a different drink but bartender wouldn't change it! He would only agree to give us a Coke in exchange for a $10 mojito! That was really bad customer service and very disappointing. But since the food is so darn good I'll probably be back just won't order any alcoholic beverage! read more

I really enjoyed the ambiance and service at this restaurant. The salsa and chips were a welcome introduction to the feast. The queso fundido looked very different but tasted amazing. it was accented nicely by fresh tortillas. I ordered the fish tacos and had mixed results. The first one was more like fish jerky and turned me off a bit. The other two were nice though. The fresh salsa helped a lot. My husband ordered the real winners. The night. The memelitas were a huge surprise. They were a lot like a thin sope and great accompaniment to the meats of the 100% Mexican plate. The Mexican plate had car e asada, chicken tings, chorizo, carnitas, grilled cheese and vegetables. The flavors were out of this world! The food here is delicious, obviously freshly made, and it comes out quickly. The drinks are very reasonably priced. The tortilla chips are a bit heavier here than at most other Mexican restaurants I've visited, but they're nicely seasoned, and the sauces you get for dipping are a nicer variety (one spicy reddish-brown, one mild green) than you typically get elsewhere. The appetizer we got was billed as shrimp empanadas, but they were more like tacos because they weren't actually closed. That allowed you to see all the goodness inside, including chunks of avocado. They were my favorite part of the meal, and I would have been okay ordering a few plates of those as my dinner. And you got a small salad with it too! I instead went for a chicken fajita. The chicken breast looks to have been flattened and grilled, nicely seasoned, but it was slightly overcooked and a little dry. Everything else worked with the dish, including the very fresh and soft tortillas and especially the guacamole. The mole dish was almost melt-in-your-mouth tender. Our waiter checked on us often after serving us anything, and we were overall given very good service. I'm admittedly one of the people who still misses Castillo, which previously occupied this space. But La Cabanita is an excellent successor. read more

Staff here is super friendly, told us of the history of the restaurant and how it tries to emulate real street food from the Mexican interior towns. Thus, salsas are atypical, as are ingredients not usually found in traditionally Americanized Mexican dishes (in this case, radishes & limes are popular). We loved how this is situated in a former church, sitting atop a bit of a hill & has the high ceilings & beautiful wooden interior of that church. Noise level gets pretty clamorous because of those previous positives, but, if you concentrate on your food & the care & creativity put in to it, your taste buds will thank you. read more

There's indoor and outdoor dining arrangements. There's a wheelchair ramp, private party room and clean bathrooms. The staff is masked and sanitizes the tables between guests. I liked the decor. Instead of the usual sombreros and piñatas from Corona beer, they have Amate paintings in frames on the walls. Traditional Precontact bark paintings. Tried the chicken enchiladas with Mexican rice and beans. The portion size is normal and can be finished. Enchiladas do not reheat well. Three 6" tortillas filled with white meat chicken in a well balanced mole sauce. Not too piquant, that you don't know what's inside nor too sweet that it's like eating a candy bar. The food arrived hot and well plated. The prices are very reasonable. The staff is professional and can explain what's in a dish and if it can be modified to the guest's taste or not. The building reminded me of an old church. Stairs up the main entrance with high ceilings. There's a private party room (they were preparing for someone's birthday) that is behind the main dining room. The bar has top shelf tequilas and mezcal. It's also blocked off like a bank teller in the City NYC. If I'm in the neighborhood again I'll definitely stop in again. read more

The only complaint I have are the prices. I know since covid and inflation everything has gone up; but there are a few other good Mexican places around the area that are not nearly as much as here. When you walk in you think you've walked into a converted church in Mexico. Love the decor, especially the bar area. Service was attentive. We were here at 2pm on a Saturday. The food was fresh and delicious. The fried plantains aka maduros aka platanos frito was to die for! It was more of a dessert covered in cinnamon and sugar and a cream sauce to dip! I had fish tacos. The fish was thick and cooked perfectly! Portions were filling. We shared the nachos which weren't loaded in excess with greasy cheese, but lighter with veggies and cheese crumbles. They served tortilla chips with 2 different salsa dips. They have a back room that is perfect for renting for parties. I would rent the entire restaurant to have a party. There is even a patio. I've patronized La Cabinita probably about 12-13 times since they've opened, as I just learned about their existence about 3 years ago. I've dined in a few times before the pandemic hit our area, then did the take-out option several times, and now I've dined inside again about 3 times since the spring. I have never had a gripe about this restaurant. Servers are very personable and they hustle, hustle, hustle, but on a few occasions, like when I was last there the Saturday night before Father's Day last month (place was kinda dead) our sever kept disappearing for long stretches of time, or was paying more attention to another table and neglecting ours. We kept wondering what was going on with him! The food and the drinks are VERY good and there are plenty of authentic Oaxacan dishes available (I've been to Oaxaca a few times) as well as more traditional "Tex-Mex" style options that the 'gringos' really dig! But on that note, I'm VERY surprised that La Cabinita does not offer a black bean soup. La sopa de frijoles negros - yum! . But that's the only really annoying experience that I've had with La Cabinita in all the times I've patronized them. The grilled shrimp empanada appetizers are AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! I only wish you could order an even number of them, like 4 (you get only 3) so that when you're sharing with someone else, you can divide them evenly! read more
