Is it even possible to find delicious food in New Paltz? If you want great taste and you love Mexican food, then Los Jalapeños, off New Paltz's busy Main St. is going to be here just for you. I don't deviate too much when it comes to Mexican food- as long as I can get solid shrimp tacos, a seafood dish or a vegetarian one, I'm good. There's some serious energy here with colorful pops of sombreros and other Mexican decor. There's also a compact bar area+high chairs with the kitchen's cowboy doors beside it. Even though Jalapeños wasn't buzzing in the early afternoon I was here, I can really see this place popping at night. I mean...the rating and the majority of the writing on this place say it all. Unlike another Mexican spot in Highland I visited in which they served cut-up shrimp with their tails in my tacos, Los Jalapeños' shrimp tacos were NOTHING like that. These are unbelievably juicy, big, seasony, left whole AND there are 2 per taco! They came with a garlicky sauce which caught me by surprise because there was no menu indication and nor was I told about it when I ordered. It was good though- but I did try scraping most off. Regardless, Jalapeños is one Mexican restaurant that calls for consecutive returns with incredibly warm service. read more

I believe Los Jalapenos should be labeled as a hidden gem of New Paltz, NY. After circling Main Street for what seemed an hour trying to find a parking spot to find a restaurant the three of us could enjoy lunch. We gave up and left the crowded Main Street and drove out of the area. Regrouping we discovered this restaurant only 15 minutes away. Ordering Birria Quesadilla, Steak Chile Rellenos we were very pleased to find our entrees very tasty and presented well on the plates with flowers adoring the various plates. read more

Authentic Mexican food - not Americanized Mexican food. They are also very accommodating and flexible if you ask them to tweak a dish for you. Gotta try this restaurant. A quite cozy place for sure when first enter. The service was nice, only person handling the customers but she was very friendly and handled it like a pro and was sure to ask if the food was enjoyed and for refills. So chips and salsa was alright not much difference in them for other places. Chicken tortilla soup, glad it was a warm but not super hot temp, a lot of places have soups boiling hot, plus very well seasoned and flavorful, only wish it had more chicken. For fried shrimp tacos, definitely the MVP of the meal, very large shrimp light fried, but still plump and juicy, also fresh greens and large avocado slices. So much filling in tacos it was hard just close them to eat them, I loved the aioli sauce and wish had more of it. We stopped here before going on a walk through New Paltz. After chips and salsa (on the house), I had the carnitas and chicken tacos and my husband had the chilaquiles with steak. We also ordered a horchata and a hibiscus. It's relatively quiet on the patio and the new server was very nice going back and forth to verify what had gluten. The chilaquiles seemed to be quite tasty as they were finished quickly -- I liked the tacos and the house hot sauce helped though I would have liked some other topping on them (not sure what though). read more

After a long hike at Gertrude's Nose, we were famished and the prospect of Mexican food was really tempting! On a Saturday, around 3 pm, we found ourselves at Los Jalapenos, and it was initially pretty vacant inside. But throughout the course of our meal, the place started filling up! We ordered horchatas, and I was pretty disappointed. I've had the Spanish Horchata in Malaga, Spain and the regular horchata at Los Bronco in NYC, and this tasted nothing like those, instead it had a bit of an odd taste. Rozena agreed, but others in our party of 4 liked it. Beef Enchiladas. Wholeheartedly recommend these, especially if you seek a sizeable meal! Really tasty, packed with all the flavors you came for. The tacos were also really tasty, but I was full from the enchiladas by then. Really good service; nothing to complain about. read more

On a recent trip to New Paltz we decided to try out Los Jalapeños. Restaurant is cute and cozy with a nice ambience, the service was great and attentive, and the food and drinks were excellent. I had a casamigos mango margarita and my boyfriend had a blackberry mojito, both drinks were delicious. Steak fajitas and chicken enchiladas with the green sauce were also very delicious. Would definitely return when back in the area. read more

Always delicious food, friendly staff and great prices. Went for dinner recently with a party of 4. Our waitress was very friendly and quick. I order the beef enchiladas with both sauces, I highly recommend it! I also had a mango margarita (again) which was good too. The waitress forgot my friend's rice so when we reminded her she brought out the rice and later an apology tres leches (cake), which was so sweet of her. This is a very nice place BUT, in the winter it gets a little chilly inside. Tables are too close to the entrance (there are two separate ones) and when those doors open there is no denying how cold it is outside. The food on the other hand was how and delicious. The tacos are excellent. I had the chicken and the carnitas both were very flavorful and fresh tasting and this is one of the few places that actually gives you a slice of lime for each one!!!!the black beans soup was delicious and my wife's favorite that she has ever eaten out and the sliced avocado was perfectly ripened. What a sweet little gem of a Mexican restaurant. We went here at the last minute on a Wednesday night around 7 and it was packed. Luckily we got a table within a few minutes. Delicious authentic food full of flavor. We ordered chicken enchiladas and chicken chimichangas. Both came with rice and beans. The chicken filling was the best. Seemed like it was slow cooked with tomatoes and peppers which made it extra special. The house hot sauce was delicious. Stopped on Memorial Day on the way back into the city from upstate and were VERY impressed! Fantastic service, awesome food, and the margaritas really hit the spot! I'm from Texas originally so can be pretty judgmental about good Tex-Mex and I would say this was as good as many restaurants back home. Wow! I found a new favorite Mexican restaurant after one meal. Los Jalapeño's. Very quaint and colorful, with food that had some effort put into it. Not just beef in my burrito, but beautifully cooked shredded beef with COOKED peppers & onions that have been cooked together in a really flavorful sauce. Excellent! Not only did everything taste great, but the presentation was artistic. As pleasing to the eye as it was to the stomach. I'm not sure on this, but somebody had some culinary training. Great job! And as far as the the service & staff, three thumbs up! Our server was friendly and attentive, and the owner, who checked more than once on our well being, was very pleasant ! It's a very nice atmosphere. We loved it. The frozen margaritas we had were amazing. We had pineapple and the mango ones. I had a taco salad with Grilled cajun chicken, and it was phenomenal. It's not the typical iceberg lettuce and the dressing they have are all homemade and very delicious. My love ordered a chicken quesadilla, which was okay. You mostly taste the cheese. Mhew! Give me pasta or give me death is my motto but heck once in a while I like to venture outside my comfort zone and try something different. This Mexican spot is small with several tables for seating and if you're large in stature I'm not sure you can even fit in a booth because I'm fairly small and the booth seating was a little tight; maybe a bad booth (IDK). Pricing isn't bad, food presentation is really nice for the most part with my only complaint being those beans...what is up with those beans! The beans look like they are puréed. Maybe that's how the beans are supposed to be prepared because again I know nothing about Mexican cuisine but the beans just didn't look good so I didn't even taste them. Rice that came with beans was a bit on the hard side like it's been sitting around too long. Bad rice at a Spanish spot is bad when even the local Chinese restaurants get that bland, tasteless white rice cooked better than this place. As for their main entrees of tacos, burritos, etc those looked really good. My companion ordered a burrito and the presentation was really nice, they even put a real life christmas tree on the dish to "spruce" it up literally. I thought, "Is that really a piece of pine tree on your plate?" and sure enough it was. Strange but ok "A" for effort! I got the beef taco plate that came with three small tacos and of course the side of ugly beans and semi-hard/stale rice. Now those tacos were pretty damn amazing! I'm no taco or Mexican cuisine expert but yea those tacos were on point! I'll say main dishes are pretty damn good but those sides (i.e. rice & beans) look sad and taste sad. Maybe just a bad night but I'd stop in again if I'm in the area if not only for the cute tasting tacos. Overall not a bad place at all. read more

Great spot for authentic Mexican food down the street from downtown New Paltz. Came for lunch, free parking in the back, and ordered the chicken chimichanga after their recommendation. Complimentary chips, salsa, and homemade hot sauce upon request was given. The chimichanga came with beans and rice on the side and was well presented. Most importantly, it tasted great and was a nice, warm meal on the cold, rainy day I visited this restaurant...food coma already setting Very affordable pricing especially for the amount you get during lunch - $8.59+tip. They also have beers and drinks if you want to make your own happy hour. $4 beers and $5 margaritas Monday-Thursday. Decorations are nice and furniture is sufficiently comfortable. Staff was also very attentive and friendly. Overall, a great experience! Came back for lunch again and got the veggie quesadilla and it was perfectly cooked! Unlike other Mexican foods because there was tofu, spinach, and broccoli, but it was balanced very well with the cheese and other ingredients. Los Jalapeños is a surprise -- a pleasant one. Who would expect to find a tasty Mexican gem with charm on a side street in New Paltz, NY? Not me. I've eaten here 2x and each time the food has been nothing short of tasty. The dining room is pretty spacious and has booths and also freestanding tables. The menu is pretty broad. I've had the Enchiladas and also Chimichangas and neither one disappointed. We had a party of four both times and also got nachos (they also give you the customary free chips and salsa). Everyone left a completely empty plate on both occasions. There is an attached parking lot as well as street parking that may be hit & miss depending on the season and the hour. The service here can be a tad spotty. During our first visit we sat with only 3 place settings for 4 people for far too long. They also miss something on occasion (we asked for guacamole on the side with the nachos and while they didn't put it on the nachos they also never produced it "on the side" and we never asked for it again). They also bring out entrees a little oddly -- if three are ready out of four they just bring the three and the fourth person just sits there kind of waiting awkwardly). Even still, I look forward to returning for a third meal here. This is a college town and the prices here are more than reasonable. Four of us with an appetizer paid less than $80 (without the tip and with no alcohol) for dinner. Homerun! read more
