Sakura - Salmon platter (salmon teriyaki, ca roll, vegetable croquette, nigiri), miso soup, house salad - Japanese Near Me - Vienna, Virginia

This was my first trip to Sakura as part of a double date with old military buddies. From my experience sitting at the bar, enjoying some sushi as an appetizer, and seated at a cooking table, I give the restaurant an average of three stars. AOK for most things, brilliant at a couple, but wanting in a couple others. Don't let appearances fool you! Tucked away in a sleepy Route 7 strip mall, Sakura is absolutely cavernous inside and tables seem to go on and on for days as you progress inside past the bar and formidable sushi tables into the hibachi area. The seemingly long line in the overflow waiting area up front went by at formidable speed as the tables turned quickly to accommodate everyone. The ambience is welcoming in the front, carnivalesque further back. Bar service was ok once we got someone to make eye contact with us and take our order(- we waited for ten minutes looking expectantly at the ladies behind the bar before being served). Bar was fully stocked with premium offerings and pours were ample (+). The server at our cooking table was fabulous and juggled all our disparate requests with grace. (+) The best part of my experience was the sushi!! Beautiful, fresh cuts of quality tuna and yellow tail were perfectly portioned and melted in my mouth!!(++) Like some of the other Yelpers, the shine has rubbed off hibachi dining for me. I've nothing against a grill table; it's just not as exciting any more--unless, of course, there's a charming, engaging table chef. Sadly, the one we had was just average--not very much fun and a little off-putting at the end. (-) I confess been a while since I've been to a Japanese steakhouse, so while I was expecting the onion volcano and canned egg routine, I don't seem to recall the standard tableside antics involving the chef insisting patrons open their mouths so he can use them as targets--which our grill master did with rubbery-looking pieces of dark-edged, obviously overlooked bits of shrimp. He kept doing it even after it was clear that his aim was a bit off. (-) The filet mignon we ordered was cooked nicely, as was the chicken and shrimp and came with copious amounts of fried rice, onions, zucchini, shrooms, and sprouts(+). Each of us received a steaming cup of Japanese clear soup and an iceberg-based salad dressed in to ginger dressing. All in all, the experience was enjoyable. I doubt I'd return for the hibachi, but that delectable hamachi is calling my name for a second date!! read more

I could eat their cucumber and avocado salad all day long. Miso dressing is the best I've had.

First time ordering. Last time ordering. The sashimi ordered was decent and large. However the rainbow roll didn't have the usual California roll and the fish on top of the rainbow roll did not look appetizing. The tuna had lots of blood vessels showing and per my research this means the grade of sushi they used was of low quality. I didn't get eat any of the rainbow roll after the first. I'd order elsewhere for sushi rolls. read more

I've got to say compared to my other yelper friends; I had a much different experience than y'all did. I actually quite enjoyed myself and also enjoyed the food. My friend and I split a bottle of sake and had delicious sushi that I will remember to return to. Service is excellent and she was very attentive to her needs. We didn't have many demands, but nonetheless, she still was there when we needed her and right on point. Too bad that I don't remember her name because she's worthy of a shout out on here. This place is actually very large on the inside. From out looking in, it's very deceiving to think this place can be small. It's opens up to the dining room where sushi lovers can gather along with bar seating and sushi bar seating. When you go in the back; you come into the hibachi tables where they have several of them. Come here for your next birthday or family dinner. read more

This restaurant is so deceivingly gigantic, it blows my mind every single time I come here. The front portion of the resto is dedicated to sushi-only diners, and is bigger than most sushi restaurants I know of on its own! And then you walk into the back where all the hibachi tables are, and it's like it stretches on for daaaays. Hibachi/teppanyaki itself is something that has gotten less and less awesome for me the more I do it -- I think it's the novelty wearing off thing? I mean, it's usually fun when you go with a group, since it's an interactive dining experience, and the food isn't terrible, of course, but there's kind of a "been there, done that, bought that t-shirt" factor to the whole shebang now. Of course, every once in a while you get an amazing teppanyaki chef who makes the whole thing incredibly fun, but alas, that's not the experience we had at Sakura. First off, even though the resto was basically empty, they still made us wait forever and a day to be seated and to get our drinks. I think maybe they were a little short staffed on chefs, because even after we got our drinks, it took a while to place our orders, and then it was another billion years until our chef actually came around to us. The show and food itself was fine, nothing spectacular, but all the waiting around really didn't enhance our experience and was kind of a killjoy. I guess on the plus side, the drinks here are actually pretty cheap -- I got one called the Tazuki... or something... anyway, it was like a mai-tai/pina colada-type cocktail on crack and it was delicious. Alas, I fear my teppanyaki days may be coming to a close -- looks like I'll be sticking to sushi and ramen when it comes to my beloved Japanese food from now on. read more

Still my favorite restaurant in the DMV area. The staff provides excellent customer service, whether it's at the Bar, Sushi area or the Hibachi section. It feels like the bar, where everybody knows your name. This is more than just a restaurant to me, it's like home! With Hibachi to me it's all about the seasoning and of course the sauce. Can you say Yum Yum sauce?!?! I have traveled to a lot of places and hands down this is the best restaurant for Hibachi. The seasonsing, fried rice, shrimp and chicken are the BEST! read more

Great food! Filet was tender, shrimp was good size and juicy, nice portion sizes. Placing a review so I remember this place!

We've been here several times now and they are wonderful. I had different chefs each time and they are all wonderful. All of them are engaged and entertaining. Food is good as well. I ordered mamasan and it was light and tasty. We will continue to come here as we can. :) read more

We had a party of 6 celebrating a birthday. Reservation and seating was great. They had a nice menu for hibachi. Around the table we ordered various combinations of filet mignon, lobster, scallops, chicken and NY strip steak. The food was good but very special. The experience of the cook and preparation of the food was a bit weak - the guy kept asking us all these personal questions about who we are, if we are local, etc ... Small talk that is ok if you meet someone next to you on a long flight but not appropriate when someone is cooking for you. Prices were ok. If you have done hibachi in the past, don't expect a special experience. If you haven't, it is worth a try. read more

First off I should mention the place itself is beautiful, I love all the wood and traditional Japanese garb! I had no idea this dinky strip mall in Tyson's housed something so pretty! I was here this weekend for a gf's birthday with a group of 7. The hostess told us initially the could not find our reservation-- the birthday girl had made it herself and called to confirm it the day before so this was irritating. But instead of simply apologizing for the mix up she acted like we were trying to pull one over on her. Fortunately the manager on duty was nearby and she apologized and had us seated quickly. Our server was efficient, but not particularly friendly. She seemed annoyed we didn't know what we wanted as quickly as she came back with waters, but she only gave us two drink menus for 7 of us, so that should have been expected. She also seemed annoyed with one of us that wanted sushi and came back to the table a few times before remembering to bring back a sushi menu for her. To her credit she did ask us how to split the check before it needed splitting, so that was nice. I was not impressed by the left over food on the ground in the cooking stations. You sit at the grill, so I would think between groups they would clean up the discarded bits and pieces, but that was not the case as far as I could tell. On the other hand our chef was extremely entertaining. He joked with us the whole time and really made it a nice experience. As for the food: I ordered lobster and scallops, which I thought would have been the first things off the grill since they required the least amount of cooking time, but they were actually last off, making them extremely tough and chewy as they were over cooked. The flavor was heavenly though, or would have been, so that was disappointing. The veggies, rice, soup and salad were very tasty. At the end of dinner they brought a mini cheesecake to the birthday girl and sang to her, which was sweet. Also, after we had paid our tab and were finishing up or drinks the manager came over and offered us a round of shots for the inconvenience, so that too was a very nice gesture. read more

Fresh sushi and great for a reasonably-timed sitdown lunch. On weekdays, they have a lunch special of $11 for two rolls (6 pieces per order). The proportion is not overly heavy on the rice too, which I applaud them for. Whether or not they have a lunch special, I like to do the sashimi appetizer (6 pieces total of yellowtail, tuna, and salmon) for $7.50 with a $5-6 roll. This leaves me satisfied but not overly full. Fish is fresh and perfectly cut! Spicy rolls are not the leftover fish crud either! I've also had the rainbow roll and salmon skin rolls before. Thin slices but nice in terms of fish coverage; also, they got overly generous with the kani (fake crab) stuffing which overpowers the delicate taste of the fish. Salmon skin is crunchy and medium-large size. I'm not a teppanyaki fan and wasn't overly impressed by theirs. So I'll stick with the sushiiii read more

Tried for the first time and it was all right, but not great because its steaks were so too tough, even cooked medium rare; fried rice was pretty good. The Chef, Loi, deserved compliment for did a fantastic job. But the Waitress, Sam, was totally unsatisfactory!! She never paid attention to the refills. I almost didn't leave any tips because I am a firm believer that tips are earned and not automatically, similar to inheritance. read more

Wait, what just happened? This was definitely a last minute "ooooo, let's try that place" the outside of the restaurant is pretty cool, the door frame is shaped like a Japanese door but the rest of it is... Ehhh! When you walk through the double and heavy doors you're welcomed by a bar on the left and some sushi on the right. Honestly, I almost left because I thought it was a sit down Japanese restaurant. The hostess explained that the front was for sushi only and the hibachi was towards the back. It's a very big restaurant but SUPER dirty :( Their bathrooms were very dirty and sticky from the door to well, you can picture the rest. (Double yuck)! The hibachi grills were very dirty and didn't seemed that they were cleaned properly (which I figured out later why). The waitress came out in their cute traditional outfits which was nice and exciting but that's where our excitement ended. The soup was good, salad good, then the main course began and it was very sloppy. Not the worst but also not the best Hibachi I've been to. The chef had rice flying all over the place, the meals were made out of place and he didn't even bother cleaning the area that well. I was so lost by everything that was happening that I don't even remember my night! I'm not going to suggest for anyone to either go or not go here only because I know you can find better but they're also not the worst. Hope your experience is better than mine :) read more

Really recommend this spot for hibachi! We called ahead and they advised us to make a reservation -- so glad we did because there was definitely a dinner rush! I'm giving 5 stars because they were SO accommodating to my gluten free diet, the chef prepared my food first, with GF soy sauce of course, and asked if certain things were okay before doing it. They were knowledgeable about what had gluten and offered alternatives (yum yum for the salad dressing). And it was so delicious! I'm so happy to be able to enjoy hibachi as someone who needs to be gluten free. read more

Great service, the food was solid and not out of the ordinary for a hibachi place. The staff was helpful given us having a 2 1/2 year old with us. Also, the price point was as bad as first thought - and we all left satisfied. We would definitely come here again. read more

Sakura - Christmas Time - Japanese Near Me - Vienna, Virginia

Came for dinner with a couple friends while in town visiting and had a pretty good meal. Started with a few different sushi rolls which were fine but, if I lived here this would not be a sushi destination based on what we had. The cooktop table dinners were also good but not great. One different touch was the option of chicken livers for your appetizer. Of course I had to pick them if for no other reason than to gross out my friends. The livers were plentiful but cooked to death and dry. For the entree, I chose the filet and scallops. Again, pretty much middle of the road in terms of flavor. The filet was prepared a perfect medium rare but the scallops were overcooked and tough. I also thought the shrimp sauce was somewhat bland and a little watery. The chef put on a good show with all the standard routines and jokes. read more

Visited here for lunch on a Thursday and I have to admit that I was surprised by the ambiance and decor inside - it's very nice! The service we received by our waitress was great. Our hibachi chef seemed like he was over his job and there wasn't really a show. The amount of food you got was little in comparison to other Hibachi places. The rice and meat and veggies was a small portion. Maybe because it was a lunch portion? But even for that it seemed small. A good one time experience but I would visit some other Hibachi places to see what they're like as well. I would give higher stars if the portions were more and our Chef seemed a bit more pleasant. read more

Lunch not the best for Fried Rice. Here is the scoop. The ginger salad was really good and fresh. The steak & salad was the best part. I wish they served the shrimp with the steak vs well before like it's an appetizer. I am used to Benihanas as they give you a shrimp appetizer and with your meal, here it's one time, so know that upfront. The fried rice tasted like day old rice and was on the harder side. I personally also don't like lots of corn in my fried rice. The veges were not crisp as they should be. I am not sure if the they downgrade the lunch service, but I paid a dinner price. If the Fried Rice was on point, easy 4 star place. The service was good. I cringe at paying a higher price for lunch and feeling let down by a main party of the meal. read more

I came here for lunch with my bf and overall, enjoyed the dining experience here until my stomach got uneasy, most likely because my stomach sadly can't handle fried things and raw oysters at the same :( Overall, decent sushi & their menu is divided by the sushi bar & the hibachi layout like their restaurant, which is massive and very nicely decorated despite the average entrance/location. I thought the sushi was a bit overpriced for the quality but nonetheless, my bf and I liked our dynamite roll (probably wouldn't get the salmon/avocado roll again tho) I ordered the Kaki fried (fried oysters with cutlet sauce on the side) because I enjoy indulging in fried food and raw oysters & thought it'd be a good idea to get 2 for 1 but NOPE. Sohee's stomach could not handle the fried oyster combo for some odd reason so will not be trying that here or anywhere for a while. Proceed with caution on the fried oysters in general unless you're in Baltimore. My bf ordered the beef teriyaki but it wasn't anything special. I personally didn't like the sauce cause I thought it was too heavy but it could be the fried oysters talking. Service was great and this place is def worth the try! read more

I've been here twice in person and ordered delivery probably 100 times. I like that their sushi is nicely moist. Like anything with mayo, you can legit see the creaminess. Good avocado texture too. I also like that they give me plenty of soy sauce packets and the delivery orders are never dripping with spilled soy. When things get more back to normal I will go back in person with my friend for habachi seafood yumminess :) read more

Went here for dinner with the family and stayed in the sushi lobby. Happy to say that the server was so kind to us! She was especially patient with our indecision and completely accommodating when I asked for a menu to keep. Miso soup and house salad are pretty good if you like that! :D but I'm no expert. My favorite highlight was the Steak Teriyaki (eat while hot!). The spider roll is popular with my family, and we liked that. Our lobster roll came wrapped in pink, and it was fairly alright. Great quality, but you're really banking on that sauce/tartar for a flavor kick, else it tastes like a relatively nice salad. read more

Only leaving 2 stars because the food was good and the chef was great however the waitress Toon made our experience horrible. Just arrived from out of State to see family since it's been so long and thought this was the perfect place to enjoy time together. The waitress rushed us throughout the entire evening. Upon sitting she is already asking for our orders, within minutes of getting our food she came with boxes for us. When we needed stuff she was nowhere to be found. This was a great place for my roommate's birthday lunch. We went on a Sunday afternoon and were seated immediately. The restaurant itself is in a strip-mall plaza, but very spacious and decorated inside. If you've ever been to hibachi, you know exactly what to expect. For under $30, I got the chicken and steak combo entree, which came with a small app, broth soup/salad, and rice and veggies. They include an 18% gratuity with parties of 8 or more. Because they cook all the food on the griddle in front of you, you can't expect your meat to be cooked exactly how you want (I ordered my steak medium and it came out more medium-well). However, both the chicken and steak were seasoned well and tasted delicious. Our chef, Daniel, was super funny and made our meal experience unique. And our server, Kitty, was very attentive to our water glasses. I won't go as far as calling this my go-to hibachi spot in the area, but it's in a good location and there's nothing to complain about! read more

Very unsatisfied!!! Long wait and there was barely anyone there. Food presentation was amazing but the taste was plain and bland. The chicken was not seasoned at all and tasted cheap and rubbery. Too pricey for not so great food. What surprises me is that I've been to other locations and always had a great experience but this time I didn't and it was my first time to this location. I still have a tip even though I was not too happy. I was better off going to subway or chipotle if I had known. Will not be returning! Staff was not too friendly and maybe I wasn't the right crowd for them which is sad because no one should feel that way ever. read more

Sakura - Teriyaki chicken and rice - Japanese Near Me - Vienna, Virginia

We were in the area visiting the "Holy Trinity" (Marshall's, Home Goods & TJ Maxx) when we were feeling a bit peckish. Normally, we'd just go to Super Chicken, but we had Peruvian chicken not too long ago. Upon discovering that I haven't frequented a hibachi grill since a third grade field trip to Benihana, my boyfriend decided we should dine at Sakura. When we entered the restaurant, we were surprised to discover that looks can be deceiving and this unassuming strip mall restaurant was quite spacious and well appointed. The front part of the restaurant consists of the hostess stand, a sushi bar and lounge, with tables for those who don't want teppanyaki. The remaining 2/3rds are the hibachi grills. We were seated with six other patrons and our server took our drink orders and brought us salad and soup. Most people order steak or surf 'n turf options. Our chef comes out and he's pretty good, but it's more fun if you participate in the whole cheesy dramatics. Which means if he's tossing a rubbery shrimp at you, give it your best college try to catch it with your mouth, darn it! Otherwise, what are you here for? You're paying for food and entertainment! I noticed that the chefs are more engaging if there are kids at the grill but our table had some pretty reserved people. They seem to loosen up later on in the meal. We left very full with a lighter pocketbook (teppanyaki ain't cheap) and a few culinary tips. I never thought to put garlic compound butter in my fried rice before but now I can't think of doing anything else! Also, don't feel too squeamish about the chicken livers. They are pretty tasty! I wouldn't knock coming here again, but it's probably more fun with a group. read more

This review is just for the Teppanyaki dinner, they appear to have a nice sushi area up front which I would love to try some other time. As Teppanyaki dinners go, this is par for the course. The show is always loud, fast, and mechanical. I was there with the kids and they had a blast. The magic has worn off for me, unfortunately. Food is just okay. The ginger salad is refreshing but the soup that follows looks and tastes like someone made it using ramen packets. Steak was good, cooked to the correct doneness per request but the beef was low quality and excessively lean and dry tasting even though mine was medium-rare. Again, kids loved it and cleaned their plates. Highlight of the evening is the shrimp catching. Again, a entertaining process for some, but not really a place to go for good food. read more

Surprisingly good sushi and Japanese food considering the price in N.Va. Will definitely revisit later.

I have loved this place since 2008. The spicy tuna roll and spicy California roll are to die for (and I have had sushi in Japan many times). I love the salad and miso soup too (and bonus: I paid about $18 for all of the above on the lunch special). There's a pretty decent lunch and dinner crowd but I have never had to wait more than 10 min. The hibachi is fun and is in a large area in the back (a great activity for groups or if you are hosting guests). I'm not a huge fan of the shopping center parking lot (very busy and a little confusing) but other than that, no complaints. Service has always been good. Highly recommend. read more
