My adventurous eater and I tried out Sushi Koji after rugby yesterday. It was a real treat. Our server was very helpful in helping us decide what to get, and we thought we would try sashimi (after reading reviews about the place) as well as noodles. Fellow Yelpers did not steer us wrong! We ordered Otoro (fatty tuna) and sake belly (salmon belly) sashimi, listed as 3 pieces each. We also ordered tempura udon, a shrimp tempura roll*, takoyaki, and mentaiko butter udon (off the specials menu). Let me begin by saying the space is clean, roomy, and well-decorated. We enjoyed looking at the artwork and figurines, which included anime figures that we recognized. There were many tables, and though they may be physically close together, there is enough separation to be comfortable without being on top of each other or feeling cramped. There was a family of five that was seated next to us partway through the meal, and I never felt like the noise level changed or that we suddenly felt as if there were more people around. The takoyaki came out covered in bonito flakes. The sauce was a perfect blend of tempered spicy mayo as my adventurous eater enjoyed it without being overwhelmed by heat. The bites were well-sized as not to be too large, but we were able to bite in without burning our tongues our with the right balance of batter and octopus, and we both enjoyed it greatly. The sashimi came out with the shrimp tempura roll on a beautifully arranged boat - 4 pieces each! We each tried two pieces of otoro and sake belly, and the pieces just melted into our mouth. The otoro was garnished with what appeared to be hint of wasabi and maybe chopped jalapeño, which was too much for my adventurous eater to try, so I gently scraped it off. Neither of us were able to taste anything but the well-chosen slices of fatty tuna, which were a hit. We then tried the sake belly which were garnished with a sliver of fried garlic and garlic paste. Again, I scraped it off for the adventurous eater, who then raved about how delicious it was! I tried it with the garlic and agreed. The garlic was perfectly fried, and was the right amount not to overwhelm the delicate buttery texture and flavor of the salmon belly. Although, I will admit - while it's a nice flavor to add, the sashimi itself didn't need anything to be added. The tempura udon came out, with perfectly battered pieces - 2 shrimp, an asparagus, an onion ring, a slice of sweet potato, and a slice of eggplant. My adventurous eater attacked the shrimp while I munched on veggies. The batter was crispy, light, and not greasy. My mentaiko butter udon came out and I am so glad I ordered it! There was a little nest of noodles, with two halves of a soft-boiled egg, and plenty of creamy sauce. The menu described the dish as buttery and umami and it did not deceive. The udon was perfectly chewy and slurpable, coated with delicious creamy sauce. I debating mixing in the eggs because they looked so perfect, so I dipped one half in the sauce instead and ate that whole, before mixing in the other half into my bowl. Even my adventurous eater tried a little bit of my udon and agreed that it was delicious! Not having had mentaiko butter before, I looked it up before writing this review. The dish is described as being a spicy-fish roe butter sauce, but what we are talking about is a very mild heat. The dish was warming, tasty, and very comforting. It was also surprisingly light considering the buttery richness of the flavors. I finished every last bit of the noodles in my bowl and drank the rest of the sauce, with all the fish roe stirred in. I may have also commented a couple of times on how phenomenal the dish was. That was when our server shared that it was the first day it had been on the menu, so they were looking for feedback. I would say that the dish alone is worth checking out, but I feel like you will keep coming back due to the quality of everything else. I think this place is a gem and I will definitely look for excuses to return to Oakton to eat there again. Between the friendly service, the cheerful ambiance, and the amazing food, this is hitting all the right notes! * My adventurous eater filled up on everything else before even getting to the shrimp tempura roll, so we ended up packing up the rest of the udon and the shrimp tempura roll to bring home. Due to life, the roll never made it into the fridge, so we tragically had to toss it without trying it. I wish I could tell you how it was, but I can say the roll was beautifully formed and served and looked absolutely delicious. This is where I wish I had taken pictures of everything. read more

I came here for iftar and honestly had such a great experience at Sushi Koji. We ordered the Sushi for 2, which came out as a full sushi boat with around 12 different types of sushi and nigiri, and it was way more food than we expected in a good way. I initially thought it would be mostly rolls, but it leaned more toward nigiri. That said, everything was super fresh and really well prepared, so no complaints there. I recently started eating seafood again after years of avoiding it, so I have been easing into it, and this was actually a really good place to do that. The fish tasted fresh, clean, and not overly fishy, which made it a lot easier to enjoy. The Osaka roll, which our server recommended, was really good, but my favorite was definitely the paradise roll from the sushi boat. Anything with shrimp tempura is a win for me, and this one hit the spot. The ambiance is cute, cozy, and on the smaller side, which made the whole experience feel more quiet and intimate. It did not feel rushed at all, which I appreciated, especially since we were breaking our fast. We ended up taking a lot of food to go because the portions were so generous, and surprisingly, everything still tasted fresh and delicious even the next two days. The only downside is that it is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, portions, and overall experience helped justify it. Overall, great quality sushi, generous portions, and a calm, intimate vibe. This was my second time at Sushi Koji and it really hit the spot. All of the fish is really fresh and was flavored really nicely. We ordered the scallop carpaccio, uni nigiri, otoro nigiri, dragon roll, baked scallop roll, and tonkotsu ramen. The scallop carpaccio is a must-try! The scallops were really fresh and there was an amazing yuzu sauce that paired really well with it. I also thought the nigiri stood out too-the portions were really generous and the fish was fresh! Cozy sushi spot in a strip mall in Vienna with fresh sushi and draft beer along with a variety of ramen and appetizers. We started with the koji black cod as I wanted to taste the koji sauce which had a slightly sweet and umami taste with a tender cod filet inside and a crispier grilled outside on a bed of vegetables. Rainbow specialty roll had a variety of sushi fish out and crab meat, cucumber and avocado on the inside. Tonkatsu ramen had a rich broth yet not too salty with two slices of grilled pork, marinaded shiitake mushrooms, seaweed and other ingredients. It's the marinading (mushrooms) grilling (pork) and making of the rich broth with fresh noodles that makes this ramen better than your average ramen restaurant. I didn't try the spicy tan tan ramen; got feedback that it was not too salty and spicy enough with simple ingredients and fresh noodles. Small portion though. Fresh draft beer came in a frosty mug. Came here for Valentine's Day and it was such a great choice! They don't do reservations on the weekend but planned to get there around when they just opened to beat the crowd. They decorated their restaurant Valentine's Day themed, which I thought was very thoughtful and fit the vibe. We ordered ramen and about 4 rolls of sushi. Came here for lunch. We tried the sushi and the ramen. I got the TanTan Me and the salmon skin roll. The sushi was okay. The ramen was "meh". The TanTan didn't come with any other additions like bamboo shoots (my favorite) or corn. The broth was pretty watery and not that spicy at all. But the worst part was the noodles. I'm not sure of the actual name of the noodles, but they weren't traditional ramen noodles. Service and overall ambience was decent, no complaints. I am beyond impressed with Sushi Koji. What a hidden gem! This has to be the best value for high quality sushi in the entire dmv. On weekdays they have a lunch menu with sushi/ramen combos as well! From start to end, I was pleasantly surprised with every dish. Even the house salad had a delicious dressing and I didn't expect the lunch sushi combo to include a steamed egg custard (which hid an entire shrimp inside!) The portions are very generous, with super thick cuts of sashimi and light rice on the nigiri. Even the spicy tuna roll had a little more kick than your typical sushi spot. We also got the seafood kaizen ramen which was one of the best bowls of ramen I've had in the dmv. The noodles are all handmade with a bouncy texture. The broth is rich and flavorful without being too heavy. There was shrimp, squid, and an entire softshell crab in this bowl. Service was quick and attentive. They brought out extra plates and bowls for sharing without us even asking. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. The chef deserves all his flowers and we will definitely be back! read more

Was a little skeptical at first trying a Japanese restaurant in Vienna and seeing items like American BLT roll and crawfish roll on the menu. However, their sushi is great quality at a reasonable price. We stayed away from the specialty rolls and went for the traditional sushi, and all the fish was extremely fresh. The fish quality here is impressive for the DMV area and the pricing is justified. Sushi Koji is definitely on the busier side on a Saturday evening, so I'd recommend calling a few hours in advance to make sure you can get a table. I came here with two friends this past Saturday and we had a good experience. Initially, the three of us wanted to get the PARTY PLATTER A, but our server told us it would take ~40 minutes to make, so we decided against it. FYI - Definitely plan in advance if that's what you're interested in. SALMON ROLL - 6 Pretty standard, six pieces salmon maki. The salmon was good quality and it was a tasty six bites. You won't be surprised. YELLOWTAIL ROLL - 7 Also pretty standard - the yellowtail maki at Sushi Koji has more green onions than I'm used to which gave it a lot more oomph. The yellowtail was pretty good too, but nothing mind-blowing. SASHIMI FOR TWO - 68 The two of my friends shared this and they thoroughly enjoyed it and thought the amount of sashimi was worth the price. Also, beautiful presentation! There was a variety of different sashimi - salmon, salmon belly, scallops, octopus, white tuna, tuna, and more. I only ate a piece of salmon belly and scallop, but both were fresh and delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed the salmon belly here. The scallops were also top-notch. I'm glad to see a good sushi restaurant in Vienna and now know where to go if I'm feeling sushi. read more

Since it was restaurant week, they didn't offer their usual lunch menu, so I had to order from the regular menu instead. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed--especially with the salads. The quality was poor, and the lettuce looked like it had been frozen and thawed, making it completely unappetizing. I lost my appetite before even getting to the main dishes. I called the restaurant to let them know, and while they did apologize and said they would remember my name for a future visit, I'm not sure if I'll be back. I came here with a friend because she thought the way Chirashi was presented was really cute. I was not disappointed! The Chirashi came in a cute little boat along with the rice which was well seasoned. The regular sushi platter was more than enough for me (I have smaller portion) and I loved the portion of the salad appetizer. Usually restaurants only give a small plate but this place gave a small bowl of salad for each person. Service was really good. The waitresses came to check in on us multiple times and we were only there for less than an hour. Interior was very clean and modern, and I loved the ambience because of the dim yellow lights. I would say the quality of the sushi was great especially compared to the overpriced sushi place near my neighborhood that only has good presentation and mid sushi.
