Came here with referral from a friend who loves Indian food -- authenticity is there! Ambience: 3/5, the inside is very simple, bare bones with a buffet counter in the middle but not in a bad way. You come here for the food not the ambience lol. Only complaint is we kept having fruit flies going around our table. Service: 5/5, our waitress was super friendly and receptive to our needs, the food came out quick, and they definitely treat their customers well. Food: 3/5, we ordered the chicken Karahi and chicken tikka masala with the least spice possible...even then it was too spicy for our liking. Portions are generous! If you can do spice, then great! Cheese naan was basically a cheese pizza...would probably go with the regular naan. I am not an expert or anything. However I have been able to eat Indian/Pakistan food from San Francisco to NYC. I will have to say I was very surprised how good this place was. Not ditching on Waco but we are a smaller town in Texas and normally places like this tend to be just ok. I highly recommend eating here if you are here on vacation or even if you live in the area. Everything I had ordered was so full over flavor and spices. I was surprised by the appetizer and the level of spice since most places tend to lower the spice level. Love the food here ! The fans in there are always running high and its a little bit of a bother. But they will turn them off if asked to , and its very appreciated. I'm giving this place 4 stars because of the atmosphere. The food was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala...great! It had ample flavor and a generous heaping plateful of it! (I didn't finish everything) Back to the atmosphere, the inside was a red and grey paint theme, the colors might work but it has the "old buffet" feel which needs to go...LED lights over the table and throughout the restaurant give the wrong kind of light...also upbeat Indian/Pakistani music doesn't go with the general; soft, peaceful, mood lit, Indian restaurants I've been to. I am so excited about Saffron!! We have visited a couple of times now, and I will definitely make this a regular place. They bring raita (a kind of yogurt dip) with some raw veggies to the table when you first sit down. Very refreshing, almost like a palate cleanse. The wait staff is very friendly. They were quick to refill drinks and checked on us often. They brought a carafe of water for the table since 2 of us did not order drinks. I had a mango lassi. It was iced, not blended, and very smooth. So far, we have tried the Karahi chicken, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and the saffron grill for entrees. We also ordered chicken samosas for an appetizer. I can't decide if I like the Karahi or butter chicken better. Karahi chicken had beautiful notes of ginger throughout, and a slightly higher base level of spice. Butter chicken was creamy as can be. I did not try the chicken tikka but it looked similar to the butter chicken. Saffron grill was slightly expensive for what you get. My parents were able to split it between them though so considering it as an entree for two, it isn't too bad. They said it was really good; my dad wished they had grilled the onions a bit longer but that's just personal preference. Samosas were smaller than I have had at other restaurants, but they come 6 to an order instead of 2 or 3. Absolutely delicious. I will try and order them every time I go. The entrees are not very spicy unless you ask. The first time we went, it was flavorful but almost no spice at all. The next trip I just asked them to make it spicier. When we were leaving, several employees thanked us for coming in. I will be trying the buffet next. All in all, I cannot think of anything negative to say. We were in Waco for an art workshop and stopped here after a long day. They had dosas as a weekend special. I had the masala as did my friend. Our other friend also had the dosa but she ordered chicken. The crepe was thin and crispy on the edges and filled with potatoes and chickpeas. It came with two dipping sauces. It was so big it hung over the edge of the plate. Our waitress was so so nice. Asked if we were visiting Waco and was very engaging. I will definitely back when in Waco. read more

I took out different food choices, my first visit to this restaurant. Some of the items were very good and some need improvement. The garlic naan was exceptional, as was the rice pudding for dessert. The mixed grill was just OK, unnecessarily spicy, and the chicken was dry/overcooked. The palak paneer was very watery, thus atypical palak paneer, but this may be a regional difference, compared to most Texas restaurant offerings, and it was a tasty offering. Onions, cucumber and carrots on the side was a nice touch Clearly, this restaurant has the most authentic Indian/near-Asian Food in Waco. I'll try it again in a few months. Loved the palak paneer and garlic Naan. I had forgotten to specify spice, but the dish came out spiced perfectly a cross between mild and medium. It is a perfect combo to accent the flavors. My husband got a chicken dish. He loved his and said it had a perfect blend of spice as well. The atmosphere is relaxing. We arrived after the buffet so it wasn't very busy. I ordered butter chicken with extra chicken and I don't believe I received the extra I paid for.. I'd be interested to see how little they give you if you don't order "extra". It didn't even amount to one whole chicken breast. The naan they provide with the meal was large size so thankfully I was able to fill up on bread. Ordered Palak Paneer and it was extremely watery, not creamy or flavorful, I would definitely pass. Vegetable Samosa was OK, I've had better from the frozen section of the grocery store. I'd pass. Definitely not worth paying $50+ But I guess it's what you get for wanting indian food in TX. read more

I had high hopes because of the reviews on here but dang, I was so disappointed. buffet was SOOO small (honestly wouldn't call it a buffet at all) It was a 1.5 mini buffet bar with like 5 options of food. Went on Saturday around 12pm so an hour after buffet has started and the food was still dry and bland. Had half a plate and didn't want to go back. So disappointed. I don't do a lot of reviews but this place is very special. The preparation is perfect, the menu is both familiar and adventurous, and the taste... oh my god the taste. First time we were kind of cautious ordering and came away really impressed. This time we all got biryanis. I got goat. They were all magnificent. Spice, umami, meat fat... Just wow. I wish I'd bought another just to take home. Next time I will. Oh and the appetizers are fantastic. There are some items you don't find at many Indian places. Try them. Recommendation is to come in and order something you normally wouldn't. I mean, I do eat goat but I have to be pretty sure that the place is on the level. I'm ordering goat next time when I come back. Twice. So, to address a couple things in other reviews. I found the service to be perfect both times I've gone. I ordered the butter chicken. It was my first time here. It was delicious. The garlic naan was the perfect addition to dip in that decadent sauce. I am a wuss. I don't like heat. I said mild and it was still a bit hot for me, but it was so good I just put on my big girl pants and suffered through it. I will be going back to try other items. Amazing! We were visiting our son at Baylor and found Saffron on Yelp. We had the Nuclear Naan, garlic Naan, lamb curry, bhuna chicken, and karahi goat. The sauce on each entree was incredible. The nuclear naan was was so yummy! I would suggest this restaurant to anyone who wants authentic, spicy, Indian food. What a find! Don't order the Raita or the daal if you are expecting authenticity. After years of waiting for good Indian food in Waco, we made it folks. I didn't know about this place until I researched new local eateries and was surprised that it's been here since August of last year. The portions are very good for the price that you pay. The food tastes very authentic, and nicely seasoned. The naan, is cooked perfectly and you can order one large naan or 4-pieces which are nicely cooked on both sides, not chewy or hard.
