We've been going to this store for over 3 years now since moving to Manoa, and I've never taken time to recognize the awesome folks who work there. We especially get great service from the bakery; our son loves to get the hot French bread, and when he goes up and asks the bakery staff, they're always super nice to him. One time, uncle let him pick a free cookie from a odds 'n ends pack, and my boy was really happy. The store is decently clean though windy days make this tough with the leaves blowing in the door. Flowers are good, produce as well, beer and wine usually have decent deals. Very well stocked, can usually find whatever I need. And the staff is very nice all around, especially at check out. There's always a polite smile and acknowledgement of you, especially if they recognize you. read more

I like this safeway. It's clean, easy to park. It is generally a little more expensive than other supermarkets, but I enjoy the shopping experience. One thing that really bugs me is that they don't check the expiration date very often. It has happened to me three or four times that I found something that is expired on the shelf. So Attention shoppers, make sure you check the expiration date!!!!! read more

I have gone there twice in March: both times, I was overcharged on items marked for sale. I was charged the full price. As it has happened there in the past, (I was charged more than $20.00 once for lamb, which I have never eaten or bought in my life), I fortunately checked both times. The clerk was the same both times--never apologized, but was quick to note that he would refund me the overcharged money as if he were doing me a favor. Proof: my receipt numbers 1. 130317181957 (March 17th) and number 2. 250021449302(March 1st) The sad part is they have n built in incentive to conduct their business ethically. If we don't catch their errors, they profit; if we do catch their errors, they refund the mistake. Hard to believe I am turning to Walmart more and more read more

Good selection of items at a reasonable price. This location isnt as large as kapahulu or beretania but is close by and does the job.

I love Safeway's french and sourdough bread! It's baked fresh every day and can be purchased still warm! Safeway is nice to shop in because the aisles are spaced out nicely. You won't feel too crowded. Their deli is my favorite among Hawaii's supermarkets. Cheese, cheese, cheese. They even have head cheese (blech!). Their sandwiches, made to order, are AWESOME. I like the Italian and Greek sandwiches. A great lunch deal with chips and a drink for less than $7. read more

I like this Safeway a lot. The location is really nice (in Manoa Valley) and it's close to a lot of nice places to eat. I like their sandwich bar is really good and I especially like the turkey, avocado sandwich on sourdough bread. Their poke isn't the greatest, and I havn't tried anything from the deli. There is a parking lot that usually has a lot of free spaces, so parking is easy. read more

This is the first time I really have something horrible to say about this Safeway. I have lived in Manoa for over ten years and have been purchasing my groceries from here all the time. This afternoon I met the most rude cashier here. My mom was holding her flowers up so the blossoms don't get crushed on the conveyer belt. Being that the boy behind us kept pushing his stuff up smashing the blossoms. There was a lady in front of us being rung up. She was almost done with her transaction, just short of signing and getting her receipt and bingo pieces, when the cashier grabbed the flowers from my mom. So my mom moved up sightly, not in the lady's way, when the cashier proceeded to tell my mom she was rushing her (the cashier) and we were being rude to the lady in front of us. First of all, my mom only moved up because the cashier grabbed the flowers from her. Anyone would think that the cashier is done with the person if front and move up if she is grabs what we have to purchase. All the while my mom was paying for the flowers the cashier kept saying how rude my mom was to the customer in front of us and that she didn't have to hold the flowers up because the boy was smashing the flowers. I told the cashier we weren't being rude, we were just holding the flowers and she proceeded to berate my mom and I over in Front of all the customers. My mom told her she was holding the flowers so it wouldn't get smashed, but the cashier told her she was rushing her and the customer in front of her. I was short of telling her she was being rude. I proceeded to the customer service counter and spoke to a manager about her behavior I could've made a huge scene but I refrained. This is usually a really good Safeway. My kids grew up coming here to shop. The cashiers here are nice and accommodating even when the lines are long and people are crazy. Today was just the worst. Most times I let things go but the cashiers behavior was the worst I've seen here. read more

In these days of mega-marts, this Safeway has actually become one of the smaller grocery stores. But it's still well-stocked. It's a little pricier than comparable grocery stores around town, probably just because it's in Manoa. They've put a lot of organics in the produce section, and in general around the store you can get organic, but it's clearly still a secondary priority. Local produce is not easy to find. It gets very busy around 5:30-6pm, when people are stopping on the way home from work. I actually come here to grab quick meals and snacks, more than anything. Pre-packaged sushi is decently priced, and they have decent sandwiches and a hot bar. read more

Safeway is dependable for most grocery needs and located in a convenient spot.

I used to live in Manoa and my family still lives there. We're too lazy to shop anywhere else. It is pretty expensive, but for all the lazy folks in Manoa it'll do. I bet that now that the gas prices are high it's validated to shop here. Some of my friends and my family's friends work here and like previous reviews the people that work here are very friendly and nice. As for the produce and meat the last time I shopped there it was good quality. If you shopped at any Safeway they're all pretty much the same, but what I like about this one is that it has a large selection of food items. read more

Good selection and clean. Much better than the local wal mart. And better than my grocery at home

Oh I am writing specifically about the deli section. We were there at about 1115 and there is only one person helping the whole counter. We could not wait that long to pick up our order. Also the person helped the lady get a sandwich ready and then technically we War next but a man came after us and stood in the sandwich line. The lady started to help him before helping us. We ended up walking out. I do feel sorry for the lady. They should have a ticket stub that people can pull so they go in the right order. also a little more staff could help. We were on a timeline and so we decided not to order because we would be too late to deliver the food to the office. read more

I don't normally buy groceries from here but usually stop in to grab lunch. Either something from the deli, usually a sandwich or a poke bowl. It looks nice & clean & never have had a bad experience the few times I've been here. Parking is shared with various other businesses so it can be hit or miss when looking for a space. read more

Seems a little odd to write a review about Safeway ... But why not? LOL Prior to my Safeway experience, I always thought all grocery stores were created equal. We'd stop at whatever was nearest, and if we were driving, well, then we'd just go to the next nearest grocery store. Coming from a very small town with only mom and pop grocery stores, anything else was a luxury. However, when I had to stay in Manoa for an extended period of time, Safeway became just that. The one stop go to shop. And over time, I became accustomed, and one might even say, spoiled. After going to other Safeways, I became convinced that this one at Manoa Marketplace and the Safeway on Beretania and Piikoi are my absolute favorites. First of all, its not dim or dingy looking like some other ones. Its very clean and isn't too crowded and the lights aren't turned way down as if trying to seduce customers (I swear there are some Foodlands and Times that are like that). They have a decent selection of organic produce, which makes me happy - I don't have to drive a million miles away to Kahala to go to Whole Foods. (Sarcasm people, lighten up, I know its not THAT far) And lets be honest, when I was pregnant, the most important section for me was the bakery and the hot food Lol!! The bakery in the Manoa Safeway kept their stuff stocked always! Sometimes I got to other Safeways and they barely have any cakes, desserts, or pastries. Their hot foods section seemed to always have fresh hot items. It didn't look like the whole chicken was sitting their all day long. Lol I think I like this one more because the staff was super friendly, they were always well stocked, they always had what I wanted or needed, and the overall cleanliness/neatness of the place was just so awesome. And parking is never a problem! I am not on Oahu anymore, but when I do go back, I go to Manoa just to go to the Marketplace there and you better believe that Safeway is one place I stop in at. read more

This is the worst market I've ever been to. Lines are almost ALWAYS looooong. They run out of common items pretty quickly. Every time I shop there things like buttermilk, heavy cream, cilantro are out. Come on, this isn't rocket science. Plus this is the UNIVERSITY district. Update the damn store, have self-checkout availability, make sure your shelves are stocked with high-demand items, OPEN MORE LINES, ESPECIALLY between 4-6 pm. I so so SO wish there were a Wegman's here. It is a SUPER supermarket, totally 1-stop shopping with great customer service (golf carts to haul people who have difficulty walking, a great kids' play area with a security guard & only one-way in, a mini-post office & bank. I could go on, but I'd make you all sad & don't want to do that to the greatest Yelpers ever:-) C'mon, Safeway, let's enter the 21st century. read more

The flowers are dead!! It's so ugly. Management needs to take care of the florist designer.

Mostly positive experiences over the years. Sure, there are times when lines get long, but the staff have a positive, friendly attitude. Salmon poke and spicy ahi are my prefered choices here. Pleny of parking and various entering/exiting spots in the shopping plaza. read more

Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

hi everybody! I went grocery shopping at Safeway today - I had fun afterwards I stopped off at Starbucks before my dad and mom came to give me a ride home in our sedan/car. --- At Safeway today I encountered a long line of foof aficionados. I was contemplating buying some Martinelli but instead got a grab bag of mandarin oranges, and some Crystal Light Lemondade --- and JET! p.s. me thinks we have party by Mystique Productions - San rio Hello Kitty Jams (alternate name: oh--- you had me at hello! why wait for Aloha!? ) (hehe --- =) Sandy pen name sandio was at Down to Earth and used her EBT Electronic Balance Transfer card to purchase Hansense Sugar Cane drink! Safeway Manoa has the worst customer service of any grocery store in the world I have been to! Since Albertsons purchased tghe campany there have been even more massive cutbacks on the hours of the cashiers. THEY even complain about it, not because of the lost income but because of the customer inconvenience. They have now filled all the isles with stacks of product that turn the store into an obstacle course rather than a supermarket, Manoa residence have complained for years to no avail. Stay AWAY!!!! read more

Since I was looking for Zevia colas, I was very pleased that I was able to travel all the way over to this location to buy it. Believe me, it was well worth the bus ride over here because I found out that the other locations did not have theirs until either today or tomorrow. I really would like to give a big thank you to Gary for informing me that they had the Zevia colas at this location after the previous stores were out of stock and he did return my call, which I really appreciate. So if I ever need to come back to this Safeway, I can..I hope that I can be a return customer to this store as well as being able to keep shopping shere. I would like to see is self checkouts, which will make this a trip worthwhile and I will totally recommend this location as a alternative backup store if cannot find what I am looking for. read more

I should NOT judge the many by actions of a few but hey I gotta report this. Bout 10 years ago I went to the POKE counter. There I met a young man who truly did NOT belong in customer service. He CONDESCENDINGly corrected my pronunciation of MOKAUEA. What an asshole. MOKAUEA is the street where the best POKE ive ever had is. check it out. Also, 6 months ago I went to the deli counter at night. There was this cranky old dude behind the counter. I tried to order a sandwhich and he said he could NOT do it. Rather odd, I thought. I didnt care that much. BUT when a manager asked me if everything was alright I explained the situation. He went over to the old man and the 2 of them started arguing. LOUDLY. Id hate to have been that manager. I dont like firing people. Esp. and old person. They may need the money. But hey, its like having a baker tell you he doesnt have any bread when Its right in front of you. How awkward is that.????? Like why would this old man lie to me and not make a sandwhich. Was a bit racist or what? Fucken weird read more

I walked into The Safeway store located in Mānoa on January 5, 2020. It's been a couple years since I've visited that store. When I first walked in the door it was unbelievable that the volume of stench. It smelt like cockroach and was overwhelming. I am surprised that they are still in business I didn't purchase anything I had to walk out. I needed some kind of breathing apparatus. This is no exaggeration. The doors that I entered that store was at the bakery side. Managers, supervisors, owners please, you need to do something about this problem. read more

I'm surprised at comments from impatient people who need to slow down. As the trash can on Manoa Rd says Go Slowa in Manoa. We've been coming here at least once a week, mainly for fresh produce, since moving to Manoa 3 years ago. I can't speak highly enough about Larry the produce manager and his friendly, helpful crew. They'll readily go out of their way to find items hidden out of the way. And the $5 Friday specials? Hard to beat! read more

This store needs to hire more cashiers. There should be better costumer service for how much business this store gets. Better to go food land down the road. read more

I feel sorry for those of you that patronize this Safeway. There are terrible, inattentive cashiers, and horrible customer service here. Long story short, I would suggest a different grocery store, or drive a few miles down the road to Hawaii Kai Safeway. read more

This location obviously does not care about customer service. Today, June 19th, there's only three lanes open for check out. Check out stand 4, 6 and 7. The check out stands have over 15 people total waiting in line, some patrons with 1/2 items some with many. No worker, nor the store manager, KEITH, has taken the initiative to reduce the lines and show attention/ respect to this matter. Worst customer servicing by far. This store is receiving a one star simply because customers were not taking care of properly, customer satisfaction also a one star. read more

This is my favorite Safeway on the island. Not too big and suffocating but has everything you need. Lines are kinda long.

It's OK enough for me to go here, but this location usually seems understaffed in the check out lines. Some cashiers are nice, some are indifferent, and one was very rude. I went to Safeway during lunch, pick up some mac and cheese from the deli, and waited in the check out line. The cashier told me to come up in a hostile voice. When I noticed that the price of my mac and cheese was inaccurate. I informed the cashier, and she talked back to me with sassy attitude and fixed the price. I told her that I was just telling her the price was wrong. Instead of apologizing or doing anything to diffuse the situation, she replied "Well, people make mistakes." Not the wittiest response, and she didn't even attempt to address the issue. It seemed like she only wanted to "one up" me. In fact, that's something a fussy first-grader would say. read more

i tried creating my own sandwich and somehow got duped into an upselling. i got a simple sandwich consisting of turkey, cheese, bell peppers, onions and mayo. i wanted avocado but seeing it was an extra dollar, i passed. the lady at the counter said "oh this is like our california dreamin' sandwich but without the bacon. ill let you get the avocado for free since you don't have bacon." before i could really say much she started to give me a healthy spread of avocado. "ok cool, score??" or so i thought.... turns out i got charged for their specialty sandwiches. damn it!! i think i got ripped off since the signature sandwich has bacon...i got juked. the bread was huge so i basically ate it open faced. if i was gonna get avocado i would've passed on the cheese. next time i gotta be more careful of how i order stuff :/ read more

The Safeway has the most unfriendly staff. I shopped there one morning with one lighted check out open. As i moved my cart into the lane, the clerk yelled at me, do you have less than 15 items? i responded, where else was i to go. Thank you so much for continuing to sell the pumpkin Ghiradelli choc chip cookies. 2 days after Thanksgiving Pali SW said they were not going to have them anymore!! And Beretania SW has not had them. I wrote these up as one of the "5 things we love" in the Advertiser one year. they are the best! The cashier today was really nice & very cheery. Will be going back to this store more. read more

I normally do most of my shopping at Safeway but after seeing this moldy mochi still on the shelves tonight, 3 days after the sell by date, I may start doing my shopping elsewhere. I always just assumed that someone went through the baked goods daily and pulled out the expired products....two days maybe...but leaving food out long enough to grow mold is disgusting and unacceptable. If I come back you can bet that I'll be taking a closer look before buying any of their breads, bagels, donuts, etc and I would advise everyone else to do the same. read more

I would give Safeway more stars if not for a few things. One - Safeway is totally overpriced compared to Longs or Foodland... depending on what you need to buy. I was looking for a mabo tofu prepared food thing and it was $5 and I would need to buy 2 to make what I needed for dinner. $10 not including the tofu and the meat. Seriously... you can buy those things for like $2 at Longs. Gah! Another thing, Safeway never seems to fail me in messing up my receipts and overcharging me for stuff. They overcharged me four dollars for sprouts and my husband said he was too tired to go back to fight it. I would have but I wasn't feeling good and about to hurl. Another time, I got overcharged for peaches... the lady rang me up incorrectly for something completely different. That time I did get it fixed but sometimes it's hard to pay attention to everything they're ringing up because it changes depending on when you key in your Safeway card so it's best to look at your receipt RIGHT after you get done checking out. Otherwise, it can be a costly mistake... literally. Like my peaches, she charged me like $6 more than I should have been charged. So annoying to have to stand in a customer service line or in line again just to get it fixed. It's happened at least 50% of the time I go to Safeway... at least... more like 75% it seems. Inexcusable really. Especially since they're charging me an arm and a leg anyway. Otherwise, they're good in the fact that they're open 24 hours! Their flowers are pretty. For the most part, their people are friendly even if somewhat incompetent. I am not sure whose fault it was for the overcharges sometimes because they are just ringing it up but maybe their system didn't get updated for the sales? I don't know... either way, it sucks sometimes to have to go back to Safeway. Oh my husband likes their Chicago Southsider sandwich... he says Safeway Manoa is good for them... other Safeways are stingy on their toppings but here, they top them off quite nicely =). read more
