Don't let the clerks rip you off! I should have received 22 monopoly game pieces but she only gave me eight! Manager told me I had to come back (into the store, during COVID-19 operations) if I wanted the rest of my game pieces! No thank you! I was upset enough that you don't hold customers accountable to wearing face masks in the store plus I actually saw a clerk with her mask below her nose! Come on, mask are to protect others from your germs. Have some Aloha for your customers! read more

This is our local safe. It's not perfect but it's ours and we love it. They've been working hard keeping things stocked and in the current climate, keeping things clean. They're also making it safer for people to shop, marking areas for safe social distancing, disinfecting surface, etc. Its hard out there and these folk are working hard to make it easy for us read more

Don't even think about getting service at this Safeway. There is ONE person assigned to the deli and when she is called to make a sandwich, she's out of order for at least 30 minutes. Then there are the THREE workers taking care of the sushi kiosk that have zero interest in helping customers. It's a total joke of a grocery store. They should send their managers to the Publix stores in the south to learn how to actually run a productive establishment. read more

Daytime cashiers are very rude and lack any sense of aloha to customers. They don't smile and/or greet you, they slam/throw the items down as they scan, don't thank you for shopping at Safeway, make you feel like you're a nuisance and an intrusion into their royal lives. It's like they're doing you a favor by checking out your groceries. My suggestion: QUIT! Safeway Manoa has been there for many years and, for most of those years, the customer service was great. Just lately, the cashiers, except for a few, behave badly, very badly. If you hate your job so much, please do the Manoa community a favor: LEAVE!!! Quit contaminating everyone with such negativity! read more

This Safeway is one of the worst on the island. They are not diligent at rotating produce or dairy after expiration dates. The employees are not friendly, not even smiles. The worst thing about this Safeway is that they are notorious with extra long lines. They have no problem with opening only the minimal amount of cashier lines. And, the cashiers themselves do not move with any sense of urgency. Here is a picture of a routine Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. read more

They most definitely don't deserve a single star! They have the worst customer service! We are all waiting for counter help in the Deli section. Not one employee acknowledged us waiting for counter service. The first gentleman said he waited 10 minutes and they wouldn't acknowledge him. He finally said forget it! The next lady tried getting their attention but they turned around and walked away! What the hell! After seeing that I left too and went to Fendu Boulangerie and got my sandwiches! Just a friendly reminder that Seafood dept starts closing/packing up at 5p or earlier 330/4p if Seafood is running a 1-man shift. Meat department goes hm at 6p. Their self check out is amazing. It is a Safeway, so why review? This is one of my favorite Safeways. I tend to shop at night and I've never had to wait in a long line here. It seems like the Kapahulu and Beretainia locals get backed up at night and it is almost like they are surprised people are shopping at night. This is going to seem silly but I like their bakery because they consistently put too much fruit on their large tarts. It is almost as if they are trying to see how much they can put on. I also find that there are more marked down items and items on special compared with the other Safeway stores. And last, who can resist $5/dozen donuts on Friday. I usually get 2 dozen to bring to work. read more

Manager Curtis=fail. Thanks bro, leave inexperienced cashiers with little to no backup. No problem 2 cash registers with 4+ people in each line and a ton more in the store. Soda stocking is very important. So important you can't come do back up or an override for over 5 minutes. Yeah, I timed it after the 2nd call for help. So when there is a line of now 6 + people you can't be bothered to even say something like "Thanks for your patience". read more

I've been going to Safeway Manoa for over 6 decades on my own. I admit, during the pandemic I got spoiled and got use to eating takeouts. Less Safeway visits, more take outs. I finally recently got the hang of going to safeway for takeout meals, it's been great. I do notice the Deli ppl are not friendly, with the exception of the mgr. I'm extremely friendly and normally get along with everyone as a past regional sales mgr for a Fortune 500 Company and having my own businesses as well, I get along with everyone. Lately, I have been getting this deli worker named Gloria Francisco. Very mean, does not smile, snappy, not at all approachable. I guess she feels she can get away with it since she never wears her name tag. I requested 2 breakfasts and ask for tomatoes and spinach, she put everything in except that. I just bit my tongue and said nothing. Then she burnt my bread, jet black and started using it. I said softly, "Could u put a little love into it" with a smile . She snapped, walked away, and I had to asked another deli person to make my 2 breakfast. The entire time Gloria stared me down from afar, not in a nice way and even sarcastically shouted across the deli from 20 feet away "She wants love in it!!!" read more

Rating: 1.5 stars I visited Safeway in Manoa on a Wednesday about 5 pm. This location was not busy and I parked in front the store. The market was clean outside; I did not see stray shopping carts in the lot. The store was well lit, appeared organized, and was easy to navigate through different departments. I headed to the Deli to pick up several items for a party. I was the only customer in that section. There were two Deli clerk and one Sushi clerk; each appeared to be doing their own thing. I continued to peruse the items in the Deli case for about five minutes before calling over to them asking for some assistance. The older of the two Deli clerks told me I could be helped..."in just a minute." When the Deli clerk came over to where I waited, I received no apology or "Thank you for waiting. How may I assist you?" Instead, I received a rather curt acknowledgement, "What can I get for you?" The Deli department gets a poor Customer Service rating today. As I stood in the Express Line, I noted two people ahead of me. When it was my turn to pay for my items, the Cashier did not greet me or make any eye contact. My items were scanned and packaged as I awaited my Total. I noticed the Cashier just stared off...to...I do not know where. He did not tell me how much I owed for my items. He just stood there not making eye contact. I stood in place too. I looked at him, then I looked at his name tag -- Chris. I glanced over at the register screen to see how much I owed. I put a $20 bill on the counter. Chris took the $20 and handed over my change. I said, "Thank you." Surprise! I still did not receive any response from Chris. I saw Chris repeat the process again with the next customer in line. Scanning items, no greeting, no smile...just scanning in zombie-mode. I grabbed my package and walked out of the store shaking my head. Wow. Just...wow. How can I sum up my experience here? Safeway in Manoa, I suggest reviewing the Mission and Vision Statements with your employees. I experienced the worst Customer Service while grocery shopping in a very long time. The retail food industry is unique in that grocery stores all pretty much carry the same products. Except for small and varying price adjustments and layout of the store - the only real difference between competing grocery stores is the kind of shopping experience a customer has while in the store. I assume most Supermarket Managers know this, therefore each store needs to make every effort possible to set themselves apart from the rest. By the way, most of the Fried Chicken was extra crispy on the outside, however, it was very dry on the inside. One guest bit into a drumstick that was not cooked well! I will definitely not come here for Fried Chicken again. read more

The way this Safeway is run is so bad that it's become a running family joke. Being out of perishables is a common occurrence and lines are out of control because they usually only have a couple of checkout lines that are open (and no self-checkout options). Last weekend might have been the worst. I clearly had more than 15 items and I was loathe to stand in the express line but after walking by all the other checkout lines and seeing that none of them were open I stood in the express lane to see what I should do. Sure enough, I was nicely ejected from the line for too many items and given a lane number to stand in and wait because someone would be "right back". Over 15 minutes later I was still waiting with no one in sight when the manager or someone in charge walked by and I (angrily I'll confess) stated that I was unhappy with the situation. Turns out that I was never supposed to have been sent to a checkout line that didn't have an employee working in it (go figure). I hesitate to add this part because I truly do not actually think that I should get any special privilege, but keep in mind that I am visibly pregnant and so note that this is how they treat their pregnant customers. It also takes me a while to find items because they tend to move their product around. I was looking for packaged hollandaise sauce and headed to the baking goods section. A quick check on the Safeway app showed that it should be in "condiments, spices & bake" aisle. Since those are two different aisles, I tried the condiments aisle to no avail before going line by line searching. I found the sauce package in the Hispanic and Asian food aisle because it was made by the same company (McCormick's) that made taco seasoning. Ummmm what??? For convenience (it's so close to my house) and safety (I sometimes have gone at 2 or 3 am and have always felt comfortable) I give it 2 stars but I have actually planned my days around going to other grocery stores just to avoid having to wait in the crazy (and yet unnecessary) long lines and finding them out of common goods. read more

This Safeway I like because its super chill, all the employees are nice and friendly and the lines are never long. There's lots of lot parking too. Definitely would shop here a lot if I lived in Mānoa. read more

This Safeway is the worst! I'm pretty sure they are only open because they have a captured population in Manoa that often don't want to leave the valley. I'm often guilty of this and I regret the decision Every. Single. Time. You'd think that after all these years they would know how to staff their cashiers appropriately--but nope! It is always a clusterF of long lines and slooooowwww registers. You're better off leaving the valley and going to foodland on Beratania. You'd still be done faster if you went there because they are that much more efficient- not to mention foodland's products and products are overall superior to that if Safeway. read more

Much improved. Now automated cashier available. I go there more often. Thanks for the improvement

What can you write about one Safeway that you can't write about in a different Safeway? I never go to Manoa Valley. It's very nice and all. But I'm just never there. Truth be told, I didn't even know there was a Safeway there. I wondered if the people who work there live around the area and if not how far did they have to travel. I mention the workers because that's what stood out to me. This older gentleman saw my gf and I in line and quickly jumped on register to help us check out. He got onto a register to help out his co-workers at a busy time. In my book, great customer service. If there were more people like him, there would be less 1-2 star reviews I'm sure. Regretfully, I did not get the mans name. We only had 1 item. A good experience, none the less. read more

I give 3 stars because really it's mediocre type of supermarket. I remember back at school, the marketing professor emphasized Safeway's service is so good, everybody goes there for their service. But not at this Safeway, I'd say. The groceries are expensive and whatever is on sale, it's either gone or almost rotten (for quick sale?!) Staff member are OK, but the customer service is horrible. I heard that someone went to the counter to confront them with price wrongfully charged and customer service switched out the price tag just to cheat. read more

OMG when will Foodland open a location in Manoa?? This Safeway is the absolute worst grocery store I have ever been to, for almost every reason. I went there at high time, 4:30PM last Wed, after a long day at work, there were THREE checkers and at least 20 PEOPLE IN EACH LINE. My line had 25!!! WTF?? Don't take your break at peak shopping time, it isn't brain science, Manager! And the checkers, what?? The one I had today had chummy conversations w/the two men in front of me, obviously her friends. When I got up there, nothing, not a "Thank you for waiting" (which of course I had to, since she was gabbing so much, apparently can't talk story and check at the same time), not even a "Hello." Maybe she doesn't talk to strangers. Maybe she doesn't talk to orange Tabbies. LAME. The other day one of the checkers YELLED at me for not having a # on the bag of bulk lentils I was buying. I apologized. She was thumbing through the code book, apparently reading isn't her strong suit, I found it immediately upside down. She continued to yell at me and explain as if I were a 5 year old that there are ties that I write the # on. No sh*t. I already apologized, and I meant it. Thanks, mom. Two words for you and they aren't happy birthday. I hate this freaking store. Yet they have everyone in Manoa by the testicles because they are the closest place. I'm boycotting, as of today. read more

I could give them a ZERO star. I just went in there to buy distilled water. The lady rang it up as 4 something. I told her it is wrong and she told me it wasn't. I walked back to get a different one because I saw the tag said $1.69. I even took a pic of it and walked back up to show here. Now she tells me "You are buying distilled water" I told here "Yeah I know. I buy it here all the time" she then says she will walk back and check. I follow her back, show her where it is and then she tells me again it's wrong and rips the sticker off and tries to hide it. I said "I buy it here every week. It's always under $2". She again tells me I'm wrong and I say "Fine I'll just go to Longs and get it" she then says "Ok" and just walks off. What a bitch. Nobody should go here. Usually the lines are 10-15 deep and they only open 3 registers. This place is terrible. read more

This has always been my favorite Safeway store to shop in Honolulu. Now more than ever during this time, I haven't encountered a line to get in yet. This Safeway has the most of everything in stock, except for essential items. Their produce is in pristine condition. My only complaint is their self-check outs. They're slow, the credit card machine jams up. Takes forever to get your receipt. Besides that customer service is great excellent. read more

My husband and I appreciate the signage posted at the door of Manoa Safeway telling patrons we may only enter if wearing a mask and also a limit of 75 max patrons at a time. While shopping this morning a man walked down the wrong way in the aisle we were in and was NOT wearing a mask. I politely informed him that this was a state mandate now and he started to question me. Luckily, a worker named Brittney happened by sweeping up and I let her know he didn't have a mask so he then told her he didn't see a sign (it is posted at eye level on the entrance) and he had one in his car so she told him to leave his groceries to retrieve from his car. Although we appreciated Safeway having a notice up we did not see anyone at the doors to ensure that people are wearing masks. It would be nice to have someone monitor that. The man did return to his car and wore his mask when I saw him in the produce section. Upon leaving Safeway we saw an employee wiping down all carts with a disinfectant. Nice! read more

I had the idea to save a little time by pre-ordering breakfast for a brunch meeting I had. I wasn't sure if Safeway in Manoa did anything like that but decided to try anyway. To my surprise, Shan at the Safeway in Manoa gave me amazing service, took my order, and was incredibly expedient. And besides all of the great customer service she gave, her breakfast sandwiches tasted amazing! She made toasted Croissants with eggs, spinach, melted cheese, and freshly sliced tomato. read more

While on our way to visit the Manoa Falls on scooters, with only hours left on our vacation to Honolulu, we stopped in this Safeway to refill our water and get some snacks. I bought a bottle of SmartWater ($1.79), a container of poke garlic soybeans ($4.64 - priced by weight), and an 8oz sea salt grinder ($6.99 - with dried vinegar and red chili flakes too). Sandi was our cashier and she was really nice as I checked out with my 3 items. It was really easy to find the few items we wanted and service at the deli was very friendly. The deli girl recommended these soybeans and I'm glad she did - they were delicious! I actually had a few left by the time we boarded our flight and wanted so badly to snack on them during the 5.5 hour airplane ride home, but they were a little too fragrant and I didn't want to make all the other passengers jealous. A $0.05 cent deposit was charged for the water bottle, and a $0.01 fee was also on the receipt under the sea salt grinder. (I wonder what that penny was for - because it was glass perhaps?) It's super yummy salt and reminds me of our great vacation every time I put it on food now that we're back at home. read more

So done with this store. Counted the check out lines tonight as I walked in. 12 people or more waiting in every line! By the time I got to check out nothing had changed! I just happened to have the store manager checking me out and he said the only other available person is on "lunch." I said 'well obviously you need more people!' He says 'corporate won't allow any more hours.' He says 'corporate won't listen to us.' Well corporate needs to listen to the fact that I have been shopping at Safeway with my mother since I was a child, since 1964, and now as an adult. That is thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars spent at Safeway stores! I have absolutely had it with Safeway. And let's not even go into the fact that the store is not well stocked and items are often out. That's a whole other issue! I was willing to put up with that but no more! Foodland here I come. 5 stars for service! I gave it 3 stars because it's an much older store. Also it's one of the smallest Safeways I've been to. Bathroom was not very clean and was out of paper towel. I highly recommend it if selection isn't a big deal. read more

I wish I liked this place more. It is not the worst grocery store and it certainly is not the best. The cashiers are SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. I have stopped coming here because there is always a line and only two cash registers open and they move as though we all have nothing better to do than read the People magazine on the rack. My major complaint about this Safeway is the produce. Too many times have we purchased stuff that goes bad quickly. And we once bought sunflower seeds that were super expensive and were rancid. I come here when I absolutely have no other option. I even go to the Kahala Whole Foods before here and this Safeway is 10 minutes walking from my house. Prices seem comparable to Whole Foods so why should I shop here? read more

Seriously, what IS it with this Safeway? Every time there's a sale, they run out of the goods very quickly -- and then they never seem to restock during the rest of the sale period. Not surprising, really, as they don't restock or clean up during the slow hours, either: customers (I'm assuming) leave the frozen food sections a mess, and it'll stay that way that for a while before anyone gets around to straightening up. The only good things about this Safeway are its convenient location (it shares a parking lot with a number of shops and restaurants) and the awesomely helpful dude who orders the organic products. But if I'm trying to find something that's on sale, I'm going to the new Kapahulu location instead! read more

Most of the time, I don't shop at Safeway, because the prices are way too high. However, there are a few things I like about this Safeway, and when I need certain things, I will come here: 1. The Location. I love Manoa. It's my favorite place on earth. Alas, I am not one of the rich haoles who can afford to live here. 2. The service. Since "small kid time" when I went to school nearby, I have noticed the cashiers here to be the friendliest I have ever encountered in a Safeway. 3. The bakery. This is a good place to get a haupia cake, or to get a decorated birthday cake. 4. Great selection of cheeses in the deli section to go with some nice wine from the wine section when having guests over. 5. Location. 6. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! read more

I wanted to sign up for a safeway card. I waited in line and asked the cashier lady if I can sign up for the safeway card. Safeway Manoa, everything a supermarket should be. Not too big, or too small, but just right (and I'm no goldilocks) Seriously, I don't think I have ever had a bad experience in here. Don't buy "fresh" artisan bread from their bakery. Time and time again, I have tapped the loaves to test for hollowness and freshness. Looking for that crispy crust experience. Roll the dice, take some home. DRRRRRY CRUMB. CARDBOARD CRUST. ONLY FLAVOR IS FROM THE OVERPOWERING TOPPINGS OF CARAWAY SEEDS. NO BALANCE OF FLAVOR. Inside chokingly dry, no yeasty flavor. Yuck. Oh, did I say it was a tad dry? Don't buy pita bread from their shelves. They only have one overpriced brand and it's DRRRRRY. Crack apart dry. Inability to stuff, dry. Difficult to swallow, dry. Yes, why yes, I did indeed say their bread was dry. To add insult to injury, I told the cashier that I had to run out to the car for my Safeway membership card. She said, OK just put your dry bread down here and come on back when you have it, Not finding the card in my car but finding the cashier as busy as hell, I picked up my stuffiz and went to a shorter line. I mentioned to the clerk that I thought I had my card but didn't. She said, "Oh! Just give me your phone number!" That did it, card number looked up and discount scanned. Rude, lazy former clerk made me run out to the car and back instead of offering to enter my phone number in for me. Worst of all, after trying to have faith and buying artisan bread from them three times, the bread that I took home was........dry. I actually threw the last loaf away. It wasn't fit for garden mulch. The best part of all of this is that i am now baking my own artisan bread. And it is awesome. It's so moist and chewy and the crust is crackly, crunchweity! Not dry. No. Not dry.... read more

What a useless store manager Albert is. Tried to report a problem, and he abruptly said thank you for calling and hung up. Nearly half the time I shop at this safeway I experience a problem. Recently, when I used my telephone number, I was not getting the discounts, let alone the Friday deals. When I asked the cashier, he just scrubbed his shoulders. People from my line and all went to customer service, where they were helpful. BEWARE OF THE AP, even after scanning the app, I had no discounts applied 2 weeks in a row. I had to dispute last week when the cashier repeatedly tried to charge me $118, I paid $42 and some change. Again, today, they repeatedly tried to charge me $68, I ended up paying $32 and some change. But the most appalling thing is their managementq. Such unprofessional employees ruin it for all the other hard workers who take pride in their work. Absolutely the worst experience at this safeway. Someone brought a special colossal cake from Safeway to a party ...I spoke with 3 different workers including the bakery manager and I was told they have to check and will call me back. They sell this cake by the slice so looking to pierced the whole thing as a my coworker did a few weeks ago . No one cares or really gives a rip...so sad when you are trying to hard to spend $50 on a cake and Safeway simply doesn't want my business. The Manoa Safeway is one of the few surviving old-style stores. Not to knock the fancy Kapahulu and Beretania locations, but sometimes you just want to get groceries without walking the length of a few football fields or taking your cart in an elevator/escalator. This store is very convenient to my home in Manoa, and parking is never a problem. The checkout lines aren't light-speed, but I've never seen them make a mistake or take an unduly amount of time bagging my groceries. My two problems with this location are the culinarily (sure, it's a word!) oblivious staff and the food prices. When I asked if they had pancetta and marscapone, the staffer replied "I don't even know what those are." At the Kapahulu location, I had to explain orzo to a befuddled clerk. The checkout makes my wallet hurt a little more than I'd like, but that's the nature of Hawaii food prices, I suppose. read more

This is hands down my favorite Safeway. It's never too crowded and most of the employees are extremely friendly. The selection is your average Safeway fare. While I readily admit I'm no Giada in the kitchen, I really just go for the basics: eggs, milk, bread, etc. I appreciate that the store is relatively small compared to the other locations, so I don't have to embark on a long journey to find my items. The Deli counter is also a great place to grab a quick, cheap lunch. Cons: During peak hours (4-6 pm), they typically only have 2-3 check out stands open and their old-timer cashiers tend to lack a sense of urgency as they favor briefly talking story with the regulars over expediency. Parking: Ample, but may be difficult to find during the lunchtime hours (11 am-1 pm). Fun fact: I was told by my Wisconsinite cheese-bleeding friend that he answered an online survey and commented on their lack of a cheese selection. The manager promptly responded and noted his recommendations. So, for you cheese-loving folks, be on the look out for a (possible) expanded cheese selection. read more
