My birthday dinner at Ryujin Sushi in Bridgewater was SO good and now has taken the title as my new local go-to spot! The sushi was incredibly fresh, and I loved sitting at the sushi bar watching the chefs work. We started with a complimentary little fish dish that was perfectly crusted and served over a fresh bed of greens - I loved this. I also had a mango mojito made extra sweet that was delicious and the lightest fried calamari that was crisp & wasn't oily at all. For sushi, we had the TikTok Roll which had coconut shrimp, pineapple, and crab meat inside, topped with salmon and avocado, mango sauce, and coconut flakes. I would come back just for this roll alone - all the flavors of the different ingredients made this taste INSANE. We also had the shrimp tempura, salmon avocado, and spicy tuna rolls - these were just perfect. This was such a great meal overall and loved the vibes inside. As someone who only eats vegetarian sushi, I HIGHLY recommend! There's SO many options! My husband ordered various non-vegetarian rolls and rated them highly as well. For apps we had salad, miso soup, and spicy edamame. Needless to say, not one was left behind. I also ordered a side of noodles and they weren't bad, but the flavor was not my preference. They had a sweeter taste than I was expecting. I'd also like to highlight that my husband noted the miso soup as one of the best he's ever had. Our drinks from the bar took some time, but not overly long. The lychee mojito was great. The service was friendly and attentive. We made a reservation online and I'm glad we did because it was definitely busy for dine in and takeout. I'd describe the restaurant as modern meets casual. This was easily one of the top 10 best udon dishes I've ever had! I was honestly shocked because when it was first placed in front of me, it looked so simple and almost bland. Somehow, they packed so much flavor into the dish, and I absolutely loved it. The sushi was pretty standard compared to other places I've been to, but the udon was definitely the standout for me. The interior is gorgeous, and you can't go wrong sitting at a table or at one of the bars. They also have sake here, and the selection is great! Every time I come here my meal is delicious. The restaurant was very busy and the young hostess seemed overwhelmed. What bothered us was when we asked about how much longer it might be, we were given a rude remark. Our service throughout dinner was also rushed- plates being taken before people were finished eating. The food was truly outstanding, though, which made up for the sub-par service. We had the spicy salmon crispy rice appetizer, a seaweed salad, and three special rolls. More than enough to fill us. This is the best sushi place in New Jersey, all things considered. The price point is very reasonable for the quality, and the sushi is very good. The yellowtail is flavorful without being too fishy and the salmon cuts are consistently high-quality. The red tuna is alright. Albacore and sea bass are both good. I would definitely recommend trying the rolls and combinations here as well. The sushi is understandably this restaurant's high point, and I cannot emphasize the quality and care enough. Even the plating is beautiful. The environment here is very welcoming. Even when it's completely full, the music and conversations are never overly loud. Used to be BYOB but now has a drinks menu and bar. I haven't tried the sake, but the NJ wines are decent. The desserts are limited. The oreo tempura ice cream is interesting though and unique to this location. I wouldn't recommend getting any desserts, though. I'd fully recommend coming here! I stopped in for my first time craving ramen and I was surprised off the walk in! I loved the aesthetic of the restaurant, especially the wood accents on the walls. I loved that from our table we were able to see where some of the chefs prepared the rolls and sashimi. The ramen was amazing; great pieces of meat and a lot of ramen noodles (my favorite lol).The rolls were fantastic and I look forward to trying way more! For the first time I picked up from Ryujin, I ordered the spicy miso ramen with tonkatsu broth, and the flavor and depth of the broth was delicious! It was just the right level of spicy for me, and had a good amount of noodles. I also liked the toppings of egg and bok choy; my only preference is that I could customize or add toppings, but I still would order it again! The second time I ordered a seaweed salad, Bridgewater roll, Double Trouble roll (no jalapeño), and nigiri. I didn't like the seaweed salad, the mango didn't compliment the seaweed salad and it was extra liquidy than typical of seaweed salads on the bottom. All of the nigiri pieces were so fresh and I really enjoyed the Bridgewater roll. It was my first time trying seared toro (on the double trouble roll), and I didn't prefer the flavor though my husband enjoyed it. This is by far the best sushi I've found in central Jersey since moving from North Jersey. I've found it difficult to find high level sushi in Somerset/Mercer counties. Had the 12 piece tasting menu. Every piece was unique. Really good quality fish and the preparation brought out the flavors even further. Was there on a Friday as my second visit and it was PACKED! With a wide variety of curated specials, there is always something new to try! The quality of the fish as well as the fish to rice ratio is always on point. Food - loved, loved, loved all the food we ordered: 1. 6 Uni each (2 each of California, Japanese, Maine) - All delicious! 2. 1 Spicy Seafood Soup, which I shared with my daughter. Tasty, not too spicy. 3. 1 Kinoko Salad - shared it with my daughter. Delicious. 4. 1 Shitake Salad - I love Shitake, but this Shitake tasted different, it didn't taste like Shitake, maybe because of the dressing. Also, I didn't get any sesame seed and garlic chips with my salad. 5. Crispy Calamari Salad - My daughter shared it with me. It was good, but I wish it had tentacles. 6. I ordered 1 sushi each - Octopus, Ebi, Red Clam, Tobiko (yellow) 7. We shared Lazy Uni, Butterfly Effect Roll, Soft Shell Crab Roll 8. My friend and I had an early dinner at Ryujin and my expectations were exceeded! The interior of the restaurant was nicer than your average local sushi restaurant and they even have omakase as an option. Like many other sushi spots, they had creative names for their specialty rolls. We shared a spicy kani salad to start, and ordered the salmon mango roll, eel cucumber, bite me roll, and hanky panky roll. This review is strictly for the Omakase Experience only. Apparently the omakase counter here opened 3 weeks ago. I happened to come by random during the weekend and noticed the addition of the counter. The food was ok . The first half of the menu was all courses . Lots of sauces used in the opening dishes. The second half of the menu was all the nigiri. I personally enjoyed two of the nigiris that night ( the sable fish & the shima aji) Service was good . The owner was the main person clearing the dishes along with getting any refills we needed during the meal . The placement of the counter is very good . It's off to the side located on the expanded side of the restaurant. You get the slight feel of exclusivity . Overall: For being open for only 3 weeks , not bad . Coming from someone who does omakase tasting somewhat often. ( both nj and nyc ) I definitely see areas where they could improve. It's a decent start but it has all the potential to be exceptional. 1. Menu - I think (personally) that the chef could have it be more nigiri based . In total there was only 9 actual nigiri during the whole omakase . At a price point of $135 PP ( they should do a 15 course offering instead) They can definitely start with a Chawanmushi to open the omakase with . Then delve into the nigiri from there. There's a vast majority of nigiri options that the chef could explore. ( scallop, aji, madai , akami, boton ebi, kohada,sawara, etcc) The chef used the blow torch quite a bit during the omakase ( I think the use of the blow torch is more so for showmanship rather then helping with bringing out the flavor. I think it actually masks the true flavor of the ingredients) 2. Service/ Counter help The omakase counter seats 8 guests total. I feel like a second chef would greatly help here that way one chef does 4 seats and the other chef does the other 4 seats. There was also a time we were given a small white plate during the omakase but it never actually was utilized for a dish. I think the addition of one other person to solely focus on the omakase area would be a great help too. The place is definitely a hit and if they really want the counter to be successful going forward I think they could afford hiring additional staff just to focus on the counter. read more
