Not sure how or why this place has a 4.5. Food isn't bad. But certainly not authentic Cajun. Gumbo cannot be homemade and had crawfish in it with a very peppery tomato base. Shrimp are imported in the heart of Cajun country. Shame on you!! Anyway, not a bad meal but I'm sure you could find much better. read more

Highly recommend!!! The menu is extensive and it all sounded good. I had the hot sausage po-boy with fries and my husband had the brick house which was a blackened chicken sandwich with bacon and melted cheese on it, he got fried pickles for his side. Everything was A+ from the greeting as soon as you walk in to the food and atmosphere. They have plenty of outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the weather but plenty inside also. I think this place must be a food prep site for Sysco? Everything I've had from the salad, to the burger, to the chicken taste like it was either old or came out of a frozen box. The fries are also always soggy and have no seasoning or salt. If it wasn't so expensive I'd say the mediocre quality and taste would be okay but two kids and two adults you'll easily spend over $50 for really disappointing food. read more

This place is set in the middle of Madisonville town. Lots of old/new wood-frame houses in a little community by the lakefront with restaurants and bars and shops. You can take a nice stroll along the lakefront and then stop in for a bite. Great food and service and craft beers. The shrooms/swiss burger was great with lots of flavor in the meat. The same goes for the fish and shrimp tacos however, watch out for the sauce on top as it is spicy and will sneak up on you. Love the whole ambiance of this place. Y'all. I've been back home on the gulf for a few weeks now. We've eaten out several times in that time and I always get some sort of seafood, salad and gumbo. This was the best I've had so far. The fried shrimp was cooked to perfection. Light, crispy and delicate. Not greasy. And there was so much piled on my salad, that I could barely see my salad, lol! Seafood gumbo is a personal preference. That said, this gumbo was perfectly done to my preference. So delicious. And not too much rice. To me, rice is just a filler. I want the good stuff. The sweet potato fries... Yum! Crispy outside, soft, fluffy inside. That is a 2 lb boat they're spilling out of, y'all. So many I couldn't eat them all. But, you know I tried, lol! Try them with my not-so-secret sauce: ketchup and Tabasco mixed together. And the iced tea was fresh brewed, which is a big deal to me. Gotta have fresh tea. We shared the BIG Fried Seafood Platter, which had Fried Catfish, Fried Shrimp, eight Fried Oysters, Fried Crawfish Tails, Crab Cake and French Fries and Bread. Shrimp was first rate-so good. Crab cake threw me for a loop for second when it arrived because in my mind I was thinking Maryland/east coast style crab cake. I had high hopes for Rusty Pelican. Walking up to the front doors reinforced the high praise from yelp. The building looks Gina Dan inviting. The people were great- all were super friendly and easy going. The atmosphere was great too. (I went mid afternoon so it was quiet, but the staff were on point.) The environment was relaxed and looked well maintained. It felt like the people working there cared about the restaurant. All of these pluses made it a shock when I got my food. Crab cakes, gumbo, and shrimp poboy. The description of the crab cakes said "all thriller, no filler". These examples did not live up to the description. They were well cooked but the texture was homogenous throughout. No lumps of crab to be found. They tasted ok. The gumbo was underwhelming at best. The textures of the shrimp and crawfish were off/too soft as though it was frozen? The rice was chalky as well. The seasoning was good. If I was served these two dishes blindly I would guess they were frozen boxed cakes and canned gumbo. Finally, the shrimp poboy: the redeeming dish. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and the bread they were served on was absolutely delicious. Very light texture with a flaky crust. I'm not sure I'll make a point of revisiting Rusty Pelican on subsequent trips to the area. If I do, I'll either try something new or stick to the tried and true shrimp poboy. It's a shame about the food, since everything else was really nice. read more

I don't know if we were really hungry, or tired of road food, but....this meal was damned good. Fast, friendly, and full of flavor. We two hungry travelers shared the seafood platter, and there was enough for both of us, with some left over. There were strips of catfish, crawfish tails, oysters, shrimp, and a soft shell crab, as well as a crab cake, and fries, and butter drenched bread. This meal hit all the notes.
