I love this little place in Old Mandeville. The food here is great, and the service is always on point. Came here today to get out of the house on a weekday to grab a bite and spend time near the lakefront. Their gumbo is always delicious and the poboy was packed with roast beef. The service on a Friday around 2pm was prompt and polite. The seafood gumbo was a B- due to the tomato base, rice already added, and smallish shrimp. The hot sausage poboy (patties vs. links) was ok. The bread was too bready, like a hoagie bun rather than on on a crusty french bread and the "dressed" (tomatoes/lettuce) portion was meager. Two rather thin patties rounded out the po boy. My go to restaurant when I visit the NorthShore. You order at the counter and find a place to sit afterwards. The food was delivered in under 10 minutes. Plenty of seating inside and out side . Food is always fresh, flavorful, and served hot. The team is always friendly and welcoming. The menu has a wide variety of seafood ( fried grilled), burgers, sandwiches, and salads. I appreciate that. Food was great quality for the value. We were able to take our time and enjoy ourselves. Really enjoyed that this was nestled on the Corner of Girod and Monroe in the Heart of Old Mandeville. We were told this was a favorite stop for locals so we had to check it out. I went to Rusty Pelican last week. I have to say I was very disappointed. I don't know if they changed ownership or they're cutting corners. I ordered the club sandwich. Upon ordering, I asked was the bread gonna be toasted. They told me yes. When I receive the sandwich, there was only mayonnaise on one side of the sandwich and it was a three Texas toast sandwich. So it was quite dry. Also, when I got it, the bread was very white. It did not look toasted at all. I felt it, and it felt like it was just dry bread; not moist bread, but dry like they stuck it under a roller and immediately got it out. It was the driest sandwich I've ever had in my life. This place stays busy. The burgers are good and the fries are actually better than McDonald's, which is quite a feet in itself. I cannot, however recommend the prime rib sandwich. We started our afternoon with an incredible drive across the 24 mile bridge connecting Metairie, LA to Mandeville, LA (Lake Ponchartrain Causeway, the world's longest continuous bridge). It was a clear day, so the water looked amazing. We are back again!! I ordered two seafood platters for my party of four. On one platter we substituted extra fish for the oysters, and substituted fried okra (definitely, NOT on my platter!) for the fries. On my platter, I added a soft shell crab. OMG!!!! On a seafood platter is fish, shrimp, crawfish tails, oysters, carb cake, and fries. My wife and I always split the platter. It is a fantastic value! From the moment we walked into the door, we were greeted warmly as we proceeded to the order counter (you order, pay and then select a table). The lady (I was eating so hard, I who provided service at our table was super attentive throughout our meal. She made sure we had EVERYTHING we needed to make our time in the restaurant awesome. There are tables outside with large umbrellas, and lots of seating inside. Folks, come see the awesomeness of Lake Pontchartrain and taste the deliciousness of the Rusty Pelican for yourself! Great service and food at good prices. Everything was fried to perfection! The artichokes were my favorite, but my parents loved their platter. I had the burger with the fried green tomatoes, and it was so amazing I forgot to take a picture. This is a local restaurant with in and outside dining. Everything is well maintained and the toilets are clean. The fried jalapeños is a good appetizer to get. The batter really clung, making them all crunchy. We only got one little thing of ranch, two would have been best. We got the seafood platter and a soft shell crab. Everything had lots of batter making for a crunch. The crab, oysters, and something unidentifiable was a little too under cooked for my preference. Everyone here seems local nice and friendly. My husband and I ate at the Rusty pelican in Mandeville yesterday. My husband's shrimp poboy was very good. I ordered the pelican hamburger with bacon. The burger was very chewy and the meat was not staying together. I was hungry so I ate it, but I was not satisfied. The server asked how our food was and I had to tell her that the meat was not staying together and it was stiff and chewy. She said she would let him know and we left because no one came out to talk to us, very disappointed in the way the hamburger was cooked and that nobody offered an apology or say anything for that matter. Location; From my trip to Louisiana, its a nice walk from the river/lake edge which also included shopping and lake rental companies. The restaurant was very busy for lunch, but had a system down. The restaurant has a cute rustic feel. Food; I did a to-go order for lunch and ordered the Double Decker BLT, it was mighty tasty and plenty of bacon goodness, I did have to drive a bit to get to my next destination so I can not write about the french fries as they were cold and not the restaurants fault. GIANT BLOCK OF FRIED PEPPER JACK CHEESE Let me tell ya, the bacon is the least flavorable part of the sandwich, if ya can believe it. The giant fried pepper jack cheese block pairs so nicely with the juicy flame-broiled beef and the soft bun and fresh fixin's. I order mine with fried jalapenos to make it "extra," like my kids tell me. "Dad, you're so extra." YOLO, amiright? I dunno, I saw that on Facebook or something. This place is awesome! We were visiting Covington and we stopped by and ordered the oyster basket and the soft shell crab basket. Both were delicious!
