Just a follow up. We went back for the chicken pot pie. I am always a little suspect about a chicken pot "pie" with a lid. But this one was thick and creamy, and loaded with lots of vegetables and succulent chicken. The lid was made from a wonderful thin crust that perfectly complemented the filling. We also had the beet salad with wonderful red and golden beets, a generous serving of arugula and greens, served on a plate coated with a creamy goat and herb cheese that made it so easy to blend all of it together. Yum! This all went perfectly with a pint of Fremont Summer Ale and all was served with friendliness and attentiveness in this neighborhood hangout. We are hooked. read more

Great location in between Fremont and Wallingford. This place was wonderful in the summer because it opens up its windows to Stone Way. They had a delicious old fashioned and a great HH, along with a wonderful charcuterie plate. Unfortunately the service fell short on the day that I dined here and I have not yet since been back. We had a waitress that at first let us sit anywhere, but as soon as more people started to arrive we got slowly pushed to the corner with all of our food and drinks that we ordered jammed to the edge of the bar table. We were then looking at a folded window area because she just had to make space for two people, one who wasnt even there until 20-30 minutes later. We of course moved to be nice, but in turn we were just crammed over even though we were there first and had ordered drinks and food. Overall, it was an unpleasant experience and it is doubtful I will be back. read more

I must have made the unfortunate mistake of asking them to turn some music on during the commercials of a 'pre-season' football game, because the waitress was extremely rude, and so unfitting to the way I asked it- which was, by all standards, very nice. I was there with my boyfriend, and we were both completely thrown off and immediately regretted spending our sat evening patronizing the place. We were so distraught by her attitude, that we put down what we thought was our due amount (I did the math) but it turned out we were short less than $1, so here comes the waitress, running down the street, yelling dramatically after us, as if we had ditched out on the entire bill! I am not happy to say that I suck at math, which I clearly do, but I still couldn't believe how dramatically she acted as she approached us - asking "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!" My boyfriend handed her several bills - more than enough to cover what we owed, plus a tip. More than I thought she deserved, actually. But she still acted as though we had physically assaulted her. Many of my friends that go to places like that, agreed that she was way out of line. They would also have asked for music during commercial breaks - it's not a crime, especially when you're being nice about it and you're not in a Sports Bar. Nor do they think that, when it came to underpaying by $1 (though it was an unfortunate mistake on my part) that it seemed fitting to chase us down the street as if we were actual criminals. Anyway, fast forward a few days, I ran into her at a neighborhood bar, and decided to apologize. I told her I was sorry that things got so out of hand the other night. I never intended for that to happen. I apologize. Instead of saying, simply, thank you for that, she added how rude I was and how much it had haunted her (she hadn't slept for days... Really?!). I told her how I was trying to apologize, and instead of hearing me and moving on, she was causing more trouble and being even ruder. Then she tapped her boyfriend on the shoulder - the owner (Joe Russell), to come to her rescue, and he was an absolute maniac! He wouldn't let me walk away from the conversation, though I never said a bad word or even raised my voice, as he verbally assaulted me. He actually blocked my way as I tried to leave, literally, not letting me through (!!!!) to my table and then came up *several* times later to verbally assault me again in front of my horrified friends. I will never set foot in this place again, nor will I recommend it to any of the friends I have in the neighborhood which I have lived for nearly 4 years. I am a business owner myself and have worked in food service for many years - I would never consider treating a customer or a person the way that he treated me. I found it unconscionable. read more

This place has absolutely terrible service and the customers here are snobby and mean. I came here after my pet died across the street at the 24hr vet clinic with my boyfriend and was honestly broken up. I was told by another customer to "stop it" and the bartender seemed to back him up by saying "you two have been emotional for 30 minutes now". It was devastating to be put thorough that loss and have such inconsiderate people be at this bar across the street. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone who has a heart. If zero stars was an option I'd put it. Russell's was was a great place to hang out on 4th of July until the "owner" joe verbally assaulted me and my group of friends when we asked for the check. Then the "owner" ran into the street to call us C***'s and ridicule what we were wearing. I've never been treated with such disrespect at a dining establishment. The "owner" apparently didn't want his time watching the fireworks display in the street to be disturbed but that was no excuse to yell the ugly things he did at my group of friends. read more

The sign says "good things" for a reason. This place really lives up to the adage: if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well. The menu is short but there's not a bad thing on it. There are a few select beers on tap and you can always trust that they've chosen well. Even my chronically disastisfied father was happy with his wine. The highlight though, and why I keep coming back despite having moved to the other side of the city, is the cocktails. This man is an artist. I could describe all the wonderful cocktails I've had here (on and off the menu) but I would run out of space. What I will say is that I have never had a Sazerac to equal Mr. Russell's before or since. There's more to this little bar than the fare though. It's really a beautiful little space. Cosy in the winter and with an open front in the summer. It's a comfortable neighborhood atmosphere (although so many people have discovered it that it can be packed on weekends). Both the owners are extremely pleasant people and have added a personal feel to the space. I wish every neighborhood had a place like this but sadly it's one of a kind. These two have turned good taste into a business model to spectacular effect. read more

Very mixed crowd in the best Wallingford way -- old/young, hip/not, etc. Joe Russell is the consumate host with friendly help from Adam and others. The rye old fashioned is dangerously good. This place is about 4 blocks from my house, so I love the location. Pros: The cocktails are great, especially the Paper Airplane and the Lucille Ball. Ashley is an awesome server and she makes the pies herself - they're different every time, but always fantastic. Sometimes I go just for dessert. The food is yummy, albeit a little expensive. The lighting and general ambiance are lovely without making me feel like I should be dressed up. Cons: It's small and a little loud, and sometimes I have to walk somewhere else if there's no room to sit, but the staff are friendly and move chairs around when possible to make room for me. read more

came here to try the place out on a Friday evening around 630, and boy am I glad we did. the place was fairly full upon arrival, and only got more packed as time went on. it was easy to see why - our waitress was extremely friendly, and though we didn't have interaction with the bartender, he seemed to vibe pretty well with the customers seated at the bar. the food was really delicious - we started with the pretzel and added Beecher's beer cheese, as well as the charcuterie board. for drinks, a sazarac and old fashioned. not only were the mustards (two types!) for the pretzel was probably the most potent (in a good way) I've ever had, it was greatly complimented by the soothing, creamy texture of the beer cheese. and the charcuterie? a glory to behold, both in my mouth and on the plate. for our second round, we went for the meatballs, a Rag Top (cocktail), and asked for a bourbon recommendation from the waitress. at some places. I feel as though the recommendation is a little generic. definitely not the case here - she took the time to ask what we were looking for, and what she recommended was absolutely on point. the meatballs, as my partner described - "I'm not going to say these are the best meatballs I've ever had, but they're REALLY [expletive] good". (note, he said this as he stuffed his face with them). overall, definitely a place I'd return to. the drinks were great, food delicious, and service amazing - also, they have happy hour 7 days a week. something I'm sure to take advantage of in the future. read more

I was on the fence about moving to Wallingford, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that Russell's was a drawing factor for the area. An exemplary neighborhood bar with a great range of drinks, decent food, comfortable ambiance, and attentive, personalized service. I kind of wish it were like 50% bigger since it's sometimes hard to find a spot, but the small size also contributes to the coziness of the place. Stopped in b/c of the reviews of their excellent cocktails. We had the roasted beets and pork sliders; I had their rye old fashioned and I don't remember what he drank. Food was ok-- not bad, but not great. I chose the old fashioned b/c it's a classic and a good "first drink" when I'm at a new cocktail bar-- but this one was completely watered down by the huge amount of ice, so it was definitely disappointing. So this has been my go-to spot now for over a year and half. It's still fabulous. Draft wines are a great idea - you never get a glass from a bottle that has been open for too long. The food is relatively simple but well-done. I go here with friends, my parents, my hubby or just by myself. The owners Joe and Ashley are friendly and make you feel welcome. Yes, it gets crowded but those two try their best to find you a spot to have a drink and/ or bite. And Ashley makes those amazing pies. It's such a needed place in Wallingford. Except for Russell's, there seems nowhere to go and relax with a glass of wine lately in the hood! read more

Great little neighborhood bar in Fremont. The whiskey menu is impressive and affordable. There are two TVs, so stopping by to sip on whiskey or gin, while watching a game, after work, is highly recommended. Just a 1 block stumble home; this little bar is pleasant with sexy dim lighting, it's clean, and perfect for a first date, or group of friends conversing. Tasty appetizers, my favorite is the chicken pot pie, although it's a tad bit small @ $14, $10 is more up my alley (yes I'm cheap). Safe neighborhood, inviting atmosphere, and pleasant music; not too loud so that you can hear your conversation. Small menu but everything is made from scratch. We had the pretzel. It comes with two mustards (stone ground and spicy honey) and also a beecher's cheese dip. Excellent. We also tried the spicy pulled pork sliders. They were really good and not what I expected. The flavor kind of tasted like chili! Though they had some interesting cocktails, both my husband and I opted for beers. They had some local brews and a few from farther away. Next time we'll try the pot pie and meatballs! read more
