I was looking for a brunch spot with outdoor covered seating so I could bring my dog. This place was great! The fried chicken plate was definitely a 5/5 ($21). Appears to be a walk-in situation, but I could be wrong as I did not organize the meet up When we arrived, we could see it's not a huge place but it's cozy kind of rustic and definitely seems to be like a neighborhood hang out. We did have a little bit of wait, but again we walked in and there were six of us. We also arrived mid morning and it was busy. Always a good sign. We got our table and warmly greeted by the wait staff. Then we had to decide on what we were going to eat. There are multiple good choices. I selected the pork verde with eggs. It was delicious very faithful nice balance. The only thing I would have liked personally was a little more heat however, that is a personal preference and did not detract from the flavor. This review was for a recent pop up dinner - although I am super curious to go back to try regular service. We dropped by on their Japanese themed popup night and tried a few small plates: beets tops to the bottom, cold smoked tomato, burnt leeks and onion with seaweed pesto, pork kutsune skewer, garlic jalapeño popper skewer, and mochi waffle with blueberry. We especially enjoyed the burnt leek - never had anything like it before- the leeks were roasted/grilled on the outside but sweet and succulent inside, the seaweed pesto added a great deal of salty umami and nutty flavor. Don't underestimate the food here because it is absolutely delicious! Stopped in for a late meal and really enjoyed the rustic interior and open window floor plan. Our server was super friendly and attentive. The drinks were fantastic as well. We ended up going with the fried chicken appetizer, which was 10/10, crispy, tender and came with a great house made two-part mixed sauce. We split the pork and the salmon open face sandwiches which were also excellent. Tons of unique ingredients mixed perfectly together. Filling without leaving us feeling heavy. This was one of the most unexpectedly amazing dinners I've ever had! My husband and I were in the area for work and they had just opened for dinner so got an early dinner. The restaurant looked gorgeous and when we sat down we looked over the menu. Everything was tempting so we had (3 total) cocktails, appetizer, dinner, and dessert for just $128! Ambiance: A corner bar in the residential Fremont area, where neighbors walk down the hill, and others combat traffic and street parking issues to visit. The outside looks cozy and inviting; from the mini patio outside to the busy bar-centered interior, seating is limited, and the patrons fill each spot. Dark and loud, the inside gives the feeling of a lounge, where everyone comes to forget their woes. What I ordered: The Morning BLT ($18) caught my eye at first glance of the Breakfast menu. Including poached eggs, bacon, tomato jam, greens, house mayo/mustard, sweety drops, served on a biscuit with a side of potatoes. Parking is really great here. You don't have to pay which is really nice. However, we're not from here so parking up a hill was a little scary. There is a lineup outside of the door as soon as they open even on a weekday! You can make reservation reservations, but we didn't. We also walked in right as they opened. The biscuits are great. It is a small up charge, but I recommend getting the up charge! The greens were really good very different but they were slightly cold. I didn't like the service when we walked in because we had a coffee that was from a coffee shop and they told us we couldn't bring it in, but they gave us a cup to change it into a glassware anyway. When we left, we asked for to go cut to put our coffee we brought in in. It's a coke cup so we could take it to go, but they told us that they didn't have any TOKO cups which I didn't really appreciate because we could've just put the coffee back in the car as we finish the breakfast. The portions are pretty large so you could share them.The area is super cute inside however breakfast did not allow me off my feet. I had an NA cocktail which was supposed to have rhubarb, lemon and I think sage ...... it was red, that's about all that distinguished it from lemon water. The chicken and waffles didn't come with syrup, which was almost not a problem, cause there was some really satisfying citrusy tartness and sweetness coming from the gravy (I think) .... but there wasn't half as much as the dish needed to counterbalance all the starch on the plate. There was hot sauce, which was fine .... but even all the hot sauce they gave me wasn't enough. I felt very compelled the entire time to ask for some syrup. They might've been annoyed by that, and (almost) rightfully so, because that dish is VERY close to being a very good savory version of that dish. Came here with a friend after work on a Thursday. All the tables along the sides of the restaurant were taken but there were plenty of spots by the bar. The restaurant is tucked away in a residential area so very local feels and you can park for free on the street. Drinks are very affordable and delicious. The bartender wasn't super chatty with us but came by whenever he saw our glasses were empty. Would recommend their cocktails or anything on their wine list was decent. The food was also plentiful and larger menu than I expected. Very well priced and we got a few dishes to try. The onion dip and burrata were fresh and delicious! Highly recommend those! We stayed for at least 2 hours catching up and we noticed quite a good turnover and crowd. The bar has people with families, people on dates and even older folks come in and sit. Problems in the kitchen. I'd give this place 2 stars for food but good service and good bar-tending takes it to 3 stars. Also the ambiance is nice. We've eaten here multiple times hoping the food would get better but now give up any hope it ever will. It's apparent now that the cook isn't tasting his own food. It was all severely over-salted. At most places the solution would be to under-salt and let the customer salt/pepper to their own tastes. Impossible here. They give it to you in tiny bowls with tiny spoons. This restaurant has no clue about culinary. Seasoning needs to be distributed evenly which works with salt/pepper shakers not with salt bowls and spoons. I get they're trying to play some not-fancy-enough angle with shakers but ask for salt/pepper at U-Village Eureka and you're presented with small beautiful shakers that probably cost all of $3 on Amazon. Shakers distribute well unlike spoons. Places like Union Saloon which try to be pretentious while serving bad food won't work in the long run. Going there for their service and drinks makes sense. I think covid has taken its toll on Union Saloon. Not quite up to snuff compared to what I remember. Their creative bartender moved to a new location some time ago, and the cocktails haven't been quite the same since. Portions seem to have shrunk (a $16 asparagus salad was literally 8ish spears of asparagus with some cream topping). Tonight I left hungry and a little disappointed. At least the meat snack is still incredible. I'll keep going trusting they get back on track. read more
