I stopped by this restaurant before a show. There were a few people inside but with plenty of seats available. My show was nearby so I decided to stop by this place for a quick bite. I ordered the birch juice, pelmini, borscht and Uzbek samsa. The birch juice was refreshing and slightly sweet. It was the perfect size of borscht. The borscht was light and filling at the same time. I make my own borscht at home at was deliciously comparable. I like that they garnished it with dill. I love dill. The Uzbek samsa was fluffy and crispy on the outside and juicy and flavorful on the inside. I could really taste the seasonings. I think they may use cumin in it. I could eat a few of these! The pelmini must be homemade, because the dough itself was thin but chewy. I love pelmini, and these are my favorite so far. I also loved the dill garnish as well. The pelmeni are amazing but the service is subpar. I would be lenient because there are only 2 people working, but the way it went on a Wednesday night was: we came in, told to sit anywhere, then the main bartender/waiter proceeded to converse with everyone else in the place before even dropping off water 30 min later. At that point, he said "I should probably get you some menus", which didn't matter because by that point, I had already looked online and decided. The food came pretty fast after ordering, but when it came to getting the check, it was once again a waiting game. I'd also like to note that they're VERY dog-friendly. Like a patron had a dog sitting at the bar at the same level as everyone else. Do with that what you will. The 2 Pros: It's a cozy space for an intimate date night or small friend gathering. The pelmeni were so juicy and savory (but could've used more sour cream to pair). But at the end of it all, I don't know if I'd recommend. Maybe just buy their frozen dumplings and make em yourself at home. read more

The food has potential, and that's why I gave it a second visit--hoping my first experience was just an off day. I was here for a quick dinner and out of sheer curiosity, since Eastern European cuisine is pretty much absent from the dining scene here (with very few exceptions). Keep in mind that it is much more a bar than a restaurant but offers a limited menu of Eastern European staples: savory dumplings with meat (pelmeni) and non-meat options (vareniki), some traditional pickled appetizers and savory pastries (piroshki). Now, don't expect an extensive menu - there are no soups, desserts and such. I got the impression that the drinks list was heavily outweighing the food one... The food though was quite good taste-wise and had that authentic, home-cooked quality to it. This place is quirky and a tiny bit kitsch to my taste, and the music was a wild concoction of anything from Emir Kusturica to a variety of Balkan and slavic bands and themes but I guess geographically it was "close enough" :D (?). But at least they did not turn it into a stereotypical nesting-dolls-samovars-folk-songs nightmare. I could see how this place is quite alright if you want something with a different vibe to what most bars here offer or are in the mood for some seriously delicious dumplings. read more

A small tavern that serves the best beet vodka and Eastern European specialties. We took a booth along the wall and service was warm and casual. Highly recommend: pelmini meat dumplings, pickle plate, chicken piroshki and borscht! The pickle plate was a delightful assortment of fermented beets, cucumbers, carrots and cabbage complimented perfectly with light feta and dark rye slices. Everything was so flavorful but the carrots were our favorite. Their borscht was cold which was perfect for the hot day! The chicken piroshki was fluffy and the chicken filling was mashed and soft. My favorite? It's a competition between the borscht which was so refreshingly tangy yet sweet and rich, and the dumplings + sour cream (it was so light and melt in the mouth) + dill which was such a unique and hearty combination. This place is cozy with unique food and drinks. I came across this place randomly and added it to my to do list knowing that it would make for a perfect night out someday. I knew I had to try the beet and horseradish vodka, but was happy to find they had vegan food options as well. This is perfect for a stop off when walking up and down the Wallingford area, but also makes for a fine stand alone destination. My Lenin drop was delicious. I enjoyed sampling the horseradish vodka. I tried 3 of the pickled veggies. I feel like I do need more pickled beets in my life. I really enjoyed the carrot salad as well. I plan to try the pickled cucumbers on my next visit. wow, seriously good vegan dumplings! I'm of Polish descent, and grew up eating my mom's and grandmother's (non-vegan) pierogi. Since going vegan a number of years ago, it's one food I haven't been able to find in the Seattle dining scene in veganized form. Now, these are technically not pierogi, but vareniki. Which are basically mini pierogi in my eyes. And they're just so good. Literally like mom used to make, but vegan. And vegan sour cream to boot! My regret was that we had a show to go to afterwards, and couldn't take a bag of a dozen frozen ones to eat the next day at breakfast (pro tip-- dumplings cold straight out of the fridge are yummy). Vibe is old school dive bar. Great service. the bartender was our waitress, and my better half said she made the perfect martini. I'm a beer guy, and can see the refills were attentively given. The pickled plate is good, too. Definitely worth doing your first time. Our preference was the pickles, and next time we're going to try the pickled mushrooms, which are the only things not included as part of the plate. Rye bread is like my mom used to buy from the local Polish bakery, too... this place is 100% authentic I tell you. The food comes out in these adorable wooden hand painted bowls. They would not let us in at 3pm on Friday to eat lunch with our sleeping, 3 month old baby (like she is trying to sneak a drink?). I found Korochka Tavern online in looking for a place to host my birthday gathering a few weeks ago and knew instantly that this is where I wanted it to be. Dark and intimate with a soft touch, the small space is warm and inviting. Add to that delightfully named and attractive cocktails and a small menu of Eastern European plates... What's not to like? Miriam was easy to communicate with in making arrangements and reserving the front tables for us, and she was a hospitable host the evening of even though she was busy as the only one on duty for our group and walk-ins. The drinks were excellent. The pickle plate was a lovely assortment. The dumplings were mediocre. Maybe the meat ones are better than the vegan ones? They really needed the sauce and sour cream to get any flavor out of it, but I was hungry enough to eat my allotment without complaint. I heard the piroshki was tasty and that the borscht was superb. My wife and I came in after a show at Good Shepherd Center, after reading all the good reviews. We ordered dumplings and cocktails at the bar. I was hungry as heck and thirsty too, so we ordered Pelmeni and Vareniki dumplings. We also had TransSiberianExpress and BBB cocktails. Everything was so good. The dumplings filled me up like classic comfort food should. The drinks were like magic potions and everything was served with panache. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate with the small horseshoe bar and booths along the wall. Plenty of people to watch and listen to. We've got some lovely memories and we'll be back soon. read more

I had the Vareniki yesterday. The adjika sauce was delicious. However, the dumplings themselves were obviously microwaved. They were piping hot. The first time I visited, they were much busier, so I can assume that they made them properly. Their pelmeni was really good on the first visit. I was disappointed, but that said, the service was excellent and the decor inviting. My Polish grandmother rolled in her grave ever so slightly when I got the microwaved food, though. read more
