Not a pleasant experience by any means! Wanted to try a local bar and was begged for money by the band repeatedly! One of the Gentlemen literally came over to me and told me if I didn't have cash on me, there was an ATM across the street and stood there for a response. Completely rude and inappropriate. Had a fantastic Saturday night here. We came in early with my toddler and the staff was very nice and already live music was playing. Amazing, chill atmosphere. You could spend the whole day looking at those guitars. The fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese were very good, and I also had the half rack of ribs which were HUGE. The service is a lil slow however friendly and they seemed to be out of a lot of the liquor and beer selection.. that's my only complaint about the night. Rum Boogie is a Beale Street staple. Stevie Ray Vaughan would eat here whenever he played near Memphis, his order: two beers and a bowl of gator gumbo. You can't say no to that. The Red Beans and rice are my favorite. BBQ pork nachos is popular and for good reason. And of course, gator gumbo. Music is almost always playing on stage. Acoustic performances for most of the afternoon until the bands come on in the evening. Cover charge doesn't start until the main act starts. It's a bar with a bar atmosphere. It has a lot of tables and big picture windows to look out onto Beale Street. I don't know how extensive their beer offerings are I'm always to caught up in the music and the food. We were informed the restaurant imposed a $4/person "entertainment fee" after 7 pm. The band didn't start playing until 8:10. Even then, there was no lead singer. My wife and I went in after a Grizzlies game and ordered two double Tito's and sodas. It took at least 10 minutes for the bartender to even make her way over to us, there were six other people sitting at the bar. Walking up and down Beale Street, I was half convinced that I was going to cut my trip short because I could not go to the museums and hear the live blues music I wanted. Sure. Right. Then I walked into the Rum Boogie Cafe. OMG. Seriously, the combination of the Red Beans and Rice and the quality of the music got my eyes tearing up. It was THAT good. Thank you for the opportunity to make this trip. Mission accomplished. There were three things in this joint that I am going to detail as to why it was so good. I'm going back tomorrow as the same band will be performing again. First off, the food. I only had a cup of Red Beans and Rice and another of Gumbo. I am now spoiled on these dishes as I was King Crab in Alaska. The gumbo is competition award winning and has a flavor unlike anything I have ever eaten.The beans were just as good. Don't worry. I will still eat your great gumbo. I'm not going to be as persnickety about it as I have been about crab. I will hold my tongue and not fuss. I like your gumbo. Keep making it. I guess I will just reclassify what I ate tonight as something "that is a dish like gumbo, but different", or Memphis gumbo. Just like there are so many variations of what is considered BBQ. Music here was my heroin. I could feel it coursing in my body. These guys were awesome. Just like in Nashville, the artists who play the honky-tonks are extremely talented (Like Micki Milom) these guys are the real deal.They have played all over the US and should have been in Greece except for the pandemic.Vocal/harmonica was the lead backed up by a fabulous keyboard man, a drummer who had tight chops and the singer's brother on six string bass walking his fingers up and down the frets like crazy. This band got to hang out with the Rolling Stones on one occasion. Last comes the museum in the joint. I THINK I heard that all the box framed guitars were of people who actually played there. I have to check it out. If true, there will be a lot of photos of guitars. I was told that the only guitar framed whose owner did NOT play was Elvis. There are scores of guitars by the "Who's Who" of rock and blues. There were also hundreds of other guitars by lesser known artists who donate their axes. read more

We got seated in the back room; which is where the bands play. We had only planned to have dinner there and then bounce around Beale to check out the live music, but luckily, the band playing that night was awesome and we ended up staying for hours and hours, having drinks and enjoying the music. After hopping around Beale Street for a while we finally found ourselves settled at Rum Boogie Café. The live band (I wish I knew their name because they did a great job!) and the atmosphere of the place made it an enjoyable way to close out the night. Not only was the band enjoyable, but the décor gives the inquisitive eye (me, hehe) something to look at - I must have spent a good 30mins looking at all the guitars hung from the ceiling; though I never did get a straight answer as to if they are authentic... Anyway, the drinks prices are average and there is a cover charge (lame...). But it's a fun spot for all ages (there were a few old ladies cutting a rug to the band). read more
