Smash burger was delicious.. always cold beer ... always a favorite and a great time .. atmosphere is awesome
Oldest tavern in Memphis, in a cool part of old town. The Dill Pickle Bomb appetizers were delicious! Good Sweet Tea, but the bar choices were a bit depleted. My Catfish Plate was good, including Fries & Potato Salad. The Grilled Chicken was also good. Worth a visit!
This little joint down on South Main is the kind of place you go when you don't feel like cooking, don't feel like dressing up, and don't feel like spending all night listening to a waiter recite the specials like Shakespeare trying out for Broadway. The waitresses don't waste time--food's in front of you before you've finished telling the story about your brother-in-law's truck that still won't start. The kitchen turns out plates that look fine enough to impress your mother, but let's be honest: this is South Main Street in Memphis, not Paris. You come for a good snack, a cold beer or a quick cocktail, and the sort of comfort that comes from knowing supper won't get in the way of the evening. If you walked in here expecting white linen and violins, then bless your heart--you probably aren't smart enough to be out without a chaperone. Best of all, it's a fine walk from the hustle, expense, and bad food of Beale Street--proof that sometimes the better life is just a few blocks away
The ambience was nice. Pretty much an over 50 crowd. The server was super nice and helpful. The burger was was delicious. I would definitely return to the Green Beetle.
Visiting from Los Angeles I asked a friend of a nice local place to eat with my kid -- she recommended this place and she ain't miss !!! This little place was so cute , it made me feel like I was in a episode of cheers lol My daughter found a table ( she's 2) it was raining so we walked from our hotel about 7 mins total -- it was a Saturday so they had football specials ! Got her a bucket of chicken tender that's were seasoned to the GODS ! It came with 6 she ate 3 ! I had the bettle burger with pepper jack cheese and bacon EXTRA pickles .. 10/10 . They had a number of games on with the captions cuz I can't hear lol Spent about 45 dollars and well worth it!
My coworker and I had a nice dinner here when we were in Memphis for work. I got the BBQ plate and it was amazing especially for a bar and not a BBQ specific restaurant. It was super filling too. I had a few cocktails that I enjoyed a lot too. Service was really friendly and changed one of the channels for us when we wanted to watch a basketball game. Cool place to check out!
Great portion size (not too much), tasty catfish, delicious fries, and I got it with comeback sauce, which went better with the fries and catfish than the Cajun tartar sauce even did! The slaw was a bit soupy for me, but they were unfortunately out of the other sides I was considering. Service was very kind! Southern hospitality at its finest.
The Green Beetle is awesome! Had the Beetle Burger with bacon jam -- absolutely delicious. Brit, the bartender, was super friendly and introduced me to a great new beer. Love this place -- perfect mix of great food, cold drinks, and Memphis charm! Thank you Mike and Brit!

I really enjoy red meat, but I do not eat a whole lot of it. I had read that Memphis was the chicken wing capital, and thought to try a recommendation in the area. Well, it was just fried chicken wings, I was looking for hot wings, so I passed. On my walkabout, I passed by the Green Beetle. I wasn't really feeling a burger, but it is Memphis oldest tavern and a local went out of his way to mention it to me, so I stopped in. I had been walking and it was warm, and the lovely waitress brought me a cool glass of water as soon as I sat down. They have a cute little patio, but I sat inside to get some cool air. I did appreciate that it was cooler, but also that they kept the big doors open so I could see outside. Still had a view. I think South Main is charming and would love to spend some more time in the area. The Green Beatle has a good menu, simple but some interesting options. I really didn't want a burger but was tempted with one that had goat cheese and a jalapeno strawberry bourbon jam. And then I saw a sign for the special of the day, a French Dip. Again, not my typical order, but it is one of my sisters very favorites, and I thought I would get one in her honor, I guess. The french dip is not on their menu, but I asked the waitress how it was, she smiled and said it was one of her favorites. Decision made. The picture doesn't do it justice, I was inside with the light coming at me, so you can't really see the deliciousness. The meat was so tender, the bread was both soft and crunchy. Had a bit of a char on the bread, which I enjoy. The au jus was beefy and salty and the cheese held it all together. I ate the hell out of that sandwich. I thought the fries could have used a little salt, but no matter, I just dipped them in au jus. All in all, I had a lovely time. And I needed a meat nap.

Great spot downtown with great portion sizes. Incredible diversity in their menu especially with burgers. The service was very kind and helpful, and relatively quick considering they had one waitress at lunchtime. Plenty of decorations which add tremendously to the atmosphere of being a small local place.

Great lunch stop. Nice menu of burgers and sandwiches. We loved the white beans as a side. The hot pastrami and Big Willy sandwiches were good We were there for a late lunch on a Monday so it was fairly quiet. We were greeted promptly and had friendly service. Worked out well en route to National Civil Rights Museum. read more

We love visiting "the oldest" tavern/bar in cities we visit. This place was really cool! Our server was extremely friendly as was everyone as we first walked in. The Tavern has maintained its "old timey" aesthetic. We ordered just drinks but the food we saw people ordering looked really good, especially the Beetle Burger. I got their Dark and Stormy while my husband got their Somo Paloma. Just a heads-up: there's a 15% tax on each drink you order which is charged separately. read more

This classic tavern has long been a stop for me for a cold drink. However, this visit was the first time I had food and I wasn't disappointed. The bacon jam was an instant draw for me. It was applied well to the juicy burger. The fries were freshly cut and perfectly seasoned. The service was ok and accommodating while there were many big games on their multitude of TVs. Overall, there is a cozy vibe with a local feel. I'd recommend. read more

I am rating 3 for the food because we really had a delicious meal. However, we were over taxed as reflected on the bill . The waitress tried to explain it but it really did not make sense. We went to 4 other dining establishments during our stay in downtown Memphis and no other restaurant had a separate liquor tax on the bill. Did not haggle or raise a fuss but will not frequent this location again as we do not feel this practice is fair to the consumer read more
Another great find on a business trip...I was beating myself up on my first trip to Memphis because I didn't get to check out this spot. Needless to say I was not going to let it happen a second time. While Memphis is know for its BBQ, make way for the catfish too!! Located in the downtown area, this will indeed be a go-to spot for me while in town. COVID PROTOCOLS: As you come in you are asked to sign-in on a sheet of paper that has columns for your name, email address, and telephone number. The table also has a very large bottle of hand sanitizer for use. The bartender was the only person serving shortly after lunch and was very attentive. He recommended the catfish and I agreed. I opted for the fries and side salad as the sides. The salad was small, but mighty. So good I forgot to take a picture; sorry. The catfish came out piping hot and fresh. Two huge pieces might I add. The homemade Cajun tartar sauce is just what you need to dip all of that goodness up. It's the best $13 I've spent in a long time. Be sure to check out some of the local beer on tap as well. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Cajun chicken tots - to die for. Sly's South Main Burger - to live for. These tots and this burger are some of the best that I have ever had. The tots were crispy yet not dried out, the chicken was tender with that Cajun spice, the white queso was rich with the perfect viscosity. The burger was juicy, hearty, and manly. Tender meat, crunchy bacon, and the best surprise was the sweetness and softness of the sourdough bun. That was one of the best sourdough buns I've ever eaten. It really added a lot of dynamics to that burger - some phrasing and a lot of vibrato in musical terms. And of course a fried egg - all the best burgers have one. Excellent food and service. A great post Memphis Rox climb meal. If you call the 901 home and haven't been here before, do yourself a favor and go there ASAP. read more
Took my family here today after a day at the movies. Vee was our server and she gave fantastic service. The restaurant gives a sports bar vibe inside but was clean just really loud. The salads we got were really big and very good. The kids chicken fingers were delicious and we really recommend trying this restaurant. read more
I went to tried The Green Beetle on Monday October 3rd, 2022. I had this place on my list of restaurants that I wanted to tried in the Memphis area, and it did not disappoint. When my friend and I got there around 2:30 the place was pretty much empty which was good for the both of us. Immediately our waitress greeted us at the door and quickly took our orders. It didn't take long for our orders to come out. I decided to try the Bandito Burger that have Gouda cheese, bacon, lettuce, onion, onion rings, and BBQ sauce. Somehow all the flavors just mash perfectly together; nothing felt out of place. The fries I have was pretty good, but maybe needed a little bit more seasoning. Overall a place I definitely recommends trying out. read more

I always have great service while visiting. I started coming here as a child on Fridays with my siblings. Fridays there is a catfish special you can't go wrong with. Today we stopped in before show at the Orpheum. It was fairly crowded but we were able to get a table in the corner. We were quickly greeted and had drink orders taken. We a ordered ordered catfish special with comes with two filets, house cut fries, slaw, tarter sauce, hot sauce and ketchup. The special is from 11a-4pm. It's a pretty filling meal for the price. read more
Visiting Memphis area from Las Vegas we decided to take a stroll downtown and find a unique place for a quick lunch. Found this bar/restaurant which is apparently the oldest bar in Memphis. Cute decor with a simple menu featuring a daily special. We had a couple of spicy bloody Mary's that were very good but basic. We shared two items, a classic hamburger with fries and a Philly cheesesteak also with fries. Burger was awesome. Fries could have been cooked a little longer to make them crispy. Cheesesteak was good but not a wow factor. Service however is A+. Worth checking out ... once. read more
We ordered takeout and this burger was great!! The burger was very large and filling. The bun is super soft and had great flavor. The burger patty was juicy and flavorful and the pimento cheese was a perfect touch. The lettuce was not super fresh, but is understandable with recent supply chain issues and the ice storm. The fries were good, but would likely have been better if ate immediately. They were a bit soggy due to the steam in getting them home. The burger was very large, but they kind of skimped on the fries. Overall a delicious, yet very unhealthy meal that I would highly recommend! :) Other things that might be helpful to know: 1. They add 15% gratuity on takeout orders. 2. Staff is super friendly. 3. Staff doesn't wear mask. read more

I do truly enjoy going to green beetle. The atmosphere is nice and the people and staff are always great. I usually don't get food here. I am sad to say I was disappointed with the burgers. The toppings and options are great and do taste delicious. The burgers are thin and medium comes out very well done. They are likely frozen patties but I do not know if that's true. The buns on the burgers do get that great buttery grill and crunch while staying soft and sweet. But OMG the tots. They were ordered crispy and did not disappoint. If you are a tot lover these are a must! read more

Right there on Main & feed the electronic meter (put a receipt on your dashboard) -but I look for FREE PARKING on the side streets off Main St.
