My client took us here and he didn't really say what type of food they served, but it ended up being pretty good. Later during the meal, he admits that Momma's is one of his spots, so that's saying a lot. It sort of looked like another bar/restaurant from the outside, but they have a nice outdoor patio overlooking an old decrepit building which is at least some scenery. Once inside, you'll quickly see it's highly decorated and has a claim to be one of the only trucker themed bars in the US. Inside is decked out to the ceilings with signs, neon, old mirrors, collectibles, and many other items. I swear it looks like it's been in business for 30+ years, but my client said only a couple of years. I looked over the basic menu and saw burgers, breakfast, salads, sandwiches, a famous pork chop, wings and a few other items. The client and my colleague quickly ordered devilled eggs, cheese curds, and chili cheese fries. The first two apps were really good, I didn't try the fries though. They had a burger of the day, and a food special of the day, but I settled on the wings. With those I chose the 10 pc, Buffalo with dry rub, smoked. Kind of a weird combination since most people usually order dry here apparently, but I like saucy wings. When they come out, they are huge and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish them. I think I could only eat 6-7. My colleague had a ribeye steak salad which was a protein bomb he loved, and my 2 clients ordered a big rig grilled cheese which he also loved and a fried chicken sandwich (firebird) which looked really good. I went two separate times and had two different experinces. One experience with an invited group and second experince was togo order. With the invited experience the food was hot and fresh because we are featured guest. However, even with food togo there is a reasonable hottness that stays with fresh cooked food. I ordered a Cobb salad with fried chicken and a burger with wedge fries at a lil after 5:00p and text to pick up was 5:21p. I was there to pick up at 5:28p. I walked in and stood in the entrance, near make shift board hostess stand, not sure but to my left was a hostess counting money, a guy at a kiosk eating with an apron on and the busy bartender. The hostess saw me, smiled and finished talking with guy at kiosk, they talk briefly until he sees me then walks over. I grab the order and feel no warmth. I figure the buger on top of salad maybe but nope, sure enough I get home and it's old and the fried chicken on the cobb salad is frozen. It was dried out and reheated. The amount of blue cheese was insane the lettuce was not fresh. The cheese on the burger was two different colors, the toppings looked old as well. $45 for a salad and burger, trying to support our local spots and the inconsistency is appalling. The burger was so good and fresh at the invited event only for me to remember it, and want to go back months later. The I pay my hard earned money, use my expensive gas to drive from East Memphis to Downtown and get a frozen breaded chicken patty on a salad and an old burger. Had a wonderful lunch today at Momma's. It was so delicious. I ordered the smash burger and fries special they were advertising for downtown dining week. My friends ordered the chicken Parmesan sandwich that came with a huge piece of chicken. Both sandwiches were served on brioche buns. My hamburger came with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, pickles and onions. I opted for no mustard and ketchup. My burger was hot and I loved the crunchy meat sides. My friends enjoyed their chicken parmigiana sandwiches. The fries were hot and coated with yummy crunchiness. The fried mushrooms were fried perfectly and came with a horseradish based sauce. So very good!! Our server Janice was so kind and friendly. She was just lovely!! We met the marketing guru Eric. He was so cool and kind as well. Everyone was so personable and family oriented. The bar hosts different events each day. They have a large patio outside. It was sprinkling so we ate inside. It is dark Inside but comfy. The kitchen is located on Kentucky Street in downtown Memphis. We felt safe but some may feel it is not in the best of neighborhoods. Sometimes you just gotta trust your gut and take an adventure. So this place is really nice! I came here during a Yelp Elite event and I'm so happy that I did. I don't typically explore the downtown area so I'm always happy to find gems especially outside of work events. FOOD: The deviled eggs were really good. I will give you a heads up that the dill is very present so if you aren't a fan of dill, they may not be for you. I, on the other hand LOVE deviled eggs and can appreciate a good dill pickle so the flavor is on point for me. They also provided a sample of a burger that is called "Popping Pomento". I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it because I have never had pomento cheese. It just never seemed appealing for me. It was creamy and melted in your mouth. I would definitely recommend giving it a try. I also hd their chili which was really good. It is on the sweeter side but it comes with some fresh jalapeno. I added some hotsauce and a little salt to bring some savoriness to it (I just like sweet and savor combos). The kidney beans were an awesome choice to make the chili with so I will definitely have to come and give it another try. AMBIANCE: This place makes me think of Huey's when it comes to the overall ambiance but a bit more intimate. They have a stage for their Kareoke night (yes I said it, they have have a kareoke night). I also noticed from older photos that they have bands that come play too. I loved the bathroom scene! They have a gender neutral bathroom as well as the gender specific which is appreciated. I absolutely loved the decor of the ladies restroom. The portraits are completed puzzles and plenty of things that would entertain a lady in the loo lol. DRINKS: SO.... I had to give the drinks a try for myself and I absolutely loved the Irish coffee and Momma's Hot chocolate. They have a Lot Lizard, that gives a nice bite coming from the smirnoff and the champagne, but it was missing something for me. I wasn't getting much of the fruit or lemonade... it just kind of gave a pleasant spiked drink with not much flavor. Now, the liqour isn't so strong that you are squinting after every sip... I just needed it to pick a side, either be a hard drink or a fun one that sneaks up on you. Overall, my experience here was great. How should I begin? This was my first time at Momma's where our Yelpies Awards was hosted. The decor, atmosphere, vibe was an absolute experience. The staff was fun, professional and very down to the earth. The food and drinks are definitely to die for. I was in awe because it was extremely an electric atmosphere. I like this place. I really do. In a former life, I'd either be a regular or staff. It's a dive bar. A dive bar of dive bars, but it's a glossy, well-curated version of a dive bar dive bar. It's kitschy as all get out...welcome to the world of big rigs, tow trucks, and backroads travel. Part museum of the open road, part homage to the interior set designer of Roadhouse, bar and kitchen all in one, it's impressive. Ample patio space outside the fairly narrow confines of what's built atop the slab. And in a seedy (but oddly, it doesn't feel as dangerous as South Main or the Core/Beale- I guess because you don't expect bad there, but here amongst warehouses on Crump, there's a weird vibe of 'hey, this feels safeish!'). You kind of have to know it's there to find it. Had a late lunch; sat at the bar and the barkeep was very courteous. I get that navigating the food portion of the menu isn't always a drink pourer's purview, but I asked her to help with a rec between the Firebird and the (whatever the Philly is called). I had the Philly with a cup of chili. The chili was hearty, pretty good with a touch of cumin that was noticeable (?). The Philly was a Philly. The onions did a great job of playing their part, but nothing above-par-noteworthy about said sandwich. All told, I should have gone with the Firebird. This is a solid 3 star joint by my math. Nothing bad, nothing great. The thing that stands out is the decor; I imagine it's a helluva bar that also happens to have good food. Aldo's stuff, especially Bardog, elsewhere is more refined in the area of exceptionally executed bar food. And it's closer to work. I've been to Momma's for lunch before and really enjoyed it, so next on the list was trying their brunch! While it's not listed on the menu, they do offer mimosa bottles with a small orange juice for around $25, which is a great option if you don't want to go the by the glass route. My boyfriend and I split the Bacon-Egg-N-Cheeseburger and Momma's French Toast. Overall, everything was good, though nothing totally blew us away...except for the fries. Just drooling thinking about it. I do wish they used a thicker cut of bread for the French toast, I think that would've taken it up a notch. That said, I loved that it came with bacon and eggs on the side. The burger was a bit better. I'd definitely order it again, though I think it could've used some kind of sauce to tie it all together. I ended up asking for a side of maple syrup to dip it in, which actually worked out well. Now, the fries, those were perfect. Crispy, golden, seasoned just right. I'd honestly go back just for them. When you think of a dive bar, you envision this place. It's tucked away in an industrial area, filled with locals. Plenty of choices of ice cold beer. Judging by the assortment of trucks in the parking lot, this seems like the lunch of choice for area blue collar workers. Food is excellent! The Bubba Burger is a standard patty - lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and a slater of homemade mayo. Perfectly cooked medium, it's juicy and flavorful - and sloppy! Potato salad side was equally delicious; tasted homemade with the right ratio of potato, mayo and seasoning. We picked up a to-go order and checked out the small bar area by the front door. Also saw a nice looking outdoor patio area, but didn't get to check it out. Momma's is an unassuming hole-in-the-wall dive bar/restaurant but what's inside is oh-so-good. The weekend brunch menu is streamlined but everything on it sounded delicious. But as a self-proclaimed burger snob, I had to go with the "Bubba" burger, which came topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and "Momma's Mayo." The beef itself was griddled to perfection with lightly crispy edges just as I prefer. The patty was hefty and the soft, fluffy bun held all of the toppings together fairly well. I loved the tang of the mayo, and added another mild tang to each bite. I wasn't sure what to expect of the home fries, but man-oh-man they were amazing. They were super crispy with the skin left on. I also really liked that they came in a variety of different cuts. I easily could have finished another order. The decor inside was exactly what you would expect from a dive bar -- even in the bathrooms. The service was excellent from our waitress to the cook who brought us our food. The ambiance has a mix of chill and wild (patio) with karaoke. The space inside is cozy. From reading other reviews we are glad we made it inside! The bartender is amazing and her smile vibrates the room. She was very helpful in making our din din decisions. First time there so we asked a couple questions and she was spot on. Impressive she knew on the spot that their tater salad is mayo based. Most places always tell me to hold on a bit to ask. We started off with the chicken noodle soup and it DID NOT disappoint! My cousin and I loved it! Bartender recommend the Firebird Sammich, trying something new and omg it was delish!
