I learned about Ruggles Black 3 years ago when I worked in the Greenway Plaza area and have been a fan ever since. My favorite dish there is the baked goat cheese salad it is the best salad I have ever had. My sister that lives in Houston has been RAVING about this restaurant for months. She's a regular and couldn't wait to take me here. Located in the Upper Kirby area right off of 59 is a small but beautifully decorated restaurant with an extensive but expertly crafted menu of Indian inspired dishes and also catering to Paleo & Keto diets. The decor in the restaurant is warm and beautiful with a full bar and extensive spirit selection. My sister is strict keto and me being a "carb watcher" I decided to try the keto items as well. The Keto Chicken wings were delicious and full of flavor, I wanted to drink the sauce. The Keto bread was intimidating at first, it looks like a slice of cheesecake, but after trying it I realized it's dense cheesy perfection. Now on to the KETO CARBONARA!!! It's was delicious! I added shrimp to my order and it really was a treat. I eat Zero carb noodles often and the chef has learned how to cook these to perfection for this dish. It was creamy, flavorful, and all around a really delicious meal. The portions are huge, I ate half of my pasta and had enough to take home for a meal the next day. Came here for Houston Restaurant week and ordered the beef short rib taco, tandoori chicken, and a strawberry velvet cake. I also ordered the problem #7 (scallops) as well. Now this place is amazing if you have diet restrictions, but if you're not on any restrictions the place is not worth it. Don't get me wrong, the food was not bad, but it's very pricey here and if HRW wasn't going on and I didn't have a bunch of friends on keto I would never come on my own. My main complaint food wise would have to be the scallops. They had the right flavors, but way too salty. The presentation was really cool with the box it came in. I will admit that I personally thought there strawberry velvet cake was amazing. It's a huge slice, beautiful presentation, but my ice cream on the side was basically ice cream soup when it arrived and I really love ice cream. It was actually really hard to order dessert because the waiter likes to come with this huge dessert tray and personally explain to you what is on the tray. It's a cool concept however the restaurant is so loud it's hard to understand anyone talking to you if you're not right next to them. I kept having to say "WHAT DESSERT IS THAT AGAIN?" a couple of times. I would have liked if they offered us a dessert menu too to help. My biggest complaint with this restaurant is it's so tight. The flow of traffic is terrible, we sat at the very back of the restaurant and it was impossible getting there without bumping into a waiter or two. The restroom is all the way on the other side of the restaurant and it was hassle going through such a tight space. The restroom only has 2 toilets, one of them for males and one for female. They give you a very tiny waiting room where both males and females wait. I was waiting in there with another person, and the space was tight that I actually got hit by the door from a person trying to come in to use the restroom as well. By the time it was finally my turn to use the restroom and I was done there was already 5 other people in line to use the restroom! Of course there's only so much room in that little tiny waiting area that some had to wait outside. Overall I would not come again unless I was on a keto or paleo diet. read more

This is the cutest restaurant and great if you are trying to stick to a specific diet! They have tons of Vegan,Keto, and Paleo options. From the food to the drinks and all of it tastes amazing. When I went I had the Beyond burger and it was amazing! It had so much flavor, it came with a side of sweet potato fries which I'm not a big fan of. However, they're not too sweet here. The drinks are also great, I can't remember what I had but I know it was good because I plan to go back soon. My favorite part was that ambiance, I felt like I was on a beach in Florida. The only weird thing was the bathroom it's really hard to get to, so for all my plus size men and women, and or handicap or disabled food lovers beware. Hopefully they get that fixed soon. We shared a salad and a pizza. The crunchy kale salad was overly sweet and had large pieces of granola bar. The pizza, a pepperoni, was ok but a little bit undercooked. We also had dessert. The atmosphere gives an East coast midtown vibe and provides the intimate atmosphere that is perfect for impressing that special someone. Not a great experience. Food is okay for it having a lot of Paleo options. However, I was really upset with the service. I had ordered a cocktail and asked for it to be made "a double". It is universally understood that a "double" means double liquor. I enjoyed that drink, but noticed it still wasn't as strong as I would've liked it to be. Our mains come to the table and I ask the server for another drink. He replies, "Would you like another double?" and I nod "yes". When the bill came, we saw the total-- we were both astonished. That for my partner and I, our 1 appetizer and our 2 main courses, our total had come to $120. My 2 "doubles" cost nearly $60 in total. I pulled the waiter to the side and brought this to his attention that he had charged me for 4 drinks. He replied matter of factly, "You asked for a double". I responded frustrated, "Yes, double the liquor, not double the drink?" He walked away like it wasn't his problem. I didn't press the issue any more than that, but It was my first experience there, and I will absolutely NOT be returning. Do not recommend unless you want to be ripped off. I'm sorry, that simple syrup watered down Gin and Tonic was not worth $30, and Ruggles Black should feel ashamed trying to charge a guest $60 for 2 cocktails. read more

I live extremely close to this location, so I usually take a little stroll over for some Paleo cuisine. I love their presentation and the great service. The meal choices are always very plentiful and enough to share. Although I frequent solo, I have both eating all my food as well as taken leftovers to enjoy the next day. Getting a single seat at the bar on a Fri/Sat night is a challenge, so I opt out of going on those days...get there early or choose the patio seating - it's awesome I have NOT had a bad dish yet -- this restaurant is definitely 4.5 stars in my book! read more

I ordered their Bread Pudding togo and it was fantastic as usual. I am a bread pudding lover in general and their's is one of the best bread puddings I have ever had. The Bread Pudding at Ruggles Black is warm, soft, gooey, has a big piece of chocolate on it and also has a side of strawberry sauce. My parents don't like bread pudding much but love the one here. The BP is very delicious and very soft in texture with a smidge of crisp on parts of it too. The chocolate adds a lot of flavor and the side of strawberry sauce is very fresh made and adds a great fruity flavor and contrast to the rest. The strawberry sauce is tasty enough to sip on its own. The Bread Pudding from Ruggles Black, Red Lion Pub, Ruth's Chris, Killen's Bbq and Steakhouse are my favorite places for this dessert. The BP here is also unique and not as doughy as some of the other ones I named. The service was great and friendly on this visit as well. read more

Pros - unique interior design of restaurant - they take reservations - offer indoor and outdoor seating - waiter was friendly and seemed very knowledgeable about the menu items - dessert selections are awesomeeeee (love the tres leches, not so much the key lime pie) Cons - parking was confusing (the lot said for taco cabana parking only...they need to change that sign) - SO crowded, loud and hectic - we had a table for 5 and I felt quite squished on the booth - menu items are kinda confusing to understand...I like knowing what things are in my meal. - they were a bit slow on refilling our waters.. - prices are quite high (1 entree was at least $15-20) - ordered the tandoori chicken and the chicken was pretty dry - ordered the chicken wings appetizer and the wings seemed quite burnt I probably won't come here again. I bookmarked this spot a while back, but always chose a different restaurant. This past Thursday we decided to check the place out. Okay, so it's on the corner of I-59 and Kirby Dr. In the Twin Peaks parking lot. It's a small restaurant, but there is indoor and outdoor seating available. The door entrance is kind of tight with people coming in and people leaving at the same time. But nothing to discourage anyone from coming. Okay so we arrived around 7pm and there wasn't a wait on a table so we were lucky. The server was very nice. Not as knowledgeable on the drink menu as I like, but very knowledgeable of the actual menu. For dinner we decided to order a couple of the appetizers. They were kind of pricey for appetizers. But it was cool I guess. The oysters and caviar was my absolute favorite. The angry shrimp were alright. Nothing really special. And the Lamb flatbread was really good as well. Lamb meat is powerful, so if you don't care for it I do recommend one of the other flat breads. All in all this place was a cute spot to hang with your friends or go on a casual date. But it is one of those see and be seen spots, which is kinda my thing..... so. Check them out! read more

Love the food here! Everything is fresh. This restaurant caters to many diet, Paleo, Vegan, dairy free, Keto, Atkins and more. I would describe the food as Asian/ Indian influenced. The flavors are robust, the colors are vibrant and the smell of the dishes takes you on a mini vacay. The Angry Shrimp are a must app. Best resemble curry shrimp. The Tacos are always a hit with me. The tortillas are made with almond four. Same with the enchiladas. Cocktails are made with premium liquor and are delicious. Always a great spot for date night. Made it to this place. And I'm glad i finally did. It was pretty good. They had the side door open so it was a little chilly inside. We shared a pizza as an appetizer. The "fresh" was tasty, cheesy and the vegetables were fresh. However it was very greasy. For our entrees, my sister got the crab pasta. It had a spicy flavor to it but she loved it. I ordered the seafood ramen. It was very well seasoned and the seafood was fresh. It was also a little spicy but nothing i can't handle. I wasn't a fan of the fried poached egg. The breading got soggy and made it a weird texture. I would also have enjoyed more than 1 muscle. Other than that. It's a pretty good place. The portions were enough for 2 people really. While our meal and service was fine; the valet backed a car into our table knocking my 5 year old daughter half a foot forward during our meal giving all of us a fright. While she's okay, she was scared as was my family. i was horribly disappointed when no part of our meal was taken care of. When we asked if it could be comped given the fact that the valet quite literally hit our table while dining on their patio, the manager asked us "do we have a problem here" and then took on a defensive position saying "the valet company is not associated with us. They pay us to be here to park cars. That would be me paying for someone else's mistake" I have never felt so undervalued as a patron. The valet is serving the restaurant that we are dining in and my daughters seat got hit by a car they were parking while dining at their establishment. The manager said over and over again "sorry, but it's just not my fault". Ruggles Black is a great restaurant with plenty of business and they won't suffer from losing us a as patrons or one bad review, but i cannot believe that the restaurant would act this way to our family of 4 rather than make this right. I don't give 5 stars that often but Ruggles Black really delivers it! It is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in town. It is the first paleo and keto friendly restaurant that offers tons of paleo and keto dishes. Although I'm not on such diets, I still enjoy their paleo choices a lot. To me, these dishes taste as good as normal dishes if not better. Plus they add an interesting and healthy twist! My favorite dishes are pork and shrimp spring rolls made with their paleo angry shrimp lol, roasted beets and pork belly salad, paleo crab pasta and so on... as I'm still trying different things on the menu. These dishes are very flavorful with refreshing tastes and a perfect balance between savory, sweet and tart. I can really taste the Asian and French elements in the dishes and am always amazed by the perfect tastebud miracle they create!! If you go there for dinner, they have a huge dessert tray with tons of paleo and non-paleo desserts. I tried paleo avocado chocolate mousse the other day and got very impressed. The chocolate flavor is natural, strong, bittersweet and lingering. The avocado makes the mousse extra smooth but the taste doesn't show up until the end of a bite. Loved it! Also, the chef will come out and greet you! So feel free to let him know any feedback you have! The restaurant is pretty small but had both indoor and outdoor seating.
